Chapter 49: Baby, Caught You
Wen Yuhuai’s lips pressed into a tight line, his nerves drawn taut like a bowstring. He snatched his phone to message Wen Chenglin and Wen Yuzhou. Just as the messages went out, a text popped up at the top of the screen.
It was from an unknown number, and it was very short—just a single line.
[Baby runs so slowly. I’m going to catch you.]
The phone slipped from his grasp and clattered to the floor. Wen Yuhuai’s ears rang, his heart pounding in his throat. He sat stunned for several seconds before finally bending down to retrieve it.
Messages from Wen Yuzhou and Wen Chenglin continued to pop up on the screen, but Wen Yuhuai had no mind to read them. His head was filled with that one short sentence.
The phone rang in the quiet cabin. Wen Yuhuai slowly tapped to answer, and Wen Chenglin’s voice came through.
“Little Huai, don’t make any sudden moves. Have Jiang Qiao and the others stay where they are; we’re turning around to come back to you right now.”
Wen Yuhuai opened his mouth to say it wasn’t necessary, but Wen Chenglin quickly added, “It’s Friday, and the morning rush hour is about to start. They can’t block the road for long. The most important thing right now is your safety.”
Wen Yuhuai finally forced the words out of his throat. “I understand.”
Sure enough, not long after Wen Chenglin spoke, the fleet of cars began to show signs of being broken up by the morning commuters behind them.
Jiang Qiao’s eyes narrowed. “Hold on tight, Young Master,” he warned in a deep voice. With a step on the gas, he seized an opening and burst through the blockade.
The call was still connected, and Wen Chenglin heard the noise. “You got out?”
Wen Yuhuai clung to the window, eyes fixed on the cars behind them. A few were still in stubborn pursuit, but they couldn’t organize an effective blockade anymore.
He let out a long breath, his taut nerves finally relaxing slightly. “We’re out for now, but there are still cars chasing us.”
Jiang Jing’s voice came through the phone as well. “Don’t be afraid, son. We see your car.”
Wen Yuhuai looked ahead. Sure enough, the other Wen family car was just ahead and to the left, hazard lights flashing.
“You guys keep going. We’ll turn around at the next intersection and catch up.”
Wen Yuhuai kept his eyes glued to the road the entire way. It wasn’t until ten minutes later, when the two cars were driving side-by-side and the pursuing vehicles had faded into the distance, that he finally let his guard down completely.
He knew it. No matter how powerful the person behind this was, they couldn’t just kidnap someone in broad daylight.
The cars arrived safely at the airport. Wen Yuhuai stepped out, and Jiang Jing and Wen Chenglin hurried over from the other car.
Wen Chenglin’s expression was grim. “Was it the same person who kidnapped you before?”
Wen Yuhuai, looking pale, nodded. “It was him.”
Wen Chenglin checked his watch. “I already called the police from the car. They should be here soon.”
Wen Yuhuai frowned instinctively. “The police might not be able to handle this.”
More accurately, they definitely wouldn’t be able to. This was Beijing. For that person to dare pull a stunt like this, they must have terrifying power and influence.
“It’s better than nothing. Regardless, they need to give us an explanation for such a severe incident happening in broad daylight, and they need to give the public an explanation too.”
Little Wen Chi, holding onto Jiang Jing’s hand, trotted over and hugged his leg. “Don’t be afraid, Uncle. Little Chi will protect you.”
Wen Yuhuai’s heart melted. He bent down, picked up the little boy, and kissed his cheek. “Uncle believes in our Little Chi.”
Wen Chenglin’s expression also relaxed a fraction as he instructed the two bodyguards. “You two go check the luggage and print the boarding passes.”
The bodyguards pushed the luggage carts away. After waiting in the airport hall for over ten minutes, several police officers finally arrived.
“Mr. Wen, are you the one who called the police?”
Wen Chenglin nodded expressionlessly. “Yes. On our way to the airport today, unidentified vehicles intercepted and cornered our car. I want a reasonable explanation.”
The officer nodded while taking notes. “Rest assured, Mr. Wen. The station is already pulling the traffic camera footage from that road, and the Maybach has been impounded.”
He paused, his gaze sweeping over the group. “However, this incident might get complicated. We’ll need one of you to stay behind to assist with the investigation.”
Wen Chenglin frowned. “You can contact my assistant, or you can call me directly anytime.”
But the officer insisted, “We need an eyewitness at the scene.”
Wen Yuhuai set Wen Chi down and took a step forward. “I’ll stay.”
“No.” He had barely spoken when both Wen Chenglin and Jiang Jing immediately shot him down.
The person behind this was targeting Wen Yuhuai. Leaving him behind was like throwing a sheep to the wolves.
