After the Straight Man Cannon Fodder Was Targeted by the Perverted Crazies Chapter 188 (vol. 3)

Chapter 5: Kill That Gold-Digging Scammer 5

That night, Zhou Geng experienced a rare bout of insomnia.

He didn’t know why.

Perhaps he was just used to sleeping alone, and suddenly having another person beside him felt a bit strange.

But fortunately, the bed was quite large.

He slept close to the edge of the bed, and the two of them didn’t make any physical contact.

The next day.

Zhou Geng was woken up by his alarm clock.

He squinted his eyes, rubbed his throbbing temples, and turned off the alarm.

He didn’t know when he finally fell asleep last night, but there was no doubt he hadn’t gotten enough rest.

However, he still had to take Shen Wu to the building materials company. Their appointment was at 9:30, and they couldn’t be late.

He turned his head to look at Shen Wu.

He was still sleeping soundly.

He was completely wrapped up in the pale yellow summer quilt, with a small tuft of hair sticking up messily. His skin was very fair, making him look as cute as a squishy glutinous rice ball.

Zhou Geng couldn’t help but curve the corners of his lips. How did this kid end up so fair and clean? He looks just like a wealthy young master.

He sat up and quietly got out of bed.

Only after washing up and putting the water on to boil for noodles did he go back into the room to wake Shen Wu.

“Wuwu…”

When Shen Wu opened his eyes, he looked confused for a moment.

“What’s wrong?” His voice carried a husky sleepiness, which sounded inexplicably coquettish to Zhou Geng’s ears.

“Time to get up. I have to take you to the building materials company later, we can’t be late.”

“Oh, okay.”

Shen Wu sat up sluggishly and stretched his arms.

Zhou Geng saw that exposed sliver of a narrow waist and froze again for a second.

But he quickly recovered. “Get changed and wash up first. Is it okay if we have noodles for breakfast?”

“That’s fine.” Shen Wu actually quite liked eating noodles.

After Zhou Geng left the room, Shen Wu rummaged through his bag, found a random set of clothes, and put them on.

He had gotten back too late yesterday and was too lazy to unpack, so his clothes were still in the bag.

By the time Shen Wu finished washing up, Zhou Geng was just carrying a bowl of noodles out of the kitchen.

“Done washing up? Hurry and eat; we need to leave soon.”

He placed the bowl on the table and went back into the kitchen to grab his own bowl.

The noodles were topped with chopped green onions and a few baby bok choy leaves.

It wasn’t until Shen Wu picked up his chopsticks to mix the noodles that he realized there were two poached eggs hidden underneath.

His hand paused. Looking at the bowl of noodles, Shen Wu felt an inexplicable sense of home.

“Why aren’t you eating?” Zhou Geng walked out carrying his own bowl. “Taste it and see if the seasoning is right.”

“Oh, okay.” Shen Wu snapped back to reality, lowered his head, and began to eat.

It tasted even better than he imagined. The base seasoning included some fried cured meat, which made it incredibly fragrant.

“It’s delicious.”

Zhou Geng smiled, his voice carrying a hint of pampering. “Is it enough? If not, I can give you some of mine.”

“It’s enough, it’s enough.” With such a huge bowl, Shen Wu would have to try hard just to finish it.

After eating, Shen Wu proactively offered to wash the dishes.

Zhou Geng glanced at his hands. “You rest, I’ll do the washing.”

After saying that, he gathered the bowls and took them into the kitchen.

Shen Wu sat on the single sofa in the living room. His gaze fell on Zhou Geng’s back, and he couldn’t help but feel that this man was simply too good.

If he had known, back when he was writing the novel, he would have written him as a Long Aotian protagonist, giving him a massive commercial empire and a happy, harmonious marriage.

He wondered if he would be able to rewrite the plot when it was time for him to return.

“What are you thinking about?” Zhou Geng’s voice suddenly brought Shen Wu back to reality.

“Oh, nothing.”

