Chapter 15: Hero — It’s So Similar He Has a Hallucination of a Ghost from the Past Returning
“Since the Captain didn’t explicitly say he wants to recruit juice, I think this matter needs further consideration. His character pool doesn’t seem to fit SG,” Onemo said directly after hearing the manager’s guess, his disapproval of juice practically written on his face.
He had no selfish motives; he was merely considering the team’s future. He was getting older, and his professional career was already on a countdown.
Swen said the team lacked the ability to push for the upper limit and wanted to recruit an OB player; he agreed with that. The OB position was often listed separately because of its unique mechanics, and after that, the Support position usually referred to Soft Supports.
Therefore, even though he was a Support, he didn’t know how to play OB.
During the livestream’s half-time break, the commentators were busy entertaining the audience. Kim was also bored, resting his chin on one hand as he listened to Onemo and the manager argue, interjecting at the right time: “juice started out playing OB, though. He just suddenly switched positions this time, and no one knows why.”
Bleach pursed his lips, “We can wait and see if the official release includes the team’s voice comms later. I suspect he might be the team’s shotcaller.”
If he had to shotcall, he naturally couldn’t let his hands fly for high-level mechanics; otherwise, there was no reason for juice to abandon the OB position he excelled at to play Soft Support.
“That’s all just your speculation,” Onemo felt that the few of them were all speaking in favor of juice and simply couldn’t listen to reason.
The BO3 started, and the opponent preemptively banned Gongchengshi, further confirming Mu Jiu’s suspicion—the opponent had indeed researched everyone on their team.
However, this ban slot was somewhat baffling to some pure tournament fans who didn’t follow the forums.
[Does Shaonian Xianfeng Dui even have a Gongchengshi for you to ban? What a waste of a ban slot.]
[You can’t just strip someone of their Gongchengshi status just because juice didn’t pick him.]
[juice, step up! Pick OB, pick OB, pick OB!]
Glancing at the opponent’s ban slot, a teammate said: “Mu Jiu, you take Wunv.”
“The three of us will try our best to help you share the pressure of shotcalling.” Having played for so long, they weren’t entirely without synergy.
They wanted to end the match and didn’t want to drag it to a tiebreaker.
Compared to losing slowly and painfully, they would rather gamble on a four-out. Even if it didn’t work, at least it would be a quick and decisive end.
Mu Jiu looked up at his three teammates. Their eyes were filled with trust in him. The words of refusal were on the tip of his tongue, but after struggling for a moment, he nodded.
The moment he nodded, his teammate helped him snatch the last position: “Wunv.”
On the livestream interface, the commentator observed the lineup and evaluated: “This wave of selection is very bold. It’s a very aggressive lineup. It seems Shaonian Xianfeng Dui trusts their OB very much.”
The other commentator didn’t quite agree, “There are clearly more stable choices. This risk and reward don’t seem proportional.” After all, Wunv was a character with a high ceiling and an even lower floor.
If played well, she was a god; if played poorly, she was trash.
“Then let us look forward to juice’s Wunv.”
When Demo saw juice lock in Wunv on the screen, his eyes lit up. After checking around to make sure no one noticed him, he felt relieved enough to continue watching.
Kim was right; this person’s mechanics were indeed very similar to Nine’s. So similar that he had an illusion of a ghost from the past returning to life.
Similar, the more he looked, the more similar it felt.
Demo hadn’t watched the previous rounds this seriously, looking as if he wanted to glue his eyes to the screen.
“What do you say? Pretty good, right?”
He was watching so intently that it was hard for others not to notice. Kim walked over and gave his shoulder a heavy pat, leaning into him.
Demo ducked out from under his shoulder, avoiding him.
Stubbornly, he said, “Just so-so.” It just had a bit of Nine’s flair, that’s all.
Leaving aside Nine’s character, no one could deny Nine’s mechanics. Unfortunately, his character couldn’t be ignored.
Halfway through the match, the commentator’s voice on the screen sounded pessimistic: “It’s still not enough. Xuezhe took the first hit very quickly. If the Rescuer is suppressed, rescuing people in the late game will also be a problem. Wunv won’t be able to protect them, and things will completely collapse later.”
Before entering a match, humans could choose to carry different skills. The Rescuer would usually prioritize carrying assistance skills to increase rescue speed. After rescuing a teammate from the Dissociation Table, they would gain a period of invincibility, which could help them tank a hit for their teammate and allow them to transition and rotate away.
Generally, a Boss wouldn’t target the Rescuer at the start because the Rescuer’s items were strong and hard to catch. But Camp-style Bosses were different. Catching the Rescuer first meant there might be no one else on the field who could rescue this person, or even if they rescued the teammate with a dropped status, they wouldn’t survive, directly securing a second wave of momentum.
“Xuezhe has already gone down in the large open space. Wunv is here!”
In the line of sight, Wunv, dressed in a purple dress, stood not far away charging her skill. Because there was an OB nearby, Xuenv didn’t quite dare to drag the person.
A human who was rescued while being dragged would immediately recover to half health, and it wouldn’t count toward the number of times they had been hooked.
“Xuenv chose to deal with Wunv. That is indeed a stable choice.”
“I actually feel it’s unnecessary. Switching to deal with Wunv wastes too much time. It’s better to just play mind games and dodge the stakes.”
Xuenv pursued Wunv for a distance and found that Wunv wasn’t giving her any openings. Unable to deal with her in a short time, she decisively turned back.
“Golden Body?!” the two commentators cried out in surprise simultaneously.
The moment the black and white stakes hit, golden light erupted from the Boss, negating all crowd control effects. This was a skill the Boss could choose to carry before the match started.
However, in this wave, the Boss had switched from Blink to Golden Body. There was only one chance per match to switch skills. Switching to Golden Body now meant there would be no chance to switch to Teleport later; she hadn’t left herself any room to maneuver.
After their surprise, the commentators recalled the situation and nodded again, “But to be honest, this wave of Golden Body switch was worth it.”
Xuenv was clearly very confident that Wunv’s stakes would definitely control her. The moment she dragged Xuezhe, she directly predicted and released Golden Body. As it turned out, Wunv indeed didn’t let her trust down.
