Chapter 150: “I Want to Go Back to Baimeng, to Our Home.”
The final result was that all personnel from Headquarters required for the post-war meeting flew day and night to the Eastern Command.
The current Eastern Commander tremblingly cleared out a large conference room. Having grown up on the eastern border, he had never seen so many high-ranking leaders in one place.
While Du Feng went next door for the meeting, Shen Zhuo contacted the acting minister at the Royal Palace, asking him to send over some government affairs for review.
Currently, both the military and the Palace relied solely on Du Feng’s support; even a man made of iron wouldn’t be able to hold out forever.
He had the pain-blocking agent from Ynntut to thank, as it allowed him to regain some energy after sleeping for three days.
The minister sent concerned inquiries along with several important administrative tasks. Shen Zhuo held his laptop on the hospital bed, processing them one by one.
Before leaving, Du Feng had left behind enough soothing pheromones to last the entire day. However, Shen Zhuo’s body was indeed reaching its limit; after only half an hour of work, his gland began to throb with a faint ache.
His phone suddenly vibrated. Shen Zhuo opened it to find a message from Xie Zhen.
[I’ve sent someone to deliver the S5 recovery agent to you. It should be helpful.]
Shen Zhuo replied with a thank you and an emoji. Putting the phone down, he forced himself to continue reviewing the documents.
“So busy, aren’t you afraid your body won’t be able to take it?”
A young Alpha’s voice came from outside the door.
Liang Yeta stood not far away, holding a small transparent box. He handed the box to the approaching nurse and did not move closer to Shen Zhuo. Maintaining a deliberate distance from the youth, he simply stood at the doorway of the ward and smiled:
“Congratulations. You’re going to be a father.”
Shen Zhuo met Liang Yeta’s gaze. There was no retreating or flinching; it seemed he had reached some sort of promise or agreement with Fu Qishang.
“Thank you,” Shen Zhuo nodded with a smile. “Why are you here?”
Liang Yeta still maintained his elegant posture in a sharp suit. He glanced at Shen Zhuo’s IV drip, confirming it wouldn’t need changing for a while, before adding:
“Xie Zhen asked me to come by. I have to head over to Qishang’s side in a moment; Ai Li and the Princess’s medicine will be delivered by him.”
Shen Zhuo had heard that Jingyue had taken charge of most of the post-war military supplies. Although Liang Yeta hadn’t stepped onto the battlefield, he had helped the military immensely from the rear.
Everyone had their own place to shine. This feeling made Shen Zhuo sincerely happy.
Shen Zhuo asked, “How is Qishang doing now?”
Liang Yeta shook his head. “I don’t know. The people there say he’s alright, but I’m heading over as quickly as possible, so I won’t chat with you for long.”
As expected, after openly admitting his feelings, Liang Yeta had become much more proactive. Shen Zhuo finally breathed a sigh of relief regarding the relationship between the two.
“I’m leaving now. Stop looking at the computer and take care of your health.”
Liang Yeta’s meeting with Shen Zhuo lasted less than ten minutes in total before he hurried onto a departing flight to catch up to where Fu Qishang was located.
Once the doctor confirmed the treatment agent was effective, they added it to Shen Zhuo’s IV bag. It had the same effect as the agent from the auction—no, it was even better than that clinical version.
As soon as the orange-red liquid entered his body, Shen Zhuo felt a warm itchiness at his gland and his wounds.
Shen Zhuo knew the post-war meeting would last a long time. However, he didn’t expect Du Feng to return barely an hour later.
“What’s wrong?”
Suddenly pulled into an embrace, Shen Zhuo didn’t know what had happened.
His cheek was held and kissed. Du Feng said, “I missed you.”
Du Feng saw the laptop on Shen Zhuo’s lap; the screen was still on a newly drafted legal resolution. The man’s face instantly clouded with anger. With a snap, he shut the laptop and tossed it aside, tucking the youth into the blankets.
“You aren’t to do anything right now. Sleep.”
The anger was, of course, feigned, but if he wasn’t firm, this disobedient child would probably sneak the laptop out again the moment he left.
“Is the meeting over?”
Shen Zhuo found it amusing. The blanket had been pulled up to his neck by Du Feng, surrounding him in a soft ring. Only the top half of his face was visible, making his voice sound muffled.
“No. I missed you, so I interrupted the meeting to come see you.”
Du Feng was more childish than usual, yet Shen Zhuo frowned. His left hand, which wasn’t hooked to the IV, gripped Du Feng’s sleeve.
“You can’t do that. Focus on the meeting. I won’t go anywhere; I’m right here.”
“But…” Du Feng’s voice deepened significantly. “I didn’t delay the meeting. They are currently discussing the proposals.”
His pitiful, aggrieved look made Shen Zhuo unable to say anything more.
“Go back quickly,” Shen Zhuo touched his hand.
Du Feng took the laptop with him, along with Shen Zhuo’s phone. He put on a movie with a lighthearted atmosphere on the projector before gently closing the door.
The dialogue of the movie was more hypnotic than a silent room. Shen Zhuo leaned against the pillow, his fingers resting on his lower abdomen.
Between being half-asleep and half-awake, he suddenly remembered the sensation he felt before his abilities leveled up. If he hadn’t upgraded his power and rank, he would have surely died. But he felt a surge of energy from his lower abdomen helping him awaken. It felt as if the baby had saved his life.
“Maybe you’re even more powerful than we are,” Shen Zhuo whispered. “Thank you, baby.”
Lost in thought, he soon fell into a deep sleep due to physical exhaustion.
