Chapter 9: Grandparents
In contrast to Grandma Lin’s flamboyant and lively personality, Grandpa Lin was refined and easygoing. Dragging two large suitcases, he greeted Lin Huaichen and Wen Xun, chatting about their recent daily lives.
There weren’t many topics to discuss, and after a brief chat, the three men watched with smiling eyes as Yi Ruxin held Yu An, kissing him repeatedly and calling him “precious grandson” with every breath.
After a while, Grandpa Lin found an opportunity to hand a document to Yu An, patting his small head. “This is a meeting gift from Grandpa and Grandma.”
Inside was a share transfer agreement for the Lin family. The Lin family’s industries spanned nearly every sector, with countless large and small companies under their umbrella. With these shares, even if Yu An did nothing, he could live comfortably for several lifetimes.
Yu An didn’t understand the significant meaning of the agreement. He instinctively looked at Wen Xun and Lin Huaichen. Only after seeing them both nod did he accept the gift, thanking them in a soft, milky voice.
After thinking for a moment, he pulled his favorite blue diamond from his pocket and held it out to Grandpa Lin. “Grandpa, meeting gift.”
Grandpa Lin froze for a moment, clearly not expecting a return gift. He let out a laugh and shook his head, his face unconsciously filling with a smile. “Grandpa doesn’t need it. An-an, keep it for yourself. You can buy many, many things with it.”
Yu An was exceptionally stubborn in certain aspects, insisting on giving it away. “Must. Must accept meeting gift. An-an accepted Grandpa’s gift, so Grandpa must accept An-an’s gift.”
Grandpa Lin smiled helplessly. “Then, thank you, An-an.”
Yu An smiled, revealing two small dimples. “You’re welcome.”
“What about mine, An-an?” Yi Ruxin pretended to be very sad, intentionally teasing him. “Why does Grandpa get a gift while I don’t?”
Yu An’s logic was simple: Grandpa gave him a gift, so he had to give one back. But now that Grandma was sad because she didn’t have one, the little guy froze in confusion, not knowing what to do.
Yu An quickly lowered his head and rummaged through his pockets, but he had only brought the blue stone today and couldn’t find anything else to use as a gift.
“There. There’s a gift there.” Yu An pointed toward the collection room upstairs. “I’ll go get it for Grandma.”
As he spoke, he tried to scramble down from Yi Ruxin’s arms.
Yi Ruxin held him tighter, laughing heartily as she rubbed his small face. “How can you be such a cute baby? Grandma doesn’t want your gift; Grandma already has plenty of treasures.”
She took the necklace from her neck and wrapped it around Yu An’s tiny wrist. “For our treasure.”
The necklace was encrusted with pavé diamonds and featured a red agate pendant carved into the shape of an exquisite small calabash. It looked sparkly and bright. Yu An fell in love with it at first sight, his eyes filled with adoration.
Even though Yi Ruxin said she didn’t want his gift, Yu An was still determined to give her something. After finding a chance, he ran to the collection room, picked out a Hetian jade pendant, and gave it to Grandma Lin.
Yi Ruxin truly couldn’t decline, so she accepted it and pulled the little guy into her arms, kissing his cheek. “Precious, how can you be so lovable!”
Yu An was prone to shyness when praised. Like a mimosa plant tremblingly closing its leaves, he immediately hid back in Wen Xun’s arms, his large lake-blue eyes peeking secretly at Yi Ruxin.
Yi Ruxin chatted with Lin Huaichen, occasionally glancing at Yu An and making exaggerated faces at him. The child would immediately shrink toward Wen Xun in alarm, burying his face in Wen Xun’s chest.
Yi Ruxin laughed with delight, not having the slightest intuition that she was “bullying” the child.
Since Wen Xun’s parents had yet to arrive, Yi Ruxin grew a bit restless. She threw an arm around Wen Xun’s shoulder like a buddy and inquired, “Good A-Xun, when is your mother coming?”
Wen Xun checked the time on his phone. “Soon, I think. She messaged me ten minutes ago saying she had already gotten off the plane.”
