Chapter 36: He’s Had a Car Accident?!
“The patient’s condition is critical! Please make way!”
The sound of wheels mixed with shouting as several doctors and nurses hurriedly pushed a surgical bed toward the emergency room.
Shen Yunheng followed closely beside them, his eyes so red it seemed blood would drip from them the next moment. His hand tightly held the youth’s bloody wrist, his voice breaking with raspiness:
“Xiao An, hold on. It’ll be fine…”
The mobile bed was pushed all the way into the operating room. Shen Yunheng wanted to follow inside but was stopped by a nurse: “Family members, please wait outside. It’s our job now.”
He stood on the spot, watching as the door was slowly closed and the red light was turned on.
Seeing that he was covered in shocking blood, the young nurse stopped the cart she was pushing and asked: “Sir, let me take you to be checked!”
“No need. This isn’t my blood.”
the man shook his head, his gaze never leaving the operating room. His eyes were filled with deep worry and anxiety.
He was restless, his brow knit. He paced back and forth at the door, looking at his watch from time to time. He was tense, and his face became more and more pale.
If he hadn’t left Jian An for a single step just now, would this have happened?
Shen Yunheng knelt on the floor in self-reproach, a rare glimmer of tears in his eyes.
His hands were clenched tightly into fists, his knuckles white. His nails dug into his palms until blood seeped out. His heart felt as though it were being bitten by countless ants.
At this moment, apart from praying the man would be safe and pull through, he could do nothing.
Time passed second by second; it was agonizing.
The door to the operating room suddenly opened. Shen Yunheng stood up abruptly, looking haggard. He asked anxiously:
“Doctor, how is my friend now?”
One of the doctors took off his mask and frowned. “The situation is not optimistic. The patient has lost too much blood and needs an infusion of Rh-negative blood urgently. However, this rare blood type is in short supply in our hospital’s blood bank. The last remaining blood bag was taken by a patient with aplastic anemia.”
At these words, Shen Yunheng grew anxious. “Then what about going to the blood station to collect blood? Is there time?”
the doctor shook his head and turned back toward the operating room:
“We’ve already sent people to collect blood urgently. However, that anemia patient’s condition isn’t serious. If we can communicate and have them let you use it first, the hope might be greater.”
Hearing there was still hope, a glimmer of light suddenly rose in Shen Yunheng’s dark eyes. He said: “Nurse, please lead the way.”
The nurse gently pushed open a door. “This is it.”
Shen Yunheng strode inside. When he saw the person within, he slowed his pace and asked in a deep voice:
“Ji Songting?”
the man by the bed was momentarily stunned, then he stood up and turned around. His previously gentle face turned hostile in an instant. He said in an unfriendly voice:
“What are you doing here?”
Shen Yunheng didn’t answer. He turned his gaze toward Shen Chuyan behind him, and an inexplicable sense of disgust rose in him.
In the past, he only felt Shen Chuyan was two-faced and didn’t feel much. Now, however, he found himself inexplicably hating this brother.
Furthermore, weren’t they just playing with someone at the hotel? Why did they suddenly come to the hospital? Was it retribution?
The youth sitting on the bed had a ruddy complexion, yet blood plasma was being infused into his hand. There was also a blood bag on the table beside him.
Seeing his uninvited brother, Shen Chuyan said joyfully: “Brother, why are you here?”
Shen Yunheng raised his voice: “Xiao An has had a car accident. The doctor says Shen Chuyan’s symptoms aren’t serious. Give the blood bag to Xiao An first. He’s in a critical condition!”
Hearing this, Ji Songting was stunned. His brow knit as he stepped forward to grab the man’s collar, his voice cold and furious:
“What did you say?!”
the other man threw off his hand and said through gritted teeth: “I said Xiao An had a car accident! He’s at death’s door! And you have the heart to stay here with your lover? Are you even human?!”
“How could he… have an accident?”
Ji Songting swallowed with difficulty, his Adam’s apple bobbing. Suddenly, a sharp pain flared in his chest.
He had been fine before they left…
With a bit of doubt, he took a step forward. Before he could walk out, his wrist was grabbed by the person behind him.
That hand was exceptionally cold, which filled him with heartache.
Shen Chuyan noticed the man’s movement and the way he lightly gripped his hand back. He deliberately coughed violently several times and said weakly:
“A-Ting… how could Brother Xiao An suddenly have a car accident? Let him use mine first. I’m fine; I can hold on. Brother Xiao An is more important…”
These coughs sounded as if he were going to cough up his lungs. Ji Songting immediately stopped walking. Seeing him coughing until his face was red, he was instantly worried.
He poured a cup of warm water from the kettle, blew on it gently, and handed it to the youth. He said firmly:
“No. Your aplastic anemia is a bit serious; you can’t go without the infusion. As for that person…”
Ji Songting paused, then continued in a careless tone: “He can wait for the blood station to deliver. He’s tough; he won’t die.”
Shen Yunheng pressed his hand onto his shoulder, extremely furious:
“No one knows when the blood from the blood station will arrive. For every second of delay, Xiao An is in more danger. If he misses the best time for rescue—are you really this heartless? Three years of marital affection can’t even compare to someone’s three coughs?!”
