Chapter 43
Yu An walked into the classroom with his small mouth pursed. Xu Mingyao immediately ran over, placed a glass of milk on his desk, and seeing him looking unhappy, asked with concern, “An-an, did someone bully you?”
Seeing his loyal expression as if he wanted to vent his anger for him, Yu An gave him a resentful look. “Mhm, your gege bullied me.”
Xu Mingyao’s face stiffened. He awkwardly turned his head away. “I… I still can’t beat him in a fight right now. How about you endure it a bit longer? Wait until I grow a bit older and can beat him, then I’ll go help you teach him a lesson, okay?”
Xu Mingyao at least had basic self-awareness. Going head-to-head with Xu Yening right now would be completely seeking death; his gege could crush him to death with just one hand.
So he needed to endure the humiliation and bear the burden for a few years.
Yu An’s pink and tender small mouth pressed into a straight line. His hands squeezed Klold’s soft body. He felt very angry at Xu Yening, but he didn’t take his anger out on Xu Mingyao. It was obvious that this person was also the oppressed one in his family.
Yu An: “Okay, it’s fine.”
Perhaps Yu An’s expression was too disappointed, and Xu Mingyao couldn’t help but feel a wave of dejection.
The usually arrogant little boy glanced at Yu An, then lowered his eyelashes to hide the disappointment in his eyes. He was truly too useless right now; he couldn’t even help Yu An vent his anger. He returned to his seat listlessly.
Yu An didn’t know what was wrong with him again. Xu Mingyao’s thoughts had always been hard to guess. He couldn’t figure it out, so he simply stopped overthinking.
Remembering Zhou Xia’s abnormal behavior last night, Yu An asked his most well-informed desk mate, “Wan Cen, do you know what happened in the dormitory last night?”
The school had mixed dormitories. With the intention of taking care of the primary school students, they were placed to live with upper-grade students so they could look out for one another.
Wan Cen had slept relatively early last night. He carefully thought back on whether anything had happened. “I don’t know. It doesn’t seem like anything happened. What’s wrong?”
Yu An sighed and lay on his desk. “It seems Zhou Xia gege got bullied by someone again.”
“Zhou Xia… he got bullied again?” Hearing Zhou Xia’s name, Wan Cen immediately didn’t find it strange. “That’s very normal. His class is the rocket class, with lots of wealthy students. Zhou Xia rarely takes extra tutoring classes, yet his grades have consistently suppressed theirs. It’s perfectly normal for them to be unhappy about it.”
But Yu An simply couldn’t understand the logic behind this. His small eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “Just because Zhou Xia gege‘s grades are good, his classmates don’t like him? So weird…”
“It’s not weird.” Wan Cen knew many friends, and with the deliberate education from his family, he sighed with feigned maturity. “To put it bluntly, it’s just the mentality of not wanting to see others do well.”
Yu An understood, nodding with a heavy expression. “I know now. They are just jealous that Zhou Xia gege‘s grades are better than theirs, so that’s why they always bully him.”
This was all because Zhou Xia gege was too outstanding, and also because those upperclassmen (xuezhang) were sore losers.
During class, Yu An kept sending messages to Fu Yunshu and Gu Yixing, wanting to know Zhou Xia’s current situation. Perhaps because they were both concentrating on their classes, no one replied.
Little White lay on Yu An’s lap, dutifully acting as a smartphone. When Yu An checked his messages for the umpteenth time, it couldn’t help but remind him.
[Little Master, if you are really anxious, I can go to the junior high school building to take a look for you.]
It flew fast and had a small body that wouldn’t attract attention. A round trip would take ten minutes at most, much faster than Yu An waiting endlessly for a reply.
Yu An rested his chin on one hand, gazing out the window at the sunny campus scenery. The junior high school building wasn’t far from them. With a glance, he could see the corridors were completely empty.
Yu An stuffed Little White back into his pocket. “Forget it, class is about to end anyway.”
There were only fifteen minutes left until the morning classes ended. Soon, it would be lunchtime. According to Fu Yunshu and the others’ habits, they would wait for him downstairs. It wouldn’t be too late to ask them then.
Enduring for another fifteen minutes, the moment the dismissal bell rang, Yu An suddenly perked up. His eyes shone as he looked at the teacher on the podium, his face written full of anticipation.
Class is over, class is over~
The teacher couldn’t help but laugh, teasing, “It seems some classmates can’t wait to go eat, so we’ll leave this last question for the next class.”
He smiled and waved his hand. The students in the class, who had been ready and waiting, immediately dispersed in a swarm, sprinting wildly towards the cafeteria, terrified that if they were a second late, the food would be gone.
Yu An didn’t go compete with them. He strolled unhurriedly at the very back. There were too many people at the stairwell, so he waited for the others to leave before heading downstairs alone. However, when he reached the stairwell, the companions who usually waited for him there were nowhere to be seen.
“Weird…” Yu An looked left and right, muttering in confusion, “Where are they?”
He stood at the stairwell and waited for a while, but never saw Fu Yunshu and the others come over.
Yu An couldn’t help but feel anxious. He had Little White contact Fu Yunshu or Gu Yixing, but the results yielded nothing. It was as if these three had completely lost contact.
Little White stealthily flew out of his pocket, landing on Yu An’s shoulder, and rubbed its small head against his cheek.
[Little Master, how about we go to the cafeteria first to take a look? Maybe they went to the cafeteria to wait for you.]
But the possibility of Fu Yunshu and the others leaving early was very low. Yu An took Little White’s advice and decided to check the cafeteria first. Along the way, he was filled with unease, constantly looking around for those familiar figures.
This was the first time Yu An was left alone. The faint sense of discomfort made his small face look stern, his two little hands stuffed into his pockets, looking fiercely cute.