Yi Ruxin nodded with joy, sitting on the sofa with great anticipation, craning her neck to wait for Wen Xun’s mother.
More than an hour later, Butler Ide returned first to tell them that Wen Xun’s parents had arrived. A moment later, the sound of light footsteps came from the entrance.
Yu An instinctively raised his head to look. He saw a woman dressed in a long, pale purple dress walking gracefully toward them. Her thick, slightly curly long hair was draped casually over her shoulders, adorned with an exquisite iris hairpin.
Her soulful peach-blossom eyes drooped slightly, giving her a touch of melancholy in her gaze. The woman’s eyes searched for a moment before landing straight on Wen Xun. Her voice was as soft as water. “Little Xun, come to Mama.”
Yu An didn’t even blink, staring straight as Wen Xun stepped forward to hug the woman. He murmured, “Wow—Papa’s mama is so pretty…”
His words resonated with Grandma Lin. Yi Ruxin’s eyes glowed as she looked at Wen Xun’s mother, secretly taking several photos with her phone. “Of course! She is Madame Iris herself! In the past, countless powerful men would spend thousands just for a smile from her. You didn’t see how spectacular the scene was back then.”
Little Yu An didn’t understand Yi Ruxin’s words, but that didn’t stop him from sensing Madame Iris’s beauty. His lake-blue eyes remained fixed on Wen Xun’s mother, and the latter naturally noticed his presence.
“Is this the child you adopted?” Wen Yun always spoke in a soft, gentle manner, as if filled with infinite tenderness and love. “His personality seems very similar to yours. Is he a ‘silent gourd’ too?”
Wen Xun pursed his lips. “…I am not a silent gourd, and neither is An-an.”
Wen Yun noticed her precious son was unhappy and looked at him with doting eyes. “Alright, I apologize. Actually, your personality is lively and cheerful. Mama was wrong to misjudge you.”
Wen Xun: “…”
He clearly knew she was being sarcastic, but he couldn’t refute it. It was truly infuriating.
Wen Xun turned into a huffy pufferfish. He turned around, picked up Yu An, and sat on the sofa, resting his head on top of Yu An’s head to wordlessly express his protest.
Wen Yun walked over to Yu An and gazed into his unusual eyes.
“Little fellow, your eyes are truly beautiful.” Wen Yun leaned down slightly, her slender finger lightly touching the corner of Yu An’s eye. “Were they this color from birth?”
Yu An blinked, staring fixedly at Wen Yun’s stunningly beautiful face, and nodded.
Wen Yun gave a soft laugh, her tone as slow and gentle as usual. “That truly is a rare eye color. I have never seen a human with this pupil color before.”
Hearing this, Lin Huaichen looked up, his gaze dark and unreadable. “Mom… what do you mean by that?”
If those words came from anyone else, it wouldn’t mean much, but since the person was Madame Iris, who possessed powerful perception abilities, one couldn’t help but think deeper.
Yu An knew nothing of this, happily revealing a smile to Lin Huaichen, his two small dimples appearing on his cheeks.
“I didn’t mean anything.” Wen Yun seemed not to notice the subtle atmosphere and smiled elegantly. “I just think this child’s mental domain is quite powerful. Just like Ling Xingcheng’s was back then. Did he also have contact with Xenogenics before?”
Ling Xingcheng had indeed come into close contact with a powerful Xenogenic as a child, resulting in a mental domain far stronger than his peers. He had entered the S-rank as soon as he reached adulthood.
Hearing her explanation, everyone present simultaneously breathed a sigh of relief, thinking they were overthinking things. An-an was just a child; how could he be a Xenogenic?
He was so good and so cute.
Wen Xun covered Yu An’s ears and explained to Wen Yun, “An-an became an orphan precisely because his relative was killed by a Xenogenic. It’s somewhat similar to Ling Xingcheng’s situation.”
Wen Yun displayed the perfect amount of shock and sympathy. She sighed and reached out to pat Yu An’s small head. “Such a pitiful child.”
Yu An couldn’t hear what the adults were saying. When he felt the hand on his head, he instinctively smiled at Wen Yun.
