Chapter 2: Stars part 1
The Person He Hadn’t Contacted in a Long Time
Yuan An took a taxi straight to the entrance of a villa district. After getting out of the car, he tore his medical examination report into pieces and threw it into a trash can before walking toward an elegant and luxurious villa.
It was currently working hours, so the three men of the Lu family were at the company; only a few servants were in the villa. When they saw Yuan An return, the servants only gave a slight greeting with lukewarm attitudes.
The gardener responsible for the grounds walked by carrying a pot of orchids. Seeing the pure white flowers, which looked like small butterfly wings nestled among the green leaves, Yuan An felt a stir in his heart. He suddenly said, “Let me do it.”
The gardener looked at Yuan An with a face full of confusion.
“Give the flowers to me,” Yuan An said. “I’ll take them up.”
The gardener hesitated for a moment but eventually handed the flowerpot to Yuan An.
Yuan An looked down at the orchid, his thoughts turning complex as he headed upstairs.
His mother, Yuan Chulan, had passed away from a sudden amniotic fluid embolism after giving birth. Before Lu Suichu returned, Lu Chengyue had always believed that Yuan Chulan had only given birth to one childâYuan An. At the same time, he believed that Yuan Anâanâs birth had brought a curse that killed Yuan Chulan, and thus he had always been indifferent toward him.
It wasn’t until Yuan An was sixteen and the Lu family brought back Lu Suichu that Yuan An realized his normally stern father could also show such a kind and doting expression. Perhaps to make up for his absence during the first sixteen years of Lu Suichuâs life, Lu Chengyue pampered him to the extremeâif he wanted the stars, he would give him the moon as well.
As for the accusations that Yuan An had “cursed his biological mother to death,” there was no trace of such blame placed on his twin brother born of the same womb.
Sometimes Yuan An wondered if his father and brother would have treated him better if his mother were still alive. Or perhaps his mother would have been just like them, favoring the weak and sickly Lu Suichu…
Thinking of this, Yuan An lowered his eyes.
The latter thought only occurred to him occasionally; most of the time, he avoided thinking that way. When he was wronged outside as a child, he would sometimes secretly hide in his motherâs room at night and cry. Although she had passed away and could not give him a hug, she provided him with a place of solace in another sense.
Since Heaven had given him the chance to be reborn, he would definitely leave the Lu family in this life before the stomach cancer was discovered. He would receive treatment as early as possible so that his heart wouldn’t be targeted by them.
However, before leaving, he wanted to take another look at his motherâs room.
When Yuan An reached the door of the room where Yuan Chulan had lived, the door was open, and the maid, Wang Ma, was inside cleaning. To maintain the room exactly as it was when Yuan Chulan was alive, Lu Chengyue had specifically ordered it to be cleaned regularly, a tradition held for over ten years.
Therefore, Yuan An wasn’t very surprised and pushed the door open to walk in.
However, Wang Ma, who was wiping the dressing table, seemed startled. Her body shook violently before she turned around with a sharp reaction.
Once she saw that the person who entered was Yuan An, Wang Ma gave an uneasy smile and asked, “Young… Young Master, why did you come in so suddenly?”
Her strange reaction caused Yuan An to look at her for a few seconds. His gaze made Wang Ma feel guilty, and her face turned a bit pale.
“Young Master, is there something you need?” Her voice trembled slightly.
Yuan An stopped looking at her and said softly, “Itâs nothing.”
After speaking, he carried the flowerpot to the windowsill. After setting it down gently, he slowly began to take in the room.
Over there, Wang Ma started wiping the dressing table again. During her movements, her sleeve pulled back slightly, revealing a jade bracelet. Although Wang Ma quickly pulled her sleeve back down, Yuan Anâs sharp eyes caught sight of the bracelet.
His face immediately darkened. He walked over to the dressing table, grabbed Wang Maâs hand with the bracelet, and scrutinized it carefully.
“Young… Young Master, what are you doing?” She broke her hand free and covered the bracelet with her sleeve, her expression frantic.
Yuan An looked at her steadily and asked, “That braceletâwhere did it come from?”
“This… this is something my son bought for me. Young Master, you canât just use your family’s wealth as an excuse to casually suspect a servant of stealing your things. If you don’t believe me, wait until Chairman Lu returns, and we can settle this clearly in front of him.”
Wang Ma was using Lu Chengyue to suppress him. Having worked for the Lu family for nearly ten years, she knew Yuan An didn’t dare complain to Lu Chengyue because the man wouldn’t believe him. Moreover, Yuan Chulan had been dead for twenty-two years; no matter how good Lu Chengyueâs memory was, he couldn’t possibly remember every piece of jewelry she once owned.
She could also hide the bracelet before Lu Chengyue returned.
Yuan An naturally knew what Wang Ma was planning, so he had no intention of getting bogged down in an argument. “The price of that bracelet isn’t something your gambler son could afford. Besides, rather than waiting for Father to return, Iâd rather trust the police.”
Wang Ma looked at Yuan An in disbelief. She couldn’t understand how the previously submissive Young Master had suddenly become like a different person.
Seeing Yuan An actually take out his phone to call the police, she hurried forward to grab his hand and shouted, “Young Master, how can you throw dirty water on me? Think about itâwhat was the Madam’s build? How could I possibly fit into her bracelet size? This is my bracelet!”
Even at this point, she was still unwilling to admit it. Yuan An understood; after all, the market price of that jade bracelet was at least five million yuan, so Wang Ma wouldn’t return it easily.
He shook Wang Ma off and tapped his screen to place the call to the police.
“The more you say, the more mistakes you make. Being able to wear this bracelet doesn’t prove it’s yours, because it was never my mother’s size to begin with.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the call was connected. After explaining the situation, Yuan An ignored Wang Ma’s wails and dragged her by the hand to lead her downstairs.
Wang Ma looked up at Yuan Anâs back, her heart racing with panic.
The Young Master really had changed. Before, no matter how she bullied him, he would choose to endure in silence because he was afraid of causing trouble for Chairman Lu. But now, he had called the police without the slightest fear.
What should she do? With so much jewelry, how many years would she have to spend in prison?
However, before Wang Ma could figure out how to beg Lu Chengyue for mercy, she had already been brought to the first-floor hall by Yuan An.
Seeing this, Butler Chen stepped forward with a frown to ask, “Young Master, whatâs going on?”
He had never seen Yuan An like this either. The expressionless youth before him was a far cry from the weak Young Master in his memory. The grip on the hand of Wang Ma, who used to bully him, was firm and steadyâit seemed like a proof of rebellion.
Seeing Butler Chen, Yuan An let go of Wang Ma and said, “Look at what is on her hand, and youâll understand.”
Hearing this, Butler Chen quickly grabbed Wang Ma and pulled down her sleeve, seeing the incredibly valuable jade bracelet.
He was the one who inventoried the Lu family’s assets, so he recognized immediately that this was an heirloom bracelet Chairman Luâs mother had once given to the Madam. He hadn’t expected Wang Ma to steal the Madamâs things right under his nose.
Butler Chenâs eyes widened, and he looked at Yuan An with lingering fear.
“Iâve already called the police. Later, please have the officers do an inventory to see if there are any other thieves in this villa,” Yuan An said.
At this moment, Butler Chen didn’t dare treat Yuan An as the Lu familyâs unfavored Young Master. He nodded and had the security guards lock the doors, not allowing anyone else to leave.
A short while later, the police arrived. After understanding the situation, Butler Chen took two officers upstairs to inventory Yuan Chulanâs belongings while the other two officers questioned Wang Ma in the hall.
