Chapter 15
“I wasn’t causing trouble; he bumped into me…”
The girl, initially stubborn, transformed into a prickly hedgehog upon the suited man’s arrival, bristling with defiance.
“Let go!” The suited man ignored her, his frown deepening.
“No!”
“Tang Yue!”
“I said he bumped into me…”
“You’re an adult; why are you arguing with a child?” The man’s frown could kill a fly; his anger and impatience were palpable. “Are you trying to embarrass yourself further?!”
He reached for Tang Yue’s hand. The outcome was the same as the previous man; a slender hand stopped him.
“Sir, you’re an adult; you should be reasonable,” Luo Wenshu said calmly, her grip on his wrist surprisingly strong.
“And, you didn’t seem like this last night,” she added in a lower voice.
The surroundings were chaotic—gawking onlookers, children’s crying, passing cars, occasional honking. Yet, Tang Yuqi clearly heard her words. He momentarily hesitated, suppressing his annoyance, and looked at the woman.
Pale and slender, her features were soft, but her eyes were different—cold and distant, as if nothing could penetrate them. This made her entire demeanor shift.
It was her! The woman he’d seen last night with the Yu family! She’d stood silently beside Jin Youqian.
“You…” His expression turned complex.
The man watching his children saw this and started yelling, “Exactly! You’re an adult; why argue with our children?!”
Luo Wenshu glared at him, “Shut up.”
The man immediately cowered.
“Mom…” Luo Xingyu suddenly spoke, “They’re from our kindergarten.”
He pointed at the crying children. This was the perfect weapon to end the drama.
Luo Wenshu looked at the man, “You have two choices: apologize now, or I’ll post a video to the parents’ group, showing your children’s ‘friendly’ interaction.”
The man’s face twisted, then he approached his children, “Stop crying. Jiajia, let go. Xiaobao, apologize. No playing later, straight home.”
The children immediately stopped crying. Jiajia let go, and Xiaobao reluctantly apologized.
“What apology? Be specific!” the girl demanded.
The boy, reluctantly, said, “…Sorry, I accidentally bumped into you! Happy now?!”
The girl finally let go and thanked Luo Wenshu, then looked at Tang Yuqi, “See? I wasn’t causing trouble; he bumped into me!”
Tang Yuqi glanced at her, “Embarrassing.” Then he turned and left.
“You…!” The girl was furious; disappointment flashed in her eyes.
The onlookers dispersed.
“Thank you,” the girl, having composed herself, thanked Luo Wenshu. “I’m Tang Yue. What’s your name?”
“Luo Wenshu. This is my son, Luo Xingyu.”
“Thank you, little one. If you hadn’t recognized the kids, they would have cried much longer,” Tang Yue smiled at Luo Xingyu. “I’ll buy you ice cream, okay?”
Luo Xingyu replied, “They’re not from our kindergarten.”
Luo Wenshu and Tang Yue were surprised.
“I made it up,” Luo Xingyu explained.
“Wow!” Tang Yue gave him a thumbs-up, then looked at Luo Wenshu, “How do you raise such a smart child?!”
“What’s your name, little one?” Tang Yue asked.
“Luo Xingyu,” he replied.
“Can I call you Little Star?” she asked.
Luo Xingyu nodded.
“Little Star, besides ice cream, what else do you want to eat? There’s a playground; want to go? It’s my treat!”
“I didn’t like kids, but I’ve realized I only dislike ill-behaved ones!”
Tang Yue chatted with Luo Xingyu for a while, then remembered Luo Wenshu, wondering if she suspected her of kidnapping.
Luo Wenshu smiled and nodded. Tang Yue breathed a sigh of relief, “Luo… sis? Is that okay?”
“Let’s get something to drink?”
Luo Wenshu shook her head, “I’m having bad luck today. You might not get to drink anything if you’re with me.”
Tang Yue didn’t believe her and shared her own bad luck stories.
“Don’t worry, I’ve seen it all,” Tang Yue said confidently.
“Alright,” Luo Wenshu nodded, accepting her offer.
They went to the food court. Tang Yue quickly experienced truly bad luck—even the fish in the pet store splashed her with fish-stained water!
“…Luo sis, I apologize for my ignorance!” Tang Yue exclaimed, somewhat sympathetic, “Was it tough for you all these years?”
Luo Wenshu shook her head, “My luck isn’t always bad; it’s just sometimes.”
“That’s good!” Tang Yue said, then added, “I’ve been unlucky my whole life. I have to be careful. I wish my bad luck came in concentrated bursts. Once it’s over, I don’t have to worry.”
“Excuse me, check please!” The waitress came with the bill.
Tang Yue prepared to pay, but froze. Luo Wenshu said, “Xingyu, pay.”
“Okay,” Luo Xingyu paid.
