Chapter 5: My Family Has a Child Now
However, Ling Xingcheng ultimately failed to find the dog. He had no idea which dog was Yu An’s. After catching every dog in the vicinity, not a single one turned out to be Yu An’s Monday.
Several calls from Kyoto urged them to return. Ling Xingcheng held a half-grown yellow puppy, his medium-length red hair tied into a small bun. He turned toward the door. “You guys go back first. I’ll return to Kyoto once I find the dog.”
He really didn’t believe in the supernatural. Could a mere dog stump him? A joke!
Yu An was incredibly moved. This brother was so good. He said softly to Ling Xingcheng, “Brother, you are the best brother in the world.”
After saying that, his cheeks turned red and he lunged into Wen Xun’s arms, too shy to look at Ling Xingcheng’s expression.
Ling Xingcheng maintained his arrogant posture, but his ears turned slightly red. He blustered loudly to cover it up, “Of course I’m the best. You’ve got decent taste, kid.”
Yu An took it as a compliment and smiled sweetly with his two dimples.
Ling Xingcheng stayed behind to continue the search. Yu An, Lin Huaichen, and the others set off for Kyoto. This was Yu An’s first time on a plane. Aside from a moment of dizziness during takeoff, everything was normal.
Yu An stared out the window at the blue sky and white clouds with his round eyes. For some reason, he loved gazing at the azure sky, as if behind the heavy layers of clouds, an existence he missed was also watching him.
Wen Xun sat next to Yu An. Seeing he wasn’t uncomfortable, he let out a sigh of relief, then stared in a daze at the child’s exquisite profile.
Everything about the child he liked was adorable. A surge of satisfaction and affection occupied Wen Xun’s entire being. From the first moment he saw Yu An in a photo, he had fallen uncontrollably in love with this child.
As it turned out, his taste was correct. This child was truly lovely.
“Baby, I know you love our precious son, but can you look at me for a second?” Lin Huaichen leaned on Wen Xun’s shoulder, his tone sounding very much like a neglected husband. “I couldn’t possibly be out of favor already, could I?”
Wen Xun finally graced him with a look. He stared at Lin Huaichen’s resentful face for a few seconds before kissing him lightly on the cheek. “Be good. An-an is still small.”
You’re an adult; don’t compete with a child for favor.
Given Wen Xun’s personality, he was rarely proactive. This time, Lin Huaichen received an immense benefit. He happily pulled Yu An into his arms, resting his chin on the boy’s head. “Our An-an is truly a great treasure.”
Yu An looked dazed, blinking his lake-blue eyes. He still wanted to see the blue sky outside, so he reached his arms toward Wen Xun for a hug.
Wen Xun pushed Lin Huaichen away and pulled the little guy from his arms, placing him back in his original window seat. Yu An said, “Thank you, Papa,” and continued leaning against the window to watch the clouds and the occasional mountain ranges below.
The journey from Luoyun Village to Kyoto took nearly three hours. Once the novelty wore off, Yu An began to feel drowsy. His head nodded bit by bit; clearly exhausted to the point of a blurred consciousness, he was stubborn about keeping his eyes open, only for his eyelids to droop again a moment later.
Lin Huaichen was the first to notice the child’s drowsiness. He watched with a smile for a while, finding it quite amusing. He nudged Wen Xun with his elbow. “Baby, look. The little treasure is dozing off.”
The novice fathers were full of intense interest in every move the child made. The two adults watched Yu An’s struggle with sleep with full concentration, as if it were the most entertaining thing in the world.
Eventually, Yu An landed in Lin Huaichen’s arms. The exhausted child wasn’t picky about who held him, obediently resting his head against Lin Huaichen’s chest and gradually falling asleep. Lacking a sense of security, his small hand clutched one of Wen Xun’s hands.
By the time they reached Blue Moon Bay, it was around eight in the evening. The island was silent and pitch black, with only the Lin family manor brightly lit. The private jet landed on the helipad, surrounded by waiting officials from various departments.
Lin Huaichen took off his jacket to cover the soundly sleeping child. Yu An’s small face was pressed against his shoulder, and the drool flowing out had dampened a large patch of his clothing.
