Part 2
In a nearby open space, a group of people was undergoing combat training. Shouts and the sound of fists hitting flesh rose and fell.
Seeing someone being pushed in, they stopped their training one after another to watch.
Jiang Chenyanâs brow furrowed. He didn’t want to be stared at. He turned to look at Walter, who was following behind. “Can you say it now? What collaboration do you want to talk to me about?”
Walter didn’t answer. He simply signaled the bodyguards to stand down, then led Jiang Chenyan through the crowd toward a small room in the corner of the hall.
He pushed the door open. The lights inside were dim, and there was only one table and two chairs.
Walter closed the door behind him and sat opposite Jiang Chenyan, his hands crossed on the table. “Before we talk about the collaboration, remove the disguise from your face.”
Jiang Chenyan found it funny and didn’t forget to mock him. “Are you that eager to see my face? Or are you actually uncertain and unsure if I really am Jiang Chenyan?”
Walter neither admitted nor denied it. He simply tapped the tabletop. “Weâll know in a moment.”
The door was pushed open gently, and a young woman in a white lab coat walked in. She was slender, and there was no strong pheromone fluctuation coming from her. She was a Beta.
The female Beta held a silver tray with several transparent test tubes and a wad of soaked cotton pads.
“Follow me.”
Jiang Chenyan was “escorted” by the bodyguards to follow her into a brightly lit small room.
In the center of the room was a metal examination bed. A giant mirror was embedded in the wall, and various unknown instruments were arranged around it. The woman signaled for Jiang Chenyan to sit, then picked up a cotton pad from the tray and dipped it into the transparent liquid in a test tube.
“It might be a bit cold.” Holding the cotton pad between her fingertips, she lightly pressed it against Jiang Chenyanâs cheek.
The moment the liquid touched his skin, a cool sensation spread. Jiang Chenyan could clearly feel the disguise layer on his face slowly melting. That layer was made of special biological material; normally, it adhered perfectly to the skin and could even simulate real pore textures. Now, under the effect of the chemical, it gradually became transparent and viscous.
The womanâs movements were skilled. Following the contours of his skin, she gently wiped from his forehead to his chin, peeling away Jiang Chenyanâs disguise bit by bit.
As the cotton pad moved, the previously plain-looking features began to change. His brow bone became more defined, the corners of his eyes tilted up slightly, revealing his original narrow and sharp eyes, and the high bridge of his nose gradually appeared.
Finally, the woman used a clean cotton pad to wipe away the remaining liquid. Jiang Chenyanâs true face was completely exposed before the mirror.
The woman leaned in to examine him, her eyes lighting up. “Heâs even better-looking than the photos online.”
Jiang Chenyan: “…”
The two bodyguards marched Jiang Chenyan forward until they stopped before a sandalwood desk.
Walter looked up at the sound. He truly was quite a beauty. He let out a light chuckle. “The texture of this real skin is indeed top-notch.”
Jiang Chenyanâs stomach churned. He held back the urge to blow the manâs head off. “You went through all this trouble to kidnap me. For what exactly?”
Walter set down his pen and leaned forward slightly. “Join me.”
“?” Jiang Chenyanâs brow furrowed tightly. “You kidnapped me just to make me join you? This recruitment method is certainly unique.”
“Not entirely.” Walterâs fingertips tapped the desk, making a dull sound. “The stir you caused after your death wasn’t small. Xie Huaijin and your Eldest Brother have been searching for your body. Even Shen Shiyue went mad for a while because of what happened to you.”
Jiang Chenyan: “I don’t want to collaborate.”
“With me, there is no ‘want’ or ‘not want,’ only ‘must.'” Walterâs voice turned cold. “You have no right to choose.”
Jiang Chenyan changed his strategy just in time. “Can you give me two days to consider? I need to think it over carefully. After all, this isn’t a small matter.”
After hearing Jiang Chenyanâs request, Walter didn’t respond immediately. He was thinking about whether to find a different way to get the best of both worlds.
Time passed second by second.
