Chapter 81: Wrapped
Early the next morning, Su Tang and Ye Chiyu got into the car to head to the set. Chu Xiaoyun happened to see Su Tang getting into the car from downstairs. Without thinking, he walked over and said, “Xiao Su, let’s just share a car.”
Su Tang smiled and agreed. “Director Chu, you can sit in the front.”
“Eh?”
Chu Xiaoyun was stunned. He thought to himself that after nearly two months of collaboration, was Xiao Su still being so distant? Why did they have to sit in the front and back separately?
Su Tang shifted his head back a little. A somewhat familiar-looking man sitting next to him calmly looked at Chu Xiaoyun and said, “Hello.”
Chu Xiaoyun: “…”
It turned out that once Xiao Su’s Alpha arrived, the back seat was full.
The production crew had limited resources, so Chu Xiaoyun didn’t act pretentious. He readily sat in the passenger seat. The driver knew him and laughed as he remarked, “Director Chu, you were startled by Xiao Su too, right? I was stunned when he brought this gentleman along. He’s tall, has long legs, and is so handsome—I thought another big star had arrived.”
“You flatter me.”
Ye Chiyu remained expressionless, while Su Tang, hearing the driver’s words, began to feel a small sense of pride in his heart.
Noticing the change in the little guy’s expression, Ye Chiyu let out a soft chuckle. He took Su Tang’s hand and held it in his palm. Their fingers rubbed against each other where others couldn’t see, their affection flowing like an undercurrent.
Not noticing the small movements of the two in the back, Chu Xiaoyun glanced at the man sitting next to Su Tang through the rearview mirror. He prided himself on having an extraordinary memory. As he watched, he finally realized why this man looked so familiar.
A few years ago, the Ye Group had held a banquet. His friend had a deep relationship with the Ye family and thought that as a filmmaker, it would be good for him to interact with the financial world to pull in investments for his films, so he had brought him along.
It was at that banquet that he had seen Ye Chiyu, who had just taken over the Ye Group and was already famous in the industry. However, Ye Chiyu had only stayed at the banquet for a short time and hadn’t spoken, so Chu Xiaoyun only had a slight impression.
Chu Xiaoyun didn’t consider himself a social climber. Even though he knew Ye Chiyu’s identity, he didn’t lower his posture and naturally discussed the final scene Su Tang was about to film.
One-on-one guidance from Chu Xiaoyun himself was a rare opportunity. Su Tang listened very intently, carefully pondering the finer emotional nuances of his character, Chen Nuo.
Upon arriving at the set, Ye Chiyu’s presence naturally attracted a lot of attention. Whenever someone asked, Ye Chiyu would take the initiative to answer that he was Su Tang’s husband, so Su Tang didn’t even need to speak.
Fortunately, there wasn’t much overlap between the entertainment circle and the top figures of the business world. Ye Chiyu went unrecognized the whole time. Instead, many were surprised that Su Tang’s non-celebrity Alpha was so handsome. The couple walking together looked like a moving landscape.
With Mr. Ye’s company, Su Tang seemed to enter his “state” even faster. While the makeup artist was still applying his makeup, Su Tang had already completely entered the world of Chen Nuo. His gaze was as fierce as a wolf cub’s, yet he possessed the softest and most selfless heart in the world.
This was the first time Ye Chiyu had seen his little Omega like this. He never took his eyes off the little guy for even a second, wanting to engrave every side of his Tangtang deep into his mind.
The explosions and fire props on site were all ready. The safety officer checked the props once more for compliance. Only after everything was verified did they let the actors, who had been waiting, take their positions.
Su Tang was wearing a dirty, tattered undershirt whose original color was unrecognizable. Grime, mud, and the blood from having just killed the son of the drug cartel leader were mixed together.
A long gash had been cut across his face during the intense fight. At first, the blood wouldn’t stop, but later, the blood flowing from the wound mixed with the dust in the air and coagulated on his face.
The director shouted “Action,” and Su Tang immediately entered the role.
“Brother, I’ll be able to go home in a while. When I get home, I want to eat the braised pork you make.”
During the two years Chen Nuo had been an undercover agent living a dangerous life at the border, Chen Chen—who always treated him like a real younger brother—had been waiting for him at home. Two years ago, Chen Nuo had made a single phone call saying he was going on a mission, and then he lost contact with Chen Chen.
No one would have thought that two years later, the first phone call between the brothers would be a final farewell.
“Alright, you brat finally knows to come home,” Chen Chen’s voice on the other end of the line was trembling with joy. “Which day are you coming back? What time? Brother will buy a lot of meat in advance to make sure you eat until you’re stuffed.”
“Soon. Very soon.”
The sun-darkened Chen Nuo showed a row of white teeth when he smiled. Looking at the raging sea of fire before him, his eyes filled with tears, as if the person waiting for him was Chen Chen, who would be sitting under the big tree at their doorstep, fanning himself and shouting that it was deathly hot, telling him to hurry home and eat a popsicle.
He hung up his last call with his brother, backed up everything he had prepared for his colleagues in the narcotics intelligence department once more, and then fearlessly charged into the sea of fire.
This was a fire man-made by the criminal syndicate to destroy evidence. Gasoline was spilled everywhere on the ground, and oil drums could explode at any moment, but Chen Nuo was not afraid.
He braved the high heat and smoke to rush into rooms filled with fire. The skin on his body was already scorched by the high temperature. He moved quickly to retrieve a secret file bag he had long ago hidden and wrapped in fireproof and waterproof material, clutching it tightly to his chest as he ran straight out.
The interior of the building was a wooden structure. Chen Nuo was pinned down by a falling beam. His respiratory tract and lungs were scorched by the hot smoke, making him unable to even scream in pain. He fought with all his might to protect the documents as he crawled out and continued to run with a limp.
He heard the familiar sound of police sirens. His vision was filled with thick smoke. In such a harsh environment, his physical strength had long since been exhausted, and his legs were moving almost mechanically, driven only by his willpower.
When he was about to reach the open area downstairs, a member of the drug cartel, who had completely lost his mind and was not afraid of being caught by the police, turned back halfway. Across the sea of fire, he shouted at Chen Nuo, “Traitor! Police dog!”
Chen Nuo couldn’t hear anything. His eyes were also scorched, and he couldn’t see anything clearly. When the clothes on his body caught fire, they stuck to his already battered body. There was only one voice in his heart: protect the information and let his colleagues bring the criminals to justice.
A police officer saw Chen Nuo and also noticed the criminal who had turned back. Seeing the other party holding a gun, the officer immediately pulled his own gun to stop him.
But it was too late. The yellow-toothed criminal pulled the trigger without hesitation, firing at Chen Nuo, who was only holding on by a final thread of conviction and hadn’t yet fallen.
“Bang—”
Two gunshots rang out simultaneously. Chen Nuo’s mind suddenly went blank. He was likely already numb from pain, so even though his heart was directly pierced by a bullet, it didn’t cause much of a reaction.
In the final moment of his life, he hugged that small file to his chest and fell into the sea of fire.
Narcotics police officer Chen Nuo, in the year he decided to go undercover, was still a university student at the police academy.
He died at the age of twenty-three.
