Chapter 33: Why Don’t You Just Ride in the Sedan Chair?
The room had fallen quiet again. The barrier was gone, and all that remained on the table was a flattened, rabbit-shaped pancake.
Bai Xuzi’s eyes were vacant, and his hind legs twitched involuntarily.
It felt like he’d pulled a muscle.
“Are you rested?” Fan Yue asked, his gaze drifting down to him.
Bai Xuzi turned his rabbit head away, a little sulky. He wasn’t going to answer.
He’d clearly said he couldn’t take any more, but the man had insisted on continuing…
He wasn’t some kind of indestructible iron rabbit.
With a great effort, Bai Xuzi rolled onto his side, turning his head away from Fan Yue to face the empty part of the room.
He left Fan Yue with a view of the back of his rabbit head.
“…”
Bai Xuzi lifted his head just enough to tuck his two large ears underneath before letting his head fall back down with a sense of relief.
Ah, that was much better. No more pressure on his ears.
He was just so tired. What kind of pact had they even made?
He didn’t really understand it, so he stretched out a rabbit leg to get a better look.
The pattern on it had changed. It was much smaller now, and the glow had only lasted for a moment before fading completely.
Ugh, it didn’t look nearly as cool as before.
He sadly lowered his leg and went back to playing dead.
Fan Yue glanced at the two crossed rabbit legs, thought for a moment, and then reached out to pull them straight.
The rabbit pancake instantly teleported.
“Ah?” a small gasp escaped.
The next thing he knew, Bai Xuzi was “standing” up, his rabbit head caught in the other man’s hand.
They stared at each other.
“Not happy?” Fan Yue’s eyes were cool as he asked, a hint of confusion in his voice.
Bai Xuzi found this “standing” position awkward. He didn’t know where to put his paws.
After a moment’s hesitation, he rested them on the back of the other man’s hand.
Paws down.
Fan Yue glanced at the small gesture but said nothing, though the corner of his mouth twitched slightly.
By the time the rabbit looked up again, his expression was once again impassive.
“It’s not that,” Bai Xuzi mumbled, though he didn’t sound very convincing.
He was just so tired, so utterly drained, that a wave of exhaustion had washed over his entire being.
All he wanted to do was sleep.
But—
Just as he was wallowing in his misery, Bai Xuzi remembered something important.
“Hey, Your Majesty, how come I can’t hear your thoughts?” he asked, a note of suspicion in his voice.
He had suffered for this! He couldn’t be tricked!
He nudged his rabbit head forward, a look of accusation on his face.
Fan Yue replied, “I can’t hear yours either.”
His tone was nonchalant, as if it were no big deal.
Bai Xuzi’s fur instantly bristled. Then what was the point? If neither of them could hear the other, why go through that exhausting pact-making process?
He was so angry his ears started to flap.
“Then why did you—”
Not satisfied?
Bai Xuzi’s voice caught in his throat. He stared at the other man, completely baffled.
He could hear him…
But Fan Yue’s expression didn’t change. He simply explained, “We can speak directly through our thoughts, but we can’t unilaterally listen to each other’s thoughts unless given permission.”
“Fair enough?”
He gently prodded the rabbit’s mouth with his finger, waiting for a reaction.
Bai Xuzi mulled it over and realized that, yes, this was much fairer!
His ears shot straight up.
His red eyes looked over, a flicker of excitement in them.
“You really can’t hear me?” His paws were no longer resting so politely. He pressed them against the back of the hand, pushing with all his might.
It looked strangely like he was trying to pull a radish out of the ground.
Fan Yue glanced down at the little paws, then at the scratch marks on the back of his hand.
He had been so careful before.
He had a conscience, but not much of one.
“Mm,” Fan Yue said, his gaze returning to the little demon.
Bai Xuzi thought this was great fun. He started thinking all sorts of things in his head, occasionally glancing up at Fan Yue.
“…”
“Are you badmouthing me?”
Bai Xuzi froze, his rabbit head turning away, a guilty look on his face.
H-He was just testing it out!
But after his little experiment, Bai Xuzi suddenly found it strange. Was the other man really that considerate?
They could communicate through their thoughts, but couldn’t unilaterally listen in.
Emmm, it was a bit like a voice call.
