【112】Meeting the Parents
Although Jiang Yan had repeatedly emphasized to Wen Ran that he didn’t need to be so nervous and that his parents were very easy to get along with, on the night before meeting the parents, Wen Ran was still too nervous to sleep.
He locked himself in the room. Even when Wen Little Flower came over with a small butterfly toy to play, he had no interest.
Wen Little Flower had never received such cold treatment. Disbelieving, it ran to Wen Ran’s side, scrambling up onto his lap with its short legs.
It rubbed its cat head against Wen Ran’s slender hand.
But Wen Ran picked it up with one hand and tossed it aside. “Little Flower be good, Big Brother can’t attend to you right now.”
Wen Little Flower: “……”
Wen Ran kept scrolling through guides online: What to watch out for when visiting a boyfriend’s house for the first time, and How to win the favor of the in-laws.
Wen Ran memorized several highly-upvoted points before going to sleep.
If he hadn’t been afraid of being in bad shape the next day, he would have pulled an all-nighter.
Wen Ran woke up very early the next morning. He rummaged through clothes everywhere, finally choosing to wear a white down jacket to look a bit more obedient.
He tugged nervously at Jiang Yan’s sleeve. “Jiang Yan, do you think I need to get my hair done?”
Jiang Yan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Your hairstyle right now is fine.”
“But, will your mom and dad like it?”
Jiang Yan: “You’re going to meet the parents, not auditioning for the male lead.”
Wen Ran: “……”
“Don’t be so nervous, Ran Ran,” Jiang Yan scraped his nose. “If Brother dares to take you home, it means I’ve paved the road for you. My parents are pretty nice people.”
This was Wen Ran’s first time at Jiang Yan’s home. He was shocked as soon as he reached the entrance.
Jiang Yan’s house was actually this big.
He knew Jiang Yan was rich, a second-generation wealthy kid, but he didn’t expect him to be this rich. Just this house alone represented wealth that many people couldn’t earn in a lifetime. Wen Ran always thought WK’s accommodation was already very good, but compared to Jiang Yan’s home, it wasn’t worth mentioning.
He had seen videos of luxury mansions online, but even those weren’t on the scale of Jiang Yan’s home.
But he wasn’t in the mood to look at these things right now.
Because the parents inside were what he was most worried about.
Wen Ran walked slowly. The closer he got, the more nervous he became, unsure of what attitude he should adopt to face Jiang Yan’s parents so they could feel at ease handing their son over to him.
Jiang Yan saw his anxiety and reached out to squeeze Wen Ran’s fingers. “Don’t be afraid, Brother is with you.”
Wen Ran gave Jiang Yan a look full of complex emotions, trying hard to lower his heart rate.
Jiang Yan deliberately rang the doorbell. “Dad, Mom, I’m back.”
Father Jiang and Mother Jiang had been waiting inside for a long time. Hearing the sound, they immediately opened the door.
Only then did Wen Ran see the two of them. Mother Jiang looked gentle and elegant, while Father Jiang was tall and imposing.
Mother Jiang spoke with a smile, “This must be Ran Ran, right?”
Wen Ran jolted and hurriedly greeted them. “Hello Uncle, hello Auntie. I am Wen Ran, Jiang Yan’s boyfriend.”
Mother Jiang took Wen Ran’s hand and pulled him inside. “Come, come in quickly.”
Jiang Yan was still holding things. Seeing Father Jiang stealing glances at him, he simply walked over and put the items in his father’s hands. “Dad, for you.”
“This is fruit. Put it in the fridge, and bring me a slice of watermelon while you’re at it.”
Father Jiang: “?”
He really wanted to explode, looking inside, he suppressed his anger. “You don’t come back once a year, and when you do, you order me to serve you?!”
“How can you call it serving me?” Jiang Yan hushed him. “Ran Ran is inside, I have to go in first.”
“Otherwise, I’m not at ease leaving him alone.”
“What are you not at ease about?” Father Jiang clenched his fists. “Can your mom eat him?”
angrily pointing a finger at Jiang Yan, his face full of disappointment that iron wouldn’t turn into steel. “Don’t I know what kind of virtue that Ran Ran has? Put on an act twice and he’s really obedient? Look at your worthless appearance, how did I give birth to such a losing investment like you!”
Jiang Yan knew his dad always had a sharp tongue but a soft heart; otherwise, he wouldn’t have kept his volume so controlled. It was like two deskmates whispering during class—such a small voice paired with rich expressions looked particularly comical.
But Jiang Yan was interested in Father Jiang’s words. “What kind of virtue does he have? Isn’t this your first time meeting Ran Ran?”
“Hmph!” Father Jiang exhaled through his nose, flicking his sleeve angrily. “Didn’t you tell me to go serve you fruit?”
“I’m going now.”
Jiang Yan quickly followed him. “Dad, look at you, keeping me in suspense.”
Seeing Jiang Yan following him, Father Jiang curled his lip. “Aren’t you gamers public figures too? It’s not like I don’t use the internet.”
“WK.Dawn, the League’s famous toxic tumor. One person, one keyboard, spraying ten to twenty people, and he loves acting as other people’s elder.”
Jiang Yan: “……”
Jiang Yan: “Dad, where did you hear all this? Ran Ran isn’t like that. He’s usually really obedient.”
Father Jiang opened the fridge, stored the box of fruit, took out a piece of watermelon, and snorted coldly. “Do you want to check his livestream fan guardian list?”
Jiang Yan was shocked. “No way, are you in the top three?”
“Not that high.” Father Jiang threw the watermelon into Jiang Yan’s arms. “Top thirty.”
