Chapter 70: The Man’s Identity — “He Is Far Crazier Than You Imagine” part 1
The emergency room door was suddenly pushed open. A nurse, dressed in scrubs with only her eyes visible, looked extremely anxious.
She didn’t see Lu Xunye crouching by the door. She grabbed a doctor from the blood transfusion department who was on duty and asked, “Have you seen Director Liu? I can’t get through to his phone.”
“Director Liu left just now for an urgent matter. What’s wrong? Speak slowly.”
The nurse said urgently, “The patient is hemorrhaging. Is there any RH-negative A blood in the blood bank?”
The doctor she stopped froze in surprise, realizing the severity of the situation. “No. I’ll report this to the blood station to request a transfer immediately. Remember to fill out the application form for me later.”
With that, he sprinted down the hallway.
Seeing him disappear in the blink of an eye, the nurse was still gasping for breath.
Turning around, she saw Lu Xunye standing behind her like a ghost. Even after years in the medical field, she was still startled.
She quickly regained her composure and tried to reassure him. “Family member, please don’t worry yet. We will do our best.”
She handed him a form. “Sign this.”
Lu Xunye’s gaze fell on the flowery signature of the attending physician in the blood transfusion application section. He clicked his pen and signed in the family member column.
After signing, he said urgently, “I have RH-negative A blood. I can donate.”
The nurse’s head was spinning. She took the form but still patiently explained, “Blood relatives cannot donate to each other.”
Lu Xunye was a bit incoherent at this point. He waved his hands in denial. “I’m not his relative. He is… my creditor.”
Hearing this, the nurse gave him a strange look but immediately prioritized the matter. “Then follow me. After we test the blood, if there are no issues, you can donate.”
……
When Pei Huaizhi and Feng Chengyu returned, there was no one at the door of the operating room. The sign above the door still read “In Progress.”
Feng Chengyu looked around. “Where is he?”
A long time later, Lu Xunye returned looking shell-shocked. Feng Chengyu immediately went to meet him. “Where did you go? Why do you look like this?”
Lu Xunye: “Blood test.”
“Huh?” Feng Chengyu didn’t understand what he meant.
The nurse who returned with him explained the whole situation.
Feng Chengyu was stunned by the low probability of this coincidence. “So, did you donate?”
The nurse also didn’t understand why Lu Xunye cared so much about a creditor. In her experience, most people would wish their creditors dead.
She answered truthfully.
“No. When we performed the cross-matching test between this gentleman’s blood sample and the patient’s, a severe red blood cell agglutination occurred. If we were to perform a direct transfusion, there is a high probability it would cause the patient to suffer from hemolysis, which can be fatal.”
Lu Xunye looked up and silently scanned the three people before him, then suddenly turned around and ran off.
“Hey!” Feng Chengyu was about to chase him when Pei Huaizhi grabbed his shoulder.
“Don’t go. Let him calm down.” Pei Huaizhi gave his arm a reassuring squeeze and asked the nurse, “What is the fastest it would take to get blood from the blood station and transfuse it into the patient?”
The nurse could tell from their clothes that they were all wealthy, so she didn’t dare be negligent.
“If the matching goes smoothly and there are no issues in the process, it will take at least four hours. But this blood type is rare; the blood station might not have it. And judging by the current blood loss of the patient, I’m afraid he won’t make it that long.”
Feng Chengyu was at a loss. “Then what do we do? Fly it in from another city?”
Pei Huaizhi asked again, “Can RH-negative O blood be given to the patient?”
The nurse nodded. “Yes.”
“Thank you.” Having received a positive response, Pei Huaizhi pulled Feng Chengyu back toward the operating room.
“What do you mean by asking that? Are you that blood type?” Feng Chengyu grabbed his arm hopefully.
“No, but I have a way.” Pei Huaizhi pinched his face and pulled out his phone to make a call.
……
Lu Xunye crouched alone on the steps at the hospital entrance, leaning his head back against the transparent glass door, staring blankly at the bright stars hanging high in the sky.
The star-studded night was missing its moon.
It was already the beginning of spring, yet the night wind felt more bone-chilling than the dead of winter.
“System, are you there?”
The System hurriedly replied: [I’m here!]
Lu Xunye spoke in a raspy voice. “Help me… I’m begging you.”
Passersby saw him talking to the sky and whispered as they pushed through the door, “He’s sick.”
Lu Xunye seemed oblivious. He didn’t feel the anger of being insulted, but instead let out a soft laugh. “Truly, I am quite sick.”
He waved his hand in front of his eyes, as if asking the System and himself, “Isn’t this place fake? Don’t I have to go back? Am I… not just a cannon fodder?”
He thought: How come the number of people I owe keeps increasing?
The System couldn’t bear to see him like this: [I can only stabilize his current vital signs to buy more time for the doctors, but my level isn’t high enough to fundamentally heal anyone other than the Host. I’m sorry.]
Lu Xunye suddenly lowered his head and rested it on his knees. “Thank you, Xiao Ai.”
A woman who was rushing toward the entrance paused for a few seconds to look at the curled-up Lu Xunye before snapping out of it and hurriedly pushing the door open.
The System beamed and took the opportunity to say: [No need for thanks! Just work hard to complete your tasks.]
When they went back, the tense expressions of the others had indeed relaxed.
“I told you it would be fine.” Feng Chengyu’s joy was palpable as he ran over. “The doctor said the uncle’s condition has stabilized, and there’s blood.”
“Blood?”
Following Lu Xunye’s question.
He saw a middle-aged woman walking over from the corner of the hallway with one sleeve rolled up high, her other hand pressing a cotton swab against her pale arm.
Amidst Lu Xunye’s confusion, the woman approached and was about to kneel to him.