You could only talk if the other person picked up.
Bai Xuzi searched his mind, trying to recall if any other pact had such a function.
But no matter how hard he searched, he couldn’t find anything like it.
The only thing that was even remotely similar was…
He quickly shook his head, dismissing the thought.
That was completely out of the question.
Fan Yue looked down at the little demon in his hand, his fingers stroking the base of its ear. The touch was warm.
And very smooth.
He wanted to stroke it all the way up.
“Your Majesty.” As he spoke, the ear in his hand flicked away.
Bai Xuzi sometimes felt his brain wasn’t working properly. Why was he trying to guess? He could just ask, couldn’t he?
“What kind of pact is this? It seems really useful.” He nudged his rabbit head forward again, a curious look on his face.
But beneath the curiosity, Bai Xuzi still had a tiny bit of worry.
There wouldn’t be any side effects, would there?
Fan Yue paused for a moment, nonchalantly retracting his empty fingers, and looked down at the little head in his hand.
“A Heart-Linking Pact,” he stated simply.
Bai Xuzi suddenly remembered. Oh, right, he’d forgotten.
The book did mention this pact.
But…
“Your Majesty, isn’t the Heart-Linking Pact one-way?” Bai Xuzi asked, propping his rabbit chin with his paw, a serious look on his face.
He had a vague memory of this because the protagonist seemed to have used this pact before.
Was it when he was fighting monsters in the dense forest?
He narrowed his rabbit eyes, deep in thought.
Hearing this, Fan Yue paused, a strange look in his eyes. How did he even know that?
He pursed his lips, a feeling of unease washing over him.
“I upgraded it,” he said, a hint of defensiveness in his voice.
Bai Xuzi didn’t find anything wrong with this explanation. In fact, he accepted it readily.
“Oh, I see!” he said, his tone relaxing. The fatigue hadn’t completely disappeared, and he rubbed his eyes with his paw.
He wanted to stretch.
His rabbit legs kicked back, slipping a little on the wooden table. Fortunately, Fan Yue lifted him up in time.
His front paws stretched out, his hind legs kicked back.
He formed a perfect arc.
“Awoo…” a yawn escaped.
Bai Xuzi looked at Fan Yue with his genetically red eyes, his paws resting casually on the back of the other man’s hand. They stared at each other for a moment.
Then he couldn’t hold it in any longer.
“Your Majesty, if you don’t put me down soon,” Bai Xuzi said, his voice thick with sleep. He was exhausted after all that.
“I’m going to fall asleep just like this…” His voice was low, and his rabbit eyes were already narrowing into slits.
Bai Xuzi had never overthought things. Even when he knew his thoughts could be heard, he hadn’t paid it much mind. After all, Fan Yue was the most powerful being in the entire book. It was perfectly normal for him to be able to hear the thoughts of a minor demon like himself.
Besides, the other man hadn’t reacted strangely, which meant the “auto-censor” program had kicked in.
He didn’t need to worry about it.
The current situation was basically like having a “Little Genius Phone Watch” installed.
It wasn’t a bother, and it was quite convenient.
With that thought, Bai Xuzi felt completely at ease.
So much so that he had already closed his rabbit eyes, completely relaxed.
Fan Yue: “…”
His rabbit head lolled to one side, his four legs completely limp, like overcooked noodles.
A complete mess.
Fan Yue frowned slightly, wanting to straighten the little demon out, but as soon as his hand reached out.
Slap.
He was slapped by a rabbit ear.
“…”
For a fleeting moment, he wanted to roll the little demon into a ball and throw him onto the bed.
But Fan Yue lifted his eyelids and took a look.
His little tongue was even sticking out a bit, and his ears automatically twitched.
Never mind.
He stood up and walked towards the bed.
Bai Xuzi slept very soundly this time, perhaps because he had used up all his spiritual energy.
He didn’t wake up at all.
The room was dim. Fan Yue stood by the bed, his expression not very pleasant.
How could he be so weak?
He raised his hand and sent some more spiritual energy. The rabbit lying on its back on the bed barely twitched a foot.
But there was still no sign of waking up.
Fan Yue withdrew his hand, his gaze shifting to the other’s front leg—where a pact glowed with a faint red light.
In the dim room, it was quite obvious.
