The Binding of Pheromones Chapter 46

Chapter 46: Forty-fifth Chapter: Miracle in the Operating Room

“Sister Shasha,” Gu Yunsheng said, noticing the bodyguards were quite embarrassed. He stepped in to mediate. “How about you go handle your business first? After the surgery, Douding will need to stay for observation. Once he’s stable, I’ll notify you to pick him up. Does that work?”

Zhou Shasha wanted to say more, but she remembered she had an important dinner later. Moreover, Gu Yunsheng spoke so gently it was hard to refuse. She nodded and said, “Fine. I’ll leave Douding to you. Take good care of him. If he loses a single hair, I’ll hold you accountable!” With that, she left with her bodyguards, her hips swaying as her heels clicked away.

Once she was gone, Lu Jingheng immediately leaned in, his tone sour. “Say, Old Gu, who is that beauty? She’s so friendly with you; she doesn’t have a crush on you, does she?”

Gu Yunsheng rolled his eyes and gave a helpless sigh. “Ugh, don’t mention it. Just a spoiled heiress who makes a mountain out of a molehill. But…” He lowered his voice. “She’s quite generous; she paid a lot for the surgery fee.”

“Right, come over to my place for dinner tonight? My mom made your favorite sweet and sour pork ribs today.” Lu Jingheng quickly changed the subject, hoping to spend some normal time with Gu Yunsheng.

“Really? Your mom’s ribs are top-tier!” Gu Yunsheng’s eyes lit up, but then he looked conflicted. “But… my mom is back in the country. I upset her the day I was discharged, so I need to go back and coax her.”

“True, she finally came back, you should spend time with her.” Lu Jingheng nodded in understanding. “Should I drop you off later?”

“Sure, thanks, Young Master Lu,” Gu Yunsheng replied with a smile.

The two passed through the waiting area and arrived at the second floor at a room marked “Operating Room.”

As they passed the crowded waiting area, the scent of disinfectant filled the air. They reached the end of the second-floor corridor.

Gu Yunsheng walked quickly to the door and spotted Xiao Li, who had just come out. She held a tray with scalpels, hemostats, and other tools.

“Xiao Li, how is Douding? Did the surgery go well?” Gu Yunsheng asked, his tone laced with anxiety and worry.

Xiao Li set the tray on a nearby table. Hearing his voice, she turned around, her face showing the relief and comfort of a successful surgery. She smiled and said, “Dr. Gu, don’t worry. Douding’s surgery went very well. His vital signs are stable. The anesthesia hasn’t worn off yet, so he should still be sleeping.”

“That’s good, that’s good.” Gu Yunsheng’s heart finally settled. He patted his chest and said gratefully, “Hard work, Xiao Li.”

“It’s what I should do, Dr. Gu. I’ll get back to work then.” With that, Xiao Li turned and left.

“Come on, let’s go in and check on Douding,” Gu Yunsheng said to Lu Jingheng, then took the lead in pushing the door open.

Just as they were walking toward Douding’s cage, the quiet of the operating room corridor was shattered by a shrill howl. Inside the cage, Douding was struggling in pain, his limbs twitching violently as he let out heartbreaking whimpers.

The previously clean white gauze was now soaked red with blood. Bright red blood dripped through the gaps in the cage onto the floor—a shocking sight.

“Douding!” Gu Yunsheng’s face turned pale at the scream. His heart sank, and without a thought, he rushed to the cage.

With maximum speed, he donned medical gloves, opened the medical kit, and pulled out an anesthetic and a syringe. He prepared to give Douding a shot to alleviate the pain and facilitate emergency treatment.

Because of the pain, Douding struggled even more fiercely, but Gu Yunsheng’s eyes remained steady. With a swift, accurate movement, he injected the anesthetic into Douding’s body.

The wound had ruptured severely. The previously stitched incision looked like a gruesome mouth, revealing the bright red muscle tissue within. Gu Yunsheng’s brow furrowed tightly at the sight.

“Go get Dr. Xiao!” While preparing the surgical tools, Gu Yunsheng shouted at Lu Jingheng behind him.

Startled by the sudden turn of events, Lu Jingheng was snapped awake by Gu Yunsheng’s anxious shout and immediately ran to find Dr. Xiao.

“Dr. Xiao! Dr. Xiao! Come quickly! Douding isn’t going to make it!” Lu Jingheng’s voice echoed through the empty corridor, carrying a panic that made one’s heart skip a beat.

Dr. Xiao, who had just come out of the restroom, was washing his hands. Hearing someone call him, he stopped and looked toward the sound.

Seeing it was Lu Jingheng, he quickly turned off the faucet and grabbed a clean towel from the rack.