His hands were faster than his brain as he caught her elbows and pulled her up. “What are you doing?”
When the woman stood up.
Lu Xunye realized she was already in tears, though she was trying her best to stifle her sobs. She choked out her thanks to him: “Thank you, Lu-xiansheng. Thank you so much.”
Lu Xunye was full of question marks and looked to Feng Chengyu for help.
Feng Chengyu was speechless.
“Da-jie, rest for a bit. His head is a bit messy right now.”
After saying that, Feng Chengyu gave Pei Huaizhi a look.
“……” Pei Huaizhi approached, supporting the woman’s arm and leading her to a seat. “Please sit for a moment.”
Feng Chengyu watched this scene with satisfaction, then pulled Lu Xunye aside and whispered.
“This Da-jie is the person you asked me to arrange a job for! She has a daughter named Xiao Yun. But since she had no work experience and dropped out of junior high, I could only let her work as a maid in my house for the time being while I looked for something else.”
“Before the New Year, my family arranged a group physical exam. Because she is RH-negative O, Pei Huaizhi remembered. This time, when Da-jie heard it was you who needed help, she rushed here in the middle of the night to donate blood.”
Lu Xunye was enlightened. He shifted his steps, walking back to stop in front of the woman.
“Regardless, thank you for your help this time. You can ask for anything you want, as long as it’s within my power.”
“No need, no need.”
The woman was overwhelmed and hurriedly refused.
“You’ve already helped me enough. It’s just a bit of blood; it’s really nothing. I didn’t even know I was this blood type.”
“If it weren’t for you, I would never have been able to get a divorce and win custody of Xiao Yun. You even asked Xiao Feng to help me find a job and get Xiao Yun into school. If I hadn’t met you all back then, I really don’t know what I would have done.”
“Right,” Da-jie said, as if suddenly remembering something, her expression becoming anxious again. “What about that gentleman? Is the wound on his head okay?”
Lu Xunye gently pushed her back into the chair. “He’s not here. His wound has already healed.”
“That’s good.”
Da-jie sighed in relief, but then something else occurred to her, and she became flustered again.
“My ex-husband didn’t go to cause you trouble, did he? He’s a total scumbag. Since you helped me, he will definitely try to get revenge on you.”
As the person who had been faded into memory was mentioned, the shadow in her heart was magnified before her eyes.
She clenched her fingers, biting her knuckles, her body starting to tremble slightly again.
“What should I do? He wants money more than life. Since he didn’t get the money, he’ll definitely retaliate. I’ve dragged you all into this.”
Lu Xunye knelt down.
Looking at this woman who used to have a thin, weathered face and was now looking much healthier and more radiant.
He spoke softly: “That man has already been arrested by the police. He’s in prison now. It’s fine; it’s all over. Xiao Yun is still with you.”
Feng Chengyu added, “Yeah, let’s not mention that. Where’s Xiao Yun? Is she asleep? I bought a princess dress at the mall today that looks amazing. When we go back in the morning, let her try it on.”
The woman repeatedly declined. “That won’t do. You’ve already bought her so many things.”
“It’s fine,” Feng Chengyu said carelessly. “As long as the little girl is happy.”
“Lu-xiansheng.”
The woman called out to Lu Xunye.
She carefully pulled a rather ugly clay toy out of her pocket.
“Xiao Yun made this in her craft class on her first day of school. She kept it safe and said she wanted to give it to you when she saw you again.”
“But it’s too late tonight, and Xiao Yun is already asleep, so I took the liberty of bringing it for her.”
Comparing this crude object to Lu Xunye’s expensive clothing, the woman lowered her head in self-consciousness, biting her lip.
“I said the child made it too ugly.” The woman joked, “When she makes something better, she can give it to you then.”
As she started to pull it back, Lu Xunye reached out and took it. He observed the air-dried clay sculpture of a red-eyed little white rabbit in his palm. Its eyes were huge, and its body was kneaded into a fat ball; it was “ugly-cute.”
Those red round eyes were just as dazzling as the red gemstone on the rabbit brooch she had carefully protected on her dirty, wrinkled cotton coat that day.
Lu Xunye’s uneasy mood shattered and dissolved. He broke into a laugh through his tears. “I like it very much.”
He looked down at himself. His black suit jacket was soaked with patches of blood, leaving dark stains, but a touch of green was particularly eye-catching.
He took off the bamboo leaf brooch made with velvet flower craftsmanship from his chest and pressed it into the woman’s hand without allowing for argument.
“This is my return gift. Tell Xiao Yun I love it. I’ll wait for her to grow up and make me something even better.”
With the System’s help and the timely blood transfusion, the surgery was a success.
……
“I know you’re close with Shen Yunqian. Thank you for tonight, but can you not tell him about what happened?”
Pei Huaizhi turned his head to stare at him, sneering, “What if that maniac thinks I kidnapped you tonight?”
Lu Xunye thought about the word “maniac” and felt that the other person’s perception of Shen Yunqian was skewed.
He smiled bitterly. “He won’t. I sent him a message telling him I had business at the Lu house.”
“The Lu family definitely won’t let any news that’s bad for their reputation leak out. When Shen Yunqian opens his phone, he should see a trending topic like #Lu Family Announces Heir#?”
Lu Xunye continued, “Given Lu Feng’s character, instead of dealing with Lu Yan’s mess, he’s so eager to announce my identity. He probably wants to use this to suppress the morning’s scandal.”
“You’re half right.”
Pei Huaizhi’s gaze rested on Lu Xunye’s face for several seconds before looking away.
“Lu Feng indeed wants to use you to suppress the scandal, but not with the heir gimmick. He’s had two sets of contingency measures from the start.”
“From your special blood type to the failure of the blood match with the man in the ward, to the way he protected you so recklessly even at the cost of his life…”