During the post-war meeting, the Eastern Commander played a blurred video recording. It captured the state of the battlefield just before and after the arrival of the final wave of the insect tide, right at the boundary where the signal was lost.
Everyone held their breath.
They all knew that before the final wave arrived, there were almost no survivors among the twenty thousand men led by Shen Zhuo. How exactly was that final battle won? They were completely baffled.
The battlefield in the footage was as silent as a grave; the tragic sight of corpses strewn across the land and rivers of blood was the most severe of all the border lines.
The heavy rain hadn’t stopped. A blurry figure could be seen raising the Imperial flag in the distance. The national flag was soaked by the rain into a shade of gray.
Then, the entire screen began to vibrate.
One after another, broken corpses crawled out from the ruins. True walking dead, as if controlled, they moved forward slowly, step by step.
The flag was planted into the soil, and the blurry figure could no longer be tracked. The only thing the footage could capture was the constant stream of soldiers crawling out.
The army of corpses would no longer fall due to death; they stood up again and again, throwing themselves into the slaughter against the insect tide.
The imagery was shocking and horrifying to the extreme. If they hadn’t seen it with their own eyes, no one would believe such a thing could happen in this world. That someone’s ability could actually break the boundary between life and death.
“Ma… Majesty,” one of the officers stammered as he looked at Du Feng.
“This is Major General Shen’s ability,” Du Feng paused for a moment. “He has become even stronger.”
“Isn’t an ability like this a bit too…” An officer began to worry.
This was an ability that had never appeared in the history of the Empire. To actually be able to control corpses. It was too terrifying. Once a certain power became so great that it was beyond comprehension, people would start to harbor suspicions.
“If you doubt him, how are you any different from Feng Ling?”
Du Feng gave him a cold look. The man immediately lowered his head and apologized, “No… no, Commander-in-Chief. I am just a bit worried that if such an ability were used by someone with ill intentions…”
Du Feng stood up, his chair scraping against the floor with a piercing screech.
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re thinking.”
The Alpha’s gaze was indifferent, yet his expressionless face made the air instantly suffocating. “The Command Center is not a place for power struggles. You may leave.”
The man’s face turned deathly pale. He wanted to explain, but he was dragged away by two others.
The Eastern Commander was also seeing this side of Du Feng—decisive and ruthless—for the first time, and he hadn’t quite figured out what had happened.
The person next to him lowered his voice, explaining in a tone only the two of them could hear: “That man was afraid Major General Shen would take his position, so he said those things. Such a person doesn’t deserve to stay in Headquarters.”
The Eastern Commander nodded in realization. He hadn’t expected there to be infighting even at Headquarters; it seemed choosing to stay at the border was indeed the right decision.
Du Feng turned to gaze at the crowd. “Does anyone else have anything to say?”
Everyone immediately shook their heads.
“With that ability, he is more than qualified to take over my position.”
The man’s tone was so calm it sounded like he was stating a mundane fact. Yet anyone could hear the underlying sense of boasting.
The people in the conference room thought for a moment and realized what Du Feng said was true. During the last ten waves of the insect tide at the Eastern Command, the youth had arranged almost all the strategies. Their precision and flexibility could rival Du Feng’s. If anyone in the Empire was fit to be the next Commander-in-Chief, it was likely Major General Shen.
Du Feng sat back down and tapped the table. “The meeting continues.”
It wasn’t until six hours later, in the evening, that the post-war meeting finally concluded. During the session, Du Feng would still occasionally check the neighboring ward to look at the sleeping youth.
Shen Zhuo was unaware. He woke up feeling much more relaxed physically.
“Let’s go back tomorrow, shall we?” Shen Zhuo looked at Du Feng, who was wiping his body down.
Du Feng used the slightly hot towel to gently wipe the youth’s legs. He turned his head, his expression suggesting he didn’t quite agree. “Your body won’t be able to handle such a long journey.”
“But I want to go home. I want to go back to Baimeng.” Shen Zhuo stubbornly pulled his leg back, only for Du Feng to hold it down.
The man had no choice but to compromise. “Alright, alright, my little ancestor. We’ll go back to Baimeng.”
The transport flight wasn’t as exhausting as imagined, perhaps because Du Feng was by his side.
All along the way, Shen Zhuo did nothing but lie on Du Feng, listening to him talk about the events of the past few days and the situation in various regions, sleeping whenever he felt tired.
Aside from rather severe morning sickness, everything else was much better than before the war.
As soon as they got off the plane, Shen Zhuo saw An standing outside with the stewards.
“Madam! Master!”
An showed a beaming smile and bowed along with all the stewards. “Welcome home.”
Baimeng was no different from before they left; it even looked refreshed due to the repainted exterior walls.
“Baimeng is still the most comfortable.” Only after returning to this familiar place did Shen Zhuo realize he hadn’t been back for nearly half a year. So much had happened in those six months that it felt like an eternity had passed.
While Du Feng went to the kitchen to make some snacks, An quietly approached. “Madam, does the Master know about that matter?”
Shen Zhuo blinked and gave an “oh.” “He knows.”
An showed a disappointed expression but quickly rallied. “It’s fine even if he knows. You and the Master haven’t celebrated your birthdays this year either. Why don’t we celebrate together once your friends have recovered?”
The insect tide had ended, and the Broodmother was destroyed, meaning there wouldn’t be a war more difficult than this one in the future.
It’s time to celebrate, Shen Zhuo thought to himself. Put all the missed anniversaries together, let everyone relax, and have a wild celebration.
