Chapter 6
Bai He was awakened by people touching him. He opened his eyes, and a few people in white coats were standing around him. He guessed they were probably doctors.
He didn’t hear clearly what the doctors were saying, and he only regained consciousness for a moment before falling asleep again.
He had fallen from the second floor, the location being the main teaching building of the school. He passed by the balcony where safety railings were being repaired. He tried to stay far away because there were too many students leaving their classes, but he still got very close to the balcony. Just as he was about to leave this dangerous place, he saw two people in the distance.
It was Bai Lu, and a tall male student leaning on a crutch, who seemed to be an alpha. The two appeared to be arguing, but soon Bai Lu’s eyes reddened, and the alpha leaning on the crutch became flustered.
Seeing this, Bai He’s eyebrows involuntarily jumped twice, and a foreboding premonition crept up his numb brain. He subconsciously quickened his pace to leave, but the crowd suddenly surged, and he was unexpectedly pushed off the balcony.
Pain, dizziness, accompanied by screams from all directions, and then Bai Lu’s particularly heartbroken voice.
Bai He really wanted him to stop crying, but he was in too much pain to open his mouth. His body was in great pain, and his brain was throbbing unbearably. Amid the clamorous and ear-piercing noises around him, he finally couldn’t bear it and fainted.
When he woke up again, it was a dark night. Bai He lay on a hospital bed, the ward completely silent. He was the only one there.
He saw his left leg in a protective device, and his left and right arms wrapped in bandages. The second floor was not high, and there were shrubs trimmed down to just branches below. He had fallen right onto those sharp branches, cutting his body in several places.
Bai He moved his fingers and with great difficulty reached for the water glass on the bedside table. After much effort, he finally reached it, only to find it was empty, feeling extremely disappointed.
He disliked this feeling, this loneliness and desolation similar to withdrawal, which made his heart very uncomfortable. But he should not have had such emotions now; he should have been used to being alone.
Bai He quickly adjusted his state. He put the empty water glass back on the table and reached for the phone next to it. The phone had only about 10% battery left and was already showing red. He checked the time – it was 4 am. From the day he fell from the second floor until now, three days had passed.
Bai He felt uneasy. He couldn’t stop feeling distressed thinking about Ling Ling being alone at home for three days. He had just made up his mind to take responsibility for Ling Ling, but ended up leaving him alone at home for several days.
He didn’t know if the water and cat food he had left for Ling Ling were enough. Bai He pressed his lips tight, and his leg occasionally throbbed with pain. He couldn’t move much, and a fine sweat gradually appeared on his face. He didn’t fall asleep again until a nurse came to the ward in the morning.
“When can I be discharged?” Bai He asked the nurse, a female beta who was doing the checkup. Hearing his question, the nurse looked a bit helpless: “Your leg will have to stay in the hospital for at least a week.”
“That long?” Bai He’s disappointment was hard to conceal.
“Normally a fracture wouldn’t be a big deal,” the nurse placed her hands on her hips. “If you were an alpha, you might have been well in a day. But for an omega, it takes a long time to recover from a fracture.”
“I’m not an omega,” Bai He said. “Can I be discharged early?”
“You’re not an omega?” The nurse blinked, with a strange expression on her face. “That’s strange, your physique is so poor, I thought you were an omega. The hospital didn’t give you a gender check-up, did they?”
“The little omega who brought him in that day said he was a beta, so we didn’t do any check-up since we knew his gender,” a slightly older nurse who just came in said, taking the record book from the younger nurse and glancing down at Bai He. “You’d better not think about an early discharge, just focus on recovering. I’ve never seen a beta with such a poor physique.”
Bai He nodded dejectedly. The younger nurse went out and came back with breakfast for him.
“Thank you,” Bai He took the breakfast and had a sip of soybean milk, then looked up. “How much is this? I’ll transfer it to you.”
The young nurse was struggling to bite into the dry crullers, and quickly shook her head when Bai He said that. “No need, no need, this is included in your hospitalization fees. Your omega father said he has no time to take care of you, so I’ll be staying with you during this period. If I’m not here, just press the call button and I’ll come right away.”
