Chapter 7
It was a strangely wonderful feeling. Pan Ze couldn’t imagine how disgusted he would be if one of his underlings secretly collected his nameplate, yet when he found out Yan He had it, it was somehow… okay.
People really do need to experience more things, Pan Ze mused. Ever since a certain golden eagle big shot had ripped off his wig and humiliated him in front of the entire academy, he’d become much calmer about things like this.
Seeing Yan He’s suspicious gaze, Pan Ze’s ears turned an even deeper shade of red. He puffed out his chest and yelled, “I don’t know if you’re straight or not, but I sure as hell am.”
Yan He wanted to throw that line right back at him. As far as he knew, weren’t pretty much all the named characters in this academy gay?
Pan Ze jutted out his chin and explained, “The reason I’m letting you call me ‘Brother Pan’ or ‘Brother Ze’ is to warn you. Just because we’re both working for the F4 now, don’t try to get all buddy-buddy with me. At best, you’re only half a brother.”
That’s right, that’s what I meant!
He wanted to use the brotherly address as a constant reminder for Yan He not to get any ideas about him. All he wanted was to stick with the F4, work hard to pave the way for his future, and when he graduated and returned to the Pan family, he would finally be able to utter that classic line: “The three-year period is up! I’m here to take back what is mine!”
Pan Ze couldn’t care less about romance. He was just too eager to get ahead.
Yan He was a little surprised. Yesterday, Pan Ze had been bossing around all the specially-enrolled students, including him, but today he was willing to grudgingly admit he was “half a brother”?
“Oh, so that’s what you meant,” Yan He said tactfully. “I heard there are a lot of same-sex couples at Bestia Academy?”
Pan Ze casually placed the thermal container on the hood of his car and, hearing this, gave a strange smile. “Is it possible that a lot of them aren’t together because of love, but to satisfy the urge and desire to reproduce?”
Humans are different from beasts because they know how to restrain their desires and follow laws; beasts prefer to yield to their nature, and reproduction is their instinct. Of course, in this academy, besides relieving their carnal desires, there was also the reason of seeking protection.
Hearing this, a chill that was bone-deep crept over Yan He.
After a long moment, he let out a deep sigh. “No wonder ‘sex, gambling, and drugs’ are listed in that order.”
Still, Yan He truly couldn’t understand how a straight man could do that with another man just to satisfy his urges.
Incomprehensible, unfathomable, and utterly baffling!
Or perhaps it was just a bizarre setting created by a bizarre author.
But knowing that the majority of the students in the academy were still straight, Yan He felt a lot more at ease.
“Thanks for clearing that up, Brother Ze,” Yan He said.
The “Brother Ze” made the corners of Pan Ze’s lips curve up even more. His gaze shifted down to the plastic bag in Yan He’s hand. He could faintly see the light indentations of fingers on a steamed bun, as if that slender, exceptionally long hand had been gripping it through the plastic. “Let me try your breakfast,” Pan Ze blurted out.
He Shao had tried it, so he wanted to try it too. These were He Shao’s leftovers! As a spotted hyena, he loved eating what lions left behind. Hahaha, he was just following his post-transformation instincts.
A good lackey knows to follow in the F4’s footsteps!
Yan He clutched his remaining soup dumplings and steamed buns. What a joke. This breakfast cost sixty-eight yuan, and He Shao paid for his.
The more Yan He refused, the more interested Pan Ze became. This was probably the immense power of the F4 to set trends.
Pan Ze’s eyes gleamed as he stared at the breakfast in the plastic bag. He patted the thermal container beside him. “I won’t eat it for free. I’ll trade you mine. The truffle and abalone congee is 666 yuan a serving…”
“Deal,” Yan He said decisively.
They swapped breakfasts, each looking at the other’s “country bumpkin” expression, and both felt like they had gotten the better end of the deal.
After all that, Yan He was feeling hungry. The two of them ended up standing in front of the luxury car’s hood, right outside the F4’s common lounge, and started eating. The woods outside the lounge were shady, and a cool breeze rustled the green leaves, quietly masking the prying eyes from afar.
While eating his expensive breakfast, Yan He’s fingers were busy on his phone, accepting the one thousand yuan He Ting had just transferred to him on the Meng Shou app. He had sneered at the idea of being a young master’s dog before, but now he was studying it seriously.
His phone vibrated with a WeChat message. He and his new roommate, the protagonist shou, had exchanged contact information the night before.
[Bai Yuzhou]: Yan He, there’s a freshman orientation at ten.
The other end paused, then the “typing” indicator appeared again.
[Bai Yuzhou]: Do you need me to save you a seat?
[Yan He]: Thanks, I’m heading to the auditorium now.
Yan He wiped his mouth with a napkin. Pan Ze had just finished eating as well. He had a class at ten and was about to offer Yan He another ride when his phone rang shrilly.
