Chapter 79: Having a Brain
Zhan Ye stood up from his chair instantly, his eyes sweeping across the area with sharp intensity.
“Detect the number of pollutants as quickly as possible!”
Zhan Ye walked to Su Tang’s side and released the Golden Eagle from his sea of consciousness.
“The scanning results show significant energy fluctuations at the perimeter. Based on the returned data, there are at least… fifty of them!”
Fifty?
Where did so many high-level pollutants come from?
“Captain Zhan, they are slamming into the light membrane! The barrier won’t hold for much longer!”
Almost the moment the Sentinel finished speaking, one of the barrier generators collapsed.
Boom—!
Su Tang held Xiao Yu tightly. The pale blue light membrane flickered violently, and then spiderweb-like cracks instantly spread across the barrier.
Zhan Ye immediately shielded Su Tang behind him.
“This is a fucking trap, for sure.”
“Send a signal to Mo Xiao and the Third Squad! Tell them to stop what they’re doing and return to reinforce us immediately!”
With such a major development here, whatever was happening on their end was still an unknown. However, one thing was certain: the situation they encountered would definitely be as grim as this.
“Activate the backup defense systems! Open every single defense system we have! Release your spiritual entities and hold them off for me!”
“Yes, sir!”
Zhan Ye ordered the three Sentinels to activate the defense systems. Then, he manipulated the Golden Eagle to charge out through the cracks. The Golden Eagle’s cry and the howls of the external pollutants resonated instantly.
The laser cannons installed by the First Squad around the camp turned their barrels and began firing at the circles of pollutants surrounding the fragile light membrane.
“Are you scared?”
Zhan Ye looked down and asked in a low voice.
A single one of these high-level pollutants was enough to terrify a low-level Sentinel, let alone a mass attack of this scale.
Su Tang held Xiao Yu tightly and shook her head.
“I’m not scared.”
“Good girl.”
Zhan Ye chuckled lowly and suddenly reached out to ruffle her hair. His movement was a bit stiff. If Su Tang had looked up carefully at that moment, she would have noticed that his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes.
“These things won’t last long. If Mo Xiao and the others haven’t returned by the time we run out of backup resources…”
“Then follow me and run.”
Dreadful shrieks of pollutants came from outside the fragile light membrane. Under the continuous impact, the barrier made a strained cracking sound. Strands of black pollution continuously surged in through the gaps. The three Sentinels had already put on their masks.
Xiao Yu began to struggle in Su Tang’s arms, the collar around its neck exploding with a blinding white light.
“You want to help? No! Ya Suo isn’t by your side; the spirit power in the collar definitely won’t support you if you enlarge your body!”
Su Tang held Xiao Yu down firmly until the little guy stopped struggling.
Su Tang watched the waves of pollutants surging forward. The golden feathers of the eagle were already splattered with red blood, and the annoying black pollution aura surrounded it, never giving up on the idea of corrupting it.
Su Tang lowered her eyes. Given the pollutants’ relentless and continuous attacks, they wouldn’t last long.
She pressed her lips together and mobilized the spirit power in her body. Closing her eyes, scenes detected by her spirit threads instantly appeared before her.
The energy fluctuations of each pollutant were different. Su Tang skipped over the smaller ones and directly found the one with the most obvious spirit power fluctuation.
“That one-eyed pollutant in the northwest—it seems to be commanding the others!”
Su Tang relayed the information to Zhan Ye. Zhan Ye opened his mouth, wanting to stop Su Tang from continuing to project her spirit power, but he was silenced by the woman slapping him directly on the shoulder.
“What are you hesitating for? Don’t you know you have to catch the king to catch the bandits? Hurry up and deal with that fellow! Do you want us to be trampled into meat pies by those things that break in?”
Zhan Ye snapped back to his senses instantly. Indeed, with the enemy at the gate, he couldn’t afford to think too much. He grabbed a nearby laser cannon and switched it to manual mode. The next second, intense fire swept across the surroundings indiscriminately.
“Golden Eagle, take that fellow out first!”
The Golden Eagle dived down, its sharp claws striking at the eye of the one-eyed pollutant. Just as it was about to succeed, two pollutants leaped out from nowhere to block the eagle’s attack.
“Damn it, they even know how to use meat shields!”
Zhan Ye frowned, feeling a jolt of alarm at the intelligence level of these creatures in the Abyss.
Seeing the Golden Eagle fail several times as it tried to attack from different directions, Su Tang pushed her spirit power again. Remembering Anse’s warning that her spirit power would be particularly attractive to pollutants during this period, and fearing her power would cause a riot among the pollutants outside, Su Tang deliberately slowed the amount of her spirit power. She only projected a single, faint thread, tentatively approaching the one-eyed pollutant.
As soon as the weak spirit thread neared the creature, the fellow sluggishly poked its head out. After a two-second pause, it charged toward the spirit thread at an incredible speed until it made contact.
The moment it touched that slimy, disgusting body, Su Tang frowned. She tried to pull her spirit thread back, but to her surprise, it was as if it were stuck to something; it was glued to the creature’s skin and couldn’t be pulled away. She could even feel her spirit thread being dragged away from her.
It was as if it were being… devoured?
Su Tang cut off that strand of spirit power, and the one-eyed pollutant eagerly swallowed the severed thread. Su Tang shouted, “Now! Hurry!”
Zhan Ye pulled the trigger in response. The energy beam accurately hit the target, striking the one-eyed pollutant’s eye. The Golden Eagle seized the opportunity, its sharp claws piercing through the back of the creature’s neck. The pollutant let out a pained wail and then collapsed completely.
“Roar—!”
With that howl, the pressure against the light membrane instantly lightened. The pollutants at the perimeter paused, and their movements even became somewhat chaotic.
“Take the chance! Use all the backup energy now! Use every weapon in the camp! Give them everything we’ve got!”
“Release your spiritual entities! Pay attention to attacking the back of their necks!”
“Yes!”
Su Tang was right—that fellow was the “brain” behind the entire attack. With the brain severed, the pollutants’ movements became uncoordinated. The four laser cannons in the camp fired indiscriminately into the surroundings, while the Golden Eagle and the other three spiritual entities launched fierce attacks.
Soon, signs of the pollutants scattering and fleeing appeared. Once one started, others followed. Watching the majority of the pollutants scatter, Zhan Ye waved his hand to signal the cessation of fire.