He got a head pat from his pretty grandma, so happy~
Afterward, the adults gathered to discuss Yu An’s affairs. Grandma Lin’s suggestion was to return to Kyoto and hold a grand welcome banquet for Yu An, making sure everyone knew of his existence.
Lin Huaichen had some reservations. “An-an is quite shy. He likely wouldn’t enjoy such a crowded and noisy banquet.”
Yu An was looking at Wen Xun’s fingers when he suddenly heard his name. He raised his small head. “Mhm, don’t like strangers.”
Wen Yun, who had a socially anxious son herself, offered a solution with a smile. “That’s fine too. The child doesn’t need to do anything. You just need to hold him and make an appearance. We just need the people in the circle to become familiar with little An-an so he won’t be bullied in the future.”
Lin Huaichen pondered for a moment and decided to ask for Yu An’s opinion. Yu An was naturally unwilling to appear in front of many people, but when he heard he only had to do one lap and then leave, he hesitantly agreed.
As Lin Huaichen and the others discussed the specific details, Wen Xun, who never bothered with such things, couldn’t join in and simply stayed to play with Yu An.
“Papa, who is that uncle?” Yu An pointed at the blond man sitting on another sofa. This uncle hadn’t spoken at all, and Yu An didn’t know who he was.
Wen Xun looked in the direction of Yu An’s finger. He froze visibly when his gaze met the man, murmuring in surprise, “Why is it still him… No divorce yet?”
Indeed, Wen Yun had said that night that she would come with his father, but Wen Xun had assumed it would be a “new” father. He hadn’t expected it to be the “old” father.
Yu An: “Mhm?”
Who is he?
“His name is Hicks Dalton. He is my father, your grandpa.” Wen Xun leaned close to Yu An’s ear to explain. “But he isn’t my biological father. I thought he had already divorced my mom; I didn’t expect him to still be around.”
In previous years, Wen Yun had changed boyfriends very frequently. Wen Xun didn’t think much of it; first, because it was Wen Yun’s freedom, and second, because every boyfriend she found was exceptionally good to Wen Xun, always trying to find ways to please him.
Adults would often try to guess his thoughts and buy him gifts. Wen Xun didn’t even need to speak much, and over time, this developed his noble yet taciturn personality.
Yu An was shocked, looking at the man’s handsome features. “Uncle… is Grandpa?”
Wen Xun nodded. “Currently your grandpa.”
Yu An was confused. “Why ‘currently’?”
“Because my mom tends to lose interest in the old for the new. They are very likely to divorce. After the divorce, he won’t be your grandpa anymore.”
“Then what does ‘divorce’ mean?”
“Uh…” Wen Xun stalled, thinking of how to explain it to Yu An. “It means they won’t live together anymore. It means two people going their separate ways.”
Yu An nodded, half-understanding.
On the other side, Hicks noticed Yu An and Wen Xun were secretly sizing him up. He raised his deep blue eyes to look over, and the gazes of the three met in mid-air.
Yu An stared at Hicks without a care, while Wen Xun had already averted his gaze, burying his face in the crook of Yu An’s neck, muttering, “This is so awkward…”
It was that guilty feeling of talking behind someone’s back and getting caught.
Yu An, being an ignorant minor, naturally didn’t understand the awkwardness between adults. Mimicking the way his papa comforted him, he patted his papa’s head. “It’s okay~ Papa, be good~”
A moment later, a young man arrived with many bags of gifts. “These are gifts from Patriarch Dalton for the Young Master and the Little Young Master.”
The young man divided the gifts into two portions. For Yu An, there were some handmade snacks and expensive jewelry. For Wen Xun, there were precious pigments and paintings by famous artists.
In addition, Hicks also gave Yu An the ownership of a private island, real estate in over a dozen cities, and a candy manufacturing company.
Yu An held the documents, completely bewildered. Why did Grandpa, Grandma, and Grandpa/Grandma all like to give him these papers he couldn’t understand?
The little guy didn’t get it. Honestly, he preferred shiny things.
