Part 2
The legs of his suit trousers wrinkled as Eldest Brother Jian paced like an enraged lion. He sent a voice message: “Jian Huaiyi, you better explain yourself! What is going on between you and Liang Xun?!”
No response.
He tried calling.
“Jian Huaiyi, pick up the phone.”
Still no response.
Eldest Brother Jian was frantic, pacing back and forth. That familiar feeling of his precious little cabbage being snatched by some other family’s pig resurfaced. No, this was worse than a pig.
This was an ungrateful wolf.
“So this is you, Liang Xun. After the Jian family raised you, this is how you repay us.”
Eldest Brother Jian gritted his teeth. He always sided with his own family, right or wrong, and was fiercely protective to a fault—especially when it came to Liang Xun messing with his most precious second brother.
No, I have to do something.
With a few taps, Eldest Brother Jian transferred a portion of the allowance he had withheld from Jian Luojia last month into his account.
Ding-dong! One hundred thousand yuan has been deposited into your XX Pay account.
Jian Luojia was lying in his room contemplating the meaning of life. The moment he heard that heavenly sound, he shot up.
[Third Brother Jian: Big Bro! Bro! Brother! Why did you send me money?!]
[Eldest Brother Jian: What kind of question is that? Didn’t I hear that the limited-edition model airplane you wanted just went on sale?]
Jian Luojia was moved to tears. He never thought his perpetually busy big brother would remember something as trivial as his favorite model airplane’s release date.
He would never again say his brother played favorites.
[Third Brother Jian: Big Brother (wipes tears with back of hand), you’re the best to me (puppy nuzzles head)]
[Eldest Brother Jian: (pats head)]
[Eldest Brother Jian: Luojia, are you home? Can you do a favor for your big bro?]
[Third Brother Jian: Of course, Big Brother, just say the word! I’ll get it done!]
Eldest Brother Jian revealed his true intentions. [Go to your second brother’s villa and see what’s going on between him and Liang Xun, okay?]
Jian Luojia was confused, but a man who accepts a gift can’t refuse a request. He agreed immediately.
[Jian Luojia: You got it, Big Brother! Mission accepted!]
He bounced down the stairs, got in his car, and sped toward Jian Huaiyi’s villa.
If you were to rank all the happiest things in the world, sleeping in a second time would definitely make the list.
In the dimly lit bedroom, a small lump formed under the gray sheets. A single beam of sunlight streamed in, caressing the youth’s handsome face, from his curled eyelashes down to the full curve of his lips.
Jian Huaiyi opened his hazy eyes, his brain still booting up. He stared blankly at the ceiling for a few seconds.
“You’re awake?”
His brain switched on.
Hearing the voice, Jian Huaiyi looked toward Liang Xun, who was standing by the door. “You don’t have to go to the office today?” he asked, puzzled.
Liang Xun’s gaze lingered on Jian Huaiyi’s sleep-flushed cheeks. “I already went.”
Jian Huaiyi: ?
Liang Xun reminded him, “It’s noon now.”
Ah.
Jian Huaiyi pressed his temples. He knew he shouldn’t have started that mystery novel last night.
The more he read, the more awake he became. By the time he noticed the time, it was almost three in the morning, and Liang Xun next to him had long since fallen asleep.
Thank goodness he had already asked his brother for the day off this morning.
Liang Xun had lunch delivered directly to the house. By the time Jian Huaiyi finished washing up, it was ready on the table.
At the dining table, Jian Huaiyi suddenly asked Liang Xun, “Has your memory improved at all?”
“No,” Liang Xun replied.
“Is the medicine not working?” Jian Huaiyi frowned.
After all this time, there was still no improvement at all.
He was starting to have a bad feeling that this situation was getting out of hand. If things continued like this, what lay ahead for him and Liang Xun might be more than just the end of their friendship.
Jian Huaiyi was selfish. Even if they couldn’t go back to being brothers like before, he didn’t want to become enemies with Liang Xun.
“Let’s go to the hospital again this weekend,” Jian Huaiyi planned out loud. “If that doesn’t work, we’ll go abroad for treatment.”