Bai He frowned slightly, pausing for a moment before nodding in gratitude.
The young nurse went busy, and before leaving, she found a charger for Bai He. Bai He turned on his phone and found Xia Xiaomiao, hesitating for a while before sending him a message.
The other side almost immediately responded with a voice message.
Xia Xiaomiao: “What’s the matter?”
Bai He pondered for a moment and typed.
Death: [Xiaomiao, I want to ask you a favor, and I won’t let you do it for free.]
The other side was silent for a few seconds, then sent two more voice messages.
Xia Xiaomiao: “Little Bai He, why are you so polite to me all of a sudden?”
Xia Xiaomiao: “We’re already friends, right? Friends don’t need to be so careful with each other. Just tell me what’s wrong, I’m more than happy to help.”
Hearing Xia Xiaomiao’s voice messages, Bai He’s heart was warmed. He didn’t notice that a subtle touch of grievance had flashed across his face for just a moment.
He told Xia Xiaomiao that he was in the hospital, and that he had a Maine Coon cat at home with no one to take care of it. The only key was on him, so he wanted to ask Xia Xiaomiao to come to the hospital to get the key and go home to check on Ling Ling.
As soon as the message was sent, Xia Xiaomiao’s messages kept coming.
Xia Xiaomiao: “You’re in the hospital?!”
Xia Xiaomiao: “What happened to you? Are you alright?”
Xia Xiaomiao: “No problem, wait for me, I’ll be there right away.”
Xia Xiaomiao: “Oh, by the way, have you had breakfast? I’ll bring it over to you. Oh, send me the location, Xiaomiao is coming!”
Bai He replied to Xia Xiaomiao one by one, then sent the location to him, leaning back and staring blankly, not thinking of anything, just feeling the sense of being cared for, which seemed so unreal to him. He hadn’t felt this way for a long time, and his heart felt a little stuffy.
Xia Xiaomiao arrived at the hospital in less than half an hour, carrying a fruit basket, and the alpha behind him was carrying many get-well gifts.
“Your leg is in a protective device?! And there are bandages on your arms and body?!” Xia Xiaomiao stood at the door, eyes wide with surprise. He quickly walked to the bedside: “What happened, little Bai He?”
Bai He gave a bitter smile: “Fell from the second floor, but I’m fine now.”
“Fell from the second floor??” Xia Xiaomiao was shocked. “And you call this fine? Little Bai He, you have to be more careful with yourself!”
“I’m sorry…” Bai He apologized subconsciously.
Xia Xiaomiao was amused by his dejected expression. He pulled a chair and sat down in front of the bed. “What are you apologizing for? I’m not criticizing you. Your expression is just like some of my students who made mistakes.”
He then placed the fruit basket on the side, and the alpha behind him also put the get-well gifts there. Xia Xiaomiao introduced them to each other: “This is my boyfriend Jiang Rong. Jiang Ge, this is the Bai He I told you about, the one renting our house.”
Jiang Rong smiled and nodded, “Hello.”
“Hello,” Bai He responded with a nod.
After the greetings, Bai He told Xia Xiaomiao in detail about the trouble he wanted to ask him for, and then said, “Sorry, I didn’t ask if you and your boyfriend could keep a pet at home before. I just went ahead and raised a cat.”
“No problem, hehe, you know, I used to have a pet too, even a giant dog,” Xia Xiaomiao smiled sweetly, looking at Jiang Rong, and took the key Bai He handed him, getting up and gently patting Bai He’s head: “Okay, you just focus on recovering. The Maine Coon cat at home is in our hands now.”
“Thank you,” Bai He was truly grateful to them, and he thought he must treat them to a meal later.
After watching the two leave, the ward became quiet again, and the place seemed to have become empty and desolate. That slight withdrawal symptom surged up again and then dissipated. Bai He heard a familiar voice outside, and turned his head towards the slightly ajar door, catching a glimpse of the alpha leaning on a crutch.
