Little Monster Cub Chapter 13

Chapter 13: The Sick Brother

Wen Xun was silent for a moment, as if he had encountered something utterly incomprehensible. “…You don’t know how?”

Yu An’s eyes were filled with a clarity that was completely untainted by the burdens of knowledge. He shook his head honestly. “No, I don’t.”

Wen Xun fell into a deeper silence. He remembered that no one had ever had to teach him this; even Zoe, the slowest one in the family, had started learning with real-variable functions.

But looking at Yu An’s bright, innocent eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to say anything. He let out a sigh. “…I’ll teach you.”

Setting aside things like differential geometry and functional analysis, Wen Xun began teaching Yu An the basics of multiplication and division by hand. Fortunately, Yu An’s learning ability was excellent; once Wen Xun explained something, Yu An could grasp it immediately.

Suddenly, Wen Xun’s phone began to vibrate. He glanced at it, turned on the speakerphone, and continued helping Yu An with his problems.

“My Great Ancestor! My Great Ancestor, where are you?! Please come back quickly!” A man’s desperate cry echoed in the room. “We can’t do this without you. The CAF Project is completely stalled right now. We’re going to be scolded to death, wahhh…”

The man’s voice was so loud and his tone so mournful that even Soland couldn’t help but poke his head out to watch the excitement.

Yu An stole a glance at the unmoved Wen Xun. Hearing the continuous wailing from the phone, he asked softly, “Papa, aren’t you going to talk to the uncle?”

The uncle sounded like he was about to go crazy.

Wen Xun pursed his lips and spoke the truth. “I really don’t want to talk to him. They want me to go back to work, but I’ve clearly taken a leave of absence.”

To help Yu An adapt to his new environment, Wen Xun had specifically taken a month-long vacation to accompany him. But before the vacation was even halfway over, they were already pestering him to return every day.

Wen Xun was very unhappy.

He didn’t want to work.

But hearing the ghost-like wailing and howling on the other end, Wen Xun’s brow furrowed, and he finally spoke. “This is my vacation time. Stop bothering me. Go find Rong Shili.”

“Professor Rong is right here next to me! He’s the one who told me to call you. He said he can’t handle it.”

Wen Xun: “…”

Sitting right next to Wen Xun, Yu An was the most sensitive to his emotional changes. He keenly sensed that his father’s mood had turned sour.

“Papa?” Yu An worriedly hugged Wen Xun’s neck, snuggling his soft body into his father’s embrace. “Papa, don’t be angry… Blow-blow~ I’ll blow the anger away so you don’t get mad.”

Wen Xun sighed and leaned his head on Yu An’s small shoulder. “I don’t want to go to work…”

The person on the other end of the phone could naturally hear the conversation between Yu An and Wen Xun. Hearing the little guy’s milky voice comforting his father, his frantic mood seemed to be soothed as well.

“Professor, how about you bring your child along too?” the man suggested hopefully. “You can put him directly in the Botanical Garden. There are plenty of kids there; your child won’t be bored.”

Hearing that he could go to work with his father, Yu An immediately tilted his head up, his eyes sparkling as he looked at Wen Xun.

Although the butler and Auntie Liu were at the Lin manor, Wen Xun still didn’t feel right leaving Yu An at home alone. He didn’t agree immediately. “What exactly happened?”

“The condition of the Fu family’s child has deteriorated.”

Wen Xun’s expression darkened. “I’ll be there in a bit.”

After hanging up the phone, Yu An watched as Wen Xun immediately called Lin Huaichen to ask about the results of Yu An’s physical examination.

Lin Huaichen replied, “Everything is healthy, just a bit of malnutrition. Just like Mom said, this child’s mental threshold is very high, so don’t worry about him being contaminated by Xenogenics. I’ll tell you the rest when I get back.”

People who come into contact with Xenogenics face two possibilities: either they mutate and increase their mental threshold, thereby gaining abilities, or they are contaminated, lose their sanity, and become walking corpses.

