Chapter 3: Player Attribute Entries. Coach, Please Be Normal.
Zuo Chi woke up and sneezed. His head felt heavy and groggy; he might have caught a cold from walking back from the subway station in thin clothes last night.
He added an extra jacket, went downstairs to buy a box of cold medicine, and picked up a bowl of stir-fried noodles for lunch. When he got home and checked his phone, he found an unread text message signed by VEX team manager Li Jing.
The message was roughly saying they hoped he could come to the VEX team base to start coaching as soon as possible.
The VEX base was in Nancheng. From here, it was about a two-hour subway ride.
At four in the afternoon, Zuo Chi finished packing his luggage, neatly placed the notes and materials he had organized over the past few months into his backpack, and left the rented room.
On the way, he didn’t forget to message VEX’s Manager Li.
[Zuo Chi: Are the players all at the base?]
When Manager Li received this message, he was looking with a massive headache at several starting players in the base dormitory who were enthusiastically discussing where to go on vacation now that the team was eliminated.
“I think Hai Province is pretty good. The weather is nice there now, and we can vacation by the sea.”
“Have you no taste? In winter, you have to go to Bin Province! I’ve wanted to go to the Ice and Snow World for ages, plus the BBQ there is delicious…”
“Anywhere is fine. I’ll book the tickets, I’ll book the tickets—hey, is Land coming with us? Land?”
Li Jing’s temples throbbed. “Land has already gone downstairs to the training room for ranked matches—who told you that once the team is eliminated, you can go on vacation and don’t need to train? I’ve already contacted our new coach; he’ll be here this afternoon.”
Several players exchanged glances.
“Oh, Manager, the next match is months away anyway. What’s the rush?”
“Exactly. Playing matches is exhausting. Continuing to train now won’t yield any results. It’s better to take a break and relax; maybe our form will be better when we come back.”
“I’ve already booked the tickets! They cost several thousand yuan, Manager…”
Manager Li was momentarily speechless. All the players wanted a vacation; how could he stop them alone? Even if he forced them to stay, they wouldn’t have their hearts in training.
“…Then at least have a meal with the new coach today before you go on vacation?”
The players laughingly agreed and quickly went back to chatting about their vacation plans.
[Li Jing: The players… are currently at the base. Coach Zuo, why don’t you come directly to this restaurant? I’ve booked a private room, and the players will have a meal with you.]
Zuo Chi stopped in front of a hotpot restaurant and, after confirming the name, pushed the door open.
This place was both a restaurant and had KTV private rooms. Walking through the corridor, he heard several rooms emitting ghostly wails of singing.
In late autumn, the sky darkened early. Outside, the curtain of night had fallen, and the lights in the corridor were extremely dim, casting a hazy glow over the dark walls and carpet.
Turning a corner in the corridor, several young men wearing VEX jerseys and a middle-aged man in a suit walked toward him. Zuo Chi matched their faces with their names and tentatively asked: “Manager Li?”
Li Jing froze for a moment. Although the young man before him calling him “Manager Li” was wearing a mask, making it hard to see his face clearly, his posture was upright, his brows were gentle, and his voice was steady. The aura around him was quite different from the people in the esports circle he usually encountered, whether they were players or coaches.
He didn’t look like someone who spent all night hunched over a keyboard playing games; he looked more like a university lecturer who had just stepped off a podium.
“You are… Zuo Chi, Coach Zuo?”
Zuo Chi nodded.
“Perfect timing! I’ve already booked the room; it’s right ahead! Coach Zuo, why don’t you come with us?”
“Sure, sorry for the trouble, Manager Li.”
While Manager Li enthusiastically greeted him, he introduced the players to him one by one. After finishing the introductions, he suddenly remembered something: “Why didn’t Land come?”
“When we left, Land hadn’t finished a ranked match. He said he’d come over after he finished.”
VEX’s Marksman muttered softly after speaking.
“Land is really something. Having his main account in the top ten of the national server isn’t enough; he even opened a smurf to keep grinding… When I checked today, his smurf was already almost in the top 500. That’s just too much ‘sweating’.”
Entering the private room, Manager Li was busy ordering while several players quickly took out their phones and huddled together to whisper.
VEX Team WeChat Group.
[The new coach is so young. If the manager hadn’t said he was the coach, I would’ve thought he was a trainee here for a tryout.]
[The new coach won’t stop us from going on vacation, will he?]
[Probably not. He looks refined and keeps smiling; he seems quite easygoing.]
[Let’s take turns toasting him later and get the new coach drunk. Otherwise, according to custom, he’ll definitely make us review yesterday’s match on his first day, and then how are we supposed to get to the airport tomorrow?]
[Good idea. If we each toast him a glass, he’ll be so drunk he won’t even recognize the heroes.]
