Chapter 59: Chi Che’s Bitter Wait
Seeing Chi Wan’s sorrow, Shen Yu hurriedly spoke:
“Dudu’s emotions are purer than both other robots and humans. From a certain perspective, it is a more precious and advanced existence.”
“I think the Alliance’s robot detection standards must have some problems. Dudu is very good.”
As he spoke, he looked at the mechanical repairer:
“Thank you for your hard work. Please make sure to fix it. If you encounter any difficulties, I can assist with all my strength.”
The repairer’s face lit up, and he nodded repeatedly:
“Then I thank Commander Shen.”
The scale and strength of the Shen family’s mechanical engineering were famous in the galaxy. The Alliance had tried to recruit them many times without success, yet now it was being offered voluntarily.
The two stayed for a while longer before leaving.
Seeing Chi Wan’s low mood, Shen Yu kept looking for topics to talk about.
However, the thinking of a youth who spent all year in the sword practice grounds was truly blunt; most of the topics he found were related to swords.
From sword intent to sword aura, then moving to the similarity between sword movement and energy flow.
His clear voice carried a hint of nervousness and awkwardness that he himself hadn’t noticed because he cared.
By now, the sky was dark. Night lights were lit everywhere in the Alliance. Compared to the daytime, the crowd of Sentinels coming and going had increased rather than decreased, each looking solemn.
Chi Wan stopped her steps and looked up at Shen Yu.
Under her gaze, Shen Yu stopped talking and rubbed the top of his head:
“Do you feel better?”
With that rub, he realized his tiger ears had popped out at some point.
He had actually lost his composure in his nervousness.
His expression remained unchanged, but his jade-like handsome face instantly reddened.
Chi Wan pointed to his light-brain, which kept lighting up:
“It seems someone has been looking for you.”
Only then did Shen Yu react. He opened his light-brain and saw the Alliance messages on it; his expression immediately turned serious.
…
Outside the X-K Alliance.
Shi Liu performed an interstellar salute:
“Sentinel, may I ask if you could help bring a message to Guide Chi Wan?”
The guard Sentinel watching the Alliance walked over and recognized him at a glance as the gold-standard sponsor from the City of Lost mining area.
His expression became more respectful, and his pace quickened:
“Please speak.”
Shi Liu looked at his Young Master, then silently retreated to give the two of them space.
He was confused. His Young Master had been distracted all day, sometimes looking at his light-brain and sometimes falling into deep thought, ignoring everyone.
He had even been pacing in the room—a rare sight.
One must know that back when they were plotted against by other branches of the family and faced heaven-sized problems, he had always remained calm.
When had he ever been like this?
What Shi Liu couldn’t figure out even more was that, with their status, they could obviously go in directly to find Guide Chi Wan. Yet, his Young Master insisted that she might not want to see him, and he feared she’d be unhappy if he approached her abruptly. He felt it was more appropriate to have someone bring a message.
How could Guide Chi Wan not want to see them? Hadn’t she always treated them quite well?
Shi Liu couldn’t figure it out, so he stopped thinking about it.
Looking at the Sentinel in front of him, Chi Che remained silent for two seconds.
Finally, he said in a low voice: “Please ask Guide Chi Wan if she still has stock of the ‘Love Manual’ she mentioned before. I am willing to purchase it at a high price.”
Shi Liu, who was drinking water behind him, was filled with disbelief and almost spat out a mouthful of water.
The Sentinel was also full of question marks. His brows furrowed and relaxed, then furrowed again. Seeing that the extraordinary man in front of him looked serious, he didn’t ask further and quickly ran into the Alliance after leaving a sentence:
“Please wait a moment; I will go ask for you.”
…
As they went deeper into the Alliance, Chi Wan discovered that the number of Sentinels on the square was staggering.
Having received the signal, Shen Yu hurriedly said goodbye and left.
The entire Alliance was radiating a sense of urgency regarding the impending crisis.
