Chapter 15: Iām Not a Human?
It was rare for Fu Yunshu to show his emotions, and even his psychological counseling teacher said he had a tendency toward autism. To have such a child proactively ask Yu An to stay, Wen Xun found it hard to refuse.
“An-an, do you want to play with Brother?” Wen Xun asked for Yu Anās opinion. “If you do, I can bring you here every day to play with him.”
This way, he could also end his vacation early and stop those old men from pestering him to return to work every day. It was beyond annoying.
Yu An was hesitant and looked at Fu Yunshu. Fu Yunshu instinctively grew nervous, waiting for Yu Anās answer.
“Then… Iāll play with Brother.” Yu An answered softly, then gave another reason. “I like it here.”
The Base was filled with countless Xenogenics. The intersecting, complex mental magnetic fields would make an ordinary person dizzy within moments, or even drive them insane on the spot. For a little Ushatos like Yu An, however, it was as comfortable as a fish returning to the sea.
Hearing Yu Anās answer, Fu Yunshu breathed a sigh of relief. His tensed body relaxed, and a faint smile appeared in his eyes as he promised, “I will take good care of you.”
Yu An shook his head and declined logically. “I can take good care of myself. I am very healthy. Brother is a patient; a patient must look after himself first.”
Fu Yunshu immediately resented his status as a patient, but he soon cheered up and persisted. “Then once Iām better, Iāll come to take care of you.”
A younger brother was an existence that needed protection. Fu Yunshu stubbornly placed Yu An within his circle of protection; he needed to become even stronger to better protect his brother.
With this goal, Fu Yunshu’s gaze became resolute, sweeping away his previous dejection. He pointed to the glass in the center of the wall and asked, “Uncle Wen Xun, can you remove another layer of glass?”
This specially made glass could block a Xenogenicās mental magnetic field. Currently, Fu Yunshu could not be fully exposed to the magnetic field of this A-rank Snow Snake. There were two layers of glass in the center, controlling the magnetic field at the C-rank level.
Wen Xun pondered. “No. Your current body cannot withstand a higher-level magnetic field. Weāll talk about this in a few months after your body has recovered.”
The Snow Snake next door woke up at that moment. As soon as he saw Fu Yunshu, he bared his teeth in hatred, rearing his upper body. His gold vertical pupils stared at him as if he wanted to swallow him whole.
Fu Yunshu was talking to Wen Xun and didn’t notice him at all. The Snow Snake irritably lashed his tail. Just then, a “little carrot head” took small steps and approached him.
The Snow Snake looked even better with his eyes open. Yu An stared at him in awe. Under the snakeās gaze, his cheeks turned red, and he greeted him haltingly, “H-hello.”
The Snow Snake scrutinized this bizarre cub. His mind dazed for a few seconds when his gaze met Yu Anās eyes, and he only recovered his senses after shaking his head. The Snow Snake blinked and wagged his tail as he approached Yu An.
High-level Xenogenics have the keenest perception of their own kind. This was a Xenogenic cub.
The Snow Snake couldn’t figure out what kind of Xenogenic Yu An was, but at any rate, he wasn’t a loathsome human. He chuckled and tapped on the glass. [Cub~ Come to me~]
Yu An also wanted to go over, but he couldn’t find the entrance. He looked around. “How do I get in…”
The next second, Yu An was picked up by Wen Xun. Wen Xun pressed Yu Anās small head against his chest and glared threateningly at the Snow Snake. “What are you trying to do?”
The Snow Snake was an A-rank Xenogenic, but in reality, he was still an adolescent snake baby. He was afraid of Wen Xun and timidly pointed the tip of his tail at Yu An. [Youāve got it wrong. This isnāt a human cub; heās one of ours…]
Yu An looked up suddenly, staring blankly at the Snow Snake.
He… heās not a human cub?
Wen Xun couldn’t understand the Snow Snakeās speech and shot him another glare. The Snow Snake froze into a straight line, his tail no longer wagging, and quickly shrank back into his small nest, curling himself into a ball once more.
Wen Xun commented condescendingly, “Coward.”
Yu Anās small head couldn’t handle such heavy information. He leaned dazed on Wen Xunās shoulder, his large lake-blue eyes staring aimlessly into the void.