He had the money, after all.
Jian Huaiyi swallowed the soup dumpling in his mouth. He remembered that his big brother had a doctor friend working overseas who was supposedly quite famous. He’d ask his brother to arrange for him to see Liang Xun.
At first, Liang Xun had no objections.
After a moment, he asked, “Do you… really want me to get my memory back?”
Jian Huaiyi took a sip of tea, his voice flat. “I don’t really want you to.”
I desperately want you to.
If he could, he would gladly spend ten million yuan for Liang Xun’s memory to return instantly.
Jian Huaiyi looked up and countered, “Don’t you want to remember our past, darling?” His voice was clear and smooth, with a coaxing undertone.
Liang Xun’s dark eyes flickered. The words on the tip of his tongue turned into a single syllable: “…I do.”
He often felt that Jian Huaiyi seemed to prefer the version of him from before the amnesia, but he couldn’t figure out why. Looking at Jian Huaiyi now, he suddenly felt that such a thought was childish.
It was all him.
No matter which version Jian Huaiyi liked, he was still liking him.
“Good boy,” Jian Huaiyi’s eyes curved into crescents. “See? It’s settled then.”
The doorbell rang.
Liang Xun immediately got up to answer it.
The door opened. “Freeze!” Jian Luojia whipped off his sunglasses. The first thing he saw was Liang Xun’s expressionless face. He quickly averted his gaze to scan the area behind him and, sure enough, spotted Jian Huaiyi. He yelled, “I knew it! You damn pretty boys are having an affair!”
Liang Xun frowned at the punk in front of him. Jian Luojia seized the opportunity, deftly slipping past him into the house. He stood in the middle of the living room with his hands on his hips, letting out a wicked cackle.
“I caught you, Jian Huaiyi.”
Jian Huaiyi shot him a cool glance, and Jian Luojia’s bravado instantly deflated by half.
“Jian Luojia, be quiet.”
Jian Luojia’s laughter died.
“What do you want?”
Jian Huaiyi didn’t move from his seat, merely lifting his eyelids to look at him.
Jian Luojia’s bravado completely vanished.
The sibling hierarchy was impossible to overcome.
He shamelessly sold out his big brother.
“It was… Big Brother. Big Brother asked me to come check on you.”
Big Brother?
Jian Huaiyi sensed something was wrong. His dusty-rose lips pressed together as he picked up his phone, opened WeChat, and clicked on his chat with Eldest Brother Jian.
More than a dozen unread messages.
He skimmed them quickly before scrolling to the very top, to the message he had sent.
[My clothes were stolen by Liang Xun. Can’t go in naked.]
His vision suddenly went dark.
Jian Huaiyi instinctively pressed and held the message, trying to recall it, but it had been sent hours ago. It was too late.
Liang Xun looked at him, his eyes asking a silent question. Jian Huaiyi didn’t dare to look back.
Forcing himself to remain calm, he turned his phone off and placed it face down on the table.
He said to Jian Luojia, “Alright, you’ve seen what you needed to see. You can go now.”
Jian Luojia: ?
His nose caught the aroma of food. He saw the table laden with dishes, one of which was his favorite pickled cabbage with glass noodles. His mouth began to water uncontrollably.
Grrrumble. His stomach started to thunder.
It was lunchtime.
A great man knows when to yield.
Jian Luojia cast a pitiful, longing look at Jian Huaiyi. “Bro…”
Jian Huaiyi: “…”
He had no time to worry about whether Jian Luojia was hungry or not.
Seeing that Jian Huaiyi was unmoved, Jian Luojia turned to the other side, looking pleadingly at Liang Xun. “Liang… Brother-in-law.”
Liang Xun’s thumb rubbed against his finger. He suddenly felt that Jian Luojia wasn’t so annoying after all. His well-defined hand brushed against his water glass.
Both of them now looked at Jian Huaiyi.
Jian Huaiyi: “…”
Thanks to his thick skin, Jian Luojia successfully managed to stay for a free meal. He sat between the two of them—his cool and elegant second brother on his left, and the emotionless Liang Xun on his right.
This is so good.
