Chapter 77: The Demon King’s Acting Skills
Zebulun lowered the book in his hand slightly.
Misha could only see his eyes, but seeing his eyes was enough.
Zebulun’s expression was complicated.
Since Misha became the Demon King three years ago, he had never seen Zebulun show such an expression.
The Zebulun in his memory always seemed to avoid other monsters and stay alone, so much so that even most of his clansmen hadn’t seen his true face.
His personality was indifferent, his reactions slow, and he wasn’t good at fighting; Lance could catch him easily.
His eyes usually held a plain look, as if he cared about nothing. But now he was frowning tightly, as if recalling some unbearable past, showing even a bit of embarrassment and panic. Only after a long while did he speak somewhat nervously, “Please… please don’t let your imagination run wild.”
Misha: “…”
Good.
Misha felt he had guessed right.
Gilry’s dragon egg really had something to do with Zebulun.
But he couldn’t figure it out.
Gilry was a male dragon, and Zebulun was a male elf. Leaving aside whether there was reproductive isolation between elves and dragons, just based on gender, how on earth did they produce such a big dragon egg?!
Misha frowned, trying to guess again, “It wouldn’t be… the emotion you said you separated, right?”
Zebulun: “…”
Misha felt he guessed right again.
“Can that dragon egg hatch?” Misha scratched his head, feeling he sorely lacked knowledge about this strange ancient magic. “No, wait, Gilry has been hatching the egg, which means he thinks it can hatch?”
Zebulun: “…”
Misha: “In the Black Dragon clan, male dragons rarely hatch eggs, uh…”
He paused.
Right, from what he learned in the Demon King course, for Black Dragons, only female dragons hatched eggs. Male dragons generally wouldn’t show such behavior unless the female dragon was away on business, or…
Or there was no female dragon at all.
Misha’s eyes widened, looking at Zebulun in disbelief.
No way. This dragon egg had to do with Zebulun. Zebulun rejected the Dragon Clan extremely, avoided them, and didn’t even want to mention Gilry’s name, while Gilry thought it might be his dragon egg?
What on earth happened between them to lead to such a result!!!
Misha spoke with difficulty, “You two…”
Zebulun also spoke with difficulty: “It was an accident caused by ancient magic.”
Misha: “Then is it…”
Zebulun: “…”
A moment later, Zebulun nodded slowly.
Misha: “…”
Misha couldn’t believe his guess.
Of his four great demons, one abducted a human prince, and the other two got entangled in a messy relationship and produced a dragon egg.
Looking at it this way, only the Banshee sister Nova was the only normal demon among the four great demons.
Misha sighed deeply.
“…You guessed right,” Zebulun seemed to want to explain. “But that was just the emotion I separated.”
He thought about it. Since Misha had roughly guessed it anyway, instead of letting Misha let his imagination run wild and come up with strange conclusions, he might as well take the initiative and tell him the truth.
“Perhaps the Dragon Clan’s ancient magic was too weird, leading to such a strange result,” Zebulun sighed. “I’ve never figured out what happened. Why did the separated emotion take the shape of a dragon egg?”
Misha: “…”
What a magical ancient magic.
But if it was just simply using ancient magic, Misha felt Gilry wouldn’t care so much about this dragon egg.
He obviously misunderstood the identity of this dragon egg.
He felt he should be the father of this dragon egg.
Misha looked at Zebulun silently.
Misha: “You and Gilry…”
“…Using ancient magic you aren’t familiar with without authorization might lead to some irreversible consequences,” Zebulun whispered. “After separating my emotions, I seemed to fall into brief confusion.”
Misha: “…”
Zebulun clearly didn’t want to mention what happened after the emotional confusion. He skipped over it simply, adding a sentence at the end: “He… probably misunderstood.”
Misha: “…”
Misha took a few deep breaths, trying hard to explain all this in his heart.
Mm, isn’t it just an office romance between subordinates? No big deal.
At least it wasn’t like Ashby, almost causing a war between humans and monsters. It just made Gilry stay at home hatching an egg for a few years. It was just their private little fun; Misha didn’t need to pay attention to it.
Misha nodded with mixed feelings and said, “Don’t worry, I won’t try this ancient magic.”
This thing sounded way too unreliable! He didn’t want such a strange accident to happen to him!
And he clearly felt the side effects this magic brought to Zebulun.
After all, it separated a part of his emotions. Zebulun’s current indifference and slowness must be the consequences caused by that ancient magic.
Misha had nothing more to ask Zebulun.
He had learned many earth-shattering things in these past few days and desperately needed time to digest them.
Just as Arlo hadn’t returned yet, and Samuel had gone to find Arlo, he could borrow their room first and think properly—
Zebulun suddenly looked up behind him, revealing a slightly astonished look.
