I Raised a Cub in the Military Academy Chapter 1

Chapter 1: A Shimmering Green Atop the Head

Fense Academy was the Empire’s premier military academy.

The moment Yun Yingzhi woke up in the morning, he immediately logged onto the academy’s official website to see if the roster for today’s Ranking War had been announced.

At the end of every academic year, a friendly competition was held between the Empire’s top ten military academies, also known as the Empire’s Top Ten Ranking War. The participants for this war were generally selected about two months after the start of the term, based on the students’ grades and performance.

Yun Yingzhi knew himself very well. As someone who had entered the Empire’s First Military Academy through the “back door” using his family connections, it was impossible for him to be chosen as a member of the Ranking War.

However, while he couldn’t do it, his childhood friend and boyfriend of over half a year could.

Unlike Yun Yingzhi, who relied on connections, Huai Boshe—who also hailed from a prestigious family—had entered Fense Academy with the top scores as the grade’s valedictorian.

Soon, Yun Yingzhi found Huai Boshe’s name on the list published on the official website.

Students selected for the Ranking War were typically juniors or seniors. Yun Yingzhi and Huai Boshe were only sophomores. While the Ranking War did accept a portion of second-year students, those individuals were invariably the cream of the crop, boasting exceptional personal strength and outstanding comprehensive scores across all fields.

When Yun Yingzhi saw Huai Boshe’s name among the sophomores, he felt genuinely happy for him. He immediately sent a video call to Huai Boshe.

The dial tone rang for about half a minute before the connection went through. Huai Boshe’s image appeared in the video projection.

Since there were rarely any morning classes today, Huai Boshe clearly hadn’t fully woken up yet. His pale amber eyes were slightly narrowed as he looked at Yun Yingzhi dizzily, saying, “Oh, it’s Yingzhi. Good morning.”

The smile on Yun Yingzhi’s face deepened. “Boshe, congratulations!”

Huai Boshe rubbed his eyes and asked, “Did something happen?”

Yun Yingzhi replied, “You’ve been selected! Your name is on the list for this year’s Ranking War!”

Huai Boshe froze for a moment, instantly becoming alert. He sat halfway up in bed, the soft duvet sliding down to reveal his sturdy physique. He had a habit of sleeping naked.

Looking at Huai Boshe’s exposed chest muscles, healthy wheat-colored skin, and sexy eight-pack abs, Yun Yingzhi’s face flushed crimson despite the projection screen. He instinctively looked away, not daring to meet Huai Boshe’s gaze.

Huai Boshe asked, “Yingzhi, what about Yao Yao? Was Yao Yao selected?”

Yun Yingzhi frowned.

The announcement time for the Ranking War roster was very random every year. Yun Yingzhi had seen it immediately because he had been refreshing the academy’s website daily.

Huai Boshe’s strength lay in individual combat. Ever since he enrolled, he had been the grade’s top student. However, when selecting participants for the Ranking War, the academy prioritized well-rounded students for the first and second years. Therefore, despite his individual prowess, Huai Boshe hadn’t been selected during his freshman year.

The “Yao Yao” Huai Boshe was concerned about was Yun Yingyao, Yun Yingzhi’s biological younger sister. She was this year’s freshman representative at Fense Academy and the top-ranked student of the first-year class.

It could be said that the three of them had grown up together. Yun Yingzhi could understand Huai Boshe caring about Yun Yingyao, but he still felt a bit jealous. Primarily, it was because Yun Yingzhi and Yun Yingyao were only a year apart, yet the gap between them was immense.

In the Los Empire, a portion of the population could differentiate into a “Second Form.” Those with a Second Form also had a certain chance of awakening combat abilities. This was a prerequisite for entering the combat departments of the top ten military academies.

Second Forms were ranked; the higher the rank, the stronger the power.

Yun Yingyao had differentiated at the age of three into a Polar Bear. She possessed a coat of white fur and had awakened several rare ice-type abilities. Not only was her individual combat strength formidable, but she was also capable of group warfare.

Compared to Yun Yingyao, Yun Yingzhi felt a wave of internal bleeding. He was actually quite envious of this sister who was a year younger than him.

Yun Yingzhi’s Second Form was… a little white rabbit.

The kind of smooth, soft, long-eared, short-tailed little white rabbit that many families in the Empire still kept as adorable pets. He looked obedient, gentle, and utterly cute.

Among the three children of the Yun family, the eldest brother was a bird of prey, and the younger sister was a fierce beast. Only Yun Yingzhi was a fragile little rabbit with zero combat capability.

