Chapter 192: You Are My Medicine (17)
Xiao Ji kept it brief and to the point:
“Yinnian and I felt an immediate connection. He’s been staying at my place lately.”
No matter how distant they were, Xiao Ji was still his mother’s son.
Xiao mother naturally found it unacceptable that her son had simply taken in a psychiatric patient.
She didn’t let any of her disapproval show on the surface, but in her heart, she was already cursing the Chen family to high heaven.
However, with others present, it wasn’t the time to speak freely. The group could only continue their small talk, maintaining a facade of calm.
Chen Yinnian listened for a while before his mind began to wander.
Noticing his lack of focus, Xiao Ji gripped Chen Yinnian’s wrist and addressed the group:
“You all continue your chat. I’m going to take him for a walk.”
Without waiting for his mother’s reaction, he pulled Chen Yinnian by the wrist toward the backyard of the Xiao estate.
Whenever he was in a crowd, Chen Yinnian suffered from an irrepressible excitement.
He chattered away at Xiao Ji incessantly. Xiao Ji never found him annoying, simply listening with infinite patience.
At first, everything seemed normal.
But soon, likely triggered by the surrounding environment, Chen Yinnian began to babble nonsense—his sentences became disjointed, and his logic grew nonsensical.
In this state, not only was his speech exaggerated, but his physical gestures became broad and erratic.
He quickly drew the attention of several onlookers.
Xiao Ji didn’t try to correct or stop him; he simply told him to watch his step so he wouldn’t trip.
Whispers began to circulate among the guests.
Glances were frequently cast toward the pair.
Xiao Ji ignored them entirely, but eventually, Chen Yinnian noticed something was off. He looked around and frowned.
“What are they looking at?”
Xiao Ji took the blame upon himself, saying calmly, “Probably me. I rarely show up at these kinds of events.”
Chen Yinnian gave a distracted “oh” and went back to his incessant chirping.
This was the scene Chen Ni walked in on.
Smiling, he came up from behind and covered Chen Yinnian’s eyes.
“Guess who?”
Chen Yinnian delivered a sharp elbow to Chen Ni’s midsection.
“Chen Ni, stop f*cking treating me like a child.”
He didn’t use much force. Chen Ni played along for a bit before getting down to business.
“How are you feeling?”
Chen Yinnian huffed. “Thanks for fostering me out. I’m doing great.”
Chen Ni pinched his cheek.
“Don’t be a brat. I only showed mercy and lent you to your Brother Xiao for a few days because I could tell you liked him.”
Just as he spoke, Xiao mother appeared nearby. She said to Xiao Ji:
“A-Ji, come here for a moment. Help me get some things for your Aunt Chen to take back later.”
Xiao Ji exchanged a look with Chen Ni.
Chen Ni nodded, and only then did Xiao Ji hand Chen Yinnian over to him and follow his mother upstairs.
The moment they entered the study, Xiao mother closed the door behind them and her face hardened.
“Are you insane? Don’t you know that boy is ill? Why are you getting so close to him?”
Xiao Ji said flatly, “That is my own business.”
His mother’s brows shot up. “You are my son! You didn’t even consult me on such a major matter. If something happens to that Chen kid, who’s going to take the fall?”
“Xiao Ji, you’re a grown man. Have you forgotten how to weigh pros and cons?”
Xiao Ji frowned. “He is my boyfriend. What pros and cons am I supposed to weigh?”
Xiao mother froze, her voice rising an octave. “Boyfriend?!”
“Do you have any idea what you’re saying?!”
Xiao Ji remained composed. “My boyfriend.”
Xiao mother was speechless for a long time before she massaged her temples.
“You’re going to be the death of me.”
Xiao Ji countered, “You found a boyfriend ten years younger than you. What is there for you to be angry about?”
His mother let out an angry laugh. “I’m a woman!”
Xiao Ji said indifferently, “Then consider me to be the one continuing the family line.”
Xiao mother had always found it difficult to communicate with Xiao Ji. She could only try another angle, asking:
“Do the Chens know about your relationship?”
Xiao Ji told the truth. “Not yet. They will eventually.”
“The Chen couple will never agree to this!” she snapped.
Xiao Ji disagreed. “On what grounds? They’ve already given up on Chen Yinnian. They should be secretly thrilled that I’m willing to look after him.”
Xiao mother couldn’t understand how the usually silent Xiao Ji had become so peerless at twisting logic.
“Fine, fine. Setting aside the gender issue, have you considered the consequences of being with him? Don’t you know how much he’s put the Chen couple through? Even if outsiders don’t know, how could you not?”
To this, Xiao Ji only said three words:
“I am willing.”
The moment the words left his mouth, a commotion broke out in the garden below.
Xiao Ji’s heart tightened as he rushed to the window.
He saw Chen Yinnian standing by the fish pond, embroiled in a dispute with a man. He had the man pinned to the ground and was beating him.
Chen Ni sprinted over, hoisted Chen Yinnian onto his shoulder, and began walking away.
Chen Yinnian refused to let it go, kicking out his legs and delivering a final blow that sent the man tumbling into the pond.
Xiao Ji said only one thing:
“It’s your fault for calling me up here right now.”
With that, he pushed open the door and left.
By the time he reached Chen Yinnian and Chen Ni, Chen Ni’s face was livid. As Xiao Ji took Chen Yinnian from his shoulder, the boy was still struggling.
“What happened?” Xiao Ji asked.
Chen Ni was sweating profusely. “I don’t know. I just stepped away to take a call, and the next thing I knew, he was fighting.”
In his current state, Chen Yinnian obviously couldn’t stay at the banquet.
Xiao Ji carried him out of the yard and placed him in the car. Holding him close, he tried to soothe him:
“Calm down, baby. Don’t be angry.”
Chen Yinnian pushed Xiao Ji away. “Did you hear him? He insulted me! He was laughing at me!”
Xiao Ji took his hand.
“Don’t be angry. Tell me, what did he say?”
Chen Yinnian spewed a string of vile, unbearable words.
It took a long time for him to finally calm down.
That night, Xiao Ji’s phone was nearly blown up by his mother’s calls.
He didn’t answer. Once Chen Yinnian was asleep, he called Chen Ni back first.
“Did you ask? What did that man actually say?”
Chen Ni let out a long sigh, his head pounding.
“He didn’t say a thing. The guy was just walking by and happened to look at Xiao Nian a few times too many.”
Xiao Ji’s temples throbbed. “Is he lying?”
Chen Ni was silent for a moment. “Your backyard has surveillance, Xiao Ji. The man didn’t open his mouth once.”
“Do you know what that means?”
Xiao Ji pursed his lips.
“You mean… Chen Yinnian is hallucinating?”