Wen Xun knew that Lin Huaichen felt some things were inconvenient to say over the phone. Once he was certain that Yu An would not be contaminated by the Xenogenics at the Base, he packed his things to take him along.

The Base was to the east of Blue Moon Bay and was only a ten-minute walk away. Since it was Yu An’s first time, he was deeply awed by the massive structure.

The Base consisted of three buildings surrounded by towering walls that blocked the view from the outside. Snipers hidden in the shadows were constantly alert, guarding against external threats while simultaneously monitoring the internal situation.

Yu An was like a kitten in a strange environment, following closely behind Wen Xun. His small hand tightly held his father’s as his lake-blue eyes scanned his surroundings.

The staff guarding the entrance of the Base greeted Wen Xun respectfully as “Professor Wen,” then opened the heavy gates to let him in.

A guard noticed Yu An beside Wen Xun and stopped him. “Professor, is this child yours?”

The Base did not allow unauthorized personnel to enter, but some researchers who couldn’t balance family and work would occasionally bring their children. They just needed to apply for a pass for the child.

Wen Xun held a special status at the Base. After he nodded, there was no need for relevant documentation. The guard immediately applied for a pass and led Yu An to a computer to record his fingerprints and iris information.

Yu An’s small mouth was tightly pursed in nervousness. Once it was over, he said thank you to the guard and immediately ran back to Wen Xun’s side.

There were many security checks before entering the Base, but Wen Xun skipped these steps and carried Yu An into the interior. Yu An’s head rested on Wen Xun’s shoulder as he gazed at this highly modernized, large-scale laboratory with amazement.

Researchers hurried by with various documents in their hands. Everything was busy yet orderly. Any researcher who passed Yu An and Wen Xun would stop and greet him respectfully as “Professor Wen.”

Wen Xun nodded in acknowledgement but mostly remained silent. The researchers were used to his cold and indifferent demeanor; after greeting him, they went back to their own business.

“Papa, where are we going?” After getting into the elevator, Yu An tugged at Wen Xun’s clothes and asked timidly, “There are so many people here.”

Soland was constantly mindful of his duties. He was about to comfort Yu An—for instance, by killing everyone else in the elevator—but as soon as he poked his head out of the hat, the tiny octopus was poked back by Wen Xun’s finger, tumbling back inside.

Soland: “…”

As expected, this human is just as annoying as ever.

Wen Xun picked Yu An up and patted his back. “We’re going to see a sick brother in a bit. An-an, stay close to me.”

Yu An hugged Wen Xun’s neck and nodded obediently. “Being sick is very painful. I’ll be good and won’t disturb Brother.”

In fact, Yu An had never been sick in his life, but he had seen Grandma Liu, who looked after him, fall ill. She would have painful coughs and headaches, lose her appetite, and sometimes even vomit.

When he finally saw the sick brother, Yu An realized that it was not the same kind of illness Grandma Liu had had. Separated by a wall, Yu An saw the sick brother through a thick layer of glass.

The boy, several years older than him, was strapped to the bed with restraints. His entire body was shaking violently. Frost covered his hair and eyelashes, and ice and snow were continuously spreading from his body.

Researchers in heavy protective suits were frantically injecting him with various medicines, but as they drew near, the ice and snow would spread from their gloves to their arms.

Every few seconds, the researchers would swap out. Those who were replaced would step to the side and pour a liquid medicine over their arms; where the medicine met the white ice, white smoke would rise.

The moment Yu An stepped into the room, he felt a wave of cold. The little guy shrank back, rubbing his arms. Soland sneakily crawled onto his arm, spreading all his tentacles and “splatting” onto him in an attempt to keep him warm.

Wen Xun took off his jacket to cover Yu An and moved a small stool for him, placing it in a spot where he wouldn’t be in the way. “An-an, sit here and wait for me. I’ll take you home once I’m done working.”

Yu An nodded, his eyes following Wen Xun the entire time. Wen Xun exchanged a few words with an uncle wearing glasses, put on a white lab coat and medical gloves, and began to examine the boy’s condition.

A moment later, the temperature in the room began to rise. Yu An stared at Wen Xun’s back in a daze, his small mouth slightly pursed. He noticed that the aura around his father had suddenly become very strange.

