Chapter 98: Senior is Back part 1
“Little Xie, it isn’t that I don’t want to help you, but the situation is complicated. The rocket has only just launched; there’s no logic in bringing it back immediately.”
Zhou Xie lowered his voice. “I understand your difficulties, but Leon is the person most likely to bring about technological advancement. Losing him would be a loss for the Federation.”
“If he is that important, the leadership won’t ignore him. Your father’s funeral arrangements need to be made, don’t they? You should focus on your father’s affairs first; don’t worry about the government’s arrangements.”
Zhou Xie stood silent in the night for a few seconds. Just as he was preparing to leave to visit the next official, his phone suddenly rang.
Shi Ye: [Wang Sichen was struck by a flower pot falling from the fourth floor. 90% probability of death.]
He lowered the phone and looked coldly at the man opposite him.
The man, unnerved by the sudden shift in Zhou Xie’s gaze, feigned a look of concern. “Little Xie, did you drive yourself here? It’s not safe for you to be driving in this state. Let me have a car send you back.”
Zhou Xie: “…”
One, two, three.
Buzz—
The man’s phone rang.
Zhou Xie spoke slowly, “Read your message first. We can talk after.”
Father was right; Wen Rong really was a natural-born leader. Everyone was marching to his beat once again.
At this critical juncture, removing the firewood from under the cauldron—cutting off the problem at the source—seemed impossible.
But Wen Rong had done it.
In the interrogation room of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the four gray walls seemed to absorb all light. The faint glow of the overhead lamp illuminated Wen Rong’s face.
Sitting across from him were two investigators in uniform.
Perhaps it was because Wen Rong looked too well-behaved, or perhaps his public image was simply too good. Or maybe, it was just impossible to find any explanation other than a freak accident for Wang Sichen being hit by his own flower pot. Whatever the reason, the two investigators’ attitude toward Wen Rong was excellent. To help him relax, they had even filched a bottle of expensive liquid coffee from their superior’s office.
“Drink some, it’ll make you feel better,” one said.
The other added, “Young man, tell us, what were you doing there with Senator Wang Sichen?”
Wen Rong was also injured. The wound on his forehead had been temporarily treated and covered with gauze, but the bleeding hadn’t completely stopped. In the half-hour he had been sitting there, red had begun to seep through the white fabric.
He looked at the two investigators earnestly. “The situation is a bit complicated. May I start from the beginning?”
“Of course, of course. Take your time.”
“Yesterday, I went to the airport intending to return to school. While in the waiting area, I received an invitation from President Zhou’s secretary to meet with the President.”
“President Zhou asked if I wanted to find my parents. I was very grateful to him at the time, and I rather impolitely asked if he could also provide aid to the welfare home where I grew up.”
“Then, the shooting incident at the airport entrance occurred.”
“President Zhou was afraid I would be in danger, and since he happened to be going to the same place, he invited me to take his private jet.”
“I believe you are clearer than I am about what happened later on the jet bridge.”
“President Zhou died. There was no one left to help me find my parents, and no one to aid the welfare home. after thinking it over seriously, I went to the Politburo, hoping someone there could help me.”
“Zhou Xie gave me some advice and told me to look for Mr. Liu Zhaohai, who was responsible for civil affairs under President Zhou. I was lucky enough to see him when I arrived at the Politburo, but he said he was currently very busy with work and had no time to attend to my matters.”
“That was when Senator Wang Sichen appeared.”
“He approached me on his own initiative. He said he would help me find my parents and aid the welfare home, but the requirement was that I had to attend the banquet he was hosting tonight.”
“His eyes were very ambiguous… they made me a little afraid.”
“So, tonight, I brought Shi Ye along with me. To avoid having too much contact with Senator Wang Sichen, I deliberately damaged his nephew’s car, and I deliberately dragged Shi Ye to places with few people… but Senator Wang Sichen still managed to send Shi Ye away.”
“In the alley, he said he could help me, but the condition was that I had to become his lover.”
The two investigators wore expressions of shocked gossip-mongers.
Wen Rong explained, “I actually… prefer to build a family with a gentle girl, and maybe have a pair of children. I don’t have parents, so I really long for a complete home.”
The investigators nodded, “Mhm, mhm,” fully understanding Wen Rong’s perspective.
“To reject Senator Wang Sichen, I made a lot of strange demands. For example, I said I wanted to be the Student Council President.”
“Senator Wang Sichen actually agreed.”
