Chapter 9: Severe Case of Straight Male Cancer
He recognized the voice: Wen Youlian, the second Miss Wen, his nominal ex-girlfriend…or rather, not even an ex-girlfriend, as they’d never formally broken up.
He then remembered that the person Wen Youlian called “brother” was Wen Shihe, the eldest son of the Wen family. Mu Jiashu had met him a few times but wasn’t familiar with him.
Wen Shihe’s impatient voice was mixed with a girl’s cries: “Do you think I want to hit her? She’s been clinging to me for two days, thinking she can act superior. Pretending! She even wants to go to school. What’s the point of a girl getting so much education? Isn’t she just going to serve a man anyway?”
Wen Youlian, initially unconcerned, had casually tried to stop him. Hearing this, she became unhappy: “Girls can’t go to school? You have straight male cancer!”
Wen Shihe sneered: “Humph, she can go to school if she wants; no one’s stopping her. The key is that she cheated me and dares to ask me for tuition. I can’t stand that.”
Wen Youlian said: “She was with you, and you can’t even spare her this much money? You’re so stingy.”
Wen Shihe rolled his eyes at his sister: “You know, I’m a man of principle. I never mess with other people’s girlfriends. She came on to me, saying she admired me. She seemed smart and well-behaved. I took her in, but she wasn’t a virgin, insulting me! I thought she was pretty, and since she liked me, it wouldn’t hurt to play around a bit. I was already being lenient. It turns out she was after the tuition! So I won’t let her have her way.”
Only then did Mu Jiashu hear the girl who had been crying speak: “Y-you’ve had so many women, w-why are you judging me…”
Wen Shihe hadn’t expected her to talk back and laughed angrily: “Men and women are not the same! I’ve heard of men playing around with women, but never women playing around with men. You compare yourself to me? Are you worthy?”
As he spoke, he kicked her, sending the girl tumbling down the stairs.
Mu Jiashu had been standing at the corner. Unexpectedly, Wen Shihe was so ruthless. He couldn’t react in time and ran up a few steps, catching the girl who was rolling down.
Wen Youlian was also startled and pulled Wen Shihe back: “What are you doing? Mom’s hospitalized here. If you cause a big scene, watch out for her!”
Mu Jiashu understood why the siblings were at the hospital—Wen Hui was sick.
He knew a bit about her.
Wen Shihe and Wen Youlian came from a single-parent family; their mother was Wen Hui. She outwardly ran a nightclub but seemed to be involved in other businesses. She had a following and considerable influence. Because she was beautiful, she had connections in both the legal and illegal worlds.
She had never married, raising her son and daughter alone with the air of a strong woman.
Mu Jiashu and Wen Youlian were middle school classmates; he had seen her a few times, but he only spoke to her after they got together.
Mu Jiashu remembered one day Wen Hui came to their house—ostensibly to attend a banquet.
It was Mu Haochang’s birthday, but Wen Hui was unusually attentive to Mu Jiashu, showering him with care. Her warmth stole the spotlight from the birthday boy.
Someone jokingly said it was like a mother-in-law looking at her future son-in-law and liking him more and more. Mu Jiashu didn’t take it seriously, merely smiling faintly. But he remembered his father was very angry—he rarely saw Mu Yanyue angry.
Mu Jiashu sensed Mu Yanyue disliked the Wens. After the banquet, Mu Yanyue specifically called him to his study: “Xiaoshu, is Wen Youlian your girlfriend?”
How should he answer? Mu Jiashu and Wen Youlian weren’t together because they liked each other. He didn’t think Wen Youlian had feelings for him either.
One was testing the waters, the other intentionally approaching, which brought them together. Their acting was so good that only they knew the truth.
Mu Jiashu remembered Wei Xun initially opposed his relationship with Wen Youlian, constantly nagging that they weren’t suitable. Knowing his good intentions, Mu Jiashu didn’t say anything, just smiled. Later, Wei Xun stopped mentioning it.