Chi Wan opened her light-brain. On the latest Alliance star-news, the first SSS-rank mission was pinned at the top.
Nearly all the participating Commanders were included, while the Sentinels were selected through a voluntary system, following the custom for SSS-rank missions.
The danger level of SSS-rank missions was extremely high, and casualties were unavoidable. Sentinels chose whether to participate based on their own will, and without exception, everyone had to sign a Death Contract before joining.
This included the accompanying Guides.
As she walked through the crowd, the discussions around her inevitably reached her ears.
“I heard the ones before were just minor skirmishes. This mission is the real deal. I heard some insider information at the Commanders’ meeting a few days ago. It’s said we might face off against Grade IX or even Grade X Polluted Entities.”
“I’m more curious about the Sea of Lost. Hasn’t Commander Yun Qi of Base B6 already set out? If he really finds the Sea of Lost and faces his former tribesmen who have all turned into Polluted Entities, can he really bring himself to fight them?”
“That’s why others tried so hard to stop him from participating in this operation, but he insisted on going.”
“Whatever. I’m definitely going. I’m not afraid of death.”
“Although I’m afraid of death, I’m going to this mission too. As a Sentinel, how can there be any reason to back down?”
During their conversation, they saw Chi Wan passing by and couldn’t help but be drawn to her.
The topics of some Sentinels shifted from SSS-rank missions and Polluted Entities to Chi Wan.
“It’s Guide Chi Wan. Do you think she’ll participate in this SSS-rank mission?”
“For such an important mission, she’ll definitely participate, right?”
“I don’t think so. I heard Commander Cang Lin invited her, but she refused.”
“What? Guide Chi Wan isn’t going?! My world has collapsed!”
Among the crowd, a pleasant female voice rang out:
“Guide Chi Wan~”
Chi Wan followed the sound and saw Kui An.
She was standing in line, greeting her with a bright smile:
“Are you also here to line up to sign the Death Contract?”
Chi Wan pursed her lips.
She looked past Kui An. On the Sentinel star-screen at the front of the line, the rules of the Death Contract were displayed.
The Sentinel responsible for signing the contracts had a solemn expression:
“Please confirm again. For this mission, any accidents that occur are voluntary. You still have a chance to change your mind now.”
That Sentinel didn’t hesitate for a second:
“I confirm! I want to sign!”
His gaze was just as firm as every other Sentinel on the square.
In just an instant, Chi Wan made her decision.
She looked up and met Kui An’s shimmering, smiling eyes, nodding with a smile:
“I am.”
There was no surprise in Kui An’s eyes, only teasing:
“I heard you refused Cang Lin’s invitation and thought you wouldn’t be participating.”
Chi Wan simply smiled: “Naturally, I’m not participating because of him. It’s for my duty as a Guide and for these Sentinels who do not fear death.”
Kui An covered her mouth and chuckled.
She really hadn’t misjudged her.
Among the crowded people, a Sentinel was searching everywhere for Chi Wan’s figure.
“Have you seen Guide Chi Wan?”
“Hello, have you seen Guide Chi Wan?”
He asked several people but found no clues. A Sentinel pulled him over:
“Why are you looking for Guide Chi Wan? Hurry up and get in line; the contract signing is almost closing!”
The Sentinel looked up at the front of the line, gritted his teeth, and finally decided to join the queue first.
The guard Sentinel waiting on the outskirts received no information and could only return the way he came.
Inside the protective barrier outside the Alliance, the refined man waited quietly.
“Mr. Chi, there’s no reply. I don’t have access to the inner Alliance. Right now, the Alliance is quite busy; I fear that Sentinel couldn’t find her.”
“We ordinary Sentinels can’t contact Guide Chi Wan’s light-brain either. My apologies.”
Chi Che’s eyelids lowered slightly, and his quiet dark eyes deepened.
“Young Master, the spaceship has been waiting for a long time. We should set out.”
