Chapter 68: Engagement Dissolved â Anger Can Be Deadly part 1
“…Think whatever you want.”
The man picked up his suit jacket from the booth.
“Tell your grandfather I have something to take care of and I’m leaving.”
“Alright,” Lu Xunye nodded in agreement. As the other turned to leave, he shouted, “Goodbye, Papa!”
The manâs foot slipped and he nearly fell. Lu Xunye burst out laughing.
In the back row, Old Mr. Wen scolded Wen Luoxi: “What do you look like, crying like that!”
Wen Luoxi tilted her face at a 45° angle, allowing the camera to capture the single tear she was suppressing in the corner of her eye on her beautiful face.
She sat up straight and pulled at the old manâs sleeve, acting the part of an infidelity victim who still deeply loved her scumbag man.
She sobbed: “Even though our Wen family has a large business and itâs impossible to endure this kind of humiliation, and Grandpa has loved me since I was a child and can’t bear for me to suffer.”
“But I don’t believe A-Yan would be this kind of person. He must have a reason. I beg you, don’t dissolve our engagement just to protect the Wen familyâs reputation.”
Lu Xunyeâs lip twitched. Is this really not too obvious?
Old Mr. Wen was about to speak but was interrupted again by Wen Luoxi.
Her tone carried a guilt that anyone could hear was a lie.
“A-Yan actually doesn’t have a bad temper like on the screen. That must be malicious editing!”
“That day, A-Yan… he only went there to discuss a partnership. It just happened to be in a hotel suite. This must be the assistantâs negligence. He even said as long as I was obedient, he would help my father.”
Old Mr. Wen pulled his hand away and growled: “Fool.”
“Ah!” Wen Luoxi let out a cry of pain and screwed up her face. The cameras focused on her. She secretly gave Lu Xunye a look.
Lu Xunye immediately used one hand to vault over the soft leather back of the booth from the first row, clearing the distance in two leaps.
Without hesitation, he pulled up her sleeve, revealing two blue-purple marks on her fair arm.
He let out a sharp (faked) gasp of horror. “Heavens! Second Aunt, who did this to you?”
On the stage, Lu Yan naturally realized something was wrong with the audio.
His gaze swept over the chaotic crowd below, locked onto his target, and he rushed down the steps in a few strides.
He walked through the aisle to the third row. Looking at the gentle beauty before him who was covered in tears and radiating fragility, a flash of malice crossed his eyes. Then he adopted an expression of deep affection and pity.
He reached out to pull the woman into his arms. “Luoxi, let me explain. This is all fake. Someone is intentionally destroying the feelings between us.”
Wen Luoxi gave him a timid look and allowed herself to be pulled into his embrace.
Lu Yan leaned close to her ear, his expression tender, but spoke only vicious threats: “You think this will bring me down? Iâm afraid in the end Iâll be unharmed while your fatherâs old life won’t be saved.”
Wen Luoxi struck back with equal force: “Then letâs see who really dies in the end.”
Lu Xunye stepped forward, grabbed Wen Luoxiâs shoulders with both hands, and pulled her out of the manâs arms, tossing her into Old Mr. Wenâs arms.
He spoke with righteous indignation, his eyes full of disapproval. “Second Uncle, even if Second Aunt isn’t planning to help you clarify, there’s no need to pinch her! People will think our Lu Group is so tyrannical! Besides, Second Aunt loves you so much, and yet you cheated! With more than one person?!”
Wen Luoxi immediately understood and pinched a bruise on the inside of her arm.
The camera flashed over to show that the previously clear skin truly had a pinch mark, matching exactly where Lu Yan had grabbed the womanâs arm earlier.
Everyone present cast unreadable looks toward Lu Yan. Some discussed it right in front of him: “Acting so lawless just because he’s a young master of the Lu family.”
A reporter immediately thrust a microphone forward: “Mr. Lu Yan, is what this gentleman said true? Did you really pinch Miss Wen to threaten her?”
“Please respond to the authenticity of the video. Did you really plot against your nephew for the inheritance? Did you really cheat?”
Lu Yan covered the camera lens with one hand and demanded sharply: “Which media outlet are you from? This is malicious slander. Lu Groupâs lawyers will preserve evidence and pursue legal responsibility.”
Faced with a tough opponent, the reporter turned the microphone to Wen Luoxi: “Miss Wen, did you quit the entertainment industry for a family marriage? How do you view your fiancĂŠâs cheating? Will the engagement between the Wen and Lu families be dissolved because of this?”
Wen Luoxi opened her mouth to speak, but Old Mr. Wen stopped her with a look and forcibly pulled her away. His cane thumped on the floor. “Regarding the engagement between the Wen and Lu families, please report accurately. My Wen familyâ”
Before the old man could finish, Lu Xunye grabbed the microphone from the reporterâs hand and pulled it to his face.
“Miss Wen is too heartbroken. Everyone, don’t make it difficult for her. As for whether the video is real, professionals will distinguish it frame by frame later.”
