Part 8
Shen Yunqian: “It was all the trouble you caused.”
“Who knew theyād really get it wrong? Besides, Qianyu is such a nice name. You tasteless people just don’t know how to appreciate it.” Jun Li looked up and realized her cub was indeed quite a bit taller than her, feeling a sudden sense of regret. “It was more fun when he was little. He wore whatever Mommy gave him. Sigh. If Iād known, I would have taken more photos.”
Shen Yunqian didn’t dare respond, fearing heād get burned.
“Your Auntie Jiang likes those who are pitiable, beautiful, and sweet-tongued. One cry of grievance and her heart softens.” Jun Li raised an eyebrow. “Understand your mother’s meaning?”
“You’re going to introduce a new daddy to Lu Siheng?” Shen Yunqian couldn’t grasp his mother’s erratic thinking.
Jun Li: “…”
Jiang Qingran, while chasing Lu Siheng around the room, still had time to comfort Shen Yunqian. “Qianyu, your brother isn’t angry with you. Don’t take it to heart. Heās just someone who needs a beating every day.”
Lu Siheng stopped running. Being a “brother” could no longer shock himāhe didn’t have enough jaw left to drop.
“Who did you say was Qianyu?!”
Setting aside the name, solely because of his mother, heād always known Qianyu was a girl for over twenty years. It was Shen Yunqian?!
The weird thing was that Shen Yunqian didn’t deny it. His mother had come here today to have him meet Qianyuāsurely the two families weren’t so poor they had to share a room?
He still asked Shen Yunqian in disbelief: “You’re really Qianyu?”
Shen Yunqian didn’t want to admit to the name, so he kept his mouth shut.
“Yes, yes. His fatherās Chinese surname is Shen.” Jun Li suppressed her laughter as she explained. “You can call him Shen Yunqian, or Jun Qianyu. It was my fault for dressing him as a girl when he was little and in the country, making you all get it wrong.”
Before the age of eight, Shen Yunqianās ID had always said Jun Qianyu. It was the dark history he never wanted to admit.
Lu Siheng recalled all the lessons heād been given for opposing Ms. Jiangās marriage arrangements. It turned out his mother had been right all along.
So Ms. Jiang saying heād been clingy to Jun Qianyu since he was little and insisting on marrying her when he grew up was true? Heād just forgotten.
Holy crap. What a bizarre plot.
“Am I still not awake?”
“Here,” Jiang Qingran pulled the property certificate from the table. “Qianā”
Shen Yunqian interrupted her first: “Yunqian. You can just call me Yunqian.”
Jun Li smoothed things over: “Just listen to him.”
Just as Shen Yunqian was about to breathe a sigh of relief, he heard his mother say teasingly, “The kid is grown. He cares about his reputation.”
Shen Yunqian gave his mother a glare.
“Fine,” Jiang Qingran didn’t dwell on it. “Yunqian, this is a meeting gift from your godmother. Stay there however you like. If you get bullied outside, your godmother will back you up. If that fails, you can find your brother.”
“Hey!” Lu Siheng, afraid his mother would say something even more outrageous, pulled her to the side. The two of them whispered together like suspicious dogs.
“What is it? You still dare to disagree?” Ms. Jiang threatened him with her fist.
“Do you remember me saying I was dating someone? I think today is a good day. Do you want to meet him?” Lu Siheng watched his mother’s expression.
“Sure!” Jiang Qingran reconsidered. “But what about here? I feel quite bad for your Auntie Jun. It wouldn’t be right to stand her up.”
“Why not just call him over?” After suggesting it, Jiang Qingran felt it was inappropriate. “This is too sudden. I haven’t prepared a meeting gift. Where are you hiding the girl?”
Thinking of something, she gave Lu Siheng a hard punch on the back. “Son! Youāre so ungentlemanly! How could you let her wait outside!”
Lu Siheng nearly coughed up a mouthful of blood. Facing Ms. Jiangās questioning gaze, he stammered, “Actually… you’ve already met him.”
“Hmm?”
Lu Siheng took Ms. Jiangās face and turned it toward the two at the dining table. “Your son hasn’t failed you. Iāve caught the daughter-in-law youāve been dreaming of. Are you satisfied?”
Jiang Qingran grabbed Lu Sihengās ear. “Say that again?!”
Lu Siheng begged for mercy: “Anyway, he really can’t be your godson.”
The atmosphere was inevitably awkward after the four sat down. Jiang Qingran lowered her head with a frown, her mind wandering. The two young people were like mice whoād seen a cat, not daring to move.
