Chapter 35: Wait for Me, Baby
Passing through the moon gate and walking along the pebble-paved path, the pond water by the side was crystal clear. Several koi played leisurely in the water, creating ripples.
The scenery was pleasant, with birds singing and flowers fragrantâidentical to the courtyard in his memory.
However, the tranquility and harmony before him could not quell the irritability in Gu Yunshengâs heart.
“Xiao Sheng, the courtyard is still the way you like it, isn’t it? For all these years, Iâve had people maintain it, hoping that one day youâd return…” Mother Qin held Gu Yunshengâs hand, her eyes reddening. “If your father were still here…”
“Don’t mention him to me!” Gu Yunsheng suddenly shook off his mother’s hand, his tone as cold as ice. “When he abandoned his wife and son, did he think about today?”
Mother Qin froze for a moment, then sighed. “Xiao Sheng, do you still blame your father? Back then…”
“Enough!” Gu Yunsheng interrupted her impatiently. “Iâm not a child anymore. I don’t need you to make up stories to lie to me!” He gave a cold glance around. “Even though this courtyard hasn’t changed, there has long since been no place for me in this home.”
Having said that, he ignored Mother Qinâs stunned expression and walked straight toward his room, leaving behind a lonely silhouette.
Seeing this, Lu Jingheng quickly followed. “I say, kid, is it really necessary? You finally came backâdo you have to go against your mom?”
Gu Yunsheng stopped. He didn’t turn back, but only left a cold sentence: “It’s none of your business.”
“How is it none of my business? Your mom entrusted you to me; shouldn’t I take good care of you?” Lu Jingheng leaned toward Gu Yunsheng with a grin. “Tell me, why are you unhappy? Did Auntie pressure you to get married again?”
Gu Yunsheng gave him a sharp glare. “With which ear did you hear my mom pressuring me?”
“Do I even need to hear it? Do I not know your momâs mind?” Lu Jingheng smiled and winked. “But then again, youâre not young anymore. You should find a wife or an Omega and live a good life. Stop having a sour face all day; people who don’t know you would think you owe someone a lot of money!”
“None of your business!” Gu Yunsheng opened his door and walked in. Just as he was about to close it, Lu Jingheng blocked the door handle.
“This kid, his temper is still so foul! Stop sulking. Come on, Iâll take you out to clear your head!”
In the bar, deafening music and multi-colored lights intertwined. The air was filled with the smell of alcohol and hormones.
Gu Yunsheng frowned. He instinctively wanted to activate the optical stealth mode to disappear from this noisy environment, only to vaguely remember that he was no longer that “ghost” who could come and go as he pleased.
“What, not used to it?” Lu Jingheng handed him a cocktail of a bizarre color. “Try it? This is the specialty here, called ‘Lost Marsh’.”
Gu Yunsheng took the glass and stared at the bottomless green liquid, blurting out: “Are you sure this color wasn’t scooped out of a swamp?”
Lu Jingheng froze for a moment, then laughed heartily. “How did you know? Thatâs exactly how the name came about…”
One glass of “Lost Marsh” went down. It was bitter with a hint of sweetness, much like Gu Yunshengâs current mood.
“Relax, brother.” Lu Jingheng patted his shoulder. “You just came back; itâs normal to not be used to it. Come, another glass!”
Gu Yunsheng didn’t refuse. He tilted his head back and drained the glass. The numbness of the alcohol made him temporarily forget those unpleasant memories, and his thoughts gradually drifted away.
“Yo, isn’t this Young Master Gu? Long time no see!” An oily voice sounded in his ear.
Gu Yunsheng frowned slightly and turned to look at the newcomer.
It was a tall man in designer clothes, but they couldn’t hide the sleaziness in his eyes.
“Who are you?” Gu Yunsheng asked coldly, his tone carrying unabashed disgust.
The man froze for a moment, then an awkward smile appeared on his face. “Young Master Gu is a busy man who forgets things; itâs normal that you don’t remember me. But itâs fine as long as I remember you.”
As he spoke, he reached out to put his arm around Gu Yunshengâs shoulder, only to be ruthlessly slapped away.
“Keep your hands to yourself!” Gu Yunsheng coldly knocked the man’s hand away, his gaze as sharp as a blade. “Iâm not interested in men.”
The man’s expression changed, turning into embarrassment and anger. Just as he was about to lash out, he saw a beam of light shoot out from the ring on Gu Yunshengâs finger. As if a bucket of ice water had been poured over him, his face instantly turned pale.
He stammered and took a few steps back, his eyes flickering with panic and fear as he apologized repeatedly. “Sorry… sorry, Young Master Gu. I… I didn’t know…”
“I didn’t know you were here. I… Iâm leaving now!”
The man finished incoherently and fled.
“Whatâs wrong with him?” Lu Jingheng was completely confused. He didn’t understand what had happened. He could only see the man who was arrogant just a moment ago now running away like a rat seeing a cat.
“Maybe he remembered he owes me money.” Gu Yunsheng swirled his glass nonchalantly, but a trace of an imperceptible gloom flashed in his eyes.
Lu Jingheng wanted to ask more, but the bar lights suddenly dimmed. A spotlight hit the center of the stage. A woman in a red dress walked slowly onto the stage. She held a microphone and parted her red lips: “Welcome everyone to ‘Nightshade’. Tonight, letâs party to our hearts’ content…”
The familiar scene and ambiguous lighting made Gu Yunshengâs thoughts drift again, as if returning to that dangerous and tempting “dream”…
On stage, the womanâs singing was gentle and moving, like a nightingale singing softly under the moonlight. Gu Yunsheng felt the singing grow more and more distant, and the images before him began to distort as if covered by a layer of blur.