“Not bad, Dad. You’re getting more and more trendy, watching Ran Ran’s stream and donating.” Jiang Yan was surprised. “To actually rank in the top thirty… his Little Roses are very rich.”
“It hasn’t been long since I came back last time, and you’re already top thirty.”
Actually, Father Jiang initially didn’t understand these things. But once, while investigating Wen Ran’s stream, a streamer happened to be mocking Wen Ran sarcastically, saying his fans were irrational and that he had no shame living off the blood of young girls’ donations.
No wonder a person like that lives like an orphan.
Although the two weren’t married yet, Jiang Yan had committed to him. He counted as half a family member. Father Jiang knew a bit about Wen Ran’s family situation; the kid hadn’t had it easy. He wasn’t willing to let others insult Wen Ran like that.
So that night, he furiously dropped over a hundred thousand, making the other guy die of envy.
He even sent a bullet comment: “Who said it’s all little girls? I’m over fifty this year, and I just like this kid.”
The other guy was later banned for inciting conflict, and Father Jiang didn’t donate again.
Hearing this, Jiang Yan clicked his tongue in wonder. Of all people to provoke, he provoked a CEO worth billions.
“I just wanted to say, I’ve watched his stream,” Father Jiang said. “Of course I know what he’s like in the chat room.”
Jiang Yan looked at him with a smile. “Dad, I actually think you and Ran Ran have the same virtue.”
Father Jiang: “?”
“Equally tsundere.”
Father Jiang: “……”
Outside, Mother Jiang had already chatted a bit with Wen Ran. Of course, what she cared about most was how Wen Ran and Jiang Yan got together.
Even if you lent Wen Ran ten guts, he wouldn’t dare tell them that he and Jiang Yan slept together first and then slowly got together.
He could only add some adaptations based on facts. “I was a fan of Jiang Yan. Before, I encountered some difficulties, and he helped me, so we became familiar. Later, we slowly got together.”
“Oh, is that so?” Mother Jiang nodded, sighing. “You are in the team, still teammates, right?”
“Are you worried it will affect the matches?” Wen Ran was scared and quickly explained, “It won’t. Usually, at the base, we prioritize the matches. Competitions and training always come first; it won’t affect each other’s training.”
“I didn’t mean that, Ran Ran, don’t get agitated.” Mother Jiang was also making awkward small talk. “Auntie just wanted to say, being able to look after each other is quite nice.”
“Oh, oh.” Wen Ran fell silent after speaking. He wasn’t good at socializing to begin with, and his friends were all industry insiders. Now, being with his partner’s parents, the magnetic field felt wrong.
“I don’t know what Jiang Yan and Old Jiang are doing. It’s quite cold outside, come have some soup first. Auntie stewed it.”
Wen Ran hurried to help. “Thank you, Auntie. I’ll help you serve it.”
When Jiang Yan and Father Jiang walked out, Mother Jiang had just finished serving the soup and called them over to drink.
“Jiang Yan, eating watermelon in such cold weather? Come drink some soup first.”
Seeing Jiang Yan was like seeing a savior for Wen Ran. He sat next to him like a little quail.
After burying his head and drinking a few mouthfuls, he realized belatedly that he should praise Mother Jiang.
He mustered his courage and said to Mother Jiang, “This tortoise soup is really good.” (Note: Wen Ran uses “Wangba”, a colloquial term for turtle/tortoise that is often used in insults like “bastard”).
Mother Jiang’s smile froze on her face: “……”
Who is he calling a bastard?
Wen Ran shut his mouth in embarrassment and looked at Jiang Yan for help.
Sensing the atmosphere was a bit off, Jiang Yan quickly smoothed things over. “Ran Ran means, the soup made from this turtle is really great.”
“My mom’s skill in making this is superb.”
Only then did Mother Jiang sigh in relief and put her smile back on. “Then if Ran Ran likes it, drink more.”
She was nervous too. After all, it was her first time meeting her son’s partner, and it was a man.
“Ran Ran isn’t very old. Where did you go to school before playing professionally?”
Jiang Yan never expected the conversation to unfold like this. He had previously briefed his mom not to ask Ran Ran about family or education. Mother Jiang clearly realized it too and sent him a gaze asking for help.
It really wasn’t intentional, it just slipped out.
“Ran Ran went to youth training at 16,” Jiang Yan spoke up. “He didn’t take the college entrance exam back then.”
“Oh, oh, went at 16, so amazing.”
Mother Jiang quickly shifted the topic. “Jiang Yan, Ran Ran, I heard you are going to play in some World Championship. What is that?”
Finally, they reached a topic they were good at. “It’s playing against foreign teams, representing the country.”
“Ran Ran and I both plan to sign up.”
“Dad, now you can really see me winning glory for the country.”
Hearing “winning glory for the country,” Father Jiang rarely didn’t choke Jiang Yan. “You’d better be.”
“However, I have a friend who seems to be busy with World Championship matters recently.”
Jiang Yan was curious. “You know that kind of friend?”
“His name is Niu Dehui. He doesn’t develop his career here, so you haven’t met him. It’s normal not to know.” Father Jiang said, “But he’s coming in a few days. You guys can meet then; maybe you’ll have topics to chat about.”
Wen Ran and Jiang Yan looked at each other. Isn’t this Niu Dehui… Chairman Niu?
To lighten the atmosphere, Father Jiang decided to tell his friend’s matter as a joke. “Old Niu was chatting with me two days ago. He said he was just newly appointed when a little bastard threw a leather shoe in his face. The guy didn’t give him any face and mocked him for playing badly. Look at him, over fifty years old, getting angered like that by a nineteen-year-old bastard kid.”
Nineteen-year-old bastard kid Wen Ran: “……”