[Hahahaha.]
Zuo Chi sat on the sofa near the door. Perhaps because the room was filled with a faint scent of alcohol mixed with perfume, the head that had cleared up slightly after taking cold medicine in the afternoon began to throb and feel heavy again.
Not only were his temples pulsing with pain, but his ears also seemed to buzz, as if an electric current were wildly crackling.
“Coach Zuo? Coach Zuo?”
Zuo Chi’s eyes regained some focus as he looked up at Manager Li.
“I’ve ordered a few dishes. Coach, is there anything you don’t eat?”
“I don’t eat onions or cilantro.”
“Got it, I’ll tell the waiter—you brats, stop playing on your phones. Chat with the new coach, and ask Land if he’s finished his match and to hurry over.”
The VEX players responded.
The buzzing in Zuo Chi’s ears grew louder. In the dimly lit room, some fuzzy small points of light seemed to slowly connect, forming strange characters.
[Esports player detected within 1m!]
[Genius Esports Coach System is activating—Activation successful!]
[Newbie Mission: Discover and coach an esports player with a Golden Attribute Entry. Mission Reward: Coaching Expression +10, Coaching Authority +10, Coaching Professionalism +10.]
Zuo Chi suddenly reached up to cover his ears. It wasn’t that he was startled by this “Genius Esports Coach System,” but the voice was just too loud—it made his eardrums ache.
However, the players around him seemed to have heard nothing, only looking strangely at his action of covering his ears.
“Coach… are you feeling unwell?”
Zuo Chi instinctively denied it: “I’m fine.”
After about ten seconds, the discomfort slowly vanished.
As a transmigrator, he had a good level of acceptance for non-natural things like “systems.” After a brief adjustment, he tried to summon the system in his mind.
There was no complex function panel, just a single line of text.
[Does the Host wish to enable the Attribute Entry function? (Yes/No)]
[Host selected “Yes.” Attribute Entry function enabled.]
Zuo Chi’s gaze froze for a moment. The fuzzy characters he had seen earlier suddenly became clear, slowly converging above each player’s head, forming speech bubbles similar to those in chat apps.
The bubbles were of different colors, and they contained text.
These should be the player attribute entries the system mentioned.
[Position: Solo Lane. Grey Entry: Feeding Frenzy (There is no way of feeding he hasn’t thought of, only ways he hasn’t done yet).]
[Position: Mid. White Entry: Invisible/No-Blame (Mediocre. Doesn’t carry, doesn’t feed. After watching the whole game, you won’t even remember he was there).]
[Position: …]
Zuo Chi: “…”
Honestly, these entries were quite accurate. They basically highlighted the most prominent traits of each VEX player during a match.
The system’s prompt echoed in his ear again.
[Please note: Attribute Entry levels are ranked as Black, Grey, White, Blue, Purple, and Gold.]
[Attribute Entries are not static; they change as players grow or decline. Please provide targeted training based on these entries to help players improve.]
On the other side, the players hadn’t noticed their new coach’s abnormality. Seeing the waiters starting to bring out the food and several bottles of beer being served, they picked up glass cups and began to pour.
They poured a round.
“Eh? Where’s our manager?”
In the corridor outside the room, Li Jing was holding his phone, pacing in circles anxiously: “Why isn’t Land picking up… how can one ranked match take this long!”
The phone, which had been ringing for almost a minute, finally connected.
“Manager.”
“Land, where are you? I’ve sent the location to your phone. When will you be here?”
“Fifteen minutes.”
The sound of city traffic could be heard on the other end; he seemed to be on his way.
Manager Li exhaled: “Fine, I’ll wait fifteen minutes. You must be on time!”
Hanging up, Manager Li returned to the room. Several players were toasting the new coach, and the atmosphere seemed quite lively.
“Welcome to VEX, Coach Zuo. I’ll drink this one; you do as you like!”
“I’ll toast the coach too!”
The new coach, though looking refined, didn’t hesitate when it came to drinking. He downed two glasses of beer in a few gulps, and his fair face didn’t show even a hint of an alcoholic flush.
Manager Li: “Don’t just drink! Eat! The beef rolls here are fresh-cut and delicious.”
After a round of drinks, the players exchanged knowing looks, and one of them tentatively spoke up.
“Coach, do we… have any plans for the next few days?”
The new coach sat in his seat, looking down as he ate a beef roll dipped in sesame sauce, saying nothing.
“Uh, I mean, we just finished the Autumn season. Although the results weren’t great, maybe we could take a little break?”
“Coach Zuo? Coach Zuo? We’ve booked tickets for tomorrow to go to Bin Province. Do you want to come with us, or stay at the base and train with Land—HOLY SH*T!!!”
The new coach’s head dropped, slamming onto the table with a loud thud.
