Chapter 29: Going to Drink My Fill Tonight
Receiving a call from Qiao Yubai felt the same as seeing his WeChat messages—familiar yet strange.
The sky outside had already turned dark. Ye Ran didn’t know why Qiao Yubai would call him at this time.
Regardless of the reason, he still answered the phone. The first thing to reach his ears was the noisy music typical of a bar, followed by a panicked voice.
“Are… are you Ran-ge?”
In just one second, Ye Ran identified that this wasn’t Qiao Yubai.
First, the voice was wrong. Second, Qiao Yubai wouldn’t call him “Ran-ge.” In their few meetings so far, Qiao Yubai had always called him “Ge.”
Ye Ran’s voice turned heavy. “Who are you?”
The person on the other side’s voice trembled slightly, whether from fear or from being caught off guard by Ye Ran’s realization. “Ran-ge, I’m Xiao Bai’s classmate. We’re having a class reunion today, and he drank a bit too much. Can you come pick him up?”
Ye Ran gave a cold snort. “Call the tenth person in his contact list and have them pick him up.”
The other party replied almost instantly, “Are you talking about Qing-ge? I already called, and he said he doesn’t have time…”
With one sentence, the truth was exposed.
Qiao Yubai probably didn’t even know who the tenth person in his contact list was without checking his phone first, yet this person had blurted out Ye Muqing’s name without even looking. Clearly, they knew the relationship between Ye Muqing and Qiao Yubai.
They should also know that Qiao Yubai was currently living at the Ye residence. The most glaring issue was that he claimed to have already called Ye Muqing and was told he didn’t have time.
Based on Ye Ran’s understanding of his “stupid second brother,” if the call didn’t go through, that was one thing, but once it did and he knew Qiao Yubai was in trouble, he would make time even if he had none.
Piecing together all these inconsistencies, everything pointed to one conclusion: Qiao Yubai was not free. His phone must have been taken by someone else.
But he didn’t know why the other party wanted to call him?
Why not go to the Ye family or the Qiao family? If it was for extortion, those two families were richer than him.
Ye Ran spoke calmly, “Then you’ve found the wrong person. I’m not close with Qiao Yubai.”
The person on the other side acted as if they had anticipated his words and prepared an answer in advance. “But Xiao Bai said you’re his biological brother.”
As soon as the person finished speaking, Ye Ran had already stood up and grabbed his coat, his long legs striding toward the door.
He tugged at his collar, a light chuckle escaping his throat, though the laughter was wrapped in a bone-chilling coldness. “Heh, what a hassle.”
Ye Ran was absolutely certain that the other party was coming for him.
Thinking back on the things he had done, Young Master Ye was known to be fearless—a famous dandy in Jing City. The people he could have offended…
Ye Ran stopped thinking about it. There were too many, and they were all losers. Because the only person who could win against him and the only person he feared was Chi Yuheng.
So, was it those people who couldn’t stand him but couldn’t get rid of him shifting their target to Qiao Yubai?
Or was it that they wanted to use Qiao Yubai as bait to lure him out?
No matter what the other party was planning, they were being far too conceited. Even if, biologically speaking, he was Qiao Yubai’s brother, they hadn’t reached the point where they would sacrifice themselves for one another.
Even so, Ye Ran would still go.
People looking for trouble wouldn’t stop just because you hid once. You can hide on the first, but you can’t hide on the fifteenth.
As Ye Ran was heading out, Xin Yu was about to enter. Seeing Ye Ran in such a hurry with his car keys, he immediately spoke up, “It’s already dark. Where are you going? The Eldest Young Master will be back soon.”
Ye Ran didn’t stop his pace, his voice carrying a hint of casualness. “I made plans with friends to go to a bar. Help me deal with Chi Yuheng; I’ll be back later.”
Xin Yu wanted to say something more, but Ye Ran had already stepped on the gas and driven off, leaving him with a face full of exhaust fumes.
Xin Yu: “…”
Asking him to help deal with Chi Yuheng while going to a bar… was he trying to send him to his death?
If he really helped cover for him and it was discovered later, he would probably die a very miserable death.
Xin Yu let out a soft sigh and turned to enter the house, but then his footsteps suddenly paused.
In the past, when the Young Master went to a bar and didn’t want President Chi to know, he wouldn’t tell Xin Yu either. This was because Ye Ran knew well that Xin Yu couldn’t lie to Chi Yuheng at all; telling him was the same as telling Chi Yuheng.
So, the fact that he said that just now was… to let Chi Yuheng know.
Realizing this, Xin Yu didn’t dare delay any longer and immediately took out his phone to call Chi Yuheng.
…
The engine of the sea-blue McLaren let out a piercing low roar. Ye Ran tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, his right foot slowly pressing the accelerator to the floor.
The car body instantly broke free of its shackles, the tires letting out a sharp screech against the ground, leaving a fleeting phantom on the deserted suburban streets.
Finally, he stopped in front of a bar. Ye Ran got out and checked the location the other party had sent. It was the bar in front of him. Ye Ran pushed the door open without hesitation.
Arriving at the door of VIP Room 899, someone was waiting for him.
Ye Ran took a glance. This person was about the same age as Qiao Yubai. He didn’t look like a hoodlum; instead, he wore simple clothes and a pair of white sneakers on his feet—looking quite honest.
Ye Ran’s face showed no expression. “Are you the one who called me?”
The boy almost cried as soon as he saw Ye Ran and hurriedly ran over. “Ran-ge, I had no choice. My mom is sick and needs money. They… they gave me a sum of money to lure Xiao Bai out and then use your relationship to call you. I had no choice, I really had no choice…”
The more he spoke, the more emotional he became, until he finally squatted down, holding his head and crying bitterly.
Ye Ran stood still on the spot. He had never seen a man cry before, and he certainly didn’t know how to comfort one.
It wasn’t until the boy had cried his fill and stood up that Ye Ran spoke indifferently, “Done crying?”
The boy wiped his tears and nodded.
Ye Ran raised his hand and patted his shoulder. “Since you’re done crying, go to the front and tell them to bring in more alcohol. I haven’t touched a drink in nearly a month. I’m going to drink my fill tonight.”
Translator’s Note:
- You can hide on the first, but you can’t hide on the fifteenth: A Chinese idiom meaning you can dodge trouble for a while, but it will eventually catch up to you.
- Qing-ge: Referring to Ye Muqing.
