Chapter 187
After Shen Shuyu finished sending the message, he meticulously worked on a test paper. Just as he finished calculating a problem, there was a knock on his bedroom door. He glanced over, put down his pen, and walked to the door. When he opened it, a house servant was standing there.
Shen Shuyu asked, “What is it?”
The servant replied, “The barber Madame booked has arrived. Young Master Xili is already downstairs. Madame sent me up to ask if you would like to have your hair trimmed as well.”
Shen Shuyu touched his hair. It had indeed grown quite a bit recently. He said, “Alright, I’ll be down in a moment.”
The servant acknowledged him and left.
Shen Shuyu quickly returned to his desk and checked his terminal. Wen Jiafei had just replied to his message.
[Wen Jiafei: Not going.]
The refusal was very blunt, seemingly leaving no room for negotiation.
Shen Shuyu curled his lips but didn’t push it. After all, Wen Jiafei probably still had to work his part-time jobs. As the weather got colder, more people liked to drink a little alcohol to warm their bodies. Besides, business was good during the New Year period, so Wen Jiafei could earn a lot.
Shen Shuyu found Feng Xing’s contact on his terminal: [Not going, I’m staying home.]
Feng Xing replied instantly: [Fine, fine. I’ll bring you some local specialties when I get back.]
Shen Shuyu walked out of the room with his terminal in hand, asking as he walked: [Are you bringing a hot spring back for me?]
Feng Xing: [We haven’t seen each other for two days, and you’re getting more and more humorous.]
Shen Shuyu also felt he was becoming more humorous. Since there was nothing to do now, the System had gone back to consult the Main Brain to see when his mission would be considered complete. Both he and the System guessed that as long as Shen Xili successfully entered the military, the plot outside of the original story should be over.
After all, the center of this novel was Shen Xili. Once the central issues were resolved, there shouldn’t be any other problems.
If all went well, he should be able to receive his reward once the System returned.
The thought made Shen Shuyu happy. He went downstairs with his terminal, and the servant guided him to the barber room on the first floor. This room was rarely used; Shen Shuyu had only peeked inside once when he first arrived and hadn’t entered since.
After all, they were all busy. Shen Yisi went without saying; he had a room above his office, and the company was like a second home to him. Previously, Father and Mother Shen were also out traveling or doing charity work. As a student, Shen Shuyu usually just got his hair cut somewhere outside; he didn’t really need a dedicated room.
The door to the barber room was closed. Shen Shuyu stuffed his terminal back into his pocket and reached out to press the handle. Just as he was about to open it, someone inside opened it first. Caught off guard, Shen Shuyu was pulled forward a step. Fortunately, the person inside noticed him and reached out to steady his shoulder.
“Careful.”
Shen Xili’s voice rang out from above. Shen Shuyu stood up straight, about to say he was already being careful, but when he met the other’s face, he froze.
Seeing Shen Shuyu staring at him intently, Shen Xili felt a bit self-conscious and asked, “Does it look bad?”
Shen Shuyu snapped out of it. “It looks quite good.”
The military had strict requirements, especially regarding appearance; one had to look spirited. Shen Xili’s hair used to be a bit long. Although it looked good, it didn’t meet the requirements.
He had originally intended to go out for a haircut, but Mother Shen had called the barber directly to the house with one phone call.
Thus, Shen Xili had decisively gotten a buzz cut.
He was naturally handsome, inheriting all the best features of Father and Mother Shen. When his hair was longer, he looked slightly feminine, but now with the buzz cut, he looked full of heroic spirit.
Shen Shuyu was suddenly reminded of a saying: if beauty were a crime, anyone who saw him would be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Thinking this, Shen Shuyu said it aloud: “If beauty could kill, you’ll definitely be safe when you go off to war.”
Shen Xili arched an eyebrow. “What?”
Shen Shuyu said sincerely, “Because before anyone could even make a move against you, they’d be killed by your face.”
Humans are visual creatures. Shen Shuyu had always known Shen Xili was handsome, but this time, it felt truly different.
Seeing Shen Shuyu’s sincere expression, the awkwardness Shen Xili felt after cutting his hair dissipated quite a bit. He raised his hand and lightly pushed Shen Shuyu’s forehead with his finger. “Glib-tongued.”
Shen Shuyu laughed twice and asked, “Where are you going?”
“To get a glass of water,” Shen Xili said. “And you?”
“To get a haircut.” Shen Shuyu pushed the door open a bit further and walked in. Mother Shen was still getting her hair styled, and Father Shen was sitting nearby playing chess with the butler, looking quite leisurely.
Shen Shuyu walked up behind Mother Shen, placed his hands on her shoulders, and gently massaged them, not forgetting to praise her: “Isn’t Mom going to stun us all with her beauty later?”
Mother Shen looked at him in the mirror with a smile, then patted the hand on her shoulder. “Did you put honey on your lips today? So sweet.”
Shen Shuyu was cheerful. He sat down in an empty seat and told the barber, “Just a trim is fine, thank you.”
The barber draped the cloth over him, and the scissors moved quickly. Shen Shuyu’s hair was soon neatened up. After the haircut, his head felt much lighter.
Mother Shen said from the side, “By the way, your father said that once you finish your exams, he wants you to come along with us for a trip. Are you willing?”
Shen Shuyu said, “Sure. Is Brother going?”
“He’s not. There’s a mountain of work to do at the company,” Mother Shen said. “We’ll just come back in time for the company’s annual meeting.”
Shen Shuyu nodded. “Alright.”
As they spoke, Shen Xili walked back in with a glass of water. Mother Shen beckoned him over and said, “We plan to take Xiao Yu out for a trip after his exams. How about we go see you then?”
Before Shen Xili could speak, Father Shen, who was playing chess nearby, spoke up first. “The place where the military is stationed is a restricted area. How could they just let you in to visit? Don’t cause trouble for Xili, or you’ll get him punished.”
Father Shen turned his head and waved at him. “Xili, come over and help me look at this game. I feel like no matter how I move, it’s wrong.”
Shen Xili smiled slightly. “Alright.”
Mother Shen looked back through the mirror and said dissatisfiedly, “With your terrible chess skills, stop dragging Old Ye into it. Old Ye is probably busy trying to figure out how to lose to you.”
Father Shen sighed and looked at Old Ye. “Just play. Don’t hold back. For every game you win against me, you’ll get a red envelope. We’ll stop once she’s finished with her hair.”
Old Ye laughed. “How about letting Young Master Xili play? My chess skills aren’t great either. Let Young Master Xili accompany you.”
Father Shen glanced at Shen Xili. “That works too. Then this game counts as your win.”
Old Ye happily agreed.
Mother Shen clicked her tongue and looked at Shen Shuyu, who was being cleaned of stray hairs. “Your father really loves his pride.”
Shen Shuyu couldn’t help but chuckle as well.