Misha: “…”
Looking at Zebulun’s expression, he had an inexplicably bad premonition.
Misha: “Zebulun…”
Zebulun: “…There seems to be someone there.”
Misha immediately turned around to look behind him.
Behind him was the empty forest in the middle of the night. The lights of the Elf Town were faintly visible in the distance. Besides that, a corner of a furry cloak was visible behind a tree not far away.
Misha: “…”
Hehe.
Isn’t that the Hero’s cloak?
Why is this person secretly following him again!
Misha took a deep breath, about to call the Hero out from behind the tree, but suddenly remembered—his conversation with Zebulun just now was really unsuitable for others to hear.
The Black Dragon egg part didn’t matter; it was just a private love story. Even if the other party involved was an Archdemon, it wasn’t a big problem.
The important thing was whether he had exposed his identity.
He carefully recalled his words with Zebulun. Zebulun hadn’t called him Demon King from beginning to end. Instead, he had called Zebulun’s name several times. But fortunately, the Hero seemed not to know who the Archdemons were, and Zebulun’s name had three characters. He felt… the Hero probably couldn’t remember it.
So Misha cleared his throat and called out cautiously, “Lord Lance?”
The furry cloak behind the tree shook. A moment later, Lance walked out from behind the tree. He didn’t show any guilt of tracking, eavesdropping, and being caught. He just smiled at Misha and Zebulun and said, “What a coincidence.”
Misha: “…You followed me.”
Lance blinked, noncommittal.
The Hero was always so open after doing bad things, making Misha unsure if he should be angry.
But at a time like this, anger wasn’t necessary. The important thing was that he should first figure out what the Hero had heard.
Misha asked nervously, “When did you come over?”
Lance smiled and blinked at him again: “I’ve been here the whole time.”
Misha: “…”
Damn it.
When leaving the Elf Town, Misha had carefully checked behind him to avoid anyone discovering his tracks and following him to see his conversation with Zebulun. But he hadn’t discovered the Hero… This was truly a major blunder.
Misha swallowed nervously and said, “Really a coincidence.”
After saying this, he immediately turned to look at Zebulun and hurriedly added, “You must have some business coming to the Elf Town.”
Zebulun: “…”
Lord Demon King’s excuse was too pale and weak; he couldn’t possibly believe it.
But Lance didn’t seem to find it strange, or rather, he didn’t intend to poke holes in Misha’s excuse.
Misha took a deep breath, just wanting to ask the Hero how much he had heard, when Lance looked curiously at Zebulun, still smiling, and asked, “So your name isn’t Ze.”
Zebulun: “…”
Misha: “…”
Oh no, is Zebulun’s identity about to be exposed?
“I should have known.” Lance sighed deeply. “This world wouldn’t have a name with just one easy-to-remember character.”
Zebulun: “…”
Misha: “…”
Hero! Is that supposed to be the main point?!
Lance walked a bit closer to them, stood beside Misha, and looked at the dark elf in front of him.
“Zebulun,” he whispered the name. “So that’s your name.”
Misha: “…”
The Hero who never remembered names actually remembered it this time?
Lance: “I seem to have heard this name somewhere.”
There was a smile on his lips, but no smile in his eyes. This gaze made Zebulun panic. He couldn’t help stepping back a bit, but then thought that in the cabin, the Hero could catch him easily. So even if he wanted to run now, it probably wouldn’t work.
Misha was also very nervous.
He thought, I can’t expose my identity. I should actively distance myself from Zebulun. After all, the Hero seems to have little hostility toward monsters, and the Hero still needs Zebulun to take him to the Dragon Clan. The Hero didn’t do anything to Ashby, so he probably won’t do anything to Zebulun, right?
Sorry, Zebulun.
I can only expose your identity for now.
Misha took a deep breath and cast an apologetic look at Zebulun.
If this hateful Hero tried to force Zebulun to sign some contract again, he would definitely find a way to stop the Hero!
Misha took a step back, put on the terrified expression he had studied for a long time—intended for when he was defeated by the Hero—and tried his best to make his acting look more realistic.
“Ah! Zebulun! That name!” Misha shouted nervously. “Isn’t that one of the Four Great Demons!”
Zebulun: “…”
Lance: “…”
Misha: “You are an Archdemon!”
Zebulun: “…”
Lance: “…”
After shouting this, Misha immediately turned nervously to look at Lance.
His gaze was too nervous, and he was so desperate to distance himself from the Archdemons…
“Wow.” Lance slowly turned his head, looked back at Zebulun, and read without emotion, “So you are an Archdemon.”
Zebulun: “…”
Lance: “…”