A warm hand stroked the top of his head. Yu An raised his small head and pursed his lips. “Papa…”
What now? It seems Iām not human; Iāve become an ugly Xenogenic… No, wait, Xenogenics aren’t all ugly. The snake brother next door is very beautiful.
“Donāt be afraid. Papa is here.” Wen Xun kissed Yu Anās forehead and turned to Fu Yunshu. “Weāre leaving now. Weāll come back to see you tomorrow.”
Fu Yunshu nodded and glanced at the distracted Yu An. “Goodbye.”
On the way back, Yu An kept thinking about the problem of his species. The more he thought about it, the more he felt he was different from ordinary people. It seemed he really wasn’t human…
In his panic, Yu An hugged Wen Xunās neck tightly and called out in a tiny voice, “Papa…”
Wen Xun looked down at him. “Mhm, what is it?”
“Papa, that snake brother said Iām not a human cub; Iām one of theirs.” Yu Anās small head couldn’t figure it out, so he turned to the father he trusted most for help. “Am I a Xenogenic cub then?”
Wen Xunās pupils shrank, and his heart jolted violently. He and Yu An stared at each other. Although he had suspected it long ago, hearing Yu An state his non-human status so bluntly still gave him a shock.
Not only Wen Xun, but Soland was also so shocked his tentacles stood on end. He screamed: [Cub! How could you tell him such an important secret?! Aaaahhhā]
Yu Anās ears hurt from the noise. He clasped his hands together, covering Soland in his palm. “Stop making noise. Youāre being bad.”
Who exactly is being bad right now?! Soland was on the verge of going crazy. Those not of one’s own race must have a different heart. Yu An was surrounded by humans and was still an immature cub. If these people wanted to do something to him, he wouldn’t even have the ability to resist.
Soland watched Wen Xun warily. If he made any move to harm Yu An, Soland would kill him immediately and take the cub away.
Wen Xun took several deep breaths, waiting a few seconds before he could accept this fact. Whether it was Wen Yunās previous bizarre words or Yu Anās extraordinarily high mental threshold, everything pointed toward his non-human status.
“An… An-an.” Wen Xun swallowed his saliva. “Then, do you know what kind of Xenogenic you are?”
Hearing this question, Soland quietly stretched his body, his small tentacles wagging proudly. They were Ushatosāthe long-lived species at the very top of the food chain.
Worship us, human.
“I donāt know.” The lone seedling of the Ushatos bit his finger. Yu An racked his brain to remember. “Maybe a little pig? Grandma said Iām always sleeping, a little pig that canāt be woken up.”
Soland: “…”
F*ck!
The concern in Wen Xunās heart regarding Yu Anās status vanished instantly. His eyes were full of smiles, and he couldn’t help but pinch Yu Anās small nose, joking, “Then maybe you really are a little pig.”
Yu An happily accepted his identity as a little pig Xenogenic. His only concern was one thing. “Papa, am I ugly?”
Wen Xun was stunned. “Not ugly. Our An-an is very beautiful.”
Yu Anās appearance was as far from ugly as could be. His features were exquisite and lovely, especially those large lake-blue eyes that could make one sink into them. After this period, his cheeks had grown a bit of baby fat, making him look just like a high-end doll in a shop window.
Gaining Wen Xunās affirmation of his looks, Yu An no longer worried about anything else, nuzzling affectionately against Wen Xunās neck. He took Soland from his shoulder and began playing with his small tentacles.
In the afternoon, Lin Huaichen came home with the strawberry cake. The strawberry cake Yu An had been longing for was back, and he happily kissed Lin Huaichenās cheek. “Thank you, Papa~”
The little guy drank milk every day and had a sweet, milky scent on him. Lin Huaichen picked Yu An up and, like one would nuzzle a cat, buried his head in the boy’s small stomach and rubbed against it.
When his ticklish spots were touched, Yu An couldn’t stop laughing, calling out repeatedly, “Papa, Papa, it tickles!”
Lin Huaichen was unmoved, addicted to his “child-sniffing.” Left with no choice, Yu An turned to Wen Xun for help.
