Chapter 136: Kiln-Roasted Chicken
Cheng Ge was too embarrassed to look at the enthusiastic people outside the door. He glanced at his grandfather’s bewildered and awkward face, then lowered his head and rubbed his nose.
Wen Ling was completely oblivious to this subtle atmosphere. Grabbing Cheng Ge’s shoulder, he glanced at the people outside the door, then back at Cheng Ge. He held his breath slightly, his expression somewhat serious, as if waiting for Cheng Ge’s next “instruction” at any moment.
Someone started chuckling “hehehe” first, and Cheng Ge followed suit and laughed.
Wen Ling asked in a low voice, “Cheng Ge, why are you suddenly laughing?”
Cheng Ge twitched the corner of his mouth and tugged at Wen Ling’s clothes. “Don’t ask, just laugh along.”
So everyone laughed together.
Anyway, there was nothing a good laugh couldn’t solve.
But after laughing together, Cheng Ge felt even more awkward…
Cheng Ge quickly explained the misunderstanding to his grandfather, stating that they both already had partners.
Grandpa reacted quickly. He coughed a few times, put down the mop, and greeted the group of neighbors outside.
The small single-story house was instantly packed. Cheng Ge brewed and poured tea, Wen Ling served it. Cheng Ge brewed and poured more tea, and Wen Ling served it…
Most of the time, the aunties and Grandpa were chatting, while Cheng Ge occasionally threw in a couple of explanatory sentences.
The girls hid in the back. After learning the truth and recalling how the two boys had run away like they were fleeing for their lives just now, they all secretly laughed, trembling like flower branches in the wind.
The girls hadn’t really wanted to go on a blind date anyway; mostly, they were urged by their families and just came to humor them. Now that it was a misunderstanding, they felt even less burdened.
Getting to look at handsome guys—hilarious handsome guys at that—wasn’t a loss.
In the end, to show that “they didn’t come for nothing,” Grandpa braised a large pot of wheat and bean rice, sharing it with the room full of people.
Only when night fell did the small house quiet down. After washing the dishes and exchanging a few words with Grandpa, Cheng Ge pulled Wen Ling back to their room.
Wen Ling wasn’t stupid either. Hearing the conversations between Grandpa and the aunties, he knew he had caused a bit of trouble.
But, but this couldn’t be entirely blamed on him! How was he supposed to know that the local dialect for finding a partner sounded like that?
Wen Ling was in a state of feeling a bit guilty and a bit wronged, making him completely forget how to act cute.
Cheng Ge noticed Wen Ling silently holding his hand, keeping quiet, clearly sulking with himself.
“What are you doing?” Cheng Ge wrapped his arm around Wen Ling’s waist, drawing out his words.
“I didn’t do it on purpose.” Wen Ling’s voice was soft, sounding exceptionally aggrieved.
“Of course you didn’t do it on purpose,” Cheng Ge laughed, poking Wen Ling’s waist and then tickling him. “I’m still here, and you’re going on a blind date? Huh? What blind date are you going on?”
Wen Ling wasn’t very ticklish, but he couldn’t withstand Cheng Ge deliberately tickling him like this. After a few pokes, he started laughing along with Cheng Ge, saying to him, “I already have Cheng Ge.”
“Was it fun being chased so miserably?” Cheng Ge asked deliberately.
Wen Ling shook his head. He thought for a moment and added, “But it was a little thrilling, especially when I was pushing you. And I pushed you very steadily, it wasn’t shaky at all.”
“And you weren’t even panting after running, right?”
“Yes.”
Cheng Ge smiled, shaking his head after hearing this. “Look at you, so smug.”
But then again, with Wen Ling pushing a wheelchair up and down every day, his stamina was much better than before.
Since Cheng Ge had already praised Wen Ling as “awesome,” he definitely had to kiss him a few times. But before the kiss could happen, it was interrupted by Grandpa’s knock on the door.
