Chapter 2: The Grave PART 1
The old woman was furious. Without a moment’s hesitation, she gave her own son a slap on the back of the head.
Slap!
Then, she followed up with a kick to his waist.
The man stumbled, wincing in pain, and spun aroundâbut there was no one there. Only the two paper effigies of a boy and girl on the grave, their bright red lips curled into a laugh, seemed to be mocking him.
“I was going to come find you guys anyway,” Luo Yan said with a sneer. She hadn’t even gone looking for trouble yet, but he was already here acting so self-righteous. “This is my family’s land. My grandma was buried here first. You have no right to be so high and mighty.”
The man pointed at the ground. “Does your family name say so? You say it’s yours, but I say it’s mine.”
“Youâ” Luo Yan was enraged by his audacity. She raised the shovel and took a step forward, only to be stopped by a hand on the wooden handle.
A fair, pale hand rested on the shovel’s handle. She looked up to see Jiang Si watching her with a weary expression, his eyelids drooping.
She froze as Jiang Si said softly, “Don’t get physical. There are more of them, and you can’t win.”
Luo Yan wanted to say, But I have you!
As if he could read her mind, Jiang Si said matter-of-factly, “I can’t win either.”
The man’s ears perked up. He heard Jiang Si’s words and became even more cocky, crossing his arms over his chest. “If you know what’s good for you, get out of here. What do you think this is, some place where you can just cause trouble?”
“Damn it!” Luo Yan was infuriated by his contemptuous gaze and was determined to teach him a lesson. She snapped at Jiang Si, “If you’re too scared, just stand on the side. Don’t get in my way.”
Jiang Si sighed. “Let’s talk this out calmly. We live in a society governed by law. Think of your family and friends. Don’t do anything rash.”
After advising Luo Yan, Jiang Si turned to the three arrogant men and said in a calm tone, “This land belongs to the woman behind me. If you don’t believe me, we can show you the proof. Besides, her grandmother was buried here first. What you’re doing is unethical.”
“I don’t care about your proof. If it doesn’t have your name on it, it’s fair game. Plus, my mother is already buried here. You want to try digging her up?”
The man showed no mercy. He’d seen the shovel in Luo Yan’s hand and, after guessing their purpose, felt even more confident, believing he was in the right. “If you dare to dig up a grave, I’ll call the police immediately. We’ll see who’s really guilty here.”
Jiang Si sighed. Arguing with unreasonable people was the hardest thing in the world. He took out his phone and started to dial a number. His voice was low, but everyone present could hear him clearly.
“Hello, officer? I’d like to report a crime. Someone is illegally occupying land. Yes, they brought a group of people and are threatening to beat us up if we don’t leave.”
After hanging up, Jiang Si looked at the man. “I’ve already called the police. You can explain it to them when they get here.”
He acted so fast that no one believed he had actually called. But Jiang Si’s serious expression made it seem like he wasn’t joking.
“What are you doing?” The man’s arrogance immediately deflated when he heard about the police call. His face still held a hint of intimidation, but anyone could see his bravado was a façade.
“There’s still a little time. Why don’t you have a nice chat with my client?” Jiang Si stepped aside, revealing Luo Yan.
“Hmph. I’ll give you one day to move the grave,” Luo Yan said, encouraged by Jiang Si’s look. She now felt more confident.
“She’s already buried! Where do you expect me to move her? Go ahead and call the police. I don’t believe they can force me to pull my mother out of her coffin.”
The man’s eyes darted around. He remembered what the geomancer had told him and his attitude hardened again. He would not give in.
“Youâ” Luo Yan’s face turned red with anger. Before she could utter a curse, Jiang Si cut her off.
“Are you sure you don’t want to move it? Even if your son falls ill and your family is torn apart, you still want to bury your mother here?”
The clear sky was filled with a soft breeze that rustled the wheat stalks, swirling around and making the leaves of the trees rustle.
“What are you talking about?” The man frowned, glaring at Jiang Si. “What does my mother have to do with my son? Who told you my son was sick?”
Luo Yan was also stunned, staring at Jiang Si. She didn’t even know whose grave this was, but somehow Jiang Si knew more than she did.
“Your son is just sick right now. If you keep delaying this, his life will be in danger,” Jiang Si said, unhurriedly. He squinted at the man, the light filtering through the dense green canopy creating a golden halo around his hair.
“You’re cursing my son, you son of a bâ” The man reached out to grab Jiang Si’s collar, but Jiang Si dodged him.
“Not only do I know that something bad is going to happen to your son, but I also know that you went against your mother’s wishes and buried her here on your own, all because the geomancer told you this spot has good feng shui and will bless your descendants. Isn’t that right?”
The man’s rage turned to shock. He froze, looking at the young man with a mix of suspicion and disbelief.
“Who are you? How do you know all this?”
A penniless worker who’s gone mad, Jiang Si thought to himself.
“Don’t worry about who I am. Just answer the question. Is it true?”
“So what if it is? I think you’re just a con artist,” the man said, scanning Jiang Si and Luo Yan. He gave a cold laugh. “Looks like you two came prepared.”
“That’s a load of crap! We don’t even know you. How could we have ‘looked into’ anything?” Luo Yan now fully trusted Jiang Si. She didn’t care how he knew the details; as long as he kept protecting her, she would stand by him.
“Was your mother around 1.5 meters tall? When she passed away, was she wearing a dark purple funeral robe with cloud patterns? And did you put a cream-colored woolen hat on her?”
The man, who had just relaxed, went rigid again. He looked at the young man in disbelief. The details of his mother’s burial were known only to him and his wife. And his wife wouldn’t talk about something like this for no reason.
How did this young man know?
Jiang Si’s lips curled up slightly. He had remained calm the entire time. Now, he looked like a great master.
“If you still care about your family, call your daughter, who’s away at school. She just got into a car accident and is in the hospital now.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, the man’s eyelids twitched. A chill went down his spine.
What if he was telling the truth?
“Don’t you dare say another word! Big brother, don’t listen to him. Yunyun will be fine.”
“Shut up.” The man snapped at his brother. He took out his phone and made a call.
A moment later, a sweet voice answered. “Hello, Dad? What’s up?”
The man sighed in relief. He glared at Jiang Si. If his daughter was fine, it meant this man was just spouting nonsense. He didn’t care if he had called the police; he would teach him a lesson.
Luo Yan looked at Jiang Si with worry, but Jiang Si remained calm, listening quietly to the father-daughter conversation.
“Yunyun, are you okay at school?”
“…Dad, how did you know?” Yunyun asked in surprise. “I didn’t tell Mom. Who told you something happened to me?”
The man’s heart sank. He quickly asked, “Did you get into a car accident? What happened? Tell me everything.”
“It’s nothing major. A car hit me right after I left school. I just got a few scrapes. My bones are fine, so don’t worry.”
“Alright, be careful and get some rest. Let me know if you need money. I’ll transfer some to you later.”
Hearing that his daughter was okay, the man felt a little relieved. He said a few more things and then hung up, looking at Jiang Si in a daze.
“How did you know?”
