Chapter 78: Successful Escape; “Quite Capable”
“Stop right there.”
Just as Lu Xunye stepped out of the main door, a low male voice rang out from behind him without warning, followed by the sound of approaching footsteps.
“They’ve already gone to get the stretcher. Why are you out here?”
Lu Xunye caught a glimpse of the man’s long shadow on the ground and the baton he was holding. He didn’t turn around. He toyed with his bangs, letting the long strands cover his eyes.
He lowered his voice purposefully and spoke carefully.
“There’s no signal inside. I need to contact the hospital ahead of time to explain the patient’s condition so they can prepare… The patient is in critical condition.”
It was unclear if the man believed him. Through the shadow, Lu Xunye saw the man raise his hand, hovering it over his shoulder.
Lu Xunye shifted his stance, his arm muscles tensing, his palm already curled into a fist.
At the same time, the moment the man’s hand began to descend, a sound came through his earpiece.
The man casually told Lu Xunye to go ahead, then pressed his earpiece as he turned back toward the door. “Repeat that, what happened to the person?”
Before he could finish the question, a heavy object hit the ground with a loud thud, kicking up a cloud of dust.
The black earpiece, reflecting a sliver of sunlight, was crushed into the dirt by a shoe. The faint sound of static was drowned out before falling silent.
Lu Xunye bent down and snatched the baton from the unconscious man’s grip, propping it over his shoulder.
He looked up at the System, which was hovering with its hands on its hips, and gave a middle finger to the red-light-flashing security camera on the pillar by the gate.
The System was speechless. [Still playing? People are coming!]
…
A sedan drove steadily along the mountain road. As it passed a small path, the driver was about to turn when he saw an ambulance speed past toward the distant villa.
He frowned, slowing down. Just as his hand touched the car keys, a knock came from the side window. The man was forced to stop and look over.
Outside the window stood a man in a black suit jacket over a white shirt. He was hunched over, tapping on the glass. Only a pair of eyes were visible beneath his disheveled hair and mask.
Seeing the driver look over, the person frantically pointed toward the ambulance.
The man had seen it. Seeing the “doctor’s” anxious state, and noticing the unique logo on the half-visible baton the person was holding against the glass, he snapped back to reality.
He had been sent out to track someone and had only just returned. He had also just finished a temporary task for his employer and hadn’t had time to report back for his final payment.
This was his last job before retirement. He was the person who least wanted any trouble.
He couldn’t help but think: Did the hostage escape and injure someone?
The man’s expression grew serious. Without suspicion, he rolled down the window, his first thought being to chase the escapee. “Get in.”
The moment he unlocked the doors, the person hopped into the back seat with incredible speed.
Because there was “cargo” in the trunk, the man’s grip on the steering wheel tightened involuntarily. He got straight to the point: “The person ran? In which direction?”
He was answered with silence. Almost immediately, the man realized something was wrong.
Through the rearview mirror, he saw the hem of a white coat poking out from under the black suit jacket, stained with blood.
His eyes snapped up to meet Lu Xunye’s provocative gaze in the mirror, just as the youth pulled off his mask.
Before the man could reach for the gun hidden under his seat, his consciousness faded, and he passed out.
Lu Xunye tossed a medicine bottle up and caught it, looking thoughtfully at the label before poking the slumped man’s shoulder. “Tsk, looks like you’ve done a lot of bad things too.”
The System acted smug, looking like it wanted praise.
[Shouldn’t you thank me? If I hadn’t helped you block the surveillance signals, you wouldn’t have even made it out of the villa, let alone now. You probably would have been drugged unconscious too.]
Lu Xunye hummed a couple of times, giving a perfunctory, “Yeah, yeah, thank you, thank you.”
The ambulance had just stopped in front of the villa. Several people got out to help the unconscious, jacketless bodyguard on the ground.
At the same time, a car sped out from the villa, chasing after Lu Xunye.
“They’re fast.”
Lu Xunye raised an eyebrow. He climbed from the back seat to the driver’s seat, kicked the previous driver out of the car, and then froze.
As the pursuers were gaining on him, the System hopped around anxiously. [Drive!]
Lu Xunye said somewhat awkwardly, “…I don’t know how.”
[Then why did you steal the car?! You’re wasting time!] The System had a headache and quickly searched its database for a driving tutorial.
What followed was a scene that was both frantic and bizarrely calm.
System: [Step on the brake.]
Lu Xunye looked down at his feet. “Which one?”
System: [The left one.]
Lu Xunye: “Got it.”
[After starting it, step on the gas.] The System flipped through its electronic manual, stealing a glance at Lu Xunye and sighing. [Forget it, just floor it in a bit.]
A moment later, the car shot forward like a cannonball. Amidst the screams of both man and System, the car swerved wildly and began to “chase” the black car in front of it.
In the passenger seat of the black car, a man gripped his seatbelt and screamed at the driver, “Holy sh*t, he’s crazy! Get out of the way, he wants to take us both down!”
The driver frowned. “He’ll likely head for the city. Notify the others to intercept him before he reaches the highway.”
As he spoke, he swerved hard. As the car veered left off the path and onto the grass, the car charging at them brushed past.
The two men survived the encounter, their backs drenched in cold sweat.
