Chapter 8: Returning Home
The beast’s sudden action scared the wits out of Bai Zhouyun’s group. The three of them stood frozen in place, staring blankly at the creature pouncing toward them.
Truth be told, this was the first time they had seen such a powerful beast. The highest level they had encountered previously was only Middle-Level.
Li Liandong’s mouth twitched at their foolish display. He immediately drew a weapon from his space button. The dagger-like weapon looked small and delicate, but Nan Yu could see a faint shimmer of light revolving around it. The materials used to make it were clearly extraordinary.
Li Liandong threw the dagger with great force, and it buried itself directly into the beast’s hind leg.
“Aooo—!!”
The hideous mutated beast stumbled and rolled several times on the ground before coming to a halt. It could no longer stand on all fours; its back-left leg had been mangled by the dagger. Moreover, the dagger was clearly poisoned with something potent. The area around the wound had already turned a deep, bruised black.
“Roar—”
Even though it was heavily injured, its roar remained loud and intimidating.
Bai Zhouyun and the others, who were relatively close, were shaken by the sound, their ears ringing. Yun Feiyu even felt dizzy and couldn’t stand steadily.
Bai Zhouyun, who was beside him, reached out to support him. Because Yun Feiyu was too dizzy, he followed the momentum and leaned right into Bai Zhouyun’s embrace.
Because it happened so suddenly, no one expected it. By the time they recovered from the vertigo, Li Liandong had already finished off the wounded High-Level beast.
They didn’t notice at first, only realizing what had happened when they saw Li Liandong and Nan Yu—who had stepped out from hiding at some point—standing together.
It was only then that Yun Feiyu realized he was leaning in Bai Zhouyun’s arms right in front of Nan Yu.
He scrambled away from Bai Zhouyun and waved his hands frantically. “Student Nan Yu, don’t misunderstand! I was just a bit dizzy from the roar, and he was just helping me!”
Nan Yu expressionlessly shifted his gaze from Yun Feiyu to Bai Zhouyun. Bai Zhouyun had originally felt a bit embarrassed, but when he noticed Nan Yu’s seemingly accusatory gaze, he felt a surge of inexplicable irritation.
“Xiao Yu, don’t misunderstand. And don’t look at me with that kind of expression. You just think too much sometimes. There’s nothing between Feiyu and me; you should know that, right?”
Nan Yu’s mouth twitched. Even the brothers Yun Feiyu and Yun Feijiao knew that Bai Zhouyun was talking nonsense.
However, Yun Feiyu felt quite happy. Looking at it this way, did it mean Bai Zhouyun was still on his side?
In that case… maybe he still had a chance in the future?
Nan Yu said, “Fine. Let’s call it ‘helping’ then. Though I didn’t know helping someone involved one person wrapping their arm around another’s waist while the other leans into their chest.”
“Consider me poorly informed. Dean Li, let’s go. I want to head back now.”
Li Liandong couldn’t bear to watch anymore. What kind of bad karma did Nan Yu have to end up with a fiancé like Bai Zhouyun? Any random person on the Capital Star would be better than this guy!
At least others would maintain a proper facade. Unlike this Bai Zhouyun, who wore his dissatisfaction and disdain for Nan Yu right on his face, barely stopping short of saying it aloud.
If the deceased Old Man Nan knew his grandson was suffering such grievances due to the engagement he made in his youth, he would probably want to kill Bai Zhouyun himself.
He wondered what the current Old Man Bai’s attitude was. If he was anything like this Bai Zhouyun, then Nan Yu’s future would undoubtedly be bleak.
Nan Yu wasn’t thinking as much as Li Liandong. All he wanted to do was work hard over the next two years, combine his advantages with the Nianshen Cao, and quickly cross the barrier to become a High-Level Jingshenli Zhe.
That way, he could be free of Bai Zhouyun.
Once he became a High-Level mental power user, no matter which Yineng Zhe he ended up with—even if they were just polite strangers—it would be better than this scumbag Bai Zhouyun.
And who knew what kind of ridiculous things Bai Zhouyun would do while he was busy cultivating? Those two had already hugged; they surely had some ideas in their heads now, right?
He hoped Bai Zhouyun would “awaken” sooner this time. That way, he wouldn’t even have to manufacture opportunities for them.
Nan Yu followed Li Liandong to the gate of the forest wall with an expressionless face. “Dean Li, could I trouble you to send me home?”
He really didn’t want to wrong himself anymore. Bai Zhouyun had handed him the perfect excuse on a silver platter; if he swallowed his pride now, he wouldn’t be Nan Yu.
Sometimes, one needs a bit of a temper. If he had no temper at all, he’d want to slap himself.
Li Liandong took a deep breath. “Follow me.”
At this time, Bai Zhouyun was still with Yun Feijiao and Yun Feiyu, the three of them talking.
Yun Feiyu said, “Zhouyun, go and talk to Student Nan Yu properly in a bit. I hope he’ll listen to your explanation. After all, it really was just a misunderstanding.”
To be fair, it was a misunderstanding this time. With Dean Li present, Bai Zhouyun would have restrained himself regardless.
He wouldn’t have done such a thing on purpose.
Bai Zhouyun listened, but he was very reluctant. It was clearly just a misunderstanding, so why wouldn’t Nan Yu believe him? He was even giving him the cold shoulder.
In the past, Nan Yu rarely acted this way in private. Especially over the last two years, his attitude had always been great. But today…
For some reason, Bai Zhouyun felt that today’s Nan Yu was very off.
Yun Feijiao hurriedly patted his shoulder. “Zhouyun, look! Student Nan Yu is leaving with Dean Li. He’s probably asking the Dean to take him home! If the Nan family finds out about this, they’ll probably come looking for trouble!”
He was thinking especially of Nan Yu’s two “brother-con” brothers—the extreme “sister-con” types (though for a brother)—Nan Yun and Nan Zhen.
Whenever it came to their brother Nan Yu, they became obsessed. Anyone who dared to touch him was as good as dead.
Bai Zhouyun clearly realized this too. Although the Nan family wouldn’t truly do anything fatal to him, he would definitely get a few beatings.
“What’s going on? Why is Nan Yu being so petty this time? Getting jealous over such a misunderstanding? Doesn’t he know that if he goes back like this, his brothers will thrash me?”
Yun Feiyu quickly added fuel to the fire. “Yeah, he doesn’t seem to understand Zhouyun’s difficulties at all. Does Student Nan Yu only think of himself?”
Bai Zhouyun took a deep breath. “Forget it. If I get beaten, I get beaten. I can’t keep spoiling him like this.”
As Nan Yu was leaving with Li Liandong, he noticed Bai Zhouyun looking over and worried for a moment that he would come to stop them. But to his surprise, Bai Zhouyun didn’t come over.
He didn’t know the reason, but this was even better. It saved him from wasting any more time!
Translator’s Note: Nan Yu taking a stand! I love it. And Bai Zhouyun is so delusional, thinking he’s “spoiling” Nan Yu. The term I translated as “brother-con” is dikong (弟控), which refers to someone who is overly obsessed with or protective of their younger brother. It’s the male version of siscon. See you in Chapter 9!
