Chapter 94: Fishy Business
News of Chen Jiamu entering the hospital quickly reached the company. Hearing about the accident at the construction site, Chen Cheng forced herself to finish the company’s affairs and arrange everything before rushing to the hospital without stopping.
Li Xi had also received the news early. He rejected Song Jin’s dinner invitation and hurriedly drove to the hospital.
Li Xi and Chen Cheng met face-to-face at the hospital entrance. Chen Cheng was stunned for a moment when she saw him. But thinking that the two were once good friends, it was normal for him to come and show concern.
However, how was his news so fast?
Did Chen Jiamu tell him?
“Sister Chen, Jiamu…”
“I heard his hand was hit. Let’s go in and see.”
Chen Cheng lowered her eyes, tightened her grip on her bag, and began to run. Li Xi clenched his fists, gritted his teeth, and followed. When the two reached the ward, they saw Chen Jiamu’s entire arm wrapped tightly in gauze.
But the blood-red stains could still be vaguely seen beneath the gauze; it appeared the wound had just been sutured.
Chen Jiamu was currently lying on the bed with a pale face, his brows tightly furrowed. He was likely in immense pain.
Sensing someone entering, Chen Jiamu’s eyelids cracked open. Seeing it was Chen Cheng and Li Xi, he widened his eyes in surprise.
Why was Li Xi here?
He hadn’t told him!
“What happened at the construction site? What’s wrong with your arm?”
Chen Cheng didn’t have the mind to pay attention to Li Xi. She pulled a chair to his bedside and asked in confusion.
Chen Jiamu forced himself to stay conscious and recounted the events at the construction site, including the fact that he was wearing a helmet.
“You’re saying someone tried to kill you!”
Hearing this, Chen Cheng’s voice rose significantly. Her brows were knit, and the shock in her eyes was obvious.
Nowadays, it was rare to see someone strike so openly. Moreover, Chen Jiamu hadn’t offended anyone!
Who would make a move on him?
“Did you see what the person who hit you looked like?”
Facing Chen Cheng’s question, Chen Jiamu shook his head. “No, I only saw a pair of military-green shoes.”
“That person ran way too fast.”
Chen Jiamu himself was confused. He hadn’t even done anything yet, and someone was already retaliating against him.
“It’s fine. I’ll have someone look into it.”
Chen Cheng’s gaze darkened. She took out her phone and walked out of the ward. Before leaving, she cast a glance at Li Xi, who was standing to the side.
“How did you get here?”
Once Chen Cheng left, Chen Jiamu looked at Li Xi in surprise. Li Xi’s face was grim, his eyes radiating a cold light.
“If I hadn’t received the news, were you planning not to tell me?”
Li Xi looked down at Chen Jiamu, feeling both pained and helpless. Being stared at like that, Chen Jiamu felt a bit guilty, and his face flushed slightly.
How did Li Xi find out so quickly? Did he have an informant by his side?
“I… I just finished having the wound treated. I didn’t have time to tell you yet.”
Chen Jiamu felt this explanation was flawless. He truly hadn’t planned on telling Li Xi, at least not right then.
He had thought about waiting a couple of days until the wound stabilized before mentioning it, but he hadn’t expected Li Xi’s speed.
“Was there a dispute at your construction site before?”
“Or did you have an unpleasantness with one of the workers?”
Li Xi’s first guess was that a conflict had arisen among the workers. Then, someone had tried to ruin the project as revenge.
If a death occurred on a construction site, there was a high probability the project would be halted for inspection.
“I don’t know.”
“I did hear this morning that the foreman was deducting wages. Could that be the reason?”
Now that Chen Jiamu put it that way, it seemed plausible.
Li Xi pondered for a moment but felt that killing someone for that reason was simply not worth it.
“Didn’t your sister go to investigate? We’ll just wait and see what the reason is.”
Li Xi looked at his pale complexion, his eyes full of heartache. He walked to the water dispenser and poured him a cup of warm water. “Have some water.”
When Chen Cheng finished her call and pushed the door open, what she saw was Li Xi handing the cup to Chen Jiamu.
The bracelet on his wrist was faintly visible. Before Chen Cheng could get a clear look, Li Xi withdrew his hand and sat quietly to the side.
“I’ve had people look into it, and the police are investigating as well.”
“Recover well in the hospital for the next few days. I’ll handle things at the company.”
Chen Cheng sighed, looking at his injured arm with heartache. Had she known, she wouldn’t have let him go for the inspection.
“Okay.”
Chen Jiamu agreed quickly. Chen Cheng wanted to say something but held herself back. She glanced at Li Xi, feeling a strange sensation.
Shouldn’t Li Xi be in another province?
How could he have the time to run to Bei Cheng?
But at that moment, her phone rang, and Chen Cheng didn’t have time to ask further. Taking out her phone, Chen Cheng glanced at Chen Jiamu out of the corner of her eye and said urgently, “Talk with Little Li then. I have to go deal with things.”
Chen Cheng left in a hurry. It seemed the police had some news.
“Did your sister notice something?”
“I feel like the way she looked at me was off.”
Li Xi sat to the side. Chen Cheng had glanced at him twice out of the corner of her eye and had even seemed hesitant to speak.
Had she noticed something?
“No way.”
Chen Jiamu’s brow furrowed. Chen Cheng couldn’t be that sensitive, could she? Besides, they hadn’t done anything; they were just sitting normally.
“I don’t know. I feel like your sister’s gaze was strange.”
Li Xi shook his head, trying to shake the flustered feeling out of his mind.
“Don’t overthink it. My sister might just be too busy.”
Chen Jiamu comforted him softly. He felt Li Xi might be thinking too much.
“Mm.”
Setting that thought aside, the two fell into a rare silence. Li Xi held his hand, a heavy sigh escaping from his throat.
His brow was full of worry and relief. “Fortunately, nothing happened to you.”
“I’m fine, I was wearing a helmet!”
“Definitely fine.”
Chen Jiamu’s mindset was actually quite good. He even pulled his hand away to lightly pat Li Xi’s head.
The sun was setting, and the last rays of the sunset spilled into the ward, falling on the two of them.
In the afterglow of the setting sun, Chen Jiamu leaned over and pressed a kiss on Li Xi’s forehead.
The shadows of the two people overlapped and melded together under the sunset. The room was filled with tranquility and warmth.
Meanwhile, after leaving the hospital, Chen Cheng went straight to the police station. At the station, Chen Cheng watched the person throwing the brick on the surveillance footage, her teeth itching with anger.
The surveillance showed that after Chen Jiamu was taken away by the ambulance, a small-statured man had sneaked out of the construction site.
Moreover, before leaving, he had guiltily looked up at the surveillance camera above. It was precisely this action that completely exposed his face to the camera.
“Have you caught the person?”
As the surveillance ended, Chen Cheng urgently followed up. The police officer turned off the computer and patiently told her, “We’ve already sent people out.”
“There should be results soon.”
“However, have you had conflicts with others?”
“Because this person is a habitual offender. His name is Er Ma Zi, and he’s a notoriously well-known hoodlum in the area.”
“He’s been detained in our station several times already.”
The police officer took out a photo of Er Ma Zi. Chen Cheng frowned in confusion, her brain quickly recalling events. She hadn’t received any reports regarding abnormalities at the construction site recently.
“No.”
Chen Cheng said firmly that there were none, because she truly hadn’t received any such reports. Seeing her so certain, the police officer had no other choice.
The officer told Chen Cheng to head back first and that they would notify her once the person was caught.
Just as Chen Cheng stepped out of the police station, she saw a white figure running straight toward her…
