Chapter 63: Miserable Su Zhuo â “You Two are a Match Made in Heaven” part 1
Lu Xunye had just finished speaking when a mouthful of cold wind forced its way in. “…”
He waved his hand, prepared to head back inside, but Gu Jiang grabbed his arm. He turned back.
Facing the light from the room, Gu Jiang asked, “Is there someone you like?”
“…” Lu Xunyeâs lip twitched. He leaned his head back, wearing a bizarre expression. “Are you confessing to me?”
Gu Jiang rolled his eyes. Just as he opened his mouth, Lu Xunye pushed his hand away, cutting him off. “I refuse.”
“…” Gu Jiang was speechless. “Are you sick?”
Lu Xunye thought about it, swallowed the words at the tip of his tongue, and said, “Fine, just say what you need to say.”
“I think that kid likes you quite a bit. What about you?” Gu Jiang asked. “What do you think?”
“What do you mean ‘what do I think’? I think with my eyes.” Lu Xunye was completely baffled. “Youâre being weird. Weren’t you scared of him during the day? Are you a professional matchmaker now?”
“…” Gu Jiang lifted his right arm, which was held in a support sling. “Believe it or not, I’ll slap you to death.”
Lu Xunye caught his hand, put it back in place, and patted it. “Just focus on recovering. Don’t end up with a comminuted fracture.” He added, “Those are hard to treat.”
Gu Jiang steadied himself, suppressing the urge to punch him. He let out a long sigh. “Actually, Iâm just feeling a bit sentimental.” His expression gradually turned serious. “Do you know that kid is investigating the Shen familyâs car accident?”
“He never told me.” Lu Xunye looked at him suspiciously. “How do you know about the Shen family? He shouldn’t have told you his identity.”
Gu Jiang paused, then snorted. “Do you think I’m by his side every second? It wasn’t hard to deduce from the conversation between those two masters and servants earlier.”
Thinking about it, Lu Xunye realized that was true. Considering Gu Jiang had saved him, he decided to listen to what he had to say. He walked to the wooden gazebo in the terrace garden and sat on the large swing. “Fine. If you insist on talking here, can you make it quick?”
Ignoring his irritation, Gu Jiang turned his back and leaned his left hand on the glass railing, looking down at the fountain below as the wind blew through his hair. “I think you should try to persuade that kid not to take things that happened in the past too seriously. Itâs been so many years and nothing has been found.”
“If it really was a setup, the person behind it surely destroyed the evidence. Don’t let it end in a situation where everyone loses.”
“People have to look forward. Learning to let go of oneself is the key, right?”
Lu Xunye let out a sudden laugh. “Those were his parents. They died under mysterious circumstances; itâs only natural for him to want to find out the truth.” He countered, “If your parents had an accident and there was more to the story, could you do exactly what youâre saying? Could you ‘let go and look forward’?”
Gu Jiang lowered his eyes, his thoughts unreadable. After a long time, he murmured, “Fair point.”
“Hmm?” Lu Xunye didn’t hear him clearly. He tentatively probed, “You seem very concerned about Shen Yunqianâs affairs. Are you really not his brother? He seems so certain. Did you have plastic surgery?”
Gu Jiangâs fingers on the railing moved slightly. He seemed amused. “If I were his brother, would I not acknowledge him?” He touched his face and turned toward Lu Xunye. “Do you think we look alike?”
Hearing him say that…
“Well…” Lu Xunye rubbed his chin, stood up from the swing, and walked around him to observe closely. After a while, he shook his head. “No. Youâre currently… tsk, your face is a bit swollen. Iâll take another look when the injuries on your face have healed.”
“…” Gu Jiang curled his lip. “Then you won’t get the chance. Iâm leaving tomorrow.”
Lu Xunye: “Why?”
Gu Jiang didn’t answer directly. “Go back inside. Iâm done talking.”
Lu Xunye walked back toward the house, then turned back again. “I want to ask you something, though it might be a bit impolite.” He pointed to his own throat. “Did you suffer an injury here?”
