Chapter 28: The Succubus Ashby part 1
Misa couldn’t contain his furious mood. He dragged Arlo into the room and angrily recounted everything that had happened the previous night.
Misa felt that the damned Hero had absolutely done it on purpose.
He whipped his tail in anger and even slammed his hand on the table, shouting, “He dodged the whole time and didn’t even fight back! He just wanted to pull my tail!”
Arlo: “…”
“Is there something wrong with him?!” Misa seethed, flicking his tail back and forth anxiously. “The Demon King is right in front of him, ready to kill him, and all he can think about is pulling the Demon King’s tail?!”
Arlo: “…”
To be honest, Arlo also found it hard to look away from Misa’s tail.
He felt that Misa’s tail was a bit too active. It seemed to sway every time Misa spoke. When such a constantly moving object was in one’s line of sight, it was genuinely hard for a normal person not to be drawn to it.
Besides, wasn’t there something going on between the Hero and the Demon King? What was this little lovers’ quarrel about now?
Arlo frowned, suddenly feeling that something… wasn’t quite right.
The fact that Misa would use his Demon King identity to launch a night raid on the Hero meant the Hero didn’t know Misa was the Demon King.
And the fact that Misa would fly into such a rage over something like having his tail pulled… did that mean…
His previous assumptions were all wrong.
There was nothing between Misa and the Hero. They were completely innocent.
Everything had just been his overactive imagination.
Arlo actually felt a little disappointed.
But even if there was nothing between them, Lance’s constant focus on pulling the Demon King’s tail when he appeared was still very strange.
This was definitely not something a normal Hero would do.
Even for a strange Hero like Lance, this was out of line.
Misa was still seething, venting his anger.
“I should have used my full power,” Misa slammed the table again. “And just strangled this Hero!”
Arlo: “…”
Arlo cleared his throat heavily.
“It’s just… well… is there a possibility,” Arlo said awkwardly, “that he was… flirting with you?”
Misa: “…”
Misa: “Huh?”
He had never considered things from that angle. Or rather, he would never think about things in that way.
The Hero… flirting with the Demon King?
Why… why would he flirt with the Demon King?
Misa’s mind went blank. He just stared at Arlo, wondering if he had misheard due to his anger. Seeing Misa’s utterly confused expression, Arlo fell silent for a moment before awkwardly looking away.
Damn it, is my mind just too dirty?
Am I the only one who would think of it that way?
Misa repeated, confused, “Flirting…?”
Arlo coughed and quickly corrected himself, “Provoking. It was a provocation.”
Misa: “But you just said…”
Arlo: “You heard wrong.”
Misa: “…”
“He was just provoking you,” Arlo started to spin a tale. “Even for a Demon King, the tail is a very vulnerable spot, right?”
Misa nodded solemnly.
“See, you couldn’t hit him, but he could grab your tail,” Arlo spouted nonsense. “That’s a provocation!”
Misa: “…”
Misa, whose mind was already clouded by anger, clenched his fists tightly.
“A provocation,” he repeated venomously, in a tone that suggested he wanted to strangle the Hero. “I’ll give him a provocation.”
Arlo: “…”
Arlo had a bad feeling.
He was, after all, the Hero chosen by the gods. As a God’s Envoy and a Demon King, they had no right to kill him. Arlo was worried Misa would do something foolish. He grew nervous and could only try to persuade him gently, “Misa, calm down. Don’t do anything rash in the heat of the moment.”
But in his extreme anger, Misa couldn’t hear a word Arlo was saying.
“Hmph, human Hero,” Misa cracked his knuckles. “Just you wait.”
Arlo: “…”
Misa whipped his tail angrily. “I’m going to beat him to a pulp!”
Arlo: “…”
Arlo let out a sigh of relief.
Good, it seemed he had been overthinking things.
Such a pure and innocent Demon King would surely never do anything truly bad.