The investigators nodded again. When coaxing a beauty, men would promise to pluck the stars from the sky, let alone Senator Wang Sichen—an iron tree blooming, an old house on fire—experiencing first love…
“He terrified me.”
“Tsk, tsk.” The investigators shook their heads, lamenting Senator Wang Sichen’s failure.
“How could I possibly be the Student Council President? I don’t know the first thing about managing a school. Besides, I study mathematics. Teacher Xu Qiu even arranged for me to intern at her research base in the third semester.”
“At that moment, I felt like I couldn’t escape. Senator Wang Sichen was determined to plot against me.”
“Right, right.”
Having consumed this satisfying melon of gossip, the two investigators were both shocked and unsurprised.
Shocked because Senator Wang Sichen had been single for forty years, only to make a move on an eighteen-year-old boy.
Unsurprised because this boy was Wen Rong. Sitting face-to-face with him, it was hard not to be drawn in by his face. He was indeed beautiful, and very well-behaved.
“So I didn’t dare listen to him anymore. I turned around and tried to run. But before I could even start, my forehead was suddenly hit by something. It hurt terribly.” Wen Rong pointed to his forehead.
Investigator: “Aside from that, was there any other movement at the time?”
“No. I just heard a bang-bang-bang sound. When I looked back, Senator Wang Sichen had collapsed in a pool of blood.”
“If you hadn’t told me a flower pot fell from upstairs, I wouldn’t have known what happened.”
“Because it was very dark in the alley, I couldn’t see anything clearly.”
—Lin Jinghang couldn’t see clearly either.
Four hours ago.
The sun stung his eyes. Wen Rong stood at the entrance of the Politburo parking lot, staring stubbornly for a while until tears welled up in the corners of his eyes.
【Host, is this really okay? You’ve been waiting here for twenty minutes. If you wait any longer, you’ll get heatstroke.】
“En.”
【Why don’t you just go up and find Wang Sichen?】
“No.”
【Why? He likes you very much; he will definitely see you.】
“I have a good relationship with Shi Ye and the others. If I go to him at this sensitive time, he will definitely suspect that Zhou Xie sent me.”
【He’ll be suspicious even if you stand here.】
“That is why I am eliminating his doubts.”
“When I was a child solving math problems, whenever I got a different answer from others, I only believed that I was right, because I calculated it step by step.”
“People always believe in the things they deduce themselves, even if they are wrong.”
“I need Wang Sichen to deduce that I really didn’t come to find him.”
To make Wang Sichen think he wasn’t there for him, he had to first choose a specific target. This target had to be related to President Zhou, but also someone who was afraid of getting burned and would definitely reject him.
The excuse would be… President Zhou had promised yesterday to aid the welfare home.
A sense of normalcy is most needed when doing bad things.
Wen Rong felt that both the act of waiting in the parking lot and the objective concerning the welfare home were completely consistent with his usual logic.
Of course, this plan didn’t rely entirely on him. He watched the news often and knew what the high-ranking leaders of the Federation looked like, but he didn’t know what kind of people they were in private. To determine the target…
Zhou Xie had replied to him via Black Pigeon: [Liu Zhaohai.]
He needed Zhou Xie to choose for him.
Meeting Wang Sichen at the same time as meeting Liu Zhaohai.
Zhou Xie: [The Politburo is holding a meeting this afternoon. Everyone will be present.]
Zhou Xie also chose the time.
The plan went smoothly. Liu Zhaohai rejected him, and Wang Sichen, passing by, stopped.
The best hunters often appear in the guise of prey. adhering to this principle, Wen Rong disguised himself as someone suspicious and afraid of Wang Sichen. He didn’t speak to Wang Sichen, and when Wang Sichen looked over, he even turned his head, wanting to leave.
Only, Wen Rong couldn’t calculate everything perfectly yet; Wang Sichen didn’t seem to intend to call out to him.
Just at that moment, a car horn blared—Beep— sounding very much like the explosion on the jet bridge.
Wen Rong seized the opportunity to cover his ears and squat down, revealing the same terrified appearance he had shown in the lounge yesterday. His eyes, stung by the sun, served their purpose well—red to the point of purple, staring around through a veil of tears.
Until a hand was about to land on his head.
Wen Rong knew it was Wang Sichen’s hand. He pretended to be timid and dodged, not letting him touch.
—Absolutely could not let him touch.
“What do you need Liu Zhaohai for?” Wang Sichen wore an elegant smile, his gaze deep.
“H-hello. I was just looking for Mr. Liu to ask about some policies. Did I disturb you? I’ll leave right now.”
“Are you afraid of me?”