Gu Jiang was stunned for a moment, then let out a helpless laugh. “You really are quite impolite.”
His voice was coarse and raspy, but not unpleasant.
Guo Yi had just gone to check on the vegetable patch. Upon returning, she saw two dark figures on the balcony. After observing for a moment, she grew worried and came up. The moment she saw Gu Jiang, her soul nearly fled her body.
“Mr. Gu, Xiao Shen told you to rest properly in the guest room. Why did you come out? Don’t stand here; the wind is so strong. Go back quickly.”
“Xiao Shen said you like seeking thrills, Mr. Gu, but you can’t jump from here! This is the third floor. Besides, your injuries from getting caught in a tree while skydiving haven’t healed yet. Go back and rest.”
Shen Yunqian had been afraid Guo Yi would worry, so he lied and told her Gu Jiang felt the urge to jump whenever he saw high places. He claimed the fractures were from a skydiving accident. He had told Guo Yi to keep an eye on Gu Jiang and not let him wander.
Gu Jiang gave Lu Xunye a helpless shrug. In a voice only the two could hear, he said, “Heâs afraid Iâll run away in the middle of the night.”
No wonder Lu Xunye had seen two or three people standing by the villa gates and two more at the main hall entrance. He had actually been thinking that the villaâs security was impressive.
Lu Xunye: “…”
Once Gu Jiang disappeared from the terrace, Guo Yi patted her chest, still reeling from the fright. “Young people nowadays really don’t cherish themselves at all.”
Lu Xunye was deep in thought and absentmindedly agreed, “Exactly, exactly.”
“Oh!” Guo Yi cried out. “Why are your eyes so red?”
Lu Xunye snapped back to reality. “Ah… I, this, uh.” He rubbed his eyes and spoke vaguely. “Maybe Iâm just coming down with something.”
Guo Yi urged him, “Then Mr. Lu should head back to his room quickly. Iâll get you some medicine and eye wash.”
…
In the study.
Shen Yunqian was sitting behind the desk, wearing gold-rimmed square-round anti-blue light glasses. He was staring at a computer screen with scrolling documents, saying something. His pale hand gripped the mouse, scrolling continuously, occasionally tapping on the keyboard.
He had earphones in, and his other laptop displayed a video call in progress. The screen showed shifting lights against a wall; no person was visible.
Shen Yunqian typed the last character, saved the modified proposal, and sent it to an email before switching back to the online meeting. The screen was filled with various profile pictures, and the voices of employees discussing the proposal heatedly came through the earphones.
Several people were arguing at once, giving him a headache. Combined with the discomfort from wearing the earphones for too long, he took them off, letting the sound play through the laptop speakers.
Just as he was about to say a few words to end the meeting, an impatient voice came from the other computer.
“Alright, thatâs enough. I finally get a day off and I still have to accompany you for a meeting. Look at how many hours itâs been. Iâm about to be squeezed dry by you. I never saw you this passionate about work before.”
The moment these words were spoken, the computer with the ongoing meeting lagged for two seconds. The same words drifted out, mixed with the ongoing discussion.
The employees who had been discussing the proposal went silent instantly. Shen Yunqian looked at the other laptop beside him and raised an eyebrow. “President Su… is this your way of expressing dissatisfaction with me?”
Then, he saw the profile picture belonging to Su Zhuo, which had been muted, hastily go offline.
Shen Yunqian let out a soft laugh and turned back to the screen. “Iâve already sent the final version of the proposal to Assistant Liu. Have him explain the upcoming team project to you all. Meeting adjourned.”
Su Zhuo remained silent.
Shen Yunqian pulled the laptop with the video call in front of him and teased, “President Su, who has been squeezed dry by workâdo you need me to file for worker’s compensation for you?”
“Shen Yunqian, you bastard!” Su Zhuo yelled. “My reputation has been ruined by you! How am I supposed to go to the office tomorrow!”
Shen Yunqian offered some reluctant comfort. “Why don’t you get plastic surgery? Iâll hire you again under a new name.”
Su Zhuo: “…”
