Chapter 122: Yasuo and Shen Ji Scramble
Before Su Tang could even respond, Yasuo jumped out in a panic, shielding her as he glared at Shen Ji.
“Stop dreaming about Su Tang! What kind of place is Team 2? Last time, your Sentinels were harassing her. If Su Tang goes to Team 2, who knows how much sheâll be bullied?”
With the previous incident brought up again, Shen Jiâs good mood vanished instantly.
He had been locked in confinement during that period, making it impossible for him to manage Team 2 effectively. He had been furious when he heard about it.
“That was because I was under restraint and couldn’t supervise them. I have already reinforced the discipline recently. Team 2 will never let something like that happen again.”
Shen Ji made a serious promise to Su Tang. Everyone had been under immense pressure recently; while he was stuck in the room, Team 2âs activities had essentially been frozen, and the Sentinels naturally harbored some frustrations.
However, a mistake was a mistake. Shen Ji didn’t intend to make excuses for them. They had already been severely punished and were still in confinement.
“Thatâs just what you think,” Yasuo countered. “A leopard doesn’t change its spots. Who knows if theyâll act one way to your face and another behind your back?”
Being provoked like this several times, Shen Ji couldn’t help but frown.
“Thereâs no need to be so sarcastic. If youâre going to disparage Team 2, why don’t you just say whatâs on your mind?”
Having his intentions called out, Yasuo lost his aggressive edge and became somewhat sheepish.
He kept glancing at Su Tang, and when the woman finally looked his way, he stuttered out his thoughts.
“Su Tang, why… why don’t you come to our Team 5? We have a great atmosphere, we value freedom, and youâve met A-Ning and the othersâthey all really like you. Also… also Xiao Yu is there. If you come to Team 5, I promise you the best treatment possible.”
As soon as Yasuo finished, Shen Ji let out a scoff, his mockery blatantâa clear retaliation for Yasuoâs earlier sarcasm.
“The best treatment? Do you mean the way Team 5 has to go to the most dangerous zones for every mission? Or do you mean your reputation in the White Tower, where everyone avoids you like the plague?”
“You’re talking nonsense!”
Yasuoâs face turned bright red instantly, his fur bristling like a cat that had its tail stepped on.
“Our missions are dangerous, but we make it back safely every time! Unlike your Team 2, which only takes on trivial escort duties. Since you haven’t taken a real mission in so long, I bet all your skills have rotted away!”
“At least the Guides in Team 2 don’t have to risk their lives to chew on the toughest bones with the Sentinels.”
Shen Ji raised an eyebrow, refusing to back down.
“We all know how unique Guide Suâs ability is. A talent like hers shouldn’t be used as cannon fodder in the pollution zones. Ask yourselfâif Su Tang goes to your team and goes out on missions with you, can you really ensure her safety 100%? Don’t make me laugh.”
This hit Team 5âs sore spot. Yasuoâs momentum weakened significantly, but he still argued stubbornly.
“But… but our team atmosphere is a hundred times better than yours! No one will give Su Tang a cold shoulder. Unlike Team 2âall smiles on the surface, but full of backstabbing underneath. If she goes to your team, she might not face danger on missions, but internal conflict will be endless!”
“Itâs still better than Team 5, where someone goes missing every time you step out the door,” Shen Ji retorted.
Shen Ji let out a light hum and looked at Su Tang, his tone serious.
“Guide Su, Team 5 handles the most dangerous perimeter missions for the White Tower. The pollution concentration is high, and they lack long-term backup. Going there is the same as placing yourself in a death trap. It is not a wise choice.”
Yasuo stamped his feet in frustration. Stimulated by Shen Jiâs words, the fire in his heart burned even hotter.
“Su Tang, don’t listen to his scaremongering! Our missions are dangerous, yes, but we are experienced. A-Ning and the others are veterans; theyâll protect you! Besides, weâre far from the core area, so we don’t have to deal with the high-level officials’ attitudes. Itâs much more free!”
“Free? The kind of freedom where no one cares if something goes wrong?” Shen Ji sneered.
“During the last mission, you got yourself trapped. Do I need to remind you how many people were involved?”
“Don’t go too far!”
“Enough.”
An Se, who had been standing by watching the show, noticed their conversation was getting increasingly disrespectful. The frown between his brows deepened.
“Is it really that satisfying to win a petty argument?”
An Se looked at Shen Ji with dissatisfaction. The latter snapped back to his senses and rubbed his temples. In the heat of the moment, he had said things he shouldn’t have.
What Yasuo hated mentioning most was the fact that people from Team 5 failed to return from every mission. For Shen Ji to use that as a weapon during an emotional outburst was indeed crossing a line.
Shen Jiâs expression shifted slightly as he realized he had poked too hard. He pursed his lips and remained silent.
Yasuo, meanwhile, had red-rimmed eyes, his clenched fists trembling slightly.
An awkward silence fell over the room, broken only by the sound of the wind outside. Watching their tense expressions, Su Tang gradually formed a plan.
She took a deep breath and broke the silence.
“Thereâs no need to fight anymore.”
Everyone’s eyes immediately locked onto her. Shen Ji and Yasuo both looked nervous, and even the silent Mo Xiao sat up a little straighter.
Su Tangâs gaze swept across the two of them before finally landing on An Se. Her tone was serious.
“Iâm not going to Team 2, nor am I going to Team 5. Director An Se, is the Medical Department short on staff? I want to transfer to the Medical Department.”
The room fell into stunned silence.
An Se froze for a moment, then raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement flashing in his eyes.
“The Medical Department isn’t exactly short-handed, but I can certainly transfer you over. Are you sure, though?”
These two men are practically fighting over her like dogs, and she chooses neither?
“Iâm sure,” Su Tang nodded, her gaze firm.
“Captain Shen is right; Team 5âs missions are too dangerous. While Iâm not afraid, I don’t want to add to your burden. But Team 2 is too close to the center of power; it’s impossible to guard against the hidden daggers and schemes.”
She paused, looking at An Se.
“Only the Medical Department doesn’t require going out on missions with a squad. Since the White Tower is already watching me, no matter which combat team I join, they will eventually find a way to plant spies during a mission. Only the Medical Department can put an end to that.”
Her words were like a bucket of cold water, waking everyone up from their fixation.
“Youâre right.”
Mo Xiao had already accepted the fact that Su Tang would be moved from Team 1. Regardless, he was already Su Tangâs Sentinel. The fact that she had marked him was known by everyone in the Tower. Even if they weren’t on the same team, it wouldn’t change the fact that he belonged to her.
“The Medical Department is relatively independent and doesn’t involve field work. It is indeed the safest choice right now.”
At least in the Medical Department, with An Se looking after her, the White Tower would have to think twice before making a move.
Furthermore, being with An Se was far more reassuring than leaving her in the hands of those two staring, hungry dogs.