Just as Jiang Chenyan was about to break the deadlock, Walter finally moved. He didn’t say “okay” or “no.” He waved a hand toward the bodyguard beside him, his tone flat without a hint of emotion: “Lock him up first.”
Jiang Chenyan: “?”
…
Staring at the cold iron bars in front of him, Jiang Chenyan frowned.
What happened to considering the collaboration? That guy Walter had clearly changed his mind at the last second and wanted to use him directly as a bargaining chip.
Jiang Chenyan kicked the iron bars in front of him. A dull sound echoed in the small space, and the bars shook slightly.
The only upside was that there was a signal here, so he could contact Kai Lan.
If he remembered correctly, there seemed to be another person curled up in the shadows across from the iron bars.
The person had very long, thick black hair that reached their waist. They were facing away from him, sitting motionless against the wall. The light was dim, so he couldn’t see their face at all; he could only vaguely see a slender silhouette.
Jiang Chenyan called out tentatively: “Hey?”
The cellmate gave no response, maintaining the same position like a silent stone statue.
Jiang Chenyan stared at the figure across the bars and tried calling out twice more. His voice echoed in the empty basement, but still, he received no reply.
Just as he was about to speak again, a guard walked in impatiently. He tapped the iron bars with his electric baton. “Stop shouting. Sheâs a mute. It won’t do any good even if you scream your lungs out.”
Jiang Chenyan was startled, his fingertips pausing in mid-air.
So it wasn’t that they didn’t want to respond, but that they couldn’t speak.
He looked at the figure curled in the shadows. A complex emotion rose in his heart, and he gave up the idea of communicating.
The guard closed the door with a clank, and the footsteps gradually faded away.
Seeing that the man had left, he told Kai Lan the general plan and asked Kai Lan to share his location with Shen Shiyue.
Kai Lan: “Alright, don’t worry.”
The next second, a panicked shout came from the other end.
“Holy shit! Why is Shen Shiyue coming over? Why is the pressure so low? Is he going to hit me?!”
Before Jiang Chenyan could fully react, he heard Shen Shiyueâs voice, which was so deep it could practically drip water. “Iâm coming for you.”
Just as Jiang Chenyan wanted to respond, there was a click from the other side.
“I know, I know! Letâs hurry and find Jiang Chenyan.”
Kai Lan had been terrified by Shen Shiyueâs aura and disconnected.
Based on Shen Shiyueâs reaction, he was probably going to flip Walterâs nest upside down.
Suddenly, the lights overhead went out. The entire basement was instantly plunged into pitch-black darkness where one couldn’t even see their own hand.
“Whatâs going on? A power outage?”
“Just a regular power cut. They shut it off for half an hour every night.” A cold female voice came from across the iron bars, breaking the dead silence of the dark.
Jiang Chenyanâs pupils contracted in the darkness. He instinctively looked toward the source of the voice. Although he couldn’t see anything, he could still feel the presence across from him. “You… aren’t you unable to talk? The guard said you were a mute.”
“Heh…” The woman let out a soft laugh, her voice carrying a hint of mockery and relief. “Thatâs just an act for them. In this hellhole, the less you speak, the less trouble you invite. Itâs how you live longer.”
In the darkness, the distance between the two seemed to shrink.
The woman asked Jiang Chenyan, “Hey, whatâs your name?”
Jiang Chenyan frowned. “You go first.”
The other side of the bars was silent for a moment before a voice came. “Ye Qingyu.”
“Jiang Chenyan.”
In the darkness, Ye Qingyuâs voice suddenly spiked. “Youâre Jiang Chenyan?!”
Jiang Chenyan sat on the ground. “What, am I that famous?”
“Youâre an SS+ rank Alpha. Itâs hard not to know your name.” Ye Qingyuâs voice gradually calmed down. “Iâve only been locked up here for half a month, but I can still hear some outside news. Aren’t you dead? Is this some kind of rising from the dead?”
“Something like that. ‘Rising from the dead’ isn’t the wrong term to use.” Jiang Chenyan brushed it off lightly before changing the subject. “What about you? How did you end up locked here by Walter?”
