Chapter 79: The Kindhearted White Moonlight; “Iâm Actually an Honest Man”… part 1
“So, Mr. Lu didn’t recognize me.”
Jian Luoqing gave a faint smile, nodding in understanding. “It’s true, we’ve only met a few times.”
“…”
Seeing him reminded Lu Xunye of all those unspeakable plots of love, hate, and revenge.
He awkwardly rubbed his hands together, suddenly changing the subject. “Is your health any better now?”
Even if that hidden “Death of the White Moonlight” plot didn’t refer to him… if things followed the original storyline, judging by the man’s complexion, he probably wouldn’t live much longer.
Lu Xunye wondered if asking this right now made him seem a bit like he was looking for a fight.
Jian Luoqing didnât answer. Instead, he asked about something else.
“I heard that some time ago, Mr. Lu happened to visit Qinghu Island. Could you tell me what it’s like there now?”
In the park below the hospital, many patients in hospital gowns were moving about, supported by their families, so Jian Luoqingâs attire didn’t stand out.
Aside from their first meetingâwhere Lu Xunye, predisposed to think Jian Luoqing was there to cause trouble, hadn’t been very welcomingâthe two could neither be called familiar nor enemies.
“So, the Jian family that invested in Qinghu Island a few years ago… that was your family?”
“Don’t worry, they don’t blame you for suddenly stopping the investment. Most of the people there are quite satisfied with their lives now.”
Lu Xunye fiddled with the grass in the flowerbed, pulling his right leg back from the knee-high porcelain ledge. He turned around, leaning his lower back against the edge of the flowerbed, and looked down at the youth on the bench beside him.
“So, the boy saved by the villagers when they went out to sea was indeed Si Jinyan, and your family was the one who took him away later?”
Jian Luoqing showed no surprise, admitting frankly: “Yes.”
“However, we didn’t know he was a child of the Si family at first. As for the investment, it was because I lived there for a few years as a child. The environment was suitable for recuperation. Later, some accidents happened in my family, so the development was shelved. Speaking of which, I feel quite sorry for the people there.”
He squeezed the medicine box, his voice growing softer and thinner. “I hope to have the chance to visit in the future.”
Lu Xunye waited for him to finish coughing before asking, “Then do you know if thereâs a discrepancy in Si Jinyan’s memories?”
Jian Luoqing was puzzled. “Are you talking about the time when he first woke up on the island? I’m not sure of the specifics. I only know that during that period, he had forgotten most of his past. Not long after my family brought him back, he was picked up by his own family.”
“When we met again later…”
He paused, clearly not wanting to dwell on unpleasant memories. “In short, it seemed as if he had recovered his memory.”
“His family?” Lu Xunye repeated under his breath.
At that time, Si Jinyan was officially an orphan. His relatives were all fighting for power; if they had known of his existence, they would have surely tried to kill him.
Could it have been Si Zheng? He was the biological son, after all. Even if Si Zheng was faking his death, he wouldn’t completely ignore him.
“Yes.”
Jian Luoqing didn’t know what Lu was thinking and assumed it was a follow-up question, so he shared everything he knew. “It was an elegant, wealthy-looking woman. She brought Si Jinyan’s ID card and their photos together for us to verify his identity.”
“His ID card?!”
Lu Xunye was shocked. Even if such a document wasn’t carried on one’s person, given the situation at the time, it should have been kept by the Shen family.
His sudden outburst startled Jian Luoqing. The youthâs entire body jolted, and he clutched his chest, his already pale face turning a shade whiter.
Lu Xunye snapped out of it and hurried to a nearby vending machine to buy a bottle of water. He handed it to the youth, his gaze fixed on the item in the otherâs hand.
“Do you want to take your medicine?”
Lu Xunye watched as Jian Luoqing took the medicine and his breathing gradually stabilized. He couldn’t quite describe the feeling in his heart; it was a bit melancholic. “Sorry about that just now. I scared you.”
