The Sickly, Despised Character is Reborn Chapter 7

Chapter 7: You Xing

Changing the Chief Surgeon

On the second day of his hospitalization, Yuan An’s attending physician informed him that the surgery was scheduled for three days later.

At the same time, Director Xu gave Yuan An the contact information of a lawyer.

After getting in touch with the lawyer, since he would still need to be hospitalized for a period of time after his surgery, Yuan An could only organize all the evidence in his hands and hand it over to the lawyer, commissioning him to help file the lawsuit.

The lawyer already had a good relationship with Director Xu and readily accepted Yuan An’s commission.

When Director Xu learned that Yuan An was receiving treatment in the hospital, he scolded Yuan An first, blaming him for not telling him sooner, and then took all the follow-up matters of the lawsuit upon himself so that Yuan An could focus on recovering.

Yuan An was deeply moved by this and promised to treat Director Xu to a meal after he was discharged.

After dinner, Yuan An went to the garden again to clear his head. It was only when he spotted a familiar silhouette from behind that he suddenly snapped out of it, realizing that he had unconsciously walked into that corner again.

Recalling their rather unpleasant conversation from yesterday and the slightly dissatisfied mood the other party seemed to have when leaving, Yuan An couldn’t help but freeze in place, temporarily unsure whether he should leave or step forward as if nothing had happened.

But if he left, the garden was full of strangers everywhere, and he didn’t seem to know where else he could go.

Just then, the man seemed to notice his arrival and turned his head to look at him.

The warm, golden light of dusk spilled over the man’s shoulders. He didn’t know if it was because this glow softened the man’s features, but Yuan An felt that he seemed much gentler.

“Do you want to come and sit?” the man asked faintly, neither hot nor cold.

Yuan An paused slightly, then nodded, walking over to sit on the other side of the bench.

He hadn’t expected the other party not to mind his rudeness from yesterday. After sitting on the bench, he didn’t know what to say either, so he could only lapse into silence for a while.

Qin Sixing lightly stroked the pattern on his cane. After a long pause, he said in a low voice, “About yesterday, my apologies.”

Yuan An turned his head in some surprise, and immediately understood that the man was apologizing for his attitude yesterday.

He hurriedly smiled and waved his hand, a shallow dimple indenting the right side of his pale cheek. “It’s nothing. Yesterday, it was me who spoke without a sense of propriety.”

Qin Sixing looked at that dimple and smiled faintly without realizing it. “No, your reminder was very right. I will be careful in the future.”

Yuan An breathed a sigh of relief. He didn’t want to part ways on bad terms with this man in this lifetime either. If possible, he quite hoped they could become friends in this life.

The two looked at each other and smiled.

Afterwards, Qin Sixing shifted his gaze to the side, looking at a magnolia tree not far away.

“That magnolia tree is blooming beautifully.”

Yuan An followed his line of sight, his eyes lighting up as he nodded.

The variety of magnolia planted at First Hospital bloomed twice a year. In addition to blooming once in March and April, it would bloom once more from July to September.

Yuan An still remembered that when he encountered the man in his previous life, the magnolia tree not far away was also in full bloom. The watercolor painting he did back then was precisely of that magnolia tree.

He hadn’t expected that in this life, the two of them would meet again when the magnolias were blooming.

Suddenly, Yuan An remembered that when he was painting here in his previous life, he had promised to paint a picture for the man as well. It was just that before his death, this agreement was never fulfilled.

Yuan An was dazed for a moment and turned to look at the man, wondering if he should make up for that painting.

Qin Sixing noticed Yuan An’s gaze, withdrew his line of sight to meet his eyes, and asked softly, “Why are you looking at me like that?”

Yuan An snapped out of it, pursed his lips, and asked, “I just realized that I haven’t asked for your name yet, sir.”

Qin Sixing looked at his blank gaze, chuckled softly, and said, “Qin Sixing. ‘Si’ as in commander, ‘Xing’ written with ‘You’ and ‘Xing’.”

Listening to his self-introduction, Yuan An suddenly thought of Xingxing’s online handle.

You Xing.

Did it also mean “Xing”?