He thought and replied to Mu Yanyue, “Yes.”
Mu Yanyue frowned. For a moment, Mu Jiashu felt he was about to lose his temper. But Mu Yanyue quickly controlled himself; his voice was still gentle when he spoke again: “Son, the Wen girl isn’t suitable for you. Find someone else.”
Mu Jiashu agreed; Wen Youlian wasn’t his type. But their strained father-son relationship was long-standing. Mu Jiashu often opposed whatever Mu Yanyue supported, so he unhesitatingly refused, “I won’t.”
Mu Yanyue had a tea set in front of him. He had been separating the teacups when he spoke, and hearing Mu Jiashu’s refusal, he finally lost his temper. With a “ding,” he threw the tea tongs onto the porcelain plate: “What do you mean you won’t? Is it up to you? You know what kind of people the Wens are! Aren’t you afraid of family discord? If you like, there are unmarried girls all over Beijing. Why choose her?”
Mu Jiashu thought Mu Yanyue was unusually irritable but didn’t overthink it, simply replying calmly, “I’m not like you, falling for whoever I see, treating women like clothes to be changed.”
This touched upon their father-son conflict. Mu Yanyue was silent for a moment, suppressing his anger.
He always cherished his eldest son and hadn’t scolded him much because of Mu Jiashu’s poor health. He hesitated after a few words and sighed, “Suit yourself.”
So Mu Jiashu continued seeing Wen Youlian until his death…
Recalling these adolescent memories, Mu Jiashu helped the girl to the side, pretending to check her injuries, avoiding Wen Youlian’s gaze.
Wen Shihe realized the danger—the corridor was tall and steep, with discarded medical equipment at the bottom. If not for the person who had caught the girl, he would have been in serious trouble.
His sister pulled him back, irritated and annoyed. He said sullenly, “No fun.”
Wen Youlian said, “Alright!”
Wen Shihe went downstairs. Passing Mu Jiashu, he pushed his shoulder, “Move, get out of the way.”
Mu Jiashu lowered his head to let him pass. Wen Shihe suddenly sensed something wrong and turned back: “Wait, Shen Shu?”
Mu Jiashu also thought, “Wait,” unexpectedly, Wen Shihe knew the former Shen Shu. Fortunately, Wen Youlian didn’t seem interested in the name, replying to a text message.
Mu Jiashu hesitated, raised his head, and smiled at Wen Shihe: “Young Master Wen.”
Wen Shihe laughed, sounding surprised and disdainful: “Oh, I thought some hero was trying to be a good guy. It’s you.”
Hearing his hostile tone, Mu Jiashu decided to play dumb.
Unexpectedly, Wen Shihe grabbed his collar, pulling him closer: “It’s fine for others, but you dare oppose me?”
Wen Youlian casually looked up from her phone, seeing only her brother’s back blocking the other person. She didn’t pay attention, “Brother, hurry up.”
Wen Shihe ignored her. Mu Jiashu sensed danger in his brother’s emotion. He didn’t know the history between them and was on guard.
Mu Jiashu subtly shifted his foot, wedging it between two steps, preventing himself from being pushed down like the girl. He showed a harmless smile, “No, Young Master Wen, you misunderstood. I just happened to pass by and didn’t even see clearly.”
His innocent tone made Wen Shihe look at him suspiciously.
Mu Jiashu maintained his smile—sometimes, the most infectious expression was a smile. But to smile in any situation wasn’t easy.
He was already handsome and clean-looking; the smile made him even more charming and harmless.
Wen Shihe paused, releasing his grip, his tone still unfriendly, “I’m telling you, be careful next time.”
Mu Jiashu nodded sincerely, “Sorry, I will.”
Wen Shihe paused and inexplicably asked, “You don’t resent me?”
What did he mean?
Mu Jiashu didn’t understand but couldn’t hesitate and instinctively replied, “How could I? No.”
Wen Shihe stared at him and turned away.