“Itâs alright. That level of shock won’t kill me.” Jian Luoqing joked. “Otherwise, I would have been scared to death by Si Jinyanâs sudden episodes long ago.”
Lu Xunye didn’t find the joke about his own life funny. After hesitating for a long time, he asked, “…Was the transplant match still unsuccessful?”
“Surgery isn’t guaranteed to be 100% successful, nor is it a complete cure.”
Jian Luoqing looked up at the endless blue sky as he spoke. The gentle sunlight hit his face, casting a warm glow over his pale skin.
He reached out and closed his hand in the air, speaking horrifying words with a light tone. “Actually, I’ve gotten used to it. After all, Iâm also afraid that if I die on the operating table, I won’t be able to feel this sunlight anymore.”
Lu Xunye gazed down at him for a long time before retracting his gaze.
“Iâm sorry. Back then, you braved your illness and dodged Si Jinyanâs surveillance to warn us out of kindness, but I thought you were just showing off. I didn’t even listen to you and said some nasty things.”
“And that time at the Di Hua Hotel, you probably rushed over because you heard Si Jinyan was going to make things difficult for Shen Yunqian. Regardless of the reason, thank you.”
Hearing this, Jian Luoqingâs pupils trembled slightly. He looked up at the man standing tall by the bench.
The youth stood toward the light, the fine hairs on his face illuminated clearly, his black hair turned a deep brown by the sun. He had one arm crossed and the other supporting his chin, his brow slightly furrowed. The aura of worry softened the subtle coldness in his deep features.
Sensing a gaze fixed on his face, Lu Xunye turned his head and looked down. Only then did he clearly see a tiny beauty mark beneath the other’s eye.
While he was dazed, Jian Luoqing let out a light cough into his fist. “I suddenly realized that Mr. Lu is quite beautiful.”
Lu Xunye quickly looked away, thinking that such a direct comment was a bit presumptuous. He silently shifted a step to the side.
He forced a smile. “Ah, I didn’t mean anything by it, don’t take it to heart. Iâm actually an honest man.”
Jian Luoqingâs expression became a bit unnatural. “In that case, I think I also owe you an apology.”
“Hmm?” Lu Xunye looked back in confusion.
“I used to think you were an unlearned dandy, a profligate son waiting around to die.”
Jian Luoqing avoided his “unbelievable” expression. “I should have understood soonerâsince so many people like you, you must be a very good person.”
A very good person?
The smile on Lu Xunyeâs lips faded. “Perhaps youâve misunderstood. Not many people actually like me.”
“Being confident on the surface can also strengthen the heart. Sometimes you have to learn to brainwash yourself.” Jian Luoqing twirled the water bottle in his hand. “After todayâs conversation, Iâm certain you are a friend truly worth getting close to.”
Tsk… how did the topic end up here?
Lu Xunye felt there was a hidden meaning in his words. His eyes flickered for a moment before he finally remembered the thing he had been ignoring. “What about Si Jinyan? Didn’t he have people watching you?”
Out of the corner of his eye, Jian Luoqing saw several black-clad figures in the distance. They had arrived.
He didn’t know what to say, only marveling at Lu Xunyeâs “crow’s mouth” jinx.
“You really do know him well.” He let out a helpless sigh. “It seems it won’t be easy to sneak out in the future.”
“I only managed to sneak out for a breath of air under the pretext of getting medicine. Si Jinyan probably doesn’t know where you are at the moment, Mr. Lu. Itâs better for you to avoid him.”
Their thoughts were identical. Lu Xunye nodded. “Fair point.”
Jian Luoqing sat on the bench, his lonely back carrying a sense of resignation.
Lu Xunye had only run a short distance when he heard a loud shout from behind. “He’s running! After him!”
“!!!” Lu Xunye watched in disbelief as those men ran straight past Jian Luoqing and toward him. He immediately bolted.
The System, knowing the truth, told him not to run, but Lu Xunye didn’t listen at all, telling it to stay out of it.
After running for who-knows-how-long, Lu Xunye truly had no strength left.