…
A tiny white car twisted and turned through the narrow, steep mountain roads, with several cars in hot pursuit. The System stood on the steering wheel, using its feet to steer, with imaginary sweat pouring down its head.
“The cliff! The cliff!” Lu Xunye’s eyes were wide as he gripped the handle on the roof.
Given the speed of the pursuit, if they braked now, they would likely be rear-ended and pushed off the cliff before they could stop.
Lu Xunye stared at the mountain wall at the upcoming turn and grew strangely calm. He glanced at the side mirror. Just as the front of the car was about to smash through the guardrail and fly into the abyss…
Lu Xunye didn’t know where the confidence came from. He suddenly grabbed the wheel and yanked it hard at the sharpest point of the turn.
The car drifted. It scraped against the guardrail and slammed its side into the mountain wall. Sparks flew, and a thick smell of smoke poured through the window.
The System’s tiny body, which had been clinging to the wheel like an unfortunate hamster in a running wheel, let out a scream as it was flung away.
The car performed a perfect drift. The rear wheels briefly left the ground as it smashed a section of the guardrail, but Lu Xunye floored the gas and cleared the sharp turn.
The System was stunned. [I thought you said you couldn’t drive!]
Lu Xunye was even more surprised. He stared blankly at his hands. The actions hadn’t even been processed by his brain—he actually… knew how to drive?
Now wasn’t the time for that. He blinked and asked, “Are they still chasing?”
[Let me see.] The System pulled up its panel and said happily, [No! They didn’t see the turn. They’re stuck at the broken guardrail. One car was going too fast and the front end is hanging over the edge! It’s blocking the road, and they’re busy rescuing them. They won’t catch up anytime soon.]
Perhaps because his nerves were stretched too thin, Lu Xunye didn’t relax.
He could hear a faint thumping sound coming from the back of the car. He paused and asked the System, “Did you hear something?”
Before the System could respond, he focused back on the navigation screen. “Forget it, just keep an eye out for me.”
Unfortunately, Lu Xunye’s luck in escaping the lion’s den ran out as soon as he entered the city.
Due to the pursuit, he couldn’t dodge in time and crashed head-first into a green belt, snapping a young tree.
He was dazed by the deployed airbag, and he could feel warm liquid trickling down his forehead.
He slumped over the steering wheel, his heavy eyelids barely staying open. Outside the window, a figure blocked the sunlight, casting a dark shadow over him.
The voice of a young man drifted in through the cracked glass: “Quite capable. You even found an accomplice to meet you in the city. You really dare to kidnap anyone.”
“Smash it.”
As the command fell, the sound of glass shattering exploded in Lu Xunye’s ears. Shards rained down on him. The already battered door was ripped off and thrown aside with a thud.
He was roughly dragged out. As soon as he moved, a powerful force twisted his arm behind his back.
“Don’t play dead. Who sent you?”
Lu Xunye’s head was ringing. His head hung low. The youth who had ordered the door to be smashed walked into his field of vision.
The voice was refined, and the tone was casual, yet filled with pressure: “Don’t want to talk? Don’t dare to talk? Then let me ask differently. Is the person behind you…”
“…related to the Shen family bankruptcy four years ago, the car accident of the Shen couple, and the driver’s death?”
Su Zhuo forcibly lifted Lu Xunye’s face. The moment he saw him, he froze. “Lu Xunye?!”
Lu Xunye’s ears were buzzing. In his blurred vision, he heard someone call his name and instinctively looked up. The person looked a bit familiar… who?
Snapping out of it, Su Zhuo’s expression turned complex. “Let him go.”
Once released, Lu Xunye stumbled and was caught by Su Zhuo.
“President Su, President Shen has been found!” An abrupt shout interrupted them.
“What happened?!” Su Zhuo saw his subordinates carrying a burlap sack and a semiconscious person. Before he could step forward, his shoulder grew heavy.
He looked down in surprise. Lu Xunye had passed out.
“…”
The subordinates hesitated. “President Su… what should we do?”
“Why are you standing there? Get them to the hospital!”
“Oh! Yes, sir!”
Lu Xunye clutched the blanket and took a sharp breath, waking up with a start. He looked around and jumped out of bed.
Damn, was I caught again?
Seeing the room was empty, he put on his shoes and ran, completely missing the System sleeping soundly on the edge of the bed.
Once outside, he realized he was in a hospital. He was still a bit dizzy from just waking up, so he stumbled along the wall, keeping his head down.
Despite his attempts to avoid the crowd, an accident still happened.
He bumped into someone. A box of medicine fell at his feet. Reflexively, Lu Xunye caught the person before they could fall. Seeing their face, he froze. “You are…”
The other person was equally surprised. “Mr. Lu? You’re alive!”
“…” Lu Xunye gave a dry laugh. He stepped back, picked up the medicine, and handed it over. “Yours.”
“Was it Si Jinyan who found you?” The person took the medicine and immediately realized they had said something wrong. They hurriedly corrected themselves, “Oh, no. I just heard about your disappearance. Seeing you’re fine, I suppose Young Master Shen can rest easy now.”
Lu Xunye looked at the pale, thin man before him. He looked like a paper doll with bloodless lips.
Combining the man’s words, he asked tentatively, “Jian Luoqing?”