More than the strange tail-pulling incident, Arlo was curious about the Hero’s ridiculously high power level.
A max-level Demon King sneaks into his room, chases him around trying to beat him up, but fails to injure this Hero who just left the novice village, and instead gets his tail pulled and teased all night? Was that… even possible?
Even if Misa hadn’t used his full power, the fact that the Hero didn’t retaliate and only pulled the Demon King’s tail a few times meant the Hero was also holding back with ease. He definitely hadn’t used his full strength either.
So, just how strong was this Hero?
Arlo could hardly imagine.
From the very beginning, Arlo had felt something was strange.
A Hero who had just left the novice village, no matter how talented, could never be this ridiculously powerful.
He was naturally curious about what the Hero had been doing for the three years he hadn’t gone to the God’s Tower.
And Misa had asked Lance about it before.
He had been curious about what Lance had been doing for those three years, and Lance had told him that all he did was fish, farm, hunt, and help improve the economy of the Land of Blessings.
But that just made Arlo even more suspicious.
“Do you think, with Lance’s personality,” Arlo frowned, “he could really stay in that rundown village and obediently farm for three years?”
Misa: “…”
A realization dawned on Misa.
He had thought the Hero’s words were strange back then, and now he finally understood where that odd feeling came from.
Given Lance’s strange personality and his methods, if he really wanted to help the Land of Blessings, he would absolutely not rely on methods like farming and fishing, which had extremely low returns and were slow.
Besides, the road to Skylight City was indeed blocked by a giant boulder, but Misa felt that if it were Lance, he would have a hundred strange ways to clear that road. He would never have obediently dug for three years.
Misa then remembered what the village chief had said to Lance when they were leaving the Land of Blessings.
The chief had said, “Although we haven’t known each other for long—” At the time, Misa thought it was just because the chief was old, so three years didn’t seem long to him. But now, it seemed the Hero might not have actually stayed in the Land of Blessings for the full three years.
The God Realm’s system only recorded entry and exit logs for the cities of various races and monster encampments. So, in the records, the Hero’s past three years looked completely normal. But what if… the Hero simply hadn’t gone to any of those places?
The more Misa thought about it, the more terrifying it seemed.
If their guess was correct, and the Hero had only avoided the cities of the various races and monster encampments, then his actions were far too deliberate.
Could it be that the Hero… knew about the existence of the God Realm’s Hero system?
“No, he’s too strange,” Arlo interrupted Misa’s thoughts. “It’s best to report this to Genesse and have the God Realm investigate properly.”
But Misa hesitated and shook his head.
“A-an unqualified Hero,” he asked hesitantly in a small voice, “what kind of punishment would he receive?”
Arlo: “…”
If judged by the God Realm’s standards, a Hero like Lance was more than just unqualified.
He was almost completely out of control. He had virtually no faith in the gods, treating them merely as excellent tools to be used. He was unlike any Hero they had ever encountered.
Although humans called Genesse the Goddess of Light, she didn’t have decision-making power. If Arlo requested an investigation from the God Realm, she would have to submit the matter to the Upper God Realm. Once those higher gods found out… Arlo felt the Hero might be in danger.
The higher gods possessed irresistible divine power. No matter how strong Lance was, he could never defeat them…
He might die.
Misa immediately rejected Arlo’s suggestion.
There were many ways to investigate the Hero’s whereabouts. As the Demon King, he could do it himself. It was better not to let this matter reach the God Realm.
The Hero’s appearance was quite striking, and his actions were very strange. If one were to investigate carefully, it would be difficult for such a person to hide his tracks.
His wings had almost recovered. He could go find one of his archdemons and have them investigate the Hero’s whereabouts over the past three years.
Although he hated that the Hero had pulled his tail, he didn’t actually want the Hero to die.
He didn’t understand Lance’s way of handling things, nor his way of thinking, but he felt that what Lance did was, indeed, all for the good.
…At least, personally, he didn’t want anything to happen to the Hero.