Pan Ze glanced at the caller ID and immediately beamed. “A call from Yun Shao?!”
The brotherly camaraderie from moments ago vanished in an instant, replaced by Pan Ze the malicious competitor. He said smugly, “Yan He, aren’t you Yun Shao’s new lackey? How come Yun Shao isn’t calling you? He’s calling me, giving me a task.”
Only an idiot would enjoy being a workaholic. Slacking off brings joy.
Yan He was completely unaffected. “Well, I won’t disturb Brother Ze’s call with Yun Shao. I’ll just take the campus bus from up ahead.”
It was only an eight or nine-hundred-meter walk to the stop, about ten minutes. Not far at all.
Yan He turned and walked briskly away from the F4’s common lounge, gradually disappearing from Pan Ze’s sight.
Pan Ze quickly straightened his clothes and answered the phone, his voice dripping with the sycophantic tone of a proper lackey. “Good morning, Yun Shao.”
Yun Xiao’s furious voice came through the phone. “Good morning? What’s good about it? Pan Ze, you have some nerve, eating the breakfast my little brother bought for me.”
Pan Ze: “…”
Pan Ze would never dare to snatch the F4’s breakfast. He had eaten Yan He’s peace offering simply because he knew Yun Xiao always slept until noon and even skipped his morning classes.
Pan Ze scrambled into his car, desperately trying to salvage the situation. “I’m sorry, Yun Shao! How about I go to Cafeteria No. 1 right now and buy you some soup dumplings?”
A cold, piercing bird cry came from the other end. “Do I look like I need a basket of your damn soup dumplings?”
Then, Yun Xiao hung up with a slam.
Pan Ze was both panicked and confused. Had he somehow managed to offend Yun Shao for no reason?
What was the problem? Why were the soup dumplings he bought not as good as the ones Yan He bought? Weren’t they all the same damn pre-made stuff?
So the biggest winner this morning was Yan He? Not only did he get a subsidy, but he also managed to please He Shao. And he, Pan Ze, was the unluckiest one?
Smooth moves, Yan He!
Pan Ze gripped the steering wheel, still bewildered. “Wait, how did Yun Shao know I ate his soup dumplings?”
Only he and Yan He knew. And it’s poor form to rat someone out when you’ve benefited too. Yan He had gotten his black truffle and abalone congee in the trade; surely he wouldn’t go snitching to Yun Xiao, right? That would make him even more of a petty person than Pan Ze himself!
Inside the quiet lounge, He Ting was still sitting by the French window, slowly and methodically finishing the academy newspaper. A middle-aged man, a staff member He Ting had brought from his family’s estate, respectfully served him a cup of fragrant coffee. “Young Master, your coffee.”
He Ting lifted the cup and took a sip, listening to the faint sound of the wind rustling the fallen flowers outside the window. At the same time, his other hand casually tossed the newspaper onto a small, carved round table nearby. The paper landed on his phone, and the screen lit up, revealing the WeChat chat between him and Yun Xiao.

Yan He paid two yuan to take the campus bus to Bestia Academy’s Third Auditorium. When he entered, he found it was almost full, with only a few empty seats left.
There were five batches of specially-enrolled students this year, and they were the last. Besides the few specially-enrolled students in the audience, the majority were rich kids. Yan He could easily spot the specially-enrolled students by their nameplates. They were also very self-aware, having voluntarily given up the best seats in the center to the wealthy students and sitting on the sides instead. Some older students were also there to listen to the lecture.
Bai Yuzhou sent him the seat number, and Yan He went to find it.
Bestia Academy had a strict hierarchical order and was strange in many ways, but there was one thing Yan He had to praise. Both the academy administration and the students themselves treated animals very well. In his two days here, he hadn’t seen a single case of animal abuse. And at an important event like the freshman orientation, they even let pets take up seats.
Yan He spotted a fat orange cat sprawled out on a seat, completely lacking a kitten’s usual alertness. The rich kids nearby didn’t shoo it away.
Unable to resist, Yan He reached out and gave the lazy cat’s soft belly a good rub. He didn’t dare to touch the sugar gliders and marmots saving seats, but he was confident with cats and dogs.
The academy was very humane in this regard, though it was a bit unscientific not to have them neutered. And that bell was way too big.
The fat orange cat shot up like a carp, looking around in a daze. “?”
Who was that? Molesting me in broad daylight?!
The orange cat student stared at Yan He’s tall, departing figure, then touched his own belly with a paw and let out a series of soft meows.
Strangely… that felt kind of good.
The orange cat suddenly leaped from its seat and dashed towards the auditorium’s restroom. A moment later, a chubby male student took its place. Although he didn’t know how he had suddenly changed back into his human form, it was a good thing, hehe.
