Chapter 138. Anse and Su Tang

Yasuo’s fingertips fiddled with the hidden clasp on his collar for a long time, but ultimately, he still didn’t dare to unbutton it.

Anse’s gaze, shooting over the top of his book, felt as if it carried a physical weight, pressing down on him so much that even his breathing became somewhat lighter.

Frustrated, he released his hand, cursing Anse a thousand times over in his heart, yet he could only accept reality.

Su Tang poured herself a glass of water, turned around, and looked in Yasuo’s direction. From the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of something sparkling around his neck, and couldn’t help but feel a bit curious.

“Yasuo, are you wearing something around your neck? Why does it look like it’s flashing?”

“Heh.”

Before Yasuo could reply, the man sitting over there holding a book couldn’t resist letting out a soft scoff.

It was one thing for Yasuo to actively pull open his clothes and use this little trinket to seduce Su Tang, but being discovered by her before he even had the chance to make a move was another matter entirely.

Especially with that guy sitting over there, looking as if he had everything figured out and staring at him with such a peculiar gaze, Yasuo felt his scalp tingle with tension. How long had it been since he last encountered such an embarrassing situation?

“Nothing, you must have seen wrong.”

“Oh, right, Su Tang, I… I just suddenly remembered there’s still some business waiting for me to handle over at the Fifth Squad. I’ll be taking my leave first.”

Seeing that Su Tang didn’t buy his excuse and was instead closing the distance between them, looking very much like she wanted to verify it with her own hands, Yasuo stood up abruptly. The chair legs scraped against the floor, letting out a grating screech.

He waved his hands in a panic, his eyes darting away, completely lacking the courage to meet Su Tang’s gaze.

“I’m leaving now. Didn’t you two have something to talk about? Take your time.”

Before his voice even faded, he dashed out the door like a gust of wind, shutting it with enough force to make the walls tremble slightly.

“What exactly is wrong with him today?”

Su Tang raised her eyebrows in exasperation. When she turned around, her eyes met Anse’s gaze. The man had already put down his book; his eyes were calm and unruffled, as if he hadn’t been the one who just let out that soft scoff.

“He probably just remembered some urgent matter and went back to deal with it. He’s always been like this, you don’t need to pay him much mind.”

Was that so?

However, Su Tang felt Yasuo’s words sounded more like an excuse. Why did he need to find such an excuse to leave?

Was it because he didn’t want her to touch the chain hanging around his neck?

That’s right, Su Tang had already seen it; the sparkling object around Yasuo’s neck was a thin chain. She just hadn’t seen a chain that emitted such a unique light before, so driven by a sudden surge of curiosity, she had wanted to step forward, hook it, and examine it closely.

She just hadn’t expected Yasuo to have such a huge reaction.

But the more he tried to hide it, the heavier Su Tang’s curiosity grew. It seemed she would have to wait for a time when he wasn’t paying attention to hook it out and get a good look next time.

“Still thinking about Yasuo?”

Anse’s voice suddenly rang out, carrying an imperceptible trace of coldness.

He pushed the vial of green liquid in his hand toward her, deliberately emphasizing his tone.

“Compared to Yasuo, you should be paying more attention to this. We are about to enter the contaminated zone, and the area we are responsible for is heavily plagued by the red mist. You should be thoroughly understanding the uses of this suppressant right now; that is what’s most important.”

Su Tang’s attention was pulled back by him, and she nodded repeatedly.

“Oh, right, I almost forgot business. Can this suppressant really resist the erosion of the red mist?”

Seeing that he had successfully drawn Su Tang’s attention back to himself, Anse’s mood smoothed out considerably, and he earnestly explained it to her.

“This vial of suppressant can suppress the activity of the red mist. By applying it to a Sentinel’s body, it can resist the speed of the red mist’s invasion. If the contact time with the red mist isn’t long, its effect on the Sentinel can be almost negligible.”

Su Tang picked up the vial of pale green suppressant and examined it carefully against the light. The liquid flowed slowly inside the tube, gleaming with a delicate luster.

“Is there a specific way to apply it? Is it a case of the more you apply, the better the effect?”

Anse shook his head, his fingertip tapping lightly on the tube. Only then did Su Tang notice that there were graduation marks on the surface of the tube.

“Do you think these are jellybeans, where the more the merrier?”

“It’s not ‘the more the better.’ The dosage for each vial is strictly controlled within five milliliters. After all, it’s a substance that lowers activity; an excessive amount will also affect the user’s own energy. You just need to focus on applying it to the carotid artery, the inner wrists, and the temples. The skin is thin in these areas, and applying it there makes it harder for the red mist to invade.”

As he spoke, he pulled out a pen and paper from Su Tang’s cabinet, quickly sketching out a few diagrams illustrating the application points.

“This potion is useful for you as well.”

“The red mist is highly corrosive. You had contact with this stuff last time, so you should have noticed that your spiritual power cannot expel it. Therefore, after entering the zone, you need to apply this potion every six hours.”

Anse moved quickly, and the application areas were soon clearly marked on the drawing.

“You are different from a Sentinel; you have more key areas to apply it to.”

Saying this, he tapped the drawing in his hand.

Su Tang leaned in closer to look at the drawing, her nose almost touching the back of his hand. A faint scent of disinfectant mixed with a crisp, cold aura drifted into her nasal cavity; it was a scent unique to Anse.

Noticing that she was a bit too close to Anse, Su Tang leaned back, slightly pulling the distance between the two of them apart.

“Department Head Anse is truly meticulous. If you hadn’t marked these areas on the drawing, I’m afraid I never would have thought of them.”

Anse’s fingertips paused slightly. He turned his head and met Su Tang’s smiling eyes. The sunlight filtered through the window and fell on her eyelashes, casting faint shadows and making those eyes appear exceptionally bright.

Anse pursed his lips slightly, averting his gaze from the girl’s line of sight.

“Take this vial of suppressant for now. Over the next couple of days, you can apply a suitable amount to let the potion build up a tolerance with your body.”

“Alright, thank you again for your hard work, Department Head Anse.”

She carefully placed the suppressant into her portable medical kit. When she looked up, she happened to see Anse still looking down, perfecting the drawing. The lines of his profile appeared especially sharp in the sunlight, and even the shadow of his eyelashes exuded earnestness.

“Anse,” she suddenly spoke up, “Did you stay up all night last night? You have bloodshot eyes.”

The man’s fingers, which were drawing the diagram, paused. Then, Su Tang watched as he slowly lifted his head, bit by bit, until his gaze met hers.
