Chapter 13: Just Sleeping
“Don’t worry!”
Looking at his face, flushed red with anger, how could Li Xuanyue not guess what was on his mind?
“It’s just sleeping. This princess won’t do anything to you.”
Although Li Xuanyue said this to reassure him, for some reason, Jun He felt a pang of humiliation. Of course, even if Li Xuanyue wanted to do something to him now, how could he possibly resist in his current physical state?
“Shijun Jun spent the night with her?”
Inside Langya Palace, when Shijun Lang heard this news from his confidant, his mind screamed, What the hell?
Among the five of them, Shijun Jun was the most aloof and arrogant. Whenever they had walked together before, he had always worn an indifferent expression, completely unconcerned with whatever they were talking about.
Who would have thought he would be the first to succumb to Princess Xuanyue’s tyranny? It seemed this Shijun Jun wasn’t any nobler than the rest of them. He was just like any ordinary person.
“Keep an eye on him!”
He wanted to see what kind of game this Shijun Jun was playing. They had all agreed to be on guard against Princess Xuanyue and not let her get close. But now, Shijun Jun had surrendered a step ahead of them. No matter how he thought about it, the situation left a bad taste in his mouth.
“Princess, it’s done.”
Inside Chaoren Palace, Ruyue, her expression alight with excitement, immediately reported the news she had gathered to Li Qinghe. “This morning, the maid who tidied the bed sent the cloth of consummation to Xihe Palace.”
“All we need to do now is wait and see.”
This Soul-Devouring Medicine was no ordinary drug. A person afflicted with it would transmit the poison to another through intercourse. Over time, the person they were intimate with would grow weak, eventually bleeding from all seven orifices and dying.
“Do you think my dear older sister will regret it when the poison takes effect and she learns the truth?” Li Qinghe murmured to her reflection in the mirror, a hint of anticipation in her eyes.
“The clan elders probably don’t know that my sister is unlikely to have children, do they?” Li Qinghe asked Ruyue suddenly, as if a thought had just struck her.
Ruyue quickly lowered her gaze. “Princess, is there anything you need this servant to do?”
Li Qinghe waved her hand dismissively.
“Mu Huang must be having a terrible headache dealing with the clan elders while trying to cover up the fact that my sister can’t have children.” Thinking about it brought a smug smile to Li Qinghe’s face. “Forget it. For the sake of sisterhood, this princess won’t be the one to rip away her last shred of dignity.”
“Go and fetch Physician Fang. Tell him this princess is feeling extremely unwell and that he must come at once.”
At that moment, Physician Fang, following Li Xuanyue’s instructions, was kneeling in Junhe Palace, not daring to even breathe loudly. He knew very well that not only was his own life in Li Xuanyue’s hands, but his entire family was also under the secret surveillance of her people. He didn’t dare to have a single disloyal thought.
“You’ve done well, Physician Fang.” Seeing him kneeling on the floor, too scared to even breathe, a look of approval flashed in Li Xuanyue’s eyes. “Although this matter has put you in a difficult position, it’s good that you understand when to turn back from the wrong path.”
“Rest assured, once this is over, this princess will send someone to secretly escort you out of the palace.”
“And… my family!” Physician Fang hadn’t forgotten why he was doing all this. If it weren’t for his eighty-year-old mother, wife, and child at home, why would he have taken such a huge risk to backstab the Second Princess? All he wanted now was a promise from the Eldest Princess that she would protect his family.
“This princess will naturally not blame them. After you’ve succeeded, I will send people to pick them up and reunite them with you.”
“Alright, since my dear younger sister has sent someone to the Imperial Hospital to hurry you along, you should get ready and go now.” To avoid any delays that might arouse suspicion, Li Xuanyue had Yinxin lead Physician Fang through a shortcut.
“Can Shijun Jun trust this princess now and take the antidote?”
From last night until now, he had been utterly exhausted by the torment of the Soul-Devouring Medicine, yet he still refused to take the antidote Li Xuanyue offered him. He was afraid she was plotting against him.
It wasn’t as if the other Shijun and Xiao Shi in the palace hadn’t fallen for Li Xuanyue’s tricks before. Although Jun He had only recently arrived in the Phoenix Clan, he had already experienced the same tactic on their wedding night in his past life. He didn’t believe for a second that Li Xuanyue could be so kind-hearted. Otherwise, why would they have been poisoned with the Ten Fragrances Soft Muscle Powder and tortured to death by her in their previous life?
“Why are you looking at this princess like that?”
The hatred in Jun He’s eyes was so clear it took Li Xuanyue by surprise. She had only met him a few times, and although they had stayed in the same palace last night, one had slept on the bed and the other on the side couch. They had kept to themselves. Why did he hate her so much?
Jun He averted his gaze. “If Your Highness has no other business, please leave.” He didn’t want to see her in Junhe Palace for another second.
Li Xuanyue raised an eyebrow.
“Fine!” Since he refused to take the antidote no matter what she said, she didn’t want to waste any more time arguing with him.
“As soon as you take this antidote, this princess will leave immediately.”
“However, if you refuse, then this princess will take up permanent residence in Junhe Palace.”
“You!”
Li Xuanyue’s words were like those of a rogue, and Jun He was choked with anger. Yet, there was nothing he could do. Helplessly, with a trembling hand, he took the black pill from her and swallowed it resentfully.
“Can Your Highness leave now?”
Seeing that he had taken the antidote, Li Xuanyue didn’t linger. “Then you should rest well. This princess has other matters to attend to.”
“Your Highness, what is this Princess Xuanyue up to?” First, she stayed the night in Junhe Palace, and then she summoned Physician Fang. Could it be that the princess had taken a liking to him?
Jun He’s oppressive gaze fell upon Chang Jian.
“Is this how you protected this prince last night?” Letting her enter his palace just like that? Letting her see him in such a disgraceful state? Anyone who didn’t know better would think the staff in a grand prince’s palace were mere decorations.
Chang Jian was speechless. The situation had been urgent, and he had been blocked at the door by Yinxin. What could he have done? He couldn’t have killed her and forced his way in, could he? She was the princess’s trusted aide. Killing her would be like cutting off the princess’s own arm. As a mere guard, how could he dare to challenge the princess? Did he have a death wish?
“Go outside and receive your punishment.”
Jun He didn’t want to look at Chang Jian for another moment. Seeing his spineless appearance, it was easy to guess what was going through his mind.
“Furthermore, from now on, no one is to enter Junhe Palace without this prince’s command.” Not even Princess Xuanyue. He didn’t care what she was planning or what she was trying to prove to him.