Madame Yun disliked Yun Yingzhi intensely, considering him the shame of the Yun family. In contrast, General Yun and Madame Yun both doted on Yun Yingyao. Because so many people around him favored his sister, Yun Yingzhi hoped that at the very least, his lover wouldn’t pay her too much attention.

Yun Yingzhi looked at Huai Boshe on the other end, pursed his lips, and said unhappily, “Why do you always care so much about Yao Yao?”

Huai Boshe chuckled. “Yingzhi, Yao Yao is your sister, and we’ve been playmates since we were kids. Of course I care about her.”

Yun Yingzhi muttered, “Even I don’t care about her as much as you do.”

Huai Boshe said, “Alright, alright, don’t be angry. Was Yao Yao selected?”

“I didn’t notice. I only looked for yours.”

Huai Boshe said, “Wait a moment, let me see if Yao Yao was chosen.”

Yun Yingzhi blinked, feeling a bit stunned. He didn’t know if he was overthinking things, but he always felt that Huai Boshe’s focus on Yun Yingyao was excessive. Thinking about it, even as her brother, he didn’t pay her that much attention.

However, he then reminded himself that he hadn’t been close to her mainly because they were only a year apart and had always been in a stage of competing for their parents’ affection. Their relationship wasn’t a normal sibling dynamic.

Yun Yingzhi shook his head, telling himself that Huai Boshe had been the one to confess first. It was him Huai Boshe liked, so there was no need to overthink. Huai Boshe only cared about her because she was his sister.

Yun Yingzhi told himself not to worry and opened the academy forum on his personal projection panel, intending to check if Yun Yingyao had been selected.

Huai Boshe was faster than him.

Huai Boshe’s amber eyes curved, his face full of joy as he said, “Yingzhi, Yao Yao was selected!”

Yun Yingzhi thought his sister really was impressive. “Yao Yao is amazing.”

Huai Boshe added, “Yeah. I’ll contact Yao Yao first to tell her the good news!”

Yun Yingzhi froze, his mind momentarily blank. By the time he reacted, Huai Boshe had already disconnected the call.

Yun Yingzhi: “…”

Yun Yingzhi’s eyelid twitched. He stared at his personal terminal for a moment before sending another communication request to Huai Boshe.

A prompt came from the other end: The party is currently busy, please try again later.

It was precisely because of this that Yun Yingzhi felt Huai Boshe’s concern for his sister was a bit much. He felt this really wasn’t normal. Yun Yingzhi irritably ruffled his hair, feeling a bit of a breakdown inside.

His three roommates looked at him and asked with concern what was wrong.

Yun Yingzhi had entered Fense Academy through the back door and was placed in the bottom-tier class of the combat department. His three roommates were in similar situations, having been assigned to the tail-end class for various reasons.

Yun Yingzhi looked at them and briefly explained the situation regarding Yun Yingyao.

The three roommates were full of amazement.

Among them, Yu Feiwen, who had the best relationship with Yun Yingzhi, said, “Congratulations to Sister Yingyao! Even our grade’s valedictorian didn’t get a spot in the Ranking War during his freshman year. Your sister being selected as a freshman means she’s incredibly strong in all aspects.”

The other two roommates also offered their congratulations.

Yu Feiwen then asked, “But you don’t look very happy. Did something bad happen?”

Yun Yingzhi thought for a moment, looked at his roommates solemnly, and said, “This is something that happened to a friend of mine.”

The three roommates looked at Yun Yingzhi with subtle expressions. Generally, “I have a friend” was another way of saying “that friend is me.” None of them exposed him, instead mirroring his serious expression.

Yun Yingzhi weighed his words. “It’s like this… I have a friend who has a girlfriend…”

The roommates’ gazes became even more intense.

Yu Feiwen narrowed his eyes. “You have a girlfriend?”

“Who is she?” another roommate stepped forward, grabbing Yun Yingzhi’s hand.

“How come we’ve never heard you mention this before?” the third roommate asked.

The atmosphere in the four-man dorm suddenly became tense, as if the three roommates were facing a great enemy. Their exaggerated reactions stunned Yun Yingzhi. He nervously touched his lips and said, “…No, no, I don’t have a girlfriend. It’s… it’s just a friend of mine.”

At Huai Boshe’s request, their relationship had always been a secret. Yun Yingzhi didn’t mind going public, but Huai Boshe said that since they were both male, both sons of Imperial Generals, and still students, it wasn’t good for others to know about their relationship yet.