Wiping his hands, Dr. Xiao hurried toward Lu Jingheng and asked anxiously, “What’s wrong? What happened?”

Seeing Dr. Xiao at the restroom door, Lu Jingheng grabbed him. “Quick, come see Douding. His wound ruptured. Gu Yunsheng is handling it, but you need to go!”

Dr. Xiao was startled by Lu Jingheng’s sudden pulling and almost lost his footing. Seeing the panic on Lu Jingheng’s face, he frowned. “What is it? Slow down, what happened?”

“Douding… Douding… wasn’t the surgery done? But I don’t know what happened, suddenly…” Lu Jingheng was out of breath from running. He tried to explain in one go but didn’t know where to start.

“What about Douding? Speak clearly!” Seeing Lu Jingheng’s incoherent panic, Dr. Xiao grew tense as well.

“Douding, his wound… it burst open! Dr. Gu is inside dealing with it, go quickly!” Lu Jingheng finally got the words out. While speaking, he pulled Dr. Xiao toward the operating room.

Dr. Xiao didn’t delay further. He let Lu Jingheng pull him along, asking as they walked, “How could that happen? Wasn’t the surgery finished? Why would it burst open suddenly?”

“I don’t know! When I went in, I saw Douding struggling in the cage. The gauze was covered in blood, it was terrifying!” Remembering the scene, Lu Jingheng felt a wave of fear, his voice trembling.

Hearing the description, Dr. Xiao’s heart sank. A bad premonition rose as he quickened his pace, taking the steps to the operating room three at a time.

Upon entering, Dr. Xiao smelled a heavy scent of blood. He strode to the table and saw Gu Yunsheng with his head bowed, fully focused on treating Douding’s wound.

The wound had indeed ruptured, and it was worse than imagined. The bright red muscle tissue was flared out—a shocking sight.

Gu Yunsheng’s forehead was covered in beads of sweat, but his movements weren’t panicked at all. He remained calm and collected as he treated the injury.

“I’ll help.” Seeing this, Dr. Xiao walked to Gu Yunsheng’s side and spoke softly.

“Mm.” Gu Yunsheng didn’t look up, only giving a light response as he continued his work.

Dr. Xiao was the lead surgeon at this pet hospital—experienced and skilled. With him there, Gu Yunsheng breathed a sigh of relief. He focused on treating the wound while Dr. Xiao assisted—handing over tools, stopping the bleeding, and suturing. They worked together with perfect chemistry.

Lu Jingheng stood by, watching their busy silhouettes. His heart was in his throat, and he didn’t even dare breathe too loudly for fear of disturbing them.

“Whimper… whimper…” The anesthesia hadn’t fully taken effect yet; Douding struggled weakly, letting out faint whimpers that made Lu Jingheng’s heart ache.

Time passed second by second. The atmosphere in the room was tense and suffocating, as if the very air had solidified.

“Done.” After an unknown amount of time, Gu Yunsheng let out a long breath. His tense nerves finally relaxed. He felt a slight dizziness and slowly straightened his back while leaning against the table. Removing his mask and gloves, he said softly to Dr. Xiao, “Douding is okay now.”

Dr. Xiao made a final check of the sutures. His tight brow finally smoothed out as he felt a sense of peace. He knew that as long as Gu Yunsheng was there, the impossible could become possible. Even in such a critical situation, Gu Yunsheng could create miracles.

He remembered clearly that a half-year ago, on a freezing winter night, how Gu Yunsheng had braved the biting wind in the middle of the night to save an abandoned Scottish Fold cat with a broken hind leg.

“Dr. Gu, it’s a good thing you were here today. Otherwise, with Douding’s condition, even a god couldn’t have saved him if he were two minutes later.” Dr. Xiao removed his mask and blood-stained gloves, quickly following Gu Yunsheng as they walked out of the operating room.

“Yeah, yeah! You two are truly the indispensable guardian gods of little animals!” Lu Jingheng’s heart finally settled. His tense face showed a look of relief as he looked gratefully at Gu Yunsheng and Dr. Xiao. “Thank you so much. If not for you, Douding…”

Before Lu Jingheng could finish, he heard the rapid clack-clack-clack of steps from the stairs. His heart jumped as he instinctively looked toward the stairs. He saw Zhou Shasha had returned; she was running up the stairs looking frantic. As she ran, she shouted anxiously, “How is Douding? How is Douding?”

She ran all the way to the second floor. Seeing Lu Jingheng standing by the operating room, she grabbed his arm and asked urgently, “How is Douding? Is the surgery done? What’s his condition?!”