Tang Yue sat there, embarrassed, “Sorry, I forgot my phone at home…”
She had realized this when she wanted to pay for milk tea. She called herself using a stranger’s phone; it was Tang Yuqi. She asked him to send the phone, but he didn’t mention it when he arrived, seemingly only there to scold her.
“I’m really sorry…” she lowered her eyes.
“It’s okay. You can treat us another time,” Luo Wenshu smiled. “By the way, you’re an art student, right? My son is also interested in art. Can you recommend some reliable art classes?”
“Mom…” Luo Xingyu looked at Luo Wenshu.
“I know,” Luo Wenshu touched her head. She knew about Luo Xingyu’s talent and her original desire to enroll him in classes, but their financial situation prevented it.
Tang Yue, without looking at them, said, “I’m self-taught, but I know some good art classes. I’ll give you a list…”
They sat down. Tang Yue confided, “Sometimes I wonder if I’m really their child. My brother dislikes me; my parents…”
Tang Yue came from a wealthy family. Logically, she shouldn’t have any worries, except perhaps too much money. But she’d been unhappy since she was young. Her parents were always busy; her brother preferred turtles to her. In kindergarten, the driver was considered her guardian. Once, Tang Yue had a conflict with other children. Her mother came, impeccably dressed, and asked how much money they wanted. After that, other children avoided her. Her mother told her not to cause trouble.
“…They never attended my parent-teacher meetings, even when I got top marks.”
But they never missed Tang Yuqi’s meetings. Later, Tang Yue hired someone to attend her meetings.
In high school and university, they gave her only money.
“I know this may sound whiny, but it’s tough…”
After her college entrance exams, her parents and brother suddenly changed their attitude, saying they didn’t want her to leave. Tang Yue believed them and changed her university choice. But they soon reverted to their old ways.
“I don’t understand why they treat me this way. If they dislike me so much, why did they have me?”
“Did I do something wrong?”
She had been a good student, excellent grades, no flaws, except for being a bit solitary.
“I wished I wasn’t their biological child. At least I’d know why they disliked me.”
Tang Yue wiped her eyes. “Sorry for venting.”
Luo Wenshu looked at her, “If you think so, why not find out?”
“…What?” Tang Yue didn’t understand.
“Do a DNA test; it might answer your questions,” Luo Wenshu said.
Tang Yue wanted to say she was just venting, but she couldn’t when she met Luo Wenshu’s gaze.
“Do one,” Luo Wenshu said. “What’s your phone number?”
Tang Yue gave her number.
“Xingyu, send her a text.”
“What should I send?”
“Anything. A number will do.”
Luo Xingyu sent “1”.
“Contact me when you have the results,” Luo Wenshu said. “I’m Luo Wenshu, a Xuan Shi (Taoist cultivator). If you don’t believe me, forget it.”
Then Luo Wenshu and Luo Xingyu left.
Tang Yuqi was on his way to the hospital when he felt a vibration. It was Tang Yue’s phone with a flashy case. A message from an unknown number: “1”.
He remembered the ringtone earlier at home; Tang Yue had left her phone. He’d hesitated to deliver it but then saw the commotion at the mall. He felt annoyed when he saw Luo Wenshu. He decided not to bother delivering the phone.
He arrived at the hospital and went to the VIP ward. Yu Zhen’s parents were there.
Yu Zhen’s mother greeted him, “Xiao Tang.”
Tang Yuqi politely asked about Yu Zhen. Yu Zhen’s mother was worried; she hadn’t woken up. Yu Zhen’s father said they wanted to transfer her to a regular ward. They couldn’t afford the VIP ward.
Tang Yuqi reassured them, saying it was arranged by a friend.
“I brought someone here; he’s an expert. Let him check on Yu Zhen,” Tang Yuqi said.
The Yu family noticed another man in the room. Tang Yuqi introduced him as Mr. Fu.
Mr. Fu was an elderly man in a black jacket, looking like a hermit. Yu Zhen’s father greeted him, but Mr. Fu didn’t respond. Tang Yuqi explained, “Mr. Fu doesn’t like interacting with people.”
Mr. Fu examined Yu Zhen, looking at her hands and eyes.
After a while, Mr. Fu came back to Tang Yuqi, “It’s complicated. I’ll explain later.”
The Yu family was surprised, but Tang Yuqi calmed them down, promising to call them if anything happened.
After Tang Yuqi left, Yu Zhen’s mother sighed, “I wonder how Yu Zhen knows this friend…”
Tang Yuqi returned home and brought Mr. Fu inside. He anxiously asked about Yu Zhen.
Mr. Fu said, “Not good. She has strong residual negative energy; she was possessed, for a long time. Luckily, she had a protective charm. If the possession had lasted longer, I couldn’t have saved her…”
Mr. Fu asked, “Did Tang Yue have any problems last night?”
Tang Yuqi shook his head, “I don’t know.”
Mr. Fu paused, “Take better care of her.”
Tang Yuqi shrugged it off, “She’s always lively; what’s to worry about?”
Mr. Fu changed the subject.