Lin Huaichen didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He gently pinched the little guy’s nose. Wen Xun used a tissue to give him a brief wipe, and the two of them walked down the plane one after the other.
“Oh! Patriarch, why did you just…”
The words of the middle-aged man with a beer belly were forced back by a cold glare from Wen Xun. Wen Xun naturally had sharp features; when he slightly darkened his expression, he appeared very stern.
Wen Xun lowered his voice. “There’s a child sleeping. Don’t speak so loudly.”
Only then did President Wu notice the child in Lin Huaichen’s arms. The rumor about the Lin Patriarch planning to adopt a child had been spreading like wildfire through their circles over the last two days. He hadn’t believed it at first. The Lin and Wen families were top-tier noble households; how could they leave everything to a child with no blood relation?
But now that the two had truly brought a child back, President Wu peeked at Yu An’s appearance in his shock. This was the future Crown Prince; he had to remember this face clearly.
Lin Huaichen gently covered Yu An’s ears and looked up at President Wu, who was craning his neck to look. “Is there something?”
President Wu wore a flattering smile. “Well, I heard there are a few vacancies in the CAF Project. I want my child to go. I wonder if I could have that honor…”
The CAF Project was the cradle of Ability Users. Many powerful Ability Users were born there, including the S-rank Arbiter [Burn to Ashes]. President Wu stole a glance at Wen Xun; the main thing was that Wen Xun was the General Technical Director of the CAF Project.
The Wu family was among the top tier in Kyoto and possessed power and influence, but securing a spot still felt difficult. He could only use his slight cooperative relationship with the Lin family to beg Lin Huaichen.
Upon hearing he was here for this, Wen Xun’s expression darkened. He asked one more question, “How old is your child?”
President Wu: “Just turned five this year.”
A flash of disgust appeared in Wen Xun’s eyes. He put his mask back on and stood coldly beside Lin Huaichen, turning his head away and ignoring President Wu.
President Wu froze, not knowing which sentence had displeased Mr. Wen. He opened his mouth, wanting to make amends but not knowing where to start.
Lin Huaichen looked down and touched Yu An’s face. “The spots for the CAF Project are decided by the Base. There’s no use coming to me. Go find the person in charge of the Base.”
President Wu knew immediately that Lin Huaichen didn’t plan to intervene. Leaving aside the fact that the Lin family was the Base’s largest investor, given Lin Huaichen and Wen Xun’s status, putting someone into the CAF Project wouldn’t be an issue at all.
President Wu sighed regretfully. “Sorry for the trouble.”
Watching President Wu’s dejected departure, Wen Xun pursed his lips in confusion. “The CAF Project isn’t some grand cake. Why does everyone want a piece of it?”
Lin Huaichen gave a light laugh. “For them, it is indeed a delicious cake. It’s just that this cake is poisonous.”
Yu An was completely unaware of the external disputes, sleeping soundly and drooling on Lin Huaichen’s shoulder. Lin Huaichen’s hand itchily pinched his small face.
Wen Xun was terrified he would wake the child. Every time Lin Huaichen pinched Yu An, he pinched Lin Huaichen. The newly formed family of three bickered and played as they got into the car and drove toward home.
The warm morning light pierced through the heavy clouds, casting its radiance upon the world.
Inside the Lin manor, a maid holding new children’s clothes hurried toward the second floor. She paused at the closed door for a moment, not daring to knock.
What if the newly arrived Young Master was still sleeping? She didn’t want to displease him on the first day. She preferred to wait a while longer until there was movement inside.
Wen Xun stepped out from the master bedroom. He glanced at Yu An’s door. “Give the clothes to me. No need to trouble yourself.”
The maid bowed, her tone respectful. “Little Patriarch, these are the new summer arrivals delivered this morning. The Patriarch specifically picked them for the Young Master before he left. The rest of the clothes have been placed in the walk-in closet.”
The outfit Lin Huaichen had picked for Yu An was very cute: an apricot short-sleeved shirt paired with a coffee-colored small vest and a matching baseball cap. One could imagine how adorable Yu An would look in it.