Bai He’s heart sank.
He clearly knew that before his fall, he was still quite a distance from the balcony, but after encountering the protagonist attacker and the protagonist victim, the fall had occurred. He couldn’t be sure if there was anything in between, but he still suspected that this was the trigger that had supplemented the plot that was missing from the original owner’s home – the part where he didn’t fall from the second floor.
It seemed that the plot was forcibly making him carry out the original owner’s plot. If there was any triggering mechanism, it was probably by approaching the protagonist.
The person who just passed by was obviously the protagonist attacker, and Bai He’s heart sank. If Bai Lu was also around, something might happen to him again.
Bai He looked at his leg still in the protective device, frowning. He couldn’t get hurt again.
Absentmindedly, another figure flashed past the door, and Bai He’s eyelashes trembled, recalling something. Without going through his brain, he unconsciously called out.
“Qin Yao.”
His voice was not too loud, but it was clear and powerful, standing out distinctly in the empty ward. He waited quietly for a few seconds, only a moment, and a hand pushed open the half-closed door.
Qin Yao’s face, with a shallow smile, appeared in Bai He’s line of sight: “You called me?”
Bai He was dazed by Qin Yao’s smile, and after a moment of hesitation, he lowered his voice: “Can you… take me outside?”
Bai He didn’t know why he had called out to Qin Yao, nor did he know why he had asked him for help. After all, he and Qin Yao were not really friends, they had only met a few times.
“Put your hand on my shoulder,” Qin Yao went outside to find a wheelchair, and said to the dazed Bai He, “I’ll carry you to the wheelchair. I asked the doctor, and they said I can take you out.”
Bai He was stunned, raising his head and obediently placing his hand on Qin Yao’s shoulder.
Qin Yao smiled, bending down and easily lifting Bai He up, as he had expected, Bai He was very light, light enough for him to pick up with one hand.
Bai He sat in the wheelchair, slowly adjusting the position of his left leg, a fine sweat appearing on his face.
“Does it hurt?” Qin Yao squatted down to help him adjust his left leg. “Is this better?”
“Mm, much better.” Bai He thanked him, then thought for a moment. “Are you busy? Won’t I be bothering you?”
“Not busy, it’s fine, I’ll take you downstairs first.” Qin Yao thought: he actually came to the hospital just to see Bai He.
He had just gotten the accurate information about Bai He’s location in the hospital and rushed over. Coincidentally, he ran into the limping Guan Jiaye on the way. He originally wanted to go upstairs and mock Guan Jiaye a bit, but halfway there, he was called by Bai He.
He wasn’t sure why Bai He had called him, but maybe their few previous encounters had left Bai He with a somewhat good impression of him. The fact that Bai He had asked him for help in this situation might even mean that Bai He’s impression of him was not bad.
Pushing the wheelchair and walking outside, Qin Yao’s smile became even brighter, his mood excellent.
“How’s your leg?” Qin Yao asked Bai He.
“It’s fine now,” Bai He, facing the outdoor sunlight, had a faint warmth on his face, softening his pale expression.
Arriving at the back of the hospital, Qin Yao pushed Bai He around in the park, stopping under a tree. Dappled sunlight filtered through the leaves and fell on their faces. Bai He looked up at Qin Yao: “Thank you, you can just leave me here.”
Qin Yao raised his eyebrows: “How will you get back if I leave?”
Bai He fell silent, then slowly shook his head, and finally said, “I can find someone to help.”
“Like you called me just now?” Qin Yao bent down to look into Bai He’s eyes. “Since you know me, don’t call anyone else.”
Bai He was taken aback.
“I came to the hospital to find someone.” Qin Yao waved his phone. “Whenever you want to go back, just send me a message.”
Bai He lowered his gaze and opened his phone, finding a friend request that had been lingering there for a long time.
The request time…
Was the day of the transfer. Bai He understood, and accepted the friend request. The other side immediately sent a cat head emoticon.
Insomniac: [Hello.jpg]
Two seconds later.
Insomniac: [Wait for me.]