He raised his voice: “Everything started with the Lu family. We will give everyone and the Wen family a reasonable explanation later.”
The reporterâs view shifted, and he found his position had changed. He felt baffled by Lu Xunyeâs sudden action and words. He asked his colleague: “Who is he?”
Someone with a good memory remembered that Lu Xunye was the unlucky nephew who had been plotted against in the video earlier.
Such an explosive financial news highlight involving a struggle within a wealthy family, added to the recent news about the Lu Group heir being stranded on a desert island and brought back by the Chairman.
Even though the heir in that news only had a back view, it had gone viral in the media.
Now the person himself was standing right there. With such massive traffic before them, how could the media let it go?
The media swarmed forward, surrounding Lu Xunye. “What are your thoughts on your second uncle intentionally framing you and sucking up to a popular actress?”
“There were rumors recently that you were seen traveling intimately with a male lover on the island. Is this true?”
“Are you also suspected of cheating?”
Sharp questions nearly buried Lu Xunye.
He caught sight of Wen Luoxiâs look of indifference, even schadenfreude.
He immediately turned to Lu Yan. After a quick scan, his eyes lowered, and his whole being was shrouded in a faint layer of disbelief and disappointment.
Listening closely, his voice was choked with emotion.
“Perhaps that night was dark and windy and Second Uncle didn’t see clearly that it was me before he untied the rope. As for the private conversation between the popular actress and my second uncle, I am unaware of it. But Second Uncle truly did offer me a glass of red wine, though I later ate something bad and vomited the wine out.”
“Second Uncle.”
Lu Xunye called out to Lu Yan and sniffled.
“Iâm really sorry for failing your intentions. I know you intended to arrange a marriage for your nephew, but a forced melon isn’t sweet.”
He faced the camera again: “As for my own emotional life, no comment. Everyone, please do not take things out of context for traffic. Focus more on this robot developed by the team led by my second uncle.”
Lu Yanâs face looked more foul than if he had swallowed something disgusting. He glared murderously at Lu Xunye. He couldn’t even care that the media were still there; heâd just handle it later anyway.
The chaos was quickly suppressed.
The guests were dispersed, and the electronic boards that had been looping the video went black instantly. The livestream across all platforms came to an abrupt halt.
All relevant tags and discussions were banned from spreading.
Bang!
Lu Feng, with a dark face and a crowd of people, burst into the hall. He forcibly cleared all negative material related to the Lu Group recorded by the media and drove them out.
The shareholders, seeing the situation was wrong, also made excuses to leave. The massive venue now only held five people: the Wen family grandfather and granddaughter, Lu Xunye, Lu Yan, and Lu Feng.
Faced with the newcomer, Lu Yanâs lips trembled as he called out weakly: “Dad.”
Lu Feng was furious and slapped him across the face, roaring: “You bastard!”
Lu Xunye was shocked and even felt a phantom pain on his own face.
Lu Yan was slapped so hard he fell into a seat. He grit his teeth in anger, but when he tried to stand up, a glare from Lu Feng stopped him from lashing out.
“Don’t be angry,” Old Mr. Wen comforted him. “This is just nonsense among the younger generation. We elders shouldn’t take it to heart.”
Lu Feng looked at Wen Luoxi with pity in his eyes. “This dead boy has done a bunch of absurd things and made this girl suffer.”
Meeting the warning gaze of the Old Mr. Wen, Wen Luoxi shook her head rapidly. “Iâm not suffering. Having Uncle care for me has already made me very happy.”
“Good child, good child.” Lu Feng gave a kind smile and said seriously, “Don’t worry. This time, Uncle will definitely give you an explanation.”
Wen Luoxi didn’t dare slight this elder whom even her grandfather respected.
She admitted her methods this time were crude. A shrewd person like him likely guessed her trick at a glance, which was why he had pulled Lu Xunye, a Lu family member, into it.
But she hadn’t considered that this was originally an internal launch event. Who knew Lu Yan would be so eager to prove his worth and make a name for himself that heâd change it to a livestream last minute?
If this caused irreparable damage to the Lu familyâs reputation, she truly was a little bit responsible.
But whatever. If the Lu family retaliated, it would be against the Wen family. What did it have to do with her, a granddaughter who wasn’t favored?
The Wen family never treated her or her parents as part of the family. Old Mr. Wen favored his second son and even the daughter of the second sonâs family had been pampered since childhood.
At first, the marriage with the Lu family wouldn’t have fallen to her, but her cousin wasn’t willing.
The little girl cried, and the whole family was heartbroken. After a discussion, they decided to sacrifice Wen Luoxiâs marriage without even considering Lu Yanâs character.
The benefits brought by the Lu family hadn’t been shared with her at all. Any resistance would be labeled as filial impiety.
So Wen Luoxi couldn’t wait for the Wen family to offend the Lu family. Since she dared to do this, she was prepared to break with the Wen family.
