Chapter 117: Together, We Can Overcome All Difficulties
Chi Yuheng poured a glass of juice and pushed it toward Ye Ran. His hand paused at the words.
Ye Ran stared at that pause. His fingers took the cold glass, and after taking a sip of juice, he slowly said, “Let me say first that I am mentally stable and there’s nothing wrong with my brain. You don’t need to take me to the hospital.”
He kept his eyes lowered, but his peripheral vision didn’t miss Chi Yuheng’s expression.
The man was still as calm as usual, his deep eyes unreadable.
Ye Ran felt an inexplicable surge of disappointment, as if he’d been pricked by a needle. His voice lowered.
“Actually, it’s normal if you don’t believe me. After all, if anyone heard this, they’d either think I’m crazy or that I’ve read too many novels…”
Before he could finish, the man’s level voice suddenly rang out. “In this novel, did we exist?”
Ye Ran snapped his head up, crashing into Chi Yuheng’s serious eyes.
He couldn’t tell if it was curiosity or true belief, but he was willing to lay out all his secrets before him and answer them one by one.
“We existed. You, me, and everyone around us.”
“It’s just that in this novel, I was the villain.” His Adam’s apple rolled, his voice carrying an imperceptible bitterness. “I was once controlled by the plot to drug you. By the time I awakened, we had already slept together.”
Ye Ran’s voice grew smaller and smaller.
Even though he knew it wasn’t his intention and that he was being controlled by an invisible force before his awakening, the one who did those things was still his body. Thinking of this, his heart was full of guilt toward Chi Yuheng.
“And during that time when I went to find you for sleep for several days, I was also controlled by the plot. But really, it was just those few times. Afterward, I was completely myself.”
“I have absolute control over my own body. Every time we’ve done it since being together has been because I truly wanted to, with both my body and soul.”
Since he had reached this point, Ye Ran simply explained how he had fought against the plot back then.
Listening to his somewhat panicked explanation, Chi Yuheng’s heart felt like it was being squeezed tightly by a hand, an aching pain throbbing within.
He had been afraid to speak because no one would believe him, so he had chosen to bear it and face it alone, going against everything to change the plot.
He reached out, taking Ye Ran’s hand and gripping it tightly in his palm.
“Ye Ran, we are both living beings, not tools used to push a plot or to contrast with others.”
“We are flesh and blood. As long as we are together, we can overcome all difficulties.”
Ye Ran met Chi Yuheng’s gaze. Those eyes were as deep as the night, yet they were filled with a light warmer than starlight. They clearly reflected his own silhouette, without a trace of doubt, only complete certainty and cherishment.
His heart felt as if it had been lightly struck by something. The slight lingering unease completely vanished under this gaze.
Ye Ran tilted his head slightly, forcing back the mist in his eyes. “We definitely can.”
But with the questions in his heart still unresolved, Ye Ran asked directly, “In the original plot, I was the one who sowed discord between you and the Ye family. Now I know I didn’t, so why are you still targeting them?”
Chi Yuheng patted his head. “Don’t worry. My actions toward the Ye family have nothing to do with the plot. The Ye Group’s ambitions are not small. On the surface, they always appear friendly and want Chengyi’s cooperation to be their backing, but in reality, they’ve long wanted to bring the Chengyi Group into their territory.”
Ye Ran’s eyes widened slightly. “You’re saying the Ye family had already planned to target the Chi family and swallow the Chengyi Group?”
The glamorous Ye family actually hid so many calculations behind the scenes.
Chi Yuheng nodded. “Even the political marriage Ming Qingyan kept talking about was to use Qiao Yousheng. They wanted to marry her over here to briefly blind me while they took their chance to strike.”
Ye Ran gave a somewhat bitter smile. In the original plot, he had craved attention so much. In truth, whether it was him or Qiao Yousheng, even including Ye Tingyun and Ye Muqing, they were all just chess pieces for Ming Qingyan and Ye Hualin.
That couple truly had no hearts.
Chi Yuheng: “Ming Qingyan even went so far as to meticulously design a kidnapping for a piece of land. So, regardless of the reason, dealing with the Ye family was only a matter of time.”
Ye Ran’s fingertips curled. So, whether he had sown discord or not, Chi Yuheng would have done this.
In those seemingly “destined” endings, too many details had been changed, making him unable to tell whether it was the inertia of the plot or if they were truly creating a new future.
Ye Ran’s brain turned into a mess.
“What about Ye Tingyun and Ye Muqing? What are they doing now that the Ye family is bankrupt?” Ye Ran asked.
Chi Yuheng spoke calmly. “Ming Qingyan has been sent to the judiciary for the things she did. Ye Tingyun did try to save the Ye Group, but the building was already collapsing, and there was nothing he could do. He should have raised some funds from friends by now and is planning to take Ye Muqing with him to start anew.”
After hearing this, Ye Ran said, “So in this situation, it’s definitely not suitable for Qiao Yubai to stay there anymore. He doesn’t want to go back to that heartless Qiao family either, so he chose to work a part-time job outside.”
The corner of Chi Yuheng’s mouth curled into a slight arc. “That’s right.”
By this stage, the direction of things had completely broken away from the trajectory of the original plot.
Ye Ran breathed a complete sigh of relief. “This way, I should be able to not die.”
He spoke lightly, yet his words made the other man’s heart jump into his throat.
“What do you mean, die or not die?” Chi Yuheng looked at him with a furrowed brow.
Ye Ran looked at Chi Yuheng, his tense expression wishing he could forcibly take back the words he had just said.
“Don’t worry about me.” Ye Ran’s tone when he said this was like he was comforting or coaxing someone. “In the original plot, I died at the end. After being abandoned by the whole world and unloved by my parents, I committed suicide. Now that the plot has changed, I won’t die.”
By the time Ye Ran reached the end, Chi Yuheng’s expression became even more complex.
“Even if everyone in the world abandons you, I never will.”
“If such a day truly comes, it must be because I am no longer around.”
Chi Yuheng’s words were like a needle pricking Ye Ran’s heart. He felt as if he had been suddenly awakened by those words.
Would Chi Yuheng ever leave him forever?
…
Only Ye Ran went back to the old residence that morning.
Since handing over the reins, the Old Master had been exceptionally relaxed. After getting tired of traveling abroad a while ago, he had started playing with other things in the country, like motorcycles or racing cars.
However, given his age, his body didn’t allow it, so his passion for these things had transformed into watching various competitions.
When Ye Ran stepped into the old residence, the Old Master was focused on watching an F1 race.
When a race ended, perhaps because his favorite driver had won, the Old Master began to laugh while waving his cane in the air.
Ye Ran looked at the Old Master, then at the race on the television. “Grandpa, you like watching things this intense?”
Seeing how excited the Old Master was, if his physical condition allowed it, Ye Ran felt he would have gone up to perform a real-life version of Fast & Furious for him.
The Old Master called Ye Ran over to his side. “Xiao Ran, your Grandpa wanted to play when he was young but didn’t have time. Now that I’m old, I just like intense things.”