But Yuan An didn’t link the two together for the time being. He merely said, “My name is Yuan An. ‘Yuan’ as in wilderness, ‘An’ as in peace.”

“Yuan An,” Qin Sixing repeated the name. Remembering that Yuan An’s pen name was An Yuan, he found it inexplicably cute in his heart. “I’ve remembered it. Can I call you An’an?”

Yuan An revealed his dimple once more and said, “You can. I’ve remembered Mr. Qin’s name as well!”

Qin Sixing once again dazed out slightly while looking at that dimple.

The sky gradually grew dark. Yuan An looked at Qin Sixing and asked again, “Why did Mr. Qin come to the hospital again today? Is there somewhere you’re uncomfortable?”

Qin Sixing snapped out of it and said, “My leg has been hurting a bit these past few days, so I need an examination.”

“It might be because it’s been raining at night in Hejiang City these past few days, making the air too humid.”

“Perhaps. My family home is in Jingshi, and I only came here this year, so I’m a bit unaccustomed to the climate here.”

Yuan An thought about it. “There’s a Jishi Medical Hall on the east side of Hejiang City. There’s an old Chinese doctor named Li inside whose skill at treating leg injuries is very excellent. If you go to him to get some dampness-dispelling plaster, it might be better for your leg pain.”

An old Chinese doctor.

Hearing this, Qin Sixing stared fixedly at Yuan An, his eyes filled with an emotion that Yuan An couldn’t decipher.

Yuan An tilted his head slightly in confusion.

Qin Sixing’s hand resting on the other side clenched tightly into a fist, but a refined smile appeared on his face as he said, “I’ve noted it down. Thank you… An’an.”

Yuan An was a bit dazed, feeling that the tone when Qin Sixing said “An’an” was inexplicably similar to Xingxing’s.

But their voices were somewhat different, so Yuan An didn’t think further into it.

By the time the sky was completely dark, it was already past eight o’clock in the evening. Yuan An didn’t want to disturb Qin Sixing for too long, so he planned to say goodbye to him and head back to the ward.

Seeing him stand up, Qin Sixing hurriedly called out to stop him: “What about you? You’re hospitalized, right? Hospitalized for what?”

Three questions in a row revealed his urgent state of mind.

Yuan An didn’t hide it from him either, saying, “Early-stage stomach cancer. The surgery is scheduled for three days later, and the doctor says the chances of recovery are very high.”

Qin Sixing nodded. “A very high chance… that’s good.”

Yuan An smiled at him once more, and only then did the two say goodbye. Not until Yuan An’s figure disappeared into the main entrance of the inpatient building did Qin Sixing withdraw his gaze that tracked his departure, subsequently standing up to leave the garden.

Sitting in the car back to the hotel, Qin Sixing kept thinking about what occurred when Yuan An mentioned the old Chinese doctor just now, as that matter involuntarily surfaced in his mind.

Yuan An had never suffered a leg injury. The only reason he could know there was such an old Chinese doctor at Jishi Medical Hall was entirely for him.

Back then, Qin Sixing had just become despondent due to a disability left in his leg after a car accident. It was Yuan An who inquired about this old Chinese doctor, then used every possible means to fish out his address, and from then on, sent him medicinal plasters from time to time.

However, because the plasters were mailed with the help of the doctor at Jishi Medical Hall, Qin Sixing only knew that Yuan An was in Hejiang City, but didn’t know his specific address.

To an online friend he had never met in person, he could even go to such lengths.

Recalling Yuan An’s earnest expression when speaking of the old Chinese doctor just now, Qin Sixing seemed to be able to see the Yuan An from two years ago through it. The imagination from two years ago had now merged with reality, and his heart rate quickened beyond comparison. Heaven knew how much willpower he had to use to suppress the urge to embrace Yuan An.

Qin Sixing raised his hand to cover the lower half of his face, yet the smile in his eyes couldn’t be concealed, and his ears grew slightly red from the heat.

After a brief moment, he lowered his hand, took out his phone again, and placed a call.

Early the next morning, Yuan An was notified by a nurse that his attending physician had changed, and he needed to go over for another consultation as well as a re-arrangement of his surgery.