Wen Xun took the clothes and pushed open Yu An’s door. The curtains were closed, and the air conditioner was diligently blowing cool air. There was a small lump on the bed; Yu An was nestled in the quilt, sleeping sweetly.
Wen Xun pulled the curtains open, and the outside light illuminated the room full of childish charm.
Yu An was still clutching his tattered cat plushie. Wen Xun bent over and poked his small cheek, his voice gentle. “Little An-an, it’s time to wake up.”
Yu An let out a few whimpers, his curled lashes trembling. He slowly opened his eyes. His mind was still immersed in his dreams. He stared at Wen Xun for a long time before his consciousness gradually returned.
“Papa~” Yu An shyly burrowed into his little quilt, pulling it up to cover half his face. “Papa, where is this?”
“It’s our home.” Wen Xun unfolded Yu An’s clothes. “Come, let me dress you. Breakfast is ready. We’ll go down to eat in a bit.”
Yu An looked around. The room was very large, with starry sky wallpaper on the walls and a soft carpet on the floor. Various dolls were piled in the corner, and there was a 1.8-meter-long dolphin pillow on the bed.
What a beautiful room.
Yu An’s eyes were full of love, but the next second, Wen Xun came to take off his clothes. Before the little guy could react, he was stripped bare. His face instantly turned crimson, and he hurriedly tried to pull the quilt to cover himself.
“Papa… shame-shame…”
Yu An knew that not wearing clothes was a “shame-shame” behavior.
“It’s okay. I’m your papa.” Wen Xun’s expression remained normal as he awkwardly dressed Yu An. “You’re still a baby and can’t look after yourself. I will take care of you until you grow up.”
Yu An obediently raised his arms. Feeling the comfortable texture of the clothes, he slowly overcame his awkwardness. “B-but I can dress myself.”
He had been taking care of himself for quite some time.
Wen Xun’s expression froze. He suddenly remembered that due to his experiences, Yu An was much more independent than children his age. Dressing himself certainly wouldn’t stump him.
Wen Xun buttoned his shirt and candidly spoke the truth. “I like helping you dress. It’s also my first time being a papa, and I’ve never dressed a child before. Just let me help you this once.”
As he spoke, he looked at Yu An with a pleading gaze.
This move left Yu An stumped. If he refused, would that count as bullying Papa? Little Yu An liked Wen Xun, so naturally, he didn’t want him to be sad. He stuttered out his consent, “…Then… thank you, Papa.”
Wen Xun happily kissed his small face, continued helping him with his vest and pants, and dressed Yu An up beautifully. He then took out his phone and snapped several photos, sending them all to Lin Huaichen.
On the other side, at a high-level meeting, the detection officer who was reporting was tremblingly wiping the sweat from his forehead. He spoke with clear articulation, “The mental power magnetic field outside the atmosphere has exceeded normal values by nearly a hundred thousand times. Simultaneously, our Blue Bird system has captured a type of Xenogenic that has never been registered.”
“They are incredibly powerful—more powerful than any Xenogenics ever discovered. They have been hovering outside the atmosphere. Currently, no aggressive intent has been discovered…”
After the officer finished his report, there was no response for a long time. He looked up, only to find everyone’s gaze focused on the Lin Patriarch.
At this moment, President Lin, who was usually caustic and strict, was looking at his phone screen with a soft gaze. The doting in his eyes was almost overflowing as he typed a message.
The person sitting next to him nudged him with his eyes, secretly teasing.
The meeting fell into a dead silence for a moment. Lin Huaichen noticed and gave a light laugh. “My lover sent a message. The child put on new clothes and insisted on showing me photos. Cough… please continue.”
For a moment, everyone exchanged looks. It seemed the Lin family had truly brought back a Little Crown Prince.
One of the senior Arbiters, who also had a child, smiled. “Children are always quite clingy. My kid insists I answer whenever he calls, otherwise he’ll definitely throw a fit when I get home. They’re all little ancestors.”
Lin Huaichen glanced at him and said indifferently: “Mine is quite obedient. He’s as cute as his Little Papa. He’s not the same type as that little devil of yours.”
Arbiter: “…”
Is this subtle bragging for real?