The sugar gliders and koalas that had been curled up on their seats a moment ago all sat up, staring intently at the fat orange cat boy.
No one wanted to expose their beast form in public, so how did he change back?!
Yan He found Bai Yuzhou and his group in a corner. They had saved him a seat in the middle. Yan He thanked them and sat down.
Bai Yuzhou’s nose twitched. He could smell Pan Ze’s hyena scent on Yan He, along with the scent of another powerful, unknown beast. A wave of irritation washed over him, though he wasn’t sure why.
The clock tower outside the auditorium chimed, signaling that it was ten o’clock. The freshman orientation officially began.
Freshman orientations were always boring. The professors on stage spoke passionately about the academy’s history, trying to pump up the new students. The students, however, were yawning. Some of the rich kids had even dozed off. The specially-enrolled students were much more attentive in comparison.
Yan He was starting to feel drowsy too. As he turned his head to stretch his neck, he saw a skinny boy leaning on the shoulder of a muscular, dark-skinned jock in front of him.
…More gays.
“Holy crap, a senior got a picture of He Ting, one of the F4, doing an experiment in the chemistry lab!” a low exclamation came from the group of rich kids in the center. They completely ignored the lecturing professors and started discussing excitedly on the forum.
[Didn’t He Shao get taken to the Discipline Room yesterday? He’s out already?]
[Getting out of the Discipline Room the same day is one thing, but the key point is that the picture shows He Shao in his human form!]
[As expected of the man I admire most. Going in and out of the Discipline Room is as easy as breathing for him.]
[No wonder Pan Shao is still shamelessly following the F4 after being so humiliated. With He Shao’s recovery ability, having the F4’s protection means you can walk sideways in this academy and bite whoever you want.]
…
The specially-enrolled students, on the other hand, scrolled through the hot posts with increasingly grim expressions.
At Bestia Academy, the F4 were the trendsetters for the rich kids. They were like a colossal mountain looming over the specially-enrolled students. They were as weak as ants; how could they possibly shake a mountain? It seemed people like them could only ever look up at these celestial beings. They could either submit at their feet or wag their tails and beg for their protection.
“Next, let’s welcome the president of the Specially-Enrolled Student Association, Wu Saiqi, to the stage.”
As the host’s voice faded, a tall, sturdy figure emerged from backstage. He was a handsome senior, his custom-made academy uniform unable to fully contain his bulging muscles. The third button of his white shirt looked like it was about to burst. He exuded an aesthetic of pure power, making it hard to believe that such a formidable person was just a specially-enrolled student.
Wu Saiqi walked to the center of the stage with a microphone. He didn’t need to say a word. The demoralized specially-enrolled students were instantly re-energized, their eyes shining brightly, their applause like thunder.
Wu Saiqi stood there, and pinned to his left chest was a pale gold nameplate!
A single nameplate, as if it had transcended class.
Fewer than ten people in the entire academy had a black and gold nameplate; they were all the children of the empire’s wealthiest and most powerful families. To have a pale gold nameplate was the pinnacle of what a specially-enrolled student could achieve at the academy.
Yan He glanced at Bai Yuzhou beside him. He was staring intently at the association president on stage, as if he had just seen his future goal.
Yan He vaguely remembered his female colleagues saying that the protagonist shou would join the Specially-Enrolled Student Association in the future. So the idea had already taken root during the orientation.
The place where the dream begins!
His phone vibrated in his pocket. He took it out and saw it was a WeChat message from Yun Xiao.
[Yun Xiao]: You’re at the freshman orientation in the Third Auditorium?
Yan He replied with a “yes” sticker, and Yun Xiao didn’t reply again.
After a long silence, Yan He put his phone away. On stage, Wu Saiqi had already begun his speech.
“Hmph, so what if he’s the president with a pale gold nameplate? As if we don’t have them.”
“There are plenty of heroes in the world. Once you have a pale gold nameplate, you’ll find that at most, it just keeps you from being bullied.”
“A lowly specially-enrolled student’s fate is to wear a pale gold nameplate at best. They’ll never touch a black and gold one in their lifetime.”
“These new specially-enrolled students are hilarious. They’re all so pumped up. Do they really think everyone can be Wu Saiqi?”
“…”
The rich kids in the audience were full of disdain. Some crossed their arms, others looked on mockingly. The specially-enrolled students, feeling like they had found their leader, were all holding back their anger at seeing their president being looked down upon, their fists clenched tightly.
Yan He took in everyone’s expressions, even the animals still sitting in their seats, their faces full of disdain and mockery.
Yan He: ?
Using pets to save seats, and the owners still haven’t shown up halfway through the orientation?
Yan He stared at the disturbingly human-like expressions on the animals’ faces, and a completely absurd thought suddenly popped into his head—
These animals… they couldn’t be people, could they?