Was it still too much for him to bear…
After a moment’s thought, he directly condensed a ball of light and infused it into the pact.
Soon, the red light disappeared, leaving only a fluffy rabbit leg.
And.
It showed signs of moving.
Bai Xuzi felt he had slept incredibly well. In his groggy state, he noticed the room was dim.
He stretched as usual.
His hind legs shot out straight, and his front legs stretched up with all their might. His entire rabbit head was straining.
Fan Yue watched the entire process.
“Awoo…” His rabbit mouth opened slightly, as if he were yawning.
Fan Yue’s gaze sharpened. He saw that fleeting little tongue again.
But it quickly retracted.
Bai Xuzi rolled over and groggily sat up on the bed.
He rubbed his face with his paw.
“Eh? Is it dark already?”
He had only slept for a little while, how could so much time have passed?
Fan Yue looked at the white furball on the bed and reminded him nonchalantly, “Wrong. This is the evening of the second day.”
“!!”
Bai Xuzi’s paw froze in mid-air. He tried to process the meaning of those words.
The second day, evening.
H-He had slept for a day and a half?!
Just as Bai Xuzi was doubting himself, the sound of gongs and drums came from the courtyard, accompanied by a few notes from a suona.
It startled him so much that he shivered, his ears flattening against his head.
“And, the three-day period is up. The wedding procession will be here soon.”
As soon as Fan Yue finished speaking, the noise outside grew louder. It seemed the earlier sounds were just a test.
Bai Xuzi was startled again. He scooted forward, getting closer to Fan Yue’s robes, and tugged at them with his paw.
He looked out the window and saw that there really were red lanterns.
At night, with the suona, it was inexplicably eerie.
Fan Yue looked down at the little demon huddled by his side, his expression unchanged, but a sudden sense of pleasure welled up inside him.
He casually reached out a finger and nudged the “ball of yarn” towards him a couple of times.
Bai Xuzi, having just woken up, was a bit weak in the legs. A single poke sent him sprawling.
He was completely baffled.
“Still not awake?” a slightly deep voice asked.
Bai Xuzi was about to look up when he felt a tap on his forehead, forcing him to tilt his head back.
He frantically tugged at the other’s robes again.
“A-Awake.”
After replying, Bai Xuzi craned his neck to look outside again, a nervous expression on his face.
“Your Majesty, are we going with them later?”
He still remembered their identity was something like guards…
Fan Yue looked down at the small furball, his finger scratching the rabbit’s chin, and then reminded him nonchalantly.
“Mm.”
The noise outside was deafening. Bai Xuzi was genuinely a little scared, remembering his experience of walking on the small path in Linshan late at night.
There were so many people this time, it should be better, right?
It should be.
Lost in thought, Bai Xuzi heard a helpless “tsk,” and then he realized…
He had already transformed.
“If I didn’t remind you, were you planning to go to the wedding in your original form?”
Although Bai Xuzi detected a hint of a lecture in his tone, he couldn’t help but imagine the scene.
A deserted mountain, a wedding sedan, and a rabbit trotting alongside.
“…”
That seemed even scarier.
Bai Xuzi had been clutching the other’s clothes with his rabbit paws. After suddenly transforming, he forgot to let go.
He just looked up and asked the question that was weighing on his mind:
“Your Majesty, are we walking next to the sedan chair? Will there be no one else around? It must be really cold on the mountain right now, right? What if there are rocks on the road?”
His tone was full of worry, his mind filled with images from horror movies set in deep, old forests. He had completely forgotten that he had lived in Linshan for three years.
The suona outside was still playing, mixed with the sound of maids’ footsteps and conversations.
There was only one candle in the room. A breeze blew in through the crack in the window, and the two originally separate shadows began to overlap.
“Bai Xuzi.” This was the first time Fan Yue had called the little demon by his name.
The sound of the drums just happened to ring out, momentarily drowning out his words.
Bai Xuzi tilted his head slightly, his brows furrowing. He hadn’t quite heard what was said.
But just then, the suona’s pitch lowered, as if it had passed its climax, and the room finally quieted down a bit.
And Bai Xuzi clearly heard the second half of the sentence:
“You’re so delicate, why don’t you just ride in the sedan chair?”