Zhou Geng didn’t mind. He grabbed his bag from the room and looked at Shen Wu. “Let’s go.”

———

Although the complex Zhou Geng rented in was old, it wasn’t too far from the city center, making the commute quite convenient.

He led Shen Wu toward the bus stop, instructing him on how to remember the route along the way.

They would take the 131 bus from the complex, get off at Hongxing Road Station, and walk for about five minutes to reach the building materials company. It was more convenient than taking the subway.

If they took the subway, they would have to transfer, and the total travel time would be about the same anyway.

The two left the house around 7:40, and by the time they reached Hongxing Road Station, it was a few minutes past nine.

Although the appointment was for 9:30, it was better not to cut it too close.

After getting off the bus, Zhou Geng led Shen Wu toward the building materials company.

The streets in the old city district were twisting and turning. The sycamore trees along the road blocked most of the sunlight, casting mottled shadows onto the concrete pavement.

The building materials company was located on the third floor of an old office building. Pushing open the glass doors, the mingled scent of paint and wooden boards immediately hit them.

The young receptionist at the front desk glanced up at Shen Wu and Zhou Geng, and her eyes instantly lit up.

She asked very enthusiastically, “Excuse me, who are you looking for?”

Zhou Geng stepped forward and asked politely, “I have an appointment with Boss Wang.”

“Oh, you must be the new colleagues, right? The boss is in his office.” She pointed toward the office door.

The company wasn’t large, with only about a dozen employees. Usually, only five or six people stayed in the office, while the rest were out running sales.

Boss Wang had clearly informed the receptionist beforehand.

“Alright, thank you.”

The office door wasn’t closed. When Zhou Geng led Shen Wu over, Boss Wang was shouting loudly into his phone, “Drop the price on that batch of tiles by another five percent, or the deal is off!”

After hanging up, he glanced at the two of them, his gaze landing on Shen Wu. He stood up and smiled. “Come in and have a seat.”

Boss Wang was a slightly chubby middle-aged man.

Zhou Geng had a friend doing this line of work here and the income was decent, which was how he eventually managed to get Shen Wu the position.

He had spoken with Manager Wang beforehand, so they were already acquainted.

The two sat in the reception chairs.

Zhou Geng wore a perfectly measured smile on his face. “Boss Wang, this is my friend from back home, Shen Wu.”

Boss Wang sat opposite them, his eyes roaming over Shen Wu. After a moment, he smiled. “Looks good. The salary is what I discussed with you before: a base pay of 1,500 plus commission.”

He paused before continuing, “I’ll have Old Zhou take him out on sales for half a month. If a deal is closed, he’ll get a one percent commission. Once he can close deals independently, he’ll get three percent. And, of course, if he hits 100,000 in monthly sales, I’ll add another two percent.”

With that, he handed the pre-prepared contract to Shen Wu. “You can review the salary and contract yourself. If you think it works, sign it.”

Zhou Geng had already reviewed it previously. Although the company was small, his friend here could pull in 100,000 to 150,000 in sales per month. Including food and travel allowances and other miscellaneous benefits, in a good month, one could earn over 10,000. Even with fewer deals, earning four or five thousand was standard.

Most importantly, they didn’t require a specific educational background. Nowadays, slightly better jobs had strict degree requirements, and combined with Shen Wu’s lack of a strong network, this was already the best job he could find for him.

He looked at Shen Wu. “Take a look. If you think it’s fine, try it out here for now?”

“Alright.” Shen Wu still had to follow the plot.

After signing the contract, Boss Wang stood up with a smile, walked over to Shen Wu, and patted his shoulder. “Young man, work hard. You start tomorrow. If there’s anything you don’t understand, feel free to ask me.”

“Understood, Boss.” Shen Wu offered him a polite smile.

Boss Wang stared blankly for a second before quickly withdrawing his gaze.

Zhou Geng’s eyes fell on the spot where Shen Wu’s shoulder had been patted, his brow furrowing slightly.
