Chapter 59: Successful Departure
Wen Yuhuai stared blankly at the person appearing before his eyes. For a moment, he thought he was dreaming. Why was Gu Yanxiu here?
“You…”
Gu Yanxiu stepped forward and pulled him tightly into his arms. “Don’t be afraid anymore. I’ve come to save you.”
Wen Yuhuai was still in disbelief. He pushed him away and took two steps back to create some distance. “Wait, why are you here?”
Could these two have teamed up?
Gu Yanxiu’s eyes darkened slightly. He didn’t step forward again, instead standing quietly in place. “I haven’t been able to get through to your phone these past few days, and you haven’t replied to my messages. I heard you went to Shencheng, but when I called Uncle Wen, he said you never left. I knew something had happened to you again.”
“I just didn’t expect that Xingjian would actually lock you up here.”
Wen Yuhuai’s brain was a mess. “How did you know he locked me up here?”
Gu Yanxiu had known from the very beginning.
Back when Wen Yuhuai hadn’t yet left the capital, they had said they would each rely on their own abilities; whoever caught him, he belonged to.
On the day Wen Yuhuai left, Fu Xingjian had, as expected, made his move. Gu Yanxiu had remained idle, because he knew that even if he caught the person then, it would only provoke resistance and rebellion. In the end, it would just be a mutual loss.
It was better to let Fu Xingjian take him first. When the time was right, he would descend from the sky like a god to rescue him. In an instant, he would transform from a perpetrator into a savior.
The weight of the two men in Wen Yuhuai’s heart would naturally be different.
“Xingjian is very cautious. I only discovered the clues after sending people to follow him for many days. Right now, he’s being tied down by my men. We can only delay him for two hours at most. A-Yu, we don’t have much time.”
Wen Yuhuai looked up at Gu Yanxiu. The worry and urgency on his face didn’t seem fake. He probably wouldn’t team up with Fu Xingjian to play him.
Besides, he had already fallen to this point. Even if he didn’t trust him, what else could he do? Leaving with him was his only current path to regaining freedom.
“If I go with you, will you send me to Shencheng?”
It wasn’t safe to be around anyone right now. Staying with his family would feel more secure.
A look of difficulty appeared on Gu Yanxiu’s face. “A-Yu, Xingjian’s vigilance is very high. He should have realized something is wrong by now. He’s only trapped and can’t get away for the moment. Once he reacts, he will definitely have people guarding all the major stations. Sending you out will likely be a bit difficult.”
Wen Yuhuai ran his fingers through his hair irritably. “Then where can I go? Where can I stay? Do I have to live my life hiding and running?”
Gu Yanxiu’s gaze dimmed slightly, his voice becoming even gentler. “A-Yu can hide at my place for a few days first. He can’t keep people guarding the stations forever. Once Xingjian lets his guard down, I’ll send you out.”
Wen Yuhuai looked at him with a few sparks of distrust. “To your place?”
He hadn’t forgotten that this man had also confessed to him. What if he went there and was locked up again?
Gu Yanxiu nodded without a change in expression, then immediately added: “Don’t worry, I won’t limit your freedom to go out or your social freedom. I’ve already bought a new phone for you, and the SIM card is brand new. Once we’re out, you can call your parents to let them know you’re safe.”
This seemed to be the optimal solution for now. Wen Yuhuai didn’t act coy anymore and decisively got into the car with Gu Yanxiu.
The night was deep. A sleek, all-black car sped along the highway, its headlights piercing through the darkness like sharp blades. It wasn’t until half an hour later that it finally left the mountain road and merged into the surging traffic of the main road.
They made a brief stop at a coffee shop. Wen Yuhuai changed into the clothes Gu Yanxiu had prepared in advance. By the time they got back in the car, they had switched to a different vehicle.
The car drove all the way into an underground garage. This was a high-end residential complex in the city center. Wen Yuhuai hadn’t been here much, but he knew the houses here cost a fortune.
Gu Yanxiu actually had a place here too.
Thinking about it, it wasn’t surprising. After all, the Gu family was in the real estate business. They might lack anything else, but they would never lack houses.
The underground garage was very quiet at midnight. The two took the elevator straight to the top floor. As soon as the door opened, Wen Yuhuai couldn’t help but show a bit of surprise.
Nothing else—the interior of the house was much larger than he had imagined, as if the entire floor had been joined together.
As expected, Gu Yanxiu explained gently from the side, “The original layout was a bit small, so I simply bought the whole floor and knocked it through, then redesigned it. Take a look and see if you like it.”
Wen Yuhuai stood there without speaking. Right now, he was at most a guest living under someone else’s roof. How could it be his place to say if he liked it or not?
Gu Yanxiu brushed past his shoulder and walked inside first. He soon turned back to look at Wen Yuhuai, revealing a harmless smile.
“A-Yu, come in quickly.”
Wen Yuhuai looked at him hesitantly, but finally stepped inside. He then asked tentatively, “Are you staying here tonight?”
Gu Yanxiu shook his head with a gentle expression. “I won’t be staying here. But don’t worry, you can tell me if you need anything, and I’ll have someone deliver it to you.”
Wen Yuhuai breathed a sigh of relief almost imperceptibly. Being alone made things much easier; he didn’t have to worry about anything strange happening.
“But I might have to stay tonight. It’s too late. Leaving now might alert the enemy.”
Wen Yuhuai nodded. He wasn’t an unreasonable person. The man had spent the whole night running around for him; he naturally wouldn’t kick him out at this critical moment.
“I’ll leave secretly tomorrow morning. This house is currently under someone else’s name, and that person is living downstairs right now. With him as cover, Fu Xingjian won’t be able to trace it here for a while.”
Wen Yuhuai went to his room. Just as he was about to close the door, he suddenly remembered something and turned back to Gu Yanxiu, who was standing in the hallway. “Then… what about my phone?”
Gu Yanxiu curled his lips into a smile. “I’ll have it sent to you first thing tomorrow morning. Sleep peacefully.”
Wen Yuhuai double-locked the bedroom door.
The room here was also very large, not at all inferior to the one in the mountainside villa. There was also a large floor-to-ceiling window. Looking out from here, the night view of the capital was fully visible.
But he was trapped here, unable even to go out as he pleased.
A wave of irritation surfaced in Wen Yuhuai’s eyes, and he pulled the curtains shut with a snap.
He had been wearing pajamas when he arrived. He had left in such a hurry, and fearing that those clothes might have trackers, he hadn’t brought anything with him.
But now, not knowing how long he would be staying here, having only one pair of pajamas definitely wouldn’t do.
Wen Yuhuai opened the wardrobe to take a look, thinking that if there were no clothes, he would have to remind Gu Yanxiu to buy a few. However, the moment the wardrobe was pulled open, he froze on the spot.
It was filled with clothes—shirts, suits, sweaters, coats, and several sets of pajamas. It was a dazzling array. Everything he could possibly wear was there, all in his size, and all brand new.
It was as if someone had already prepared them in advance, knowing he would come here to stay.