Yuan An was completely mystified, not understanding why the attending physician would be changed so close to the surgery time, but he still followed the nurse to the new doctor’s office.

“This is an expert with nearly twenty years of experience as a chief surgeon. Some of his surgeries from a few years ago were even written into medical school textbooks…” On the way, the nurse introduced this new doctor to Yuan An, recounting each of the famously difficult surgeries Dr. Jiang had performed before.

The more Yuan An listened, the more perplexed he became, unable to understand how such an incredible doctor had come to Hejiang City and even became his attending physician.

He voiced his confusion to the nurse, but the nurse simply shook her head, indicating she wasn’t clear about it either.

While the two chatted, they soon arrived at Dr. Jiang’s office.

Upon entering the office, Yuan An found several doctors standing by the consultation desk.

Sitting behind the consultation desk was a middle-aged man in his forties with a refined demeanor. He was currently looking at a scan on the computer, discussing the optimal surgical plan with the other doctors.

Just then, Yuan An’s previous attending physician noticed the arrival of the two. He let out a light cough and said, “It’s almost time to start work now. Everyone should head back to their own offices first and come back after shifts to discuss with Dr. Jiang.”

Hearing this, the several doctors laughed heartily, bid farewell to Dr. Jiang, and walked out of the office.

Jiang Hede looked at Yuan An with a loving gaze, gesturing for him to come and sit in front of the consultation desk.

Seeing such a gaze from Jiang Hede, Yuan An’s originally somewhat nervous mood instantly calmed down.

He walked over to the consultation desk, sat down, and answered Jiang Hede’s questions one by one.

However, he didn’t know if it was just an illusion, but Yuan An noticed that Dr. Jiang’s gaze occasionally carried a hint of scrutiny.

Once the consultation finally ended, Jiang Hede wore the same loving smile as he said, “To find out you have cancer at such a young age, were you frightened out of your wits?”

Yuan An shook his head, replying candidly, “It was alright. And besides, I’m not that young anymore.”

“Twenty-two is the age of just graduating from university; your life can be said to have just begun. Have you thought about what you want to do after you recover?”

Yuan An thought about it and nodded. “I’ve thought about it, but not much.”

Jiang Hede smiled and said, “I can feel that you haven’t actually thought much about planning your life after recovery. Do you not believe you can completely heal? Relax, you need to maintain a better mindset.”

Yuan An was slightly stunned, not expecting to be seen through so easily by Dr. Jiang. In his previous life, he had already died of terminal stomach cancer, so after being reborn, he had only cared about the events that happened before his death in his past life. Up until now, he truly hadn’t thought much about what he should do if he managed to survive.

“It’s fine, take your time thinking. Even if it’s just the thought of wanting to live on, that is also a kind of plan.”

Yuan An nodded and said, “I understand. Thank you.”

Although he didn’t know why Dr. Jiang was telling him these things, he could feel Dr. Jiang’s goodwill and gentleness.

“The timing of the surgery is still according to the previous arrangement, except the primary surgeon will be changed to me. Do you have any objections?”

As soon as Jiang Hede’s words fell, Yuan An immediately shook his head and said, “No, not at all. To have you perform the surgery on me is a massive stroke of luck on my part.”

Seeing him shake his head so fast it looked like a rattle-drum, Jiang Hede burst out laughing.

What an interesting kid.

“Then this consultation is over. Adjust your mindset over these few days. It’s just a minor surgery; it will pass very easily.”

Jiang Hede’s tone was so gentle it was as if he were coaxing his own child.

Yuan An had never received this kind of love from an elder before, and couldn’t help but daze out a bit.

However, he quickly snapped out of it, thanking Jiang Hede once more before getting up to leave.

At noon, Yuan An went to the small supermarket to buy a sketchbook, a few pencils, and an eraser. Then, in the afternoon, he brought these things to that small corner of the garden.

On the bench sat Qin Sixing, who had changed into a casual suit.

Yuan An was very happy that he was here today as well, running forward hurriedly.

Hearing the sound, Qin Sixing turned his head and smiled gently. “You’re here.”
