Chapter 7: The Eavesdropping Plan part 1
“No matter what, I will not sign those two documents!”
“Simulations show that the TDAS system will cause irreversible damage to mecha pilots. I do not agree to its large-scale installation in active-duty mechas…”
“What? Mental power transplantation? Whose idea was this? Do you have any idea what doing this would mean!”
In a cramped, narrow conference room, over a dozen high-ranking officers sat across from Bai Mu. They were all influential figures in the Imperial military. Their faces were cold and stern, but the gazes they cast toward Bai Mu were collectively filled with mockery and disdain. The air was as frigid as ice, filled with an eerie hostility.
Bai Mu had already endured three rounds of such questioning. It was always about those same two issues, always the same questions, and his attitude remained just as firm.
“I advise you not to be so stubborn. This is a collective decision by the military; it will not change based on your individual will!” the leading official said in a firm tone.
The scene suddenly shifted. The oppressive conference room and the malicious faces collapsed and disintegrated. Bai Mu was frantically rowing a small boat, floating on a deep sea. A violent storm bore down on him, and his boat had already capsized. Salty seawater flooded his lungs as he struggled in the water, but he couldn’t stop his body from sinking!
Bai Mu sat up abruptly. His vision was filled with dazzling light spots. After a good while, he finally saw his surroundings clearly.
The dark wooden curtains were tightly closed, with thin slivers of light shining through the gaps. Beneath him was a comfortable bed and a soft blanket. This wasâ
The Consulâs bedroom.
Bai Mu was dazed for a moment before letting out a long sigh of relief, feeling like he had survived a catastrophe.
No questioning, no auction, no mercenary suddenly bursting in. He was safe for now, but those pains, torments, fears, and worries were like nails driven into his marrow, already fused with his bone and flesh, impossible to remove.
Bai Mu got out of bed, pulled back the curtains, and walked out of the bedroom. Han Naijin was nowhere to be seen. The blanket was neatly folded and placed at the edge of the sofa. He didn’t think further and went into the bathroom to wash up.
Several nutrient solutions were on the table. Bai Mu guessed they were left for him, so he picked them up and drank. The sense of satiety they brought was very apparent. He sat on the sofa and closed his eyes. As the soft light shone on him, he felt himself growing lazy.
He couldn’t remember how long it had been since he enjoyed such a peaceful morning.
As Bai Mu sat, the butler knocked, saying the new room was ready and asking him to take a look.
Bai Mu followed the butler downstairs to the first floor. The third room on the left side of the hall was his new room.
Once the butler entered the permissions for him, he left, telling Bai Mu to contact him if he needed anything. Bai Mu thanked him and entered the room.
This room was almost identical to the previous one in terms of decorationâsimple white tones, a clear guest room layout. The only difference was that this room had no alarm system or electromagnetic shielding. Bai Mu went to the window and looked out. The weather was fine, so he decided to go for a walk; at least he should familiarize himself with the manor.
The Han Manor was elegant and simple. The two main buildings both had white domes. The main building used for government affairs was at the front of the manor, built facing the street, with a high-ceilinged foyer and a grand entrance. Behind the building was a large lawn with garden benches.
The auxiliary building where they lived was at the back right of the manor, totaling three floors. Han Naijin occupied the entire second floor, while the first and third floors were for his staff. To get to the main building from the auxiliary one, one had to cross the entire manor.
Bai Mu went to the lawn and took a deep breath of fresh air, tilting his head to feel the breeze on his face. He hadn’t lived at such a slow pace for a long time. The tests, experiments, and maintenance at the mecha institute felt like a lifetime ago.
He looked at the bracelet on his wrist. This thing would surely limit his range of activity. He tried walking toward the center of the manor. After about a hundred steps, the bracelet began to emit a beep-beep sound. Bai Mu understood. His permitted activity range was likely a radius of less than fifty meters from the building where they lived. Once he exceeded the range, the alarm would sound, and the data would simultaneously be transmitted to the Consul.
Bai Mu looked at the government office building. It seemed he wouldn’t even be able to sneak in there to find clues.
Bai Mu didn’t go further, instead sitting on a nearby bench. He watched the birds catching bugs on the ground while he made his plans.
Last night, he had Xiao Piao search for information on the mecha base, but after a long search, it only found a few brief introductionsâno pictures or detailed descriptions. The mecha base was an important secret department of the military, so the information available to the public was very limited. With his range of activity restricted, gathering information would be even harder.
It seemed he could only wait for nowâwait for the Consul to lower his guard or for a suitable opportunity to arise. But when that opportunity would come remained a total mystery.
Bai Mu sat watching the birds for a while. Fearing that staying longer would attract attention, he returned to his room.
After over a month of fleeing, he seemed completely cut off from the outside world. So, he had Xiao Piao find some recent news from the various nations of the galaxy. This was his only way to gather external information now.
Xiao Piao projected the news interface, and the system pushed a breaking news item to the front page:
The King of Anga has been assassinated. Riots break out across the Kingdom of Anga. Can the new King be successfully crowned?
Bai Mu suddenly remembered: wasn’t King Anga the old lecher who had bid on him at Ponce Casino?
Bai Mu clicked on the news. He learned that after the old King died, the first-in-line successor was also assassinated the next day while attending a public event. Now, the one with legal succession rights was the second-in-line successor, Prince Plot. However, this prince didn’t seem to be popular with the people. Civil unrest had broken out in Anga; citizens held large-scale anti-government protests, and supporters of the first successor had directly walked out of parliament. The government was paralyzed, and riots continued in various places.
The change of a throne was always bloody and unpredictable, so this wasn’t surprising. Bai Mu didn’t pay much mind to this news; he was more interested in major events in the Empire.
However, in the remote asteroid belt, news from the Empire was scarce. Moreover, the Empire seemed very stable lately, with no major events occurring.
Days of having nothing to do but scroll through the news passed one after another. During this time, Bai Mu spent most of his time in his room, occasionally sitting on the garden bench. However, since that day, he hadn’t seen the Consul for several days. It seemed the Consul had been very busy.
Bai Muâs body had mostly recovered. The refrigerator was stocked with various nutrient solutions, and he tried each one. Although he was still far from a healthy state, he was no longer that weak.
On this day, Bai Mu woke up early as usual, washed up, drank a nutrient solution, and checked the news before sitting on the sofa to ponder.
In those days, although he had thought of many plans, he hadn’t found any way to enter the military mecha base without raising suspicion.
With the plan stalled, Bai Mu felt a bit anxious.
As he thought, he looked out the window. Sitting on the bench he often used was a young boy. Beside the boy was some kind of machine. Bai Mu recognized the boyâit was the one who had been with the Consul at the casino, asking how he knew the man was from Flying Eagle.
Bai Mu recalled the scene from the casino. The boy followed the Consul on patrol, so they must be close. Bai Mu felt he might be able to learn something about the Consul or the military from the boy. So, he walked out of the room, strolled around for a bit as usual, and then approached the bench.