Lu Jinghengâs voice came intermittently, as if telling a joke, but he could no longer hear clearly.
He only felt dizzy and his body was heating up, as if he were in a steaming heatwave.
“Damn it, this drink…” He cursed in a low voice, wanting to stand up and leave this place that was making him more and more uncomfortable.
However, before he could stand firmly, a cold palm firmly gripped his wrist. A strong scent of perfume mixed with a faint tobacco smell entered his nose, making his already chaotic head even more dizzy.
“Where do you think youâre running to?” A low and familiar voice sounded in his ear, carrying a hint of dangerous chill.
Gu Yunsheng looked up sharply. What entered his sight was a handsome face with a touch of wickedness.
“Qin… Qin Feng?” He spoke in disbelief, his voice trembling from surprise.
How could it be him?
Qin Feng? Why was he here? Gu Yunsheng was in a daze for a moment.
Since the last time they parted at a bar, this man had vanished into thin air for almost half a year.
During these six months, let alone a message, there wasn’t even a single like on his social media.
Yet he appeared again in such an invasive manner.
He couldn’t help but frown slightly, a surge of inexplicable irritability rising in his heart.
Before he could figure it out, Qin Feng had already pulled him up from his seat without a word.
“What are you doing?” Lu Jingheng stood in front of Gu Yunsheng with quick hands and eyes, grabbing Qin Fengâs wrist. His dark eyes were like two burning flames of anger, his tone bone-chillingly cold: “Where do you want to take him?”
Qin Feng glanced contemptuously at Lu Jinghengâs hand on his wrist and ignored him. He just looked down at Gu Yunsheng, who was leaning almost entirely on Lu Jingheng, his tone as gentle as if treating a fragile treasure: “Baby, come with me. Iâll take you home.” As he spoke, he reached out to put his arm around Gu Yunshengâs waist.
“Let go of him!” Lu Jinghengâs eyes sharpened. He swung Qin Fengâs hand away and pulled Gu Yunsheng behind him, protecting him.
“Who do you think you are to interfere in my business?” Qin Feng finally looked at Lu Jingheng directly, his gaze contemptuous and arrogant. “I suggest you stay out of things that don’t concern you!”
“Yunsheng is my friend. Who do you think I am?” Lu Jingheng struck back without hesitation. “Iâll say it again: let go of him!”
“My thingsâonly I have the right to discard them. When did it become someone else’s turn to interfere!” As Qin Feng spoke, his gaze toward Gu Yunsheng grew more and more possessive. “Baby, come home with me.”
Qin Feng seemed to have heard a great joke. He raised his eyebrows exaggeratedly, and the playful smile on his lips made Gu Yunshengâs heart feel uneasy. “Baby, stop playing. Playing hard to get? Hmm?” He took another step forward. The strong perfume mixed with faint tobacco smell surrounded Gu Yunsheng aggressively.
Gu Yunsheng instinctively backed away, but accidentally stepped on Lu Jinghengâs foot.
He quickly grabbed Lu Jinghengâs arm to stabilize himself, but his body “accidentally” brushed against the other man, and he even feigned an unintentional wink.
“Sir, have you mistaken me for someone else? I said I don’t know you. Please respect yourself!”
In his heart, he went through all the rejection lines he knew, but inwardly he was crying out: Is this man a lunatic?
The smile on Qin Fengâs face gradually disappeared, replaced by a look of hurt and disbelief. He looked at Gu Yunsheng as if the other man had said something atrocious.
“Don’t remember? Between us… you forgot it all?” His gaze landed on Gu Yunsheng, full of invasiveness and possessiveness. “You forgot when you were in my arms…”
“What nonsense are you talking about!” Gu Yunshengâs face flushed red. He practically jumped behind Lu Jingheng. “Say another word and Iâll call the police!” He could see it nowâthis guy was a psycho!
Lu Jingheng, who had been silent, finally exploded.
“Sir, please show some respect!”
The sudden sharp pain made Qin Feng suck in a breath of cold air, but he didn’t struggle. He just looked up at Lu Jingheng, his eyes full of provocation and hostility. “What, your heart aches? I haven’t finished yet. He…”
“Try saying one more word!” Lu Jinghengâs gaze was as cold as ice, and his tone was full of warning.
The air was filled with a thick smell of gunpowder; the war between the two men could break out at any moment.
Other people in the bar also seemed to feel the tension, stopping what they were doing and looking over curiously.
Qin Feng suddenly laughed. He looked down at his wrist which was held firmly by Lu Jingheng, his tone meaningful. “Youâd better keep a close eye on him. Sooner or later, heâll return to my side.” After saying that, despite the pain in his wrist, he shook off Lu Jinghengâs hand, gave Gu Yunsheng a deep look, and turned to leave.
“Baby, wait for me!” The voice was as cloying as honey. Gu Yunsheng felt goosebumps all over, and his head was buzzing.
Good grief. Is it going to be a Shuraba both online and offline? What kind of peach blossom debt did I commit?!
Translator’s Note: “Shuraba” (俎ç˝ĺş) is a scene of messy conflict, usually romantic. “Peach blossom debt” refers to romantic complications or entanglements. It seems Gu Yunsheng was a bit of a playboy before he transmigrated! Also, the ring’s light scaring the man suggests it still has some “System” powers in the real world.