“Little Cheng, Wen-zai, Grandpa is coming in?”
“Ah, ah, wait a moment,” Cheng Ge’s lips quickly pressed against Wen Ling’s cheek. Then he immediately sat up straight, made the boneless-looking Wen Ling stand properly, and finally said to Grandpa, “You can come in now.”
Grandpa didn’t have any other matters; he just came to ask about the fact that both Cheng Ge and Wen-zai had partners.
Cheng Ge had almost forgotten about this. The situation was urgent at the time; if he hadn’t said that, the two of them would have definitely been dragged off by those aunties to blind-date those girls.
Grandpa: “Why didn’t Little Cheng tell me before? Wen-zai too, I haven’t heard you guys mention it.”
Cheng Ge spouted nonsense: “Ah… well, I wanted to give you a surprise later, I just didn’t expect to be exposed early, haha.”
Grandpa couldn’t interfere much with young people’s affairs, but he at least had to understand their partners’ character: “So, Little Cheng, how is your partner…”
“Great!” Cheng Ge said with a straight face, “So great that there’s nothing like them in heaven or on earth. My partner is exceptionally cute and treats me very well, here, just like Wen-zai.”
Grandpa nodded and looked at Little Wen. “Then Wen-zai…”
Wen Ling blinked, half-understanding, and mimicked Cheng Ge: “Great! My partner is also very great, likes me the most, and treats me exceptionally, exceptionally well. Look, just like Cheng Ge.”
Grandpa gratifyingly stroked his non-existent beard, smiling warmly. “As long as you both have people who care about you by your sides, then Grandpa can rest easy.”
Grandpa didn’t want to rush them to find partners, but he was afraid that after he passed away, his grandson and Wen-zai would have no one to accompany them. He had been worrying about it for days, but now that heavy stone in his heart had finally dropped.
The blind date storm passed just like that. The days returned to their usual tranquility, warm and peaceful, leisurely and carefree.
Perhaps it was because Cheng Ge had previously described kiln-roasted chicken and sweet potatoes as so delicious and fun that Wen Ling, after hearing it, kept thinking about it.
Every time he saw the bare fields, Wen Ling would ask Cheng Ge, “When can we make kiln chicken together?”
Cheng Ge went from saying “Wait another two weeks” to “Wait another two days,” and finally, on a sunny afternoon, the two of them built a kiln in the field.
Cheng Ge’s leg was recovering surprisingly fast. The doctor recommended using the wheelchair and crutches interchangeably. For small-scale movements, Cheng Ge would lean on his crutches to walk.
Once the dirt clods were burned red-hot, Cheng Ge told Wen Ling to toss the foil-wrapped chicken and sweet potatoes inside, and then smash the kiln.
Wen Ling was originally afraid of the heat and stepped carefully. After two steps, finding he was perfectly fine, he jumped onto the top of the kiln with both feet, slightly raising his head, standing proud and valiant.
His eyes were saying, “Cheng Ge, look at me, hurry and look at me.”
“Hey, hey, hey,” Cheng Ge saw him and got a fright. He directly fished Wen Ling down, frowning and flicking his forehead. “Be careful, it’s very hot.”
Wen Ling saw Cheng Ge frowning and thought his leg was hurting, his heart aching to death. “You’re the one not being careful. Does your leg hurt?”
He thought Wen Ling would act cute after being scolded, but unexpectedly, this guy turned around and lectured him instead. Cheng Ge almost couldn’t adjust.
“It doesn’t hurt, I’m putting my weight on my good leg.”
“Really?” Wen Ling now knew how to press for answers, his worry completely written on his face.
Cheng Ge: “Of course it’s true, my other leg hasn’t even touched the ground.”
Only then did Wen Ling breathe a sigh of relief, hugging Cheng Ge dependently. “You scared me to death…”
Cheng Ge’s heart trembled. A strange feeling welled up inside him—he was being cherished and constantly cared for.
