Chapter 44: The Cruel Truth
Inside a VIP special care ward at Sheng’an Hospital.
It was already past eleven o’clock at night. Zhou Rong had a small light on, leaning against the headboard, wearing reading glasses as she knitted a sweater stitch by stitch.
Once she knitted one more sleeve, this sweater would be finished.
She held up the sweater, looking at it from every angle.
A smile appeared on her somewhat pale face.
“My Xiao Wan is both fair and handsome. He will definitely look good in this color.” She muttered to herself, smiling as she squinted her eyes.
Looking up at the wall clock, she covered her mouth and yawned.
Due to her physical condition, Zhou Rong didn’t know how much longer she could hold on.
A year? A few months?
She felt it wouldn’t be very long.
She wanted to finish knitting this sweater quickly, and then buy some more yarn to knit a scarf for Qin Wan.
She wanted to take care of him a little more during her lifetime.
Thinking of Qin Wan, her already clouded eyes grew even dimmer.
If she were no longer around, her Xiao Wan would have to live all alone with no one to rely on.
Should I contact the Second Young Master?
Zhou Rong was extremely conflicted.
When they left back then, the Second Young Master had instructed her that contacting him haphazardly would likely lead to them being discovered by the cunning and treacherous Eldest Young Master.
If he found out, that black-hearted fellow would definitely not let them go.
Back then, the Madam and the Eldest Young Master were wary of the fact that Qin Wan had the blood of the Sheng family in his veins, so they kept him confined and wouldn’t let him leave.
They held him firmly in their grasp because they were worried that if he ever became powerful one day, he would become a problem for them.
So, if the Eldest Young Master found out about the matter of Qin Wan’s fake death, he would definitely come after him immediately and act against him.
Zhou Rong sighed.
She felt her chest was a bit tight and wanted to go for a walk outside the ward.
She got out of bed and gently pushed open the door.
She stood in the hallway.
She knew there were always two strong young men guarding the door.
She had asked, and they said they were friends of Qin Wan sent to take care of her and handle any heavy labor.
At this moment, those two were standing at the distant smoking area, smoking and chatting.
Zhou Rong felt these two were also working quite hard, and since it was late, she thought about telling them to go back and rest.
She walked slowly until she was a few meters behind them.
She heard the sound of their conversation.
The one with the buzz cut said, “Auntie Rong is truly pitiful. When I looked through the door glass just now, she was still there knitting that sweater.”
The other one in the plaid shirt said, “Yeah, it’s almost finished. I don’t even know if it can be delivered to that little brother’s hands.”
“If she knew President Gu brought her here to recover just to use her as a hostage, she’d be worried to death!”
The buzz cut nodded. “Sigh, that little brother is also really unlucky. Out of everyone to offend, why did he have to offend our Great Demon King master?”
“What kind of person is President Gu? If you offend him, how can you have a good life?”
The plaid shirt frowned. “Hey, you said he’s been kept in the villa by President Gu the whole time, so how did he end up with such a body full of injuries?”
“A while ago, he was hospitalized right downstairs. That day he came up to sneak a look at Auntie Rong, that little face of his… so pale, he looked so pitiful!”
The buzz cut clicked his tongue. “I’m guessing, could it be that our President Gu caused them while playing some perverted games?”
“Hey, let’s stop guessing blindly. As for the boss’s business, see no evil, hear no evil!”
“Right, right, say no more!”
At this moment, Zhou Rong’s entire body began to tremble.
Her face turned deathly pale in an instant.
Everything she had just heard was like a bolt from the blue, nearly shattering her.
Although she had always felt that Qin Wan’s sudden departure and her own transfer to another hospital were a bit strange, it was only a feeling of strangeness. With her level of knowledge, she could never have imagined that such a thing could happen.
Although she didn’t know what kind of person the “President Gu” they spoke of was, he was certainly a powerful figure with immense influence.
Qin Wan had offended him, and he was using her as leverage to imprison him and torture him. This made Zhou Rong’s head buzz and her vision blur.
She didn’t know how she managed to force herself to walk back to the ward.
Sitting on the bed, her eyes were vacant, and her mind was a mess.
From childhood to adulthood, Qin Wan had already suffered so much. Why was this happening again now?
Just how much longer was the Heavens going to torture him?
Zhou Rong sat silently, yet she was already covered in tears.
After a long time, she made a decision.
She absolutely could not let Qin Wan suffer and endure hardships because of her anymore.
At dawn, just as the sky was beginning to brighten, Gu Xinglan’s phone vibrated.
He opened his eyes and gently released his hand from around Qin Wan. He picked up the phone.
Seeing that Xiao Han was calling, a bad premonition suddenly arose in his heart.
He looked at the still-sleeping Qin Wan, then got out of bed quietly.
Without making a sound, he opened the door and stood in the hallway.
Only then did he answer the call.
“President Gu… Zhou Rong is gone.”
Xiao Han’s tone had lost its usual rare composure.
A minute ago, he received a call from his subordinates saying that Zhou Rong had gone out at some point and had never returned to the ward.
They checked the surveillance and found that the person was no longer in the hospital.
Xiao Han knew how important Zhou Rong was to Gu Xinglan. If something happened, he knew the consequences would be severe.
So, he didn’t dare to delay. While calling Gu Xinglan, he hurried toward the hospital.
Hearing this news, Gu Xinglan’s eyes darkened.
His long fingers rubbed his temples.
“Get Tan Feng and find her immediately.” His voice wasn’t loud, but Xiao Han could hear the weight in his words.
“Yes.”
Gu Xinglan stood silently in the hallway for a while before turning and returning to the bedroom with light steps.
Walking to the bedside, he found that Qin Wan had turned over and was lying on his back.
Two buttons at the collar of his white pajamas were undone, revealing his exquisite collarbones and a bit of his chest.
Gu Xinglan’s gaze selectively avoided those dark red scars.
His eyes narrowed slightly, and then he reached out to gently pull up the thin quilt covering Qin Wan’s body.
He got onto the bed and sat leaning against the headboard.
He lowered his head, staring at his face without blinking.
The sleeping Qin Wan was especially cute.
Obedient, soft and cute, and playful.
There was no need to worry about him lying or calculating an escape.
Looking at him like this should have felt very reassuring.
But Gu Xinglan could not feel at ease right now.
Zhou Rong’s whereabouts were unknown for an unknown reason. If something really happened, he could imagine how Qin Wan would break down.
At that time, how would he continue to keep him?
At the thought of this, a surge of uncontrollable irritability rose within Gu Xinglan.
He looked down at him deeply.
As if murmuring to himself, he whispered, “Qin Wan, no matter what happens, I won’t allow you to leave me…”
The person on the bed, in his daze, had his eyelids flutter.
Whether it just happened to coincide with his dream or if he really heard the sentence, his cherry-red lips moved slightly.
His voice was slightly raspy: “Mn, I won’t run anymore, Gege …”
Gu Xinglan’s heart felt as if it were being squeezed tightly by a hand.
Irrepressibly, he leaned down and lightly kissed his forehead, the tip of his nose, and his eyes, finally landing on his soft lips.
He softly called out, “A-Wan…”