But in reality, he was constantly squeezing Klold inside his pocket to alleviate the unease in his heart.
The cafeteria was packed with people. Yu An barely managed to squeeze his way in. Because he was short, he was frequently bumped into by upperclassmen (xuezhang and xuejie) who didn’t even realize it until they looked down and noticed a person there.
“Ah! Little xuedi, sorry, sorry.”
After being bumped into several times in a row, Yu An’s heart was numb, but he still smiled friendly at the xuezhang. “It’s fine.”
It was because he was too short; he couldn’t blame others.
While looking for Fu Yunshu and the others, Yu An deliberately bought a cup of fresh milk, biting on the straw and drinking until his cheeks puffed out. He firmly believed that as long as he drank enough milk, he could grow tall.
“Woof.”
Monday barked softly, sniffing the scent in the air, and told Yu An:
[The scent of the little snake and the others isn’t here. They didn’t come to the cafeteria.]
He couldn’t reach them on their phones, and they weren’t in the cafeteria. Now Yu An was truly panicking. Could something have really happened to them? No, he had to go find them.
[Wait.]
Klold suddenly spoke up. An invisible, large hand pressed onto Yu An’s shoulder, gently pushing him further into the cafeteria.
[It’s mealtime now. Eat first.]
A little cub should eat meals on time every day. Nothing should stop him from doing so.
Yu An was unwilling.
[But what about Yunshu gege and the others?]
[It’s fine, they are very safe right now.]
Klold spared a sliver of His consciousness to check and confirmed that those few were still alive, urging Yu An to eat.
[Eat first and then go look for them. Going now won’t be of any use anyway.]
Left with no choice, Yu An went to line up in front of an omurice stall, curiously asking Klold:
[…You know their situation?]
Klold said briefly:
[Mhm, that rabbit got angry and is now leading a bunch of rabbits to take revenge.]
Ah???
Yu An was stunned. Untangling a thread of logic from his chaotic thoughts:
[Is it… Zhou Xia gege?]
Klold had no interest in this human. He lazily confirmed it was him, and then there was no more follow-up. No matter how Yu An asked, He only had one sentence:
[Eat your food first.]
Yu An had to obediently find a seat and start eating in large bites. He ate eagerly, finishing his meal hastily in just over ten minutes.
He swallowed the last bite of rice, grabbed a tiny tentacle hanging over the edge of his pocket, and pulled the half-asleep Klold out.
[Can you tell me now?]
Klold slowly opened His eyes, looking at this audacious cub, attempting to intimidate him with His gaze so he would let go of His tentacle. However, Yu An wasn’t scared in the slightest, meeting His gaze with wide eyes.
Three seconds passed, and Klold was the first to concede. But He didn’t tell Yu An everything in exhaustive detail:
[…Great-eared Rabbits excel at spatial manipulation. Your friends have been trapped by the rabbits. As for the specifics, go take a look at their classroom yourself.]
Perhaps he could even catch two rabbits to eat. Klold thought about how Yu An had grown this big without ever tasting a Great-eared Rabbit, and He suddenly felt a wave of heartache. After all, Great-eared Rabbits were the favorite snacks of Ushatos cubs.
If Yu An had lived in their ancestral territory, the elders could bring back several rabbits for him to eat every day.
Klold uncharacteristically added an extra sentence:
[Great-eared Rabbits taste pretty good. You can give it a try.]
Yu An had previously felt an appetite for the rabbit, but that was Zhou Xia gege‘s rabbit; he couldn’t eat it. He shook his head and said:
[I don’t eat rabbits. If it’s Zhou Xia gege‘s friend, then it’s my friend too.]
Klold: […]
Top and bottom of the food chain can be friends? The absurdity of Yu An being friends with a Great-eared Rabbit was like a human becoming friends with a chicken drumstick. It was simply unbelievable.
Regardless, in all the years Klold had lived, this was the first time He had encountered a situation like Yu An’s.
For a moment, He couldn’t distinguish whether Yu An or Chausier—who was famously absurd within the clan—was more ridiculous. But on second thought, the two shared a commonality: Klold had participated in both of their upbringing.
Klold’s heart went half-cold. He began to recall how Yu An looked when He first arrived, shockingly realizing that back then, Yu An had nothing but pure, well-behaved adorableness.
Could Yu An have become like this today because of Him?!
Klold fell into a deep state of self-doubt.
Yu An didn’t know about Klold’s tumultuous internal fluctuations. After leaving the cafeteria, he headed straight towards the junior high section. While passing through a small grove of trees, a white figure flashed past his eyes like lightning.
Yu An froze. What was that?
“Woof!”
Monday leaped out of Yu An’s pocket, letting out a threatening low growl from its throat, and then chased after the white figure with even greater speed.
A short while later, Monday returned with a snowy-white, adorable large rabbit in its mouth, swaggering its way back. It placed the dying rabbit in front of Yu An, its eyes practically begging for praise.
Yu An smiled, petting its head and giving it a kiss. “Our Monday is so amazing. I like you the most.”
Monday wagged its tail furiously and nudged the rabbit closer to Yu An.
[For you to play with!]
The puppy considered chasing to be a game. Now, it was giving its favorite toy to Yu An. The rabbit was so terrified it stayed perfectly still, appearing exceptionally docile when Yu An picked it up.
Yu An looked closely at this rabbit, his small brows furrowing. “This isn’t Zhou Xia gege‘s rabbit.”
Translator’s Note: Hey everyone! A quick translation note for this chapter:
- Xuezhang (學長) / Xuejie (學姐) / Xuedi (學弟): These are school honorifics. Xuezhang/Xuejie refers to male/female upperclassmen, while Xuedi refers to a younger male student. Yu An is so short he keeps getting bumped into by the Xuezhang!