“Forget it.” Annoyed, Wen Chenglin waved off the officers.
“Just find out the license plates of those cars and let me know. You don’t need to investigate anything else. None of us are staying behind.”
With that, he turned sharply and headed toward the security checkpoint. “Let’s go. Security first.”
“Uncle Wen, Auntie Jiang.”
The group paused. Wen Chenglin looked back, surprised to see who it was. “Xingjian? Why are you here?”
Fu Xingjian smiled, the corners of his lips curving upward. “I heard you and Auntie Jiang were heading to Shenzhen today, so I came to see you off.”
His gaze shifted to the police officers. “Is there a problem?”
Wen Chenglin frowned deeply. “Just some frustrating trouble, but it can wait. We’ll deal with it later.”
But Fu Xingjian took the initiative to press the issue. “I saw an accident on my way here. Did it have something to do with you, Uncle Wen?”
Wen Chenglin’s expression shifted slightly. He nodded and gave a brief summary of the events, ending with, “Xingjian, whoever is behind this is far too arrogant.”
Fu Xingjian’s expression grew serious. He looked directly at Wen Chenglin. “Do you trust me, Uncle Wen?”
Wen Chenglin’s expression softened. He stepped forward and patted his shoulder, looking gratified. “Of course I trust you. That’s why I’d like to ask you to keep an eye on this matter for me.”
Fu Xingjian’s gaze shifted to Wen Yuhuai, his eyes dark and unfathomable. “Is Ah Yu leaving too?”
Wen Yuhuai had been trying to minimize his presence ever since he heard Fu Xingjian’s voice. But you can’t hide from what’s coming. He forced himself to nod silently.
Fu Xingjian smiled, looking back at Wen Chenglin with a serious expression. “Do you trust me, Uncle Wen?”
Wen Chenglin paused, then said, “Of course.”
Fu Xingjian replied, “The person behind this has a special background. Even I would find it difficult to intervene directly. Why not let Ah Yu stay behind? The culprit will eventually reveal themselves.”
Wen Chenglin hesitated for a second, his brows furrowing again. “But Ah Yu’s safety…”
Fu Xingjian offered a gentle smile. “Ah Yu can stay at my place for now.”
???
Wen Yuhuai’s head snapped up. Staying with him was no different from throwing a sheep to the wolves! He opened his mouth to refuse, but Wen Chenglin had already made up his mind. “Then we’ll have to trouble you, Xingjian.”
Fu Xingjian was the picture of a perfect gentleman. “It’s no trouble at all, Uncle Wen.”
Between the delay on the road and the time spent in the hall, it was almost time to board. Wen Chenglin decisively led the rest of the group toward the security checkpoint. As he walked away, he didn’t forget to lecture Wen Yuhuai. “You can learn the ropes anywhere. Stick close to Xingjian, listen, observe, and do the work. And stop causing trouble.”
Wen Yuhuai: “…”
Was he really just being abandoned like this?
And Fu Xingjian just had to add insult to injury, looking at him leisurely. “Ah Yu, shall we?”
Wen Yuhuai didn’t want to go with him, but compared to him, that pervert was clearly much scarier. After standing frozen for a moment, he swallowed his pride and followed, muttering, “Just drop me off at my house. I’m not going to yours.”
Fu Xingjian smiled slightly but said nothing.
When they reached the car, Wen Yuhuai ignored the open passenger door and got straight into the back seat.
Fu Xingjian didn’t seem to mind. He closed the door himself and got into the driver’s seat.
Wen Yuhuai didn’t say a single word during the ride, simply staring blankly at the cityscape flashing by the window. After a while, he suddenly realized something was wrong.
This wasn’t the way back to the Wen residence. Nor was it the way to Fu Xingjian’s place. It was an unfamiliar road leading toward the outskirts of the city.
“Fu Xingjian, where are you taking me?”
He instinctively looked forward, locking eyes with the dark, gloomy gaze in the rearview mirror.
A chill seemed to creep up his spine. Wen Yuhuai’s heart leapt into his throat. His trembling fingers reached for the door handle—both rear doors were locked.
“Fu Xingjian, you…”
Just then, his phone chimed with a notification. The screen lit up automatically, illuminating Wen Yuhuai’s pale face.
It was a message from that unknown number again. Not a text, but a voice message—one that played automatically as soon as it was opened.
A burst of static white noise hissed through the speakers. Wen Yuhuai’s mind went completely blank. Stripped of his ability to think, he instinctively looked forward, catching sight of the man’s pale profile half-hidden in the shadows.
He seemed to smile, the corner of his lips curving upward. The next second, a slightly hoarse voice spoke unhurriedly from the front seat, merging eerily with the digitally altered voice coming from the phone.
“Baby, caught you.”