“Affection? Shen-zong, don’t make something out of nothing. What kind of couple are Jian An and I? It’s just an agreement. If it weren’t for you insisting on taking him away, how could he have had an accident?”
At these words, Shen Yunheng’s body stiffened. Those words seemed to make him bear a heavy sense of guilt and self-reproach.
He was also a person who had indirectly caused Jian An’s car accident…
If he hadn’t insisted on taking the man away earlier, would this be happening now?
But he could not forgive, nor would he let anyone bully Jian An again and again.
Seeing this, Ji Songting let out a cold snort. He narrowed his eyes at the man, the corners of his mouth curling with heartlessness and mockery:
“Furthermore, the person I like has always been Xiao Yan. Whether that man lives or dies—what does it have to do with me?”
Just as he finished speaking, Shen Yunheng suddenly landed a heavy punch on his cheek. He didn’t hesitate at all, as if he were venting all the rage he had accumulated over these days.
Gasping for breath, he pointed at the cold and heartless man, his voice filled with intense hatred:
“Fine. Remember what you said today. From now on, Xiao An has nothing to do with you anymore!”
With that, Shen Yunheng turned and walked toward the door.
Shen Chuyan was startled by the sudden move. He pouted and shouted toward his brother’s retreating figure:
“Brother! How can you hit A-Ting!”
Ji Songting gently used his thumb to wipe the blood from the corner of his mouth. His eyes were dark and deep, looking as if a massive storm were churning within them. In an instant, however, he returned to calm, saying indifferently:
“Unbelievable.”
The person on the bed held his arm with heartache, the corners of his eyes red as if stained with a layer of rouge. He looked very pitiful:
“A-Ting, how are you? Does it hurt? Don’t blame my brother; he must care too much about Brother Xiao An.”
“I’m fine. Just take it as being scratched by a dog.”
Ji Songting sat back down on the chair, but his thoughts were uncontrollably going over the news of Jian An’s car accident.
He remained silent for a while, looking toward the window not far away, a complex expression flashing in his eyes.
“A-Ting, what are you thinking?”
It wasn’t until Shen Chuyan called out to him softly that he snapped back from his confusion. He then said hesitantly:
“Xiao Yan… you, are you feeling better?”
The other person was confused by his seemingly meaningful words, but still shook his head warily:
“I still feel a bit dizzy. Why?”
Ji Songting’s expression was a bit dark. He lightly flicked his eyelids toward the youth and said tentatively: “I don’t want him to die that quickly yet. Can these blood bags of yours save him?”
Hearing this, Shen Chuyan’s gaze stiffened. The gentle emotion on his face gradually vanished, replaced by a surge of jealousy.
He wished Jian An would die. Why would Ji Songting want to save that trash?
Knowing full well he was anemic and needed the infusion to recover, why would he want to trade his health for someone else’s life?
This was his thing!
Even if he destroyed it, poured it out, or didn’t use it himself, he wouldn’t leave a single drop for Jian An!
But looking at the man’s slightly expectant gaze, Shen Chuyan couldn’t bring himself to say those poisonous words.
He lightly bit his thin lip, his moist eyes filled with a bit of water, and crystal teardrops were stained on his eyelashes. His small nose trembled slightly.
This “pear blossom bathed in rain” appearance was truly heart-wrenching. Ji Songting immediately stood up, leaning down to carefully wipe the corners of his eyes with his thumb, asking with concern:
“Why the sudden tears? Are you uncomfortable anywhere?”
The other person licked his bloodless lips as if he had suffered centuries of grievance, saying in a low voice:
“A-Ting, I feel like I’m really so useless. Why did I have to have severe anemia? Otherwise, I could have given the blood bags to Brother Xiao An… it’s all my fault…”
Ji Songting raised his hand to dotingly stroke his head. “How could this be your fault? No one wants to be sick. I want you to be healthy too; you aren’t allowed to blame yourself like this.”
Shen Chuyan suddenly looked up to gaze at him. The smile on his lips was three parts shy and seven parts obedient. He said firmly:
“I’m fine! Take all the blood bags and give them to Brother Xiao An! He’s more important than I am; my little illness is nothing. Cough, cough… I still have to stay with A-Ting for a long time!”
“No one is more important than you.”
As Ji Songting spoke, he looked down at the blood bag the youth had sensibly pushed over, and his heart instantly became a tangled mess.
But why was he hesitating?
Shen Chuyan was the one he wanted to treasure for a lifetime, someone he would protect with all his might. Just as his failure to protect his most beloved mother would leave him with a lifetime of guilt, so would this.
And the one named Jian An had already caused the death of one of his most important people. He couldn’t let Shen Chuyan be hurt this time.
Thinking of this, Ji Songting placed the blood bag back on the table. His expression was sincere, his gaze determined. He held the youth’s other pale hand and made up his mind:
“I only want you to be well, to be healthy and happy. Others have nothing to do with me. Furthermore, the time for the blood station to deliver won’t be too long; he won’t die.”
“A-Ting…”
Shen Chuyan looked at him with tears in his eyes, but the depths of those eyes brimmed with triumph and contempt.