The little guy laughed until a faint mist appeared in his eyes. His lake-blue eyes were wet as he opened his arms to Wen Xun, acting spoiled and begging for a hug. “Papa, hold me~”
Wen Xun chuckled and gave Lin Huaichen a light knock on the back of the head, appearing quite speechless. “Fine, fine. Next time An-an sees you, heāll run away. Let’s see what you do then.”
Only then did Lin Huaichen let little Yu An go. Yu An happily went to eat his cake. He gave both Wen Xun and Lin Huaichen a bite with his spoon, then sat on his chair with the rest to eat slowly.
Sweets were something no child could resist. Yu An radiated an aura of delight; as he ate his cake, he contentedly swung his legs. When he ate a piece of strawberry, he happily wiggled his bodyāhe couldn’t have been happier.
Lin Huaichen remarked with feeling, “Children are truly easy to satisfy. A piece of cake can keep them happy for so long. Unlike us adults, where the happiest thing is to play games exclusive to adults…”
He fixed an aggressive gaze on Wen Xun, his hand moving improperly to Wen Xunās waist while half his body leaned on Wen Xunās shoulder. His deep, husky voice echoed in Wen Xunās ear, “Baby, can we have some fun tonight?”
“No.” Wen Xun slapped his hand away and stole a glance at Yu An. Once certain he hadn’t noticed, he pulled Lin Huaichen and hurried toward the bedroom. “Come with me.”
Lin Huaichen didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation. After Wen Xun locked the door, he consciously took off his suit jacket and lay on the bed. “Baby, your heart says one thing but your mouth says another. You just rejected me, but I understand. Come on, come on. We’ll be quiet, and An-an won’t know.”
“Are you a Teddy?” Wen Xun picked up a pillow and threw it at him, then buttoned up his shirt and glared. “Iām talking about something serious. Stop messing around.”
Lin Huaichen let out a sigh of disappointment and gave a listless “OK” sign.
Wen Xun, sweeping away the calm and logic he showed in front of Yu An, told Lin Huaichen what had happened at his fastest speaking speed. He paced around the room anxiously. “…What do we do now? The Base is indiscriminately hostile toward Xenogenics, and itās still unclear what specific species An-an is. Those old fogies definitely wonāt tolerate this child.”
Lin Huaichen sat up, pulled Wen Xun to him, and held him in his arms, kissing his forehead soothingly. “Don’t panic. Yu Anās physical data has already been destroyed by me. As long as we don’t say anything, he is just an ordinary human child.”
Wen Xunās eyes widened in surprise. “You already knew?”
Lin Huaichen smiled, showing a reliable expression of having everything under control. “I had a suspicion from the first moment I saw the child. When I got his physical report, I was certain he was a Xenogenic cub. Baby, our luck is truly extraordinary.”
In the vast sea of people, they had decided to raise a child and ended up adopting a Xenogenic child. Furthermore, Yu An had even more special characteristics. Lin Huaichen had already made up his mind to hide Yu Anās identity.
“According to the examination report, An-anās genes can camouflage themselves. His current target of imitation is us, so his physical examination shows an ordinary human, while his mental threshold can reach our S-rank. As long as we don’t let An-an undergo a detailed physical examination, no one will find anything unusual.”
Lin Huaichen and Wen Xun were among the people with the highest authority. If they intended to hide it, they could certainly stall the Base for a while. Perhaps in the future, the Base’s indiscriminate hatred toward Xenogenics would soften.
Yu An was a good child; there was no doubt about that. Letting him grow up among humans might lead to even more possibilities in the future. The sword-drawn, bow-bent tension between Xenogenics and humans might even change because of it.
Lin Huaichen felt a headache at the thought of Yu Anās mimicry ability and rubbed the bridge of his nose. “For now, let’s suppress our own ranks. Having an S-rank mental magnetic field for a child is too exaggerated.”
Wen Xun nodded. “Then let’s use Ling Xingcheng as a standard and lower the rank to B-rank. No, C-rank. I can’t let the old men at the Base fight us for the child.”
If the old men at the Base knew there was another three-year-old with a B-rank mental magnetic field, they would surely bring their old faces over to try and snatch the child.
At that time, theyād have to hide Yu Anās identity while thinking of various reasons to decline the old men; Wen Xun felt it would be exhausting just thinking about it.