Jun Li watched them with interest for a while, eating and drinking as if no one were there. Once she was full, she slammed the table.
The noise startled all three of them. Jiang Qingran was stunned, staring at Jun Li blankly.
“Hmph! Talking about being in-lawsāI see it was all nonsense, since some people don’t welcome us.” Jun Li grabbed Shen Yunqianās arm. “Let’s go.”
She gave Shen Yunqian a look. Shen Yunqian bit his lip awkwardly, stood up, and kept his head down. “I’m sorry, Auntie. I was presumptuous today.”
Jiang Qingran stammered, “No…”
“Why bother talking to these people?” Jun Li tried to pull Shen Yunqian away, but couldn’t. She turned back in frustration to see her sonās other arm being held.
“Mom, I’m the one who insisted on liking Shen Yunqian. I seduced him. I’m the one who insisted on official status. If you want to hit or scold someone, come at me. It has nothing to do with him.”
“I won’t let go.”
Jiang Qingran felt wronged. “No…”
Lu Siheng held onto Shen Yunqian, not noticing the hint the other man was giving by squeezing his hand. He was almost in tears. “Auntie Jun, I truly love him. Please… don’t take him away.”
“Thatās enough!” Jiang Qingran slammed the house certificate down, finally getting a chance to speak. “Did I say I didn’t agree?”
“I was just thinking about which country would be better to hold the wedding in.”
Lu Siheng: “Wh-what?”
“Yuyu, don’t be sad, don’t be sad.” Jiang Qingran subtly pulled Jun Li away, preventing the other woman from taking her son. She then grabbed Shen Yunqian and gave Lu Siheng a snort.
“Look at how pathetic you are. Would Mommy harm you? If youād listened to me sooner, would you need to be so pitiful right now?” She turned back to Shen Yunqian with a gentle smile. “Itās alright now, dear.”
Shen Yunqian looked at Jun Li, who gave him a wink, playing her part perfectly.
In his senior year, Shen Yunqianās exchange trip ended, and he returned to S-Country to complete his studies. He participated in several international design weeks and art exhibitions. While managing the family business, he also became a renowned young designer.
Meanwhile, Lu Siheng gradually took over the company, weeding out the “pests” within the group. He began developing a biomedical branch based on the original microelectronics engineering field.
The two found time amidst their busy schedules to fly to each other’s countries for surprise visits.
In the year of their graduation, Jun Li planned to bring the overseas business back to broaden the domestic market. Shen Yunqian disappeared with his luggage as soon as he got off the plane.
“Are you coming back for dinner tonight? What do you want to eat? Mommy will cook for you personally.” Jiang Qingranās voice on the phone was full of excitement.
Will I still be alive after eating? Lu Siheng thought. He made up a random excuse: “I’m not coming back. I have a banquet to attend. I’ll be back this Saturday. Eat on your own, old woman.”
For the convenience of going to the company, he had bought a small villa in a neighborhood with good security near the company. Sometimes Jiang Qingran would come to stay for a bit. She always complained it was small, but Lu Siheng didn’t mind living alone.
The semi-detached villa was separated from the next unit by a load-bearing wall. Heād lived there for three months, and the neighborās door had always been locked. Today, he returned to see the neighbor’s door open, presumably a new neighbor moving in.
That night, after washing up, he stood on the second-floor balcony, leaning against the glass railing. He watched the lights of the other residents and bought a ticket to S-Country for three days later.
Lu Siheng sent a message to his father: [Youāre still young. Forty-four is the age to strike out. Iām taking my annual leave; you handle it.]
Who could understand? Heād only taken over the company for less than two years and was already thinking of retirement.
It was nine in the evening. S-Country was 7,200 kilometers away with a six-hour time difference, making it around three in the morning there.
“He should be asleep by now.”
“Why don’t you call and ask him yourself?” A male voice came from nearby.
Thatās interesting. Waking someone up just to ask if they were asleepāLu Siheng wasn’t that wicked.
The neighboring balcony wasn’t lit. It was pitch black, and Lu Siheng hadn’t noticed when someone had stepped onto it. Connecting it to the familiar voice from before, he froze in place. The person next door turned on the light, and the warm yellow glow brought the man Lu Siheng missed right before his eyes.
Shen Yunqian smiled. “Hello there, new neighbor.”
Shen Yunqianās smile was bright and warm, chasing away Lu Sihengās fatigue. He broke into a smile in return.