At that moment, the uncle with glasses sat down beside him and smiled. “I’m sorry for calling your father here to help, but only your father’s [Absolute Immunity] can handle this situation.”

Fu Yunshu’s ice and snow were too lethal. Without Wen Xun, it was difficult for researchers to even stay near him for a few seconds.

Yu An looked at the uncle blankly and nodded half-comprehendingly. “Brother is sick; must save Brother.”

“Little guy, how old are you?”

“Three and a half.”

“Still a baby then.” Rong Shili’s tone was gentle, and a smile flashed in his eyes behind his glasses. “My name is Rong Shili. I’m your father’s childhood friend and classmate. What’s your name?”

Yu An nervously gripped his small hands. “I… My name is Yu An. Hello, Uncle Rong~”

Seeing the little guy’s ill-at-ease appearance, Rong Shili chuckled. “If I didn’t spend all my time with Wen Xun, I’d really think you were his biological child. You and your father are very similar.”

Especially this rejection of social interaction. However, while Yu An was socially anxious, Wen Xun was more of a misanthrope; he disliked socializing and found being alone much better.

Yu An felt a spark of joy in his heart upon hearing this. “I like Papa very much.”

With Wen Xun as a topic, Yu An and Rong Shili chatted for a bit, drawing much closer. Rong Shili looked at the boy, who seemed perfectly fine, and asked, “An-an, does your body feel uncomfortable anywhere?”

Yu An froze for a moment, then shook his head. “No.”

On the contrary, he felt very comfortable staying here. His whole body felt as if it were soaked in warm water, cozy and pleasant.

Rong Shili nodded, adjusted his glasses, and said no more.

With Wen Xun’s help, Fu Yunshu’s physical mutation was quickly suppressed. The researchers crowded around Wen Xun to ask about the cause of the incident, while the newly awakened Fu Yunshu sat alone on the hospital bed with his eyes lowered.

Fu Yunshu’s appearance was very striking, with dark brows and starry eyes; even at such a young age, one could see the handsome man he would become.

At this moment, the thin ice on his body was slowly melting, leaving him soaking wet. His short black hair clung to the side of his face, and his soaked shirt adhered to his lean body, faintly revealing the outline of his muscles.

Fu Yunshu lowered his gaze, sensing the mental power that had stabilized within his body. His fingernails dug into his palm. Why am I still alive? It clearly hurt so much, yet I still can’t die?

While Fu Yunshu was immersed in his thoughts, a soft, milky voice pulled him back to reality.

“Brother, do you want some warm water?”

A fair, small hand held a cup of warm water out to him. Fu Yunshu looked up and met a pair of beautiful lake-blue eyes. The stunning color, like the surface of a lake under the sun, left him dazed for a few seconds.

Yu An’s fear of strangers was hard to overcome; it had taken a long time for him to decide to bring water to this brother. But after he had stood there for so long, the brother remained motionless and didn’t take the water. Yu An suddenly felt a bit discouraged.

“Who are you?” Fu Yunshu’s voice was very hoarse, as if he hadn’t spoken for a long time. “I’ve never seen you before.”

After coming back to his senses, Fu Yunshu began to scrutinize Yu An. This was a child with an almost too-exquisite appearance, especially those beautiful eyes, which seemed to possess a magical quality that made one sink into them at a single glance.

Yu An was very nervous under his gaze and answered haltingly, “I… My name is Yu An. I came with Papa.”

“Who is your papa?”

Yu An pointed to Wen Xun in the center of the crowd.

A flash of surprise appeared in Fu Yunshu’s eyes as he looked at Wen Xun. His gaze flickered, and the corner of his mouth twitched. “Then you are quite fortunate…”

Back then, only Uncle Wen Xun had opposed his participation in the CAF Project. Looking at this little guy who was as soft and harmless as a white rabbit, he seemed to know what a child raised under the protection of family should look like.

Yu An was stunned by this sudden remark and nodded instinctively. “…I also think I am very fortunate.”