Hearing Yun Yingzhi’s words, the three finally believed it really was just a “friend.” The tense atmosphere dissipated instantly.

Yun Yingzhi didn’t know it, but while his sister Yun Yingyao was a genius in his eyes—possessing a powerful Second Form and being an all-rounder since childhood—he himself was something else in the eyes of the students.

In Fense Academy, Yun Yingzhi, currently in the second-year tail-end class, was the only outlier among a pack of tigers, leopards, bears, and lions. His Second Form was a soft, adorable, snow-white little rabbit about 30cm long.

Aside from his cute Second Form, his most attractive feature was his beauty. He had soft, black, slightly curly hair, ink-black eyes, a high-bridged nose, and naturally red lips. It had to be said that his features hit everyone’s aesthetic preferences perfectly. People couldn’t help but follow him with their eyes, and after looking enough, they naturally fell for him.

Fense Academy held a “School Flower” and “School Grass” poll every academic year. Ever since he entered the school, he had consistently led the polls by a landslide, winning the “School Flower” title.

As a boy, he was Fense Academy’s number one School Flower.

Based on looks alone, his fame in Fense Academy was no less than any genius student, and he was even more famous than his sister, Yun Yingyao.

According to those who hadn’t met him in person, they would say, “Yun Yingzhi is useless except for his face. You guys are so vulgar to like someone like that.” After those people actually saw him, they wouldn’t take back their words, but they would add one sentence: “I didn’t know I was such a vulgar person until I saw him!”

Under the gaze of his roommates, Yun Yingzhi continued, “My friend’s lover is extremely concerned about my friend’s… friend.” He changed “sister” to “friend” at the last second, fearing he was being too obvious.

“How concerned?” Yu Feiwen asked curiously.

“…” Yun Yingzhi thought about it, counting on his fingers. “That lover cares about what my friend ate for breakfast, what they like, who they hang out with daily. And if anything happens to that person, the lover is more concerned than even my friend themselves…”

Yun Yingzhi used all ten fingers to list the details of his time with Huai Boshe.

Yu Feiwen poured a glass of water and handed it to him. Yun Yingzhi took it and had a sip, which helped his dry throat. “My friend asked me if he’s overthinking it. It doesn’t feel like a coincidence—the lover is exceptionally focused on that person.” He was already so jealous!

Yu Feiwen took the cup back, placed it on the table, and said, “Your friend isn’t overthinking it.”

Yun Yingzhi frowned. So he really wasn’t? He hesitated before adding, “But… the lover was the one who confessed to him first!”

“Yingzhi, let me ask. Is the relationship between your ‘green-hatted’ friend and the friend the lover is obsessed with very good?” another roommate asked.

Yun Yingzhi’s eyelid twitched. He instinctively looked up at the ceiling, feeling as if everything was turning green. He thought: He and Yun Yingyao are siblings. Their relationship isn’t ‘good,’ but they share an unbreakable bond of blood.

After a moment of silence, he said, “It’s like… a relationship between biological brothers…”

Yu Feiwen patted Yun Yingzhi’s shoulder. “Tell your friend to break up with that lover.”

“If they don’t break up with someone whose heart belongs to someone else, are they waiting for graduation?” one roommate added.

The other said, “He’s already got a lush green grassland on his head.”

Yun Yingzhi instinctively looked up again, feeling like the green grassland had just expanded. “…”

Thinking about it, he couldn’t help but say, “But the lover confessed first, so the lover should… like him… right?” As he spoke, his voice grew less certain.

Yu Feiwen sat on Yun Yingzhi’s bed. One roommate said, “Yingzhi, you’re thinking too simply.”

Yun Yingzhi argued, “No, I just mean, if the lover didn’t like him, why confess?”

Yu Feiwen countered, “I suspect that lover confessed to your friend’s ‘friend’ before confessing to your friend.”

Yun Yingzhi was shocked. His expression was one of total disbelief as a giant question mark formed in his mind.

Huai Boshe… confessed to Yun Yingyao before confessing to me?

Translator’s Note: Welcome to the first chapter! The title “A Shimmering Green Atop the Head” (頭頂綠油油) refers to the Chinese idiom “wearing a green hat” (戴綠帽子), which means being cheated on or cuckolded. Poor Yingzhi is just starting to realize his “perfect” boyfriend might have some ulterior motives! Also, “School Flower” (校花) is a term usually used for the most beautiful girl in school, but Yingzhi is so pretty he took the title as a guy. Talk about a face that can conquer the stars!
